3-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction, but more substance needed
I was disappointed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
"Finding Your Focus", by Judith Greenbaum and Geraldine Markel, offers practical advice for common difficulties faced by adults with ADD.
4-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Just Meds thinking, Take Charge of your Life!!!!
In this book authors Judith Greenbaum Ph.D. and Geraldine Markle Ph.D. string together a phenomenal amount of information in a concise and straight to the point fashion. This is definitely what I would call a life skills book focused on strategies for overcoming many of the daily problems associated with adult ADHD.The authors have wisely decided to stay away from spending too much time on biological root causes, instead focusing on practical tips and strategies for maximizing success in daily life. The book seems to blend elements of cognitive therapy with a well defined process task analysis system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding reference tool
I went into a bookstore in search of a different book but purchased this one instead after browsing through the chapter I identified as my 2 year old daughter, a highly sensitive child.I agreed with everything the author described in regard to this character, and I even found myself in the book.As a teacher and parent, I believe this is the best book I have seen in recognizing and nurturing the five different "challenging" children.Even my husband, who is always a bit skeptical with parenting books, was amazed at how on-target this one is.I highly recommend this book for anyone not only wishing to identify with a "challenging" child but also desiring to assist that child as he/she deals with the daily struggles that face that particular temperment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone needs this book!
I took this book out of the library because of my high-energy, aggressive 2 year old, and am now here to buy it because I need to have it by my bed until I memorize it!!Only half kidding...it has been enormously helpful in thinking about his behavior. But the surprise is, all of my other kids are in here too, as well as me and my husband!Anyone with a strong personality was probably a difficult child, at least in some ways (ask your mom!!), and this book gives you insight into how you got the way you are, and how your personality might intersect with your child's to cause trouble understanding each other.2-0 out of 5 stars Didn'tmention mental problems child may have!
This book is okay if you don't have a child with severe problems. My child is ADHD and ODD but there is no mention of coping with mental illness in this book.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for understanding the differences between boys and girls with ADD/ADHD
This is a very good book for assisting parents in understanding the different ways ADD/ADHD presents in girls than in boys.I found it very useful in understanding some of my daughter's behaviours. This book describes, in a very helpful way, some of the ways a girl adjusts to ADD/ADHD as she grows and the different responses she may have to dealing with her ADD/ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
I couldn't put this book down. It enlightened me to so many traits my daughter has that are ADD and not just a spoiled, picky, manipulative, spacey, forgetful, disorganized child!! I knew some of these traits were ADD, but not things like a very picky eater, or tactile sensitivity (she refuses to wear clothes made of certain fabrics, or what appears as over-reacting when she scrapes her knee or other minor injury). I've recommended it to several other mom's and dad's who have ADD daughters!

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Girls with AD/HD
This was an outstanding book.It read just like how my daughter behaves. It gave great information on the different stages of girl hood and what you may expect. My daughter is age 6 so I have a long way to go but it gave great suggestions. It was one of the best books I have read on ADHD.It was an easy read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It was as if a weight was lifted off us!
Thank you so much for putting into easy to understand words so that regular people will know what 'unattached' and 'unbonded' mean. We were dealing with many of those issues with a child we became guardians of. We knew something wasn't right but did not know what. We looked on the internet, talked with friends and family, asked at our local library for help. After reading 20 books on the subjects of adoption and foster parenting we finally came up with 'High Risk' and everthing came together. We were in shock at first until we read that not all psychopaths exhibit all the symptoms outlined in the book. Our child had many of them and we felt better because we became empowered by this knowledge and were able to move ahead and try to help him and our situation. I recomend this book to anyone who can read. It should be a must for anyone contemplating becoming a parent. Please help these children by not creating them first. Please help them by reading this book and taking the next steps.
5-0 out of 5 stars positively engaging children
As a personal life coach and elementary school teacher, I found this book extremely helpful for both parents and professionals who want to know more about high risk children and positive parenting. I have heard Dr. Magid speak and his personal approach with children is to positively engage them and to look at their strengths. Although he reported in the book about many different treatment processes, he did not endorse one over another, and I like the fact that he clearly discussed how early consistent love is the best treatment for children. His empathy for children in trouble and their frustrated parents is clearly evident to me.

1-0 out of 5 stars holding therapy is dangerous
The "holding therapy" recommended in this book can result in the injury or even death of a child. While parents of adopted children with attachment disorder may need to seek the advice of a therapist, this is not the sort of therapy they should subject their child to. It is a shame that people can still purchase this book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

To the outside world, a child who exhibits an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)--manifested by constant counting, cleaning, checking, or hoarding--often seems "tuned out" from reality. But for the estimated 3 million-plus people driven to perform such ritualistic behaviors, just the opposite is true: most are painfully aware of their heightened perceptions. Left untreated, a child with OCD can suffer from debilitating anxiety and embarrassment, far beyond the normal levels most healthy kids experience during their school years.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An encouraging, enlightening and hope-filled place to start
When my child was diagnosed (finally--after years of "knowing" something was wrong, after years of professionals being evasive or rude)this was the first book I turned to, and it filled both me and my child with hope. It's a fantastic overview and resource written in a clear yet intelligent style. The Yale-Brown scale is extremely helpful. The list of medications found to alleviate symptoms was helpful (and occasionally cautionary--a good heads-up for when doctors get goofy perscribing). The list of resources, including newsgroups, web sites, meetings, is great--there are others out there...lots!The section that deals with co-morbid conditions was helpful, too.A great overview, with a tone that will calm a frantic parent, and bring a family up to speed for their newly-diagnosed child--so good that years later, we still have it on our shelf and refer to it often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good indepth Help
There seems to be few OCD related books availible in the United Kingdom, I ordered this book from the USA and was not disappointed. We needed a reference book to help with my sons condition, this book certainly fits the bill, Buy It!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on helping kids with OCD!!
This is the only book I've found that covers everything about OCD in kids, including dealing with it in the family and at school. The parts on therapy and medications are very thorough, but it goes way past just the medical stuff. I have read some of the books written for doctors but this is down to earth and written for PARENTS--makes it easy to understand the choices you have to help your child. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars somebody else's kids
Torey Hayden, author of "One Child," charts a year in the life of a special education classroom with some unusual and unforgettable students. They include Claudia, an academically gifted, pregnant twelve-year-old; Tomaso, who witnessed the death of his father; Lori, a girl whose abuse left her unable to read and write; and Boo, an autistic boy with a fondness for giving weather reports. How they bond, become a class, and deal with the largely unsympathetic outside world makes for a remarkable story.Even more gratifying is the epilogue, in which we learn that all four made gains after they graduated from Hayden's class, all quite remarkably.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
While I didn't enjoy this book as much as some of the other Torey Hayden books I've read, I did like this book. 4-0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable
Somebody Else's Kids was the first book I read of Torey Hayden's. Since then, I have read her statement that this is the one book of hers that she cannot bear to reread as it was penned quickly and she doesn't like the writing. Read more

Delisle (Professor of Gifted Education at Kent State University) is an informative and "parent friendly" reference for enabling a truly gifted child to expressively and productively achieve their life goals, develop sound character, and general enjoy their life. Examining overly excitable children, the type of gift granted to each child, working with the school system, dealing with perfectionist children, being a positive role model, building a child's character, and helping kids achieve their set goals and dreams, Parenting Gifted Kids is very highly recommended reading, especially to all new parents of a gifted child.

3-0 out of 5 stars too negative!
I must say that my feelings about this book are mixed.I agree that it has some incredibly helpful practical advice. However, this book has such a pessimistic view of NLD children. The social skills section was great in terms of the advice, but it seems to imply that there is no chance that A NLD child will escape her school years without being a loner, a victim, and an unhappy child.
4-0 out of 5 stars Well organized and well written
First, you don't need your highlighter for this book!At the end of each chapter, the author does it for you. I found this book informative and helpful.2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I found this book dissappointing. It gives readers misinformation that can make symptoms of NLD worse, not better. For example, the author encourages the readers to allow video/computer play stating it "builds eye-hand coordination".Not only will this NOT develop eye-hand (that comes from anticipating a three dimensional object coming to you in space and manipulating the hands to accurately receive it" but fixation on computers often leads away from motor development and soical interaction. We don't need more misinformatoin about NLD. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
I bought this book because the teachers think that my grandson may be dyslexic and I would recommend it to any parent or grandparenmt like myself. My daughter bought another book but we both like this one best. This book has so much practical information and the author puts it all into clear terms. My daughter and I both understand what a diagnosis entails now and we know what to expect and ask for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overcoming Dyslexia For Dummies
Overcoming Dyslexia for Dummies is a tremendously valuable resource. I ordered this book because I was struggling to help one of my adult literacy students who has dyslexia. What a difference this text has made! I have applied much of the author's advice, and I have noticed a big difference in my student's academic skills and her self-esteem. Incorporating multisensory activities into learning and using several of the recommended tools for dyslexia has proved incredibly helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overcoming Dyslexia for Dummies
This book is awesome !!! It is my Bible and the only tool I needed to help me understand, find the right help and support for my daughter who was recently diagnosised with Dyslexia. I have recommened it to all my family, friends and colleagues.

5-0 out of 5 stars it is what it is...practical advice
i too felt as if my daughter was described perfectly in this book. i have begun to implement a lot of the suggestions in the book and keeping notes on what works and what doesn't.this is the first book that i add to my library on the adhd subject and it was a great buy! it's very easy to read...read it during a 4 hour wait in the dentist's office! there are sections in the book that don't pertain to my daughter yet but i know i'll find useful advice as she grows older. i welcome any suggestions on other useful books that i should read and add to my library. thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK FOR PROBLEM SOLVING
This book is really great for those looking for solutions to everyday problems. We bought this book because we were tired of all the "medical stuff". We wanted a book written by parent of children that actually have it.

5-0 out of 5 stars ADD/ADHD IS REAL
This is a good book because of it's format; ie: Question/Answer. I think it might even be more helpful to those living with, or who associate with others who have ADD/ADHD.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great AD/HD Resource
This a great AD/HD resource. The book is written in a very ADD friendly Q & A format. This book will anser many commonly asked AD/HD related questions. Many of the questioned answered are ones that you may have always wanted to know but were afried to ask. 4-0 out of 5 stars I'll show you my disease if you show me yours! Respond
That made me laugh. I have to ask do you believe in AIDS? Do you believe in cancer? Do you think people in wheel chairs can walk? If so way? Have you had any of them? Do you really know what they are like? How do you know they are real? How because science tells you and that same science also has done brain scans on people with AD/HD and has proven that it is real. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Scientific without being too hard to understand
Finally - a book on ADD/ADHD that includes scientific/medical information that is informative without being overwhelming. All too often books on ADD/ADHD are written in an overly simplistic manner that almost seems condescending to a reader's personal experience and intelligence. Kudos to Thom Hartmann for writing a comprehensive book that speaks to areader as an equal while raising the reader's awareness to a higher level of understanding.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not Great
The book provides an interesting perspective on ADD as well as ADHD, suggesting that the "disorder" was once an adventagous evolutionary adaptation. He cites a lot of research which does support this idea, but in some parts the book drags a bit. Particlarluy if you already know a good deal about evolution. In some parts Heartman takes his ideas a bit too far and has an almost religious zeal for this topic. Overall the book could have been organised better.
3-0 out of 5 stars Hartmann can't help but spiral downwards, again & again, into pro-Liberal diatribe...
The author had a clear mission and a refreshing angle on ADHD (which I and my son have). He even went so far at one point to state (not suggest or hint) that ADHDers saved the world 40,000 years ago by being able to come up with solutions to problems caused by the near-simultaneous eruption of three major volcanoes that ushered in an ice age in less than 12 years (so he says!).

5-0 out of 5 stars No other book like it on the market!
I wish someone could have given me this book when my daughter was born in June 2005.I had a hard time finding information that deals with specific issues relating to Babies with Down Syndrome.

4-0 out of 5 stars Babies with DownSyndrome
I had recently found out that my future grandchild was diagnosed with Down Syndrome and was anzious to start educating myself. The book helped me understand the syndrome and realize that we need not be afraid of what the future holds. Since then I have found out that this baby will probably not go full term, but what I read made me realize that I should not be afraid of hearing Down Syndrome in the future.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please don't buy this book first
I was given a copy of this book when my son, Zachary was born.As another reviewer mentioned, it was quite scary reading all the things that MIGHT be wrong with him medically, along with the quotes from parents the author included.I'm sure the quotes were a well-meaning inclusion from the author - but each and every one I would review to be extremely non-descript, even bordering negative. As a parent of a child with DS - I can tell you first-hand that my experience has been nothing but non-descript...but overwhelmingly positive. My son, at less than 2 years old, has already brought so much joy into our lives and countless others.A child with Down Syndrome is a blessing in disguise. He give to me so much more than I give to him as you wil hear from just about ANY parent with a DS child - but not from the author or the outdated quotes she chooses to include in her book. ... If you think you know everything about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), then you should still check out this comprehensive book from the American Academy of Pedia-trics. Even the most veteran ADHD parent will discover some new avenue to assist their child in growth and societal assimilation.

5-0 out of 5 stars With vital and meticulous accuracy
Developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics without commercial involvement of any kind, ADHD: A Complete And Authoritative Guide is a "must-have" reference and resource for parents addressing the phenomenon of Attention- Defecit Disorder with Hyperactivity in children. Chapters address identification and diagnosis, commonly coexisting conditions, treatment options, the role of medications, behavior therapy, helping one's ADHD child succeed in school, unproven treatments for ADHD, and much more. A disclaimer warns that the vital information in ADHD: A Complete And Authoritative Guide is meant as a supplement for a physician's diagnosis and recommendations, not a replacement, yet its vital and meticulous accuracy and tested methodologies are a blessing to anyone involved in the raising or care of ADHD children. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book on Future Planning
I just wanted to share this book with those who may be interested. It is so detailed - I have never seen so much information in one place in my entire life about future planning for a child with a disability. The first section just blew me away - the second and third - same thing.I look forward to finishing the remaining 400 pages of this whopper of a book (which is 642 pages in length). This book has already answered every single question that I've ever had about the future, in regards to my son, who has Autism.I would venture to say that the education that I have received in the first 240 pages makes it worth every single penny - and then some.Everything from the differences in housing options to caregiver options to community living to managing finances to specifying your child's joys so that they may continue after your death (even down to writing a letter of intent which specifies that your child likes to bowl or go to the movies!).Over and over again I've seen the authors stress how important it is to GET INPUT FROM THE PERSON WITH THE DISABILITY and to TELL THE PEOPLE WHO YOU EXPECT TO CARE FOR YOUR CHILD about your decisions, which involve them.Readers are prodded to write a "letter of intent" and to revise it each year so that it's always current and changes with the needs of your child. The book is expensive but if you're looking into this topic, I would highly recommend making this purchase before consulting an attorney or hiring someone blindly. Please note that this is not my "formal" review but is my way of sharing this book NOW instead of waiting until I'm completely finished.

What a great book, it covered every issue that we have experienced with our child and made me feel better as a parent!

5-0 out of 5 stars Children With CP: A Parents' Guide
This is an excellent "from the beginning" book.It is a great resource for parents with any special needs child to help them navigate the services available for their child.
5-0 out of 5 stars I have a child with Cerebral Palsy.
Children with Cerebral Palsy - A Parent's Guide saved my life.My beautiful 2 yr. old daughter had just been diagnosed with CP and I felt as if she had been given a death sentence. After reading this guide for my child I was able to mourn the loss of a "normal" child and get real with the fact that she had Cerebral Palsy and that this disability would not go away. I gave a copy of the book to my mother so she could better understand CP and not to be afraid of it. Emily is now 10 yrs. old and in 4th grade (regular schooling). She is getting A's and is walking with the use of a walker. Emily has been a real "teacher" for kids not familiar with CP.THANK YOU Elaine Geralis from the bottom of my heart for all of the research and unbelievable information you put in your book.I no longer see CP as a "death sentence", but an opportunity to educate others about Cerebral Palsy. I have recommended your book to several "newly diagnosed" families and you have helped them too.I recommend this first and foremost to anyone that knows someone with CP or is a caregiver of someone who has Cerebral Palsy. ...
