A must read for teens, adults and parents!
Dr. Grandin has taken her knowledge, expertise and sensitivity one step further in Developing Talents: Careers for Individuals with Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism. She offers many ideas for those affected by or those working with these individuals. This area is filled with people of talent who are underemployed. An example of one of the suggestions offered - an individual who is interested in cartoons and spends their days drawing - all day - being encouraged to go to a museum of cartooning, learning about different kinds of cartoons, the history of cartoons which expands their interest - meeting others with the same interest. It is not enough to have a talent or the intellectual ability to understand complex things. Without work, Dr. Grandin explains, her life would not have had order, content or meaning. She covers many different kinds of jobs that people on the autism spectrum can accommodate to and ones that would be more difficult for them. The book is well thought out and because Dr. Grandin is herself on the spectrum and spends so much of her time speaking to others at her many presentations she has analyzed a great deal of what works and what does not. This book is an absolute must read! I run a large group for parents, professionals and individuals and it is one of my first recommendations. This book gives concrete suggestions and hope.

As a parent of an Asperger teen, this book was confirming and enlightening
As a parent of a teenager with Aspergers, alot of Ms. Gradin's recommendations confirmed what I already thought: sell the skills not the personality, go into areas where your interests/fixations lie and consider working as a consultant in your area of expertise.Finding recommendations I already thought of didn't make me feel like those parts of the book were a waste.On the contrary, it is nice to have affirmation from an outside source, particularly one intimately knowledgable of autism.
Ways to use special interests for people with ASD/AS!
I have read all three of Temple Grandin's books. Each offers a different look at what it is like to experience Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Truthfully, just another set of excuses for poor instructional techniques!
Using MRI and neuroscience to try to answer questions about dyslexia as Sally Md Shaywitz has tried to do is dangerously short sighted and terribly misguided.Especially when you consider that her conclusions about remediation reflect what is so deeply wrong with education today.Trying to cram human brain function and the human spirit into the confines of modern educationis akin to stuffing an elephant into a thimble. Imagine if one were so dimwitted as to blame the elephant for the obvious lack of success.This is precisely what is happening today in public education.If one were able to step back from the tree and catch a glimpse of the forest, one might see that ego drives professionals to draw conclusions about student performance that reflect the stupidity of arrogance.More and more students are being labeled learning disabled and dyslexic, more medication is being doled out and more and more remediations are being invented to control and force students into a useless development that does much more to impede brain function than to enhance it.In fact, students are being driven into intellectual comas and instead of rethinking methods and curriculum, teachers blame students and their families for their own professional shortcomings. Uniforms, drill and kill, direct instruction amongst other inhumane and unintelligent strategies are exactly what has gotten us to this desperate point.In one more generation, Sally Md Shaywitz will be able to prove that 2 in 5 students have dyslexia and her confidence in modern science will soar to new heights.Teachers everywhere will be able to rejoice that their own drastic failings are not their fault at all, but that of the flawed human condition.
Well meaning, but flawed and scary presentation of dyslexia
Some of the book was very interesting, especially the chapter on the functional MRI findings.I appreciate her writing the book to share her experiences, and think she truly wants to help. However, I admit I have grave doubts about her premise, because it is inherently contradictory.She repeats throughout the book that anyone who is dyslexic will always remain so, and yet is simultaneously convinced that the kind of intervention she recommends is uniformly effective. In addition, the graph on which she bases her claim about the absolute persistence of dyslexia does not justify her conclusions. The book names various intervention programs, but doesn't compare and contrast them. It is hard to tease out specific recommendations about what to do.She mentions that people vary in their reading stumbling blocks, but prescribes the same programs for all.She states that anyone using programs like Open Court should succeed, but thousands of California children still have trouble reading.Though she means the book to be empowering, I think it scares parents instead.

From a parent!
This book is what I've been looking for: a book that teaches you HOW to teach social skills and organization skills for kids that just don't pick it up from interactions in everyday life. It's made a big difference in our everyday family and school life for my 2 ADHD/LD kids. My thanks to Rick Lavoie!

Read this book!
Writing as someone who has lived with learning disabilities for nearly 50 years now, I cannot say strongly enough that I sincerely wish all of my teachers and parents had read this book.I will go a little further than that---I wish the pastoral counselor, psychologist, and psychiatrists that I have dealt with as an adult would read this book.
Good as far as it goes
This book provides what sound like good tips for helping a child struggling with social skills.Whether they work, I really can't say, as applying everything here would be the work of a lifetime.

Disappointing
I have a 19 year old son that has been on stimulants since age 5.The stimulants work but we're always searching for a better, easier and cheaper solution.We've tried all types of naturals treatments and biofeedback but they did not work.I was hoping that Lawlis' book offered some new insights into ADD and it's causes and treatment.However, I was disappointed to read the same old suggestions about nutrition, diet, biofeedback, etc.I don't disagree that some people benefit from these treatments but Dr. Lawlis didn't present any new ideas.

From a Parent's Perspective
I have a 14 yo son with ADHD and I've read too many books on the subject. I took my son off all meds a year ago because the cure was becoming worse than the diagnosis and realized that the meds were masking his emotional problems even though he went to Psychciatrists and Psycologists, Pediatric Neurological Behavioralists-the list seemed eternal.
Worthless Drivel !!!
I have been in practice for over 25 years, treating adults and children alike, I have read many books on the subject of ADD and ADHD and frankly I found this book to be full of the same old sham treatments that don't work any better than snake oil.

Book of hope
This book gives lots of case stories of adults with ADD.The book is long, but easy to read.There is lots of information about ADD, its diagnosis, and the newest treatments for it.But most of all, this book offers lots of hope for adults with ADD, that they can have happy and full, productive lives.

Finally, Somebody knows what they're talking about
As an adult with ADHD, I really appreciated this book's frank approach to all the sides of having ADHD. The authors have it too, which helps, because they are successful professionals. I am a professional who plans to be more successful once my doctor and I get my medication right. I have read it twice now and will continue to use the book as an invaluable resource.

Start Here
This is the first book I read on Asperger's, and I am glad that it was.Tony Attwood is one of the leading experts on Asperger's.He really gets it and doesn't try to fit an Asperger child into a nt understanding of the world, but goes to the Asperger world.It has really helped me understand myself and my children better.Well done!I can't wait to see more from him.

At the very top of my list
My son was found with some type of High Functioning Autism about two months ago. I'm a physician and behavioral researcher, though not in the area of autism or anything related to children or developmental disorders. I've read many books, scientific texts, online publications... you name it, in the past weeks. I've obtained very valuable information from all of them. This book does not go into the details of genetics or the neurological issues around Autism, in which I'm deeply interested, but I got that from other sources. However, it was from this book that I could draw a clear plan of action for my son and my family. Mr. Atwood must be a very smart and practical person. So far, of all that I've read, I'd put this book at the top, with the much more academic though less practical textbook on AS by Klin, Volkmar and Sparrow.

Psychologist highly recommends
I highly recommend this comprehensive and detailed guide to helping children with sensory issues.With authorship shared by an occupational therapist and the mother of son with sensory issues, it is chock full of helpful insights and tips from both a therapeutic and a parental perspective.
Wonderful Help for working with my SID Child!

Effective diagnosis and treatment of attention deficit disorders, based on data, not dogma
Healing ADD is a very readable presentation of the scientific evidence for Attention Deficit Disorders.It contains effective treatment recommendations, based on real world clinical experience. Insightful case histories accompany SPECT brain scans of actual patients, illuminating the physical reality of the disorders and the impact of various pharmaceutical, nutritional, psychotherapy and herbal treatments.
Safe, is it really?
In page xvii of the introduction, Dr. Amen writes "Stimulant medications such as Adderall, Ritalin, or Dexedrine are among the safest and most effective medications in psychiatry". That sounds reassuring until you read the article in Medical News Today (August 22, 2006) mentioning that "Dexedrine and Ritalin are drugs used to treat ADHD. The FDA announced changes to their labels, and possibly those of some other ADHD drugs, to include a warning of a risk of heart problems and psychotic behavior". That is not reassuring at all. This book is writing in an authoritative style - sort of the bible of ADHD, the book that tells you what it is, and how to go about it. The only problem is that it is flawed.

Pretty Good
This book was pretty helpful.It covered most topics that I was looking for.

Very User Friendly
I like the variety of ways that the stories can be presented to the student.The stories may be cut into conceptual thoughts, or put into a three-ring binder, placing the pages in plastic sheets, just to name a couple.It leaves room also for filling in any missing pieces of the Social Story puzzle, dependending on the circumstance.

Gives visual insight to struggles
This well illustrated book not only helps those with ASD, but also those of us who come in contact with them on a daily basis.As I read the stories and illustrations, it helped me to understand that even things which we may consider simple, can be a challenge to a person with ASD . Very helpful without being preachy
I found the information in this book very helpful. It is easy to read and understand. It is encouraging. It provides insight into what's going on when you're trying to cast off old ways of living that hold you back.
This book really is ground breaking
Having been raised in a home with an alcoholic father and abusive parents in general, I was left in a codependant stuper.At thrity-something and after the birth of a fourth child I found myself in a serious depression I couldn't shake.Having gone through years of counseling and having dealt with much of my past, I was suprised to see it creep up again.This book gave me some powerfully accurate information as well as some great tools for dealing with my situation.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to finally be rid of the old tapes in their head.

It certainly is a choice
Don't let the title fool you.Although this is a book about dealing with failed adult relationships, the main emphasis in on the phenomena of co-dependency.Unresolved issues of childhood are the primary cause, and Drs Hemfelt, Minnerth and Meier go through many real life case studies that lead the reader to examine their own life, as well as the life of thier "significant other".Realizing how your lowly filled "love tank" is affecting your life is a powerful tool for recovery.Realizing you have a loving heavenly father is a key to recovery as well.I think this book is excellent for anybody experiencing a significant problem with a marriage or other long term relationship. ... Very useful book
As a teacher I found that this book had many fun and functional activities.I do wish this book had more activities for older (teenage) students with moderate to severe disabilities; but, a great book overall.

Best Book for Sensory Integration out there!!
I *LOVED* this book.It was such a quick read that I got through it in two days, *with* two kids underfoot, but there certainly was no lack in valuable content to read.This has transformed the way that I understand and work with my daughter, and she has had a diagnosis for sensory integration disorder for years!I reccommend this to *any* parent, even those without sensory kids....

The best book on NVLD
I have read multiple books on NVLD and highly recommend this book over all of the books as it contains a wide range of data and explains relevant test scores in great detail. She provides excellent information on diagnosing NVLD, coping with NVLD at home and IEP suggestions for the school. Sue Thompson is the guru of NVLD.I also highly recommend both of Pamela Tanguay's (sp?) books on dealing with NVLD at school and at home.If you only purchase one book, Sue Thompson's is the best.

REPRINT THIS BOOK, SOMEONE !!
Although I agree that some of the adult 'outcome' examples are scary, such gives us all the more impetus to help kids w/NLD and to spread the word at any stage; this user-friendly source book is the definitive intro for parents and school-folk (followed then by P.Tanguay's pair of books: NLD at Home, and NLD at School).The base of the front cover states the previous title which (if you're a parent or friend of someone with NLD) rings SO TRUE: "I Shouldn't Have to TELL You..."Well, yes, we do -- and yes, we do need this book back in circulation, maybe with some updating.I've special-ordered multiple copies for others and it's getting mighty expensive -- but worth it."

almost perfect but....
This book is considered the definitive work for parents of NLDer's. I'll admit it's very good but it does have some flaws. I want to start by saying that I was diagnosed with mild NLD at the age of 18.This affects my view of the book in that it really isn't that useful for high school and beyond.Her CAMS don't mix with a university setting and the adults she profiles have depressing lives.Thompson's example of a college student bothers me because she is portrayed as being unable to attend anything but a "local junior college". I also agree with the reviewer who said that Thompson spends to much time focousing on extreme cases, not everyone with NLD needs such intense interventions.Some of the examples are really worst case scenarios. Another thing that I'd like to point out is that not all NLDer's have problems with reading comprehension. I'm an English lit major with no reading problems and have read of other NLD individuals who don't have this kind of difficulty. Finally, typing isn't the magic solution she says it is- the same deficits that make writing difficult can affect typing ability.Good starter book but don't assume your child is going to be that bad. I wish she would expand on this book with something not geared towards just young children. ... Read more

Insightful!
Iyanla is very personable. She really makes you stop and think that we are not crazy or wrong, we all just need to believe and trust in ourselves.

Poorly written and an even poorer message
My wife and I have been married 11 years, things have been better between us. We both went out and bought books to help with the relationship (or so I thought). After reading the book my wife explained that we should "wait and see". I, at the same time, read the 7 Principles of Marriage. My take was, our relationship is bent not broken, let's try to fix it together. After reading half of "in the meantime" I see where she got her opinion of "action". You have two choices from the book: 1. Do nothing until "inspiration" hits 2. Throw away everything and start over.Either way the book gives no other options or practical examples to move ahead together in a positive way. Don't waste your time and hope to God that your significant other doesn't get a hold of this book.

Iyanla Vanzant helps you get to the core of life
Iyanla Vanzant speaks mostly about the importance of "living in the now", something we all know but are too busy to practice. She does a nice job too of comparing the Western style of "Doing" as opposed to the Eastern style of "Being." Linking the two cultural aspects could not have been an easy task, and I applaud Ms. Vanznant for having the courage to reach into a women's soul, and to draw out the ugliness that lives there.

No-nonsense, practical guide.

(Adjunct Assistant Professor of Counselor Education at the University of Florida) is a solid self-help guide to developing lifestyle patterns to offset the disadvantages for attention-deficit disorder in adults. The techniques to improve concentration and memory, manage money and time better, and raise self-confidence, while especially invaluable to adults with ADD, are also quite useful for lay readers of all backgrounds. From the "Five Box" method for sorting one's possessions (fix it, give it away, keep it, don't know, and garbage) to the value of using alarms in wristwatches to keep track of time (especially while on the computer) to using a seven-day pill container to ensure one takes the correct dosage of one's medication over the course of a week, the advice in 10 Simple Solutions To Adult ADD is invaluable. Additional tips for diplomatically disclosing that one has ADD, picking up nonverbal cues in social situations and much more round out this no-nonsense, practical guide.

Recently diagnosed with ADD I've been battling at work for accommodations.My doctor/therapist provided me a document for accommodations just this week.It took the harrassment from a supervisor away.I went to HR and let her know that the Department Manager has been very good about this, letting me know what he expects.I mentioned that I had read in the book about the need for organizers and I would have purchased a Palm today, but the store was out.She got up, pulled out a box and there was a Palm.She indicated that this could be used as an accommodation.I asked if I found the reference if that would be enough and it was agreed.I went back to my desk, and turned to the right page, took it back to her, and she's putting in a request to have it installed on my computer at the office and it's now an accommodation.I've followed the advice in the book about using "to do" lists, and it has really helped to keep me focused just on what I need to do.I highly recommend the book, as well as Sari Solden's "Women with ADD"

Needs updating
While reading some of the previous reviews, I saw one that mentioned "contemporary science" - written in 1999. The first Amazon.com customer review for this book is from 1997. If I'd read it then, I would have rated it higher. But a book that deals with anything medical needs to be updated long before it's a decade old, which this one now is. The chapter on medication is completely outdated; it shouldn't be referred to by anyone who wants to know what options are available now. And while all the scientific/medical questions about ADD/ADHD haven't been answered, more is known now than when this book was written.

All you need to help your child on speech problems
This is a great resource for parents who are trying to figure out if their children have some sort of language problem. The author does an excellent job by naming every different problem and defining very clearly each concept. It is also good to find resources to help your child in case you do not have insurance that can cover your child's speech therapy. The cases presented are also very good since some of them can apply to your real life situation. If you are looking for a great tool to confirm language issues, you have it!

Lots of great info and very easy to read!
I found this book to be an excellent and comprehensive guide. My daughter has a speech and language problem, but until reading this book I didn't realize how her listening problems were related. I showed the book to her teacher and we able to get an audiologist who could diagnose her auditory processing problem. Now she is getting the right help, and I will be eternally grateful to this author for writing this fabulous book. I wish I had read this when she was younger because perhaps I would have known what to look for. The symptoms are subtle in the younger child and become a little more obvious once they are trying to function in a classroom. I highly recommend this book!!

FABULOUS BOOK!!!!
I couldn't disagree more with the previous review. I found this book to be totally reassuring. In fact, over and over it tells the parent it is not your fault. It lists ways you can help your child, but doesn't ever say you caused the problem.I have a 6 year old son with a speech and language problem, including apraxia at one time. There IS information about it in the 2001 edition. I wonder if she has the most recent edition? I found the book to be easy to read and understand. It was much more helpful than the other books I have read or purchased on this topic. It was recommended to me by my sister, who is the head of a major pediatric speech pathology clinic. A Good Reference Book
"Kids in the syndrome Mix..." is a good reference book, listing disorders and giving tips for parents and teachers that should help them understand the children in the syndrome mix better. However, I feel it lacks in-depth information and details on direct application in the classroom. That might be beyond the scope of the book; therefore, you will have to look for that information elsewhere. In conclusion, the book serves the purpose of a stepping stone for further study - or it can be read as a quick guide, depending on your level of interest.

Great Read - Lots of Information
This book is useful for so many reasons.It is great for teachers or others who intereact with individuals with a variety of special needs.It is perfect for parents who are trying to narrow down/begain to understand their child's diagnosis.It is perfect for a child who has an Alphabet Soup diagnosis - multiple dx - for one book which address all of them.I would reccomend you read this book!!It is well writen and full of great information
