5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for any family!
This book is extremely well written and is a must have for anyfamily's bookshelves. It details childhood problems and helps parentsdecipher when their child's problems are "more than just a phase". I found it to be a huge help. Not only does this book discuss the symptoms of phases; it also describes how to treat these "phases". I really recommend this book for all parents, with children of any age.

Murphy's "Out of the Fog" was published in 1995 -- that's 11 years behind the times! While he might include some informative and interesting stuff here, ADD/ADHD research is piling up with new insights and implications for personal and social-political use.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Light Barrier
This is a thought-provoking book. The subject is a complicated phenominon that should be examined by peer review in similar, less anecdotal evidence. As a graduate engineer and a long-time photographer, I am aware of some of the properties of light itself as perceived by humans, and view this subject with considerable interest. One of my grandchildren has benefited substantially from Irlen prescribed glasses. Thus,I look forward to future examination of this phenominon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Impressive and readable
This is a good, solid book on the topic of light-related reading problems. The author, who has problems with light sensitivity herself, has two children who encountered reading problems and other problems of visual perception that were remedied by using tinted lenses and colored sheets of plastic. She describes their lives before getting glasses and overlays, the puzzlement of opthalmologists and other specialists, and the vast improvement in their lives afterwards.5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!
This readable book is a "must read" for parents, teachers, and other professionals concened with the education and welfare of children. It also has implications for the workforce where employees suffer from light sensitivity in the form of headache and fatigue, lowered productivity, and absences from work.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
13 years ago, we belonged to one of Buddy Scott's support groups and used his book as our manuel. I am firmly convinced that my husband & I would have been divorced now if we didn't have the help from Buddy's book. It is clear and concise with common sense approach to dealing with an out of control teen. It also gives principals to help younger children before they reach that horrible stage in their life. I will forever be grateful for Buddy's help! I am always recommending his book to those who are struggling with difficult teens. It's like receiving something substantial to hold onto along with the Word of God in a emotional emergency.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful help for my family - to be passed on.
Our group of four couples "taught" ourselves the associated class based on the principles in this Christian-based book; three couples for rescue and one for prevention.I am now teaching the class for thethird time and, as word spreads, several dozen families have been helped inrescuing their rebellious teens and by learning prevention techniques andguiding principles used in raising their children. We recommend it highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars A welcome resource when your child has you at wits end
Our church used this as the core text for a series of group sessions for hurting parents-- parents of teens in various states of rebellion, destructive lifestyle choices, and apathy. It proved to be quite helpful,well-grounded in Christian principles, and with many good insights andpractical steps to take. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Stellar Achievement!
With great candor, Dana Buchman shares her wondrous strange journey through the harrowing maze of special needs children and education. How very lucky her daughter Charlotte is to have such an intelligent and loving mother behind her every step of the way, brave enough to tell her story warts and all!I read the book in one huge chomp, loving the author's voice and wry self-humor.And while the journey she shares is not easy or well-marked, her story sheds light for those who follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Candid and Inspiring
Ms. buchman's honesty and openness in learning to accept her child's learnong differences is inspiring. A great book for all parents!

2-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't relate
As the parent of a child with a disability, I wanted to like this book more than I did. I appreciate Ms. Buchman's candor about all the events in her life and am glad that it has helped some parents. However, I could not relate to most of what she wrote.

If your child has any kind of sound problems or just doesn't seem to talk clearly, buy this book.It is interesting and gives you all the information you need. There were fun activities to do with my daughter to help her learn to say her /l/ sounds. She is doing so much better and I am thrilled.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guide
I was happy to write the foreword for this book because I believe all parents should have this information. The information provided in this book is practical but comprehensive. The numerous exercises you will find throughout the book will show you how to enhance your child's vocabulary and early literacy skils, and will encourage your child's ability to say sounds clearly and correctly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
I found this book to be a great resource.Every new parent should have a copy.I found the information to be accurate yet easily understandable to non-professionals.It's a great source of information for parents and parents-to-be.

5-0 out of 5 stars For non-verbal child - this is a great book!
It is truly frustrating when your child who should speak - can't speak. Just because they cannot speak - does not mean they DON'T understand. They do understand. It is just that they way of showing you they understand is not available to them yet. 3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but not instructional enough
My son, 3, has been using PECS for 6 months now and I bought this book hoping to find more instruction on the use of PECS and different sentence structures. While the book gives a good overview of the system, I think there is far too little concrete information for parents wishing to implement PECS in a home environment.I was disappointed that right when I thought the author would go into detail about a topic, he simply referred to another publication for more information.3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but not instructional enough

5-0 out of 5 stars Bill Clinton's classic ADHD symptoms, Hillary's compensating
Having noticed and become more familiar with symptoms and failures of ADHD, it is helpful for how often these factors show up in society. For example, the "enigma" of Bill Clinton may be confusing to many, but may be a result of the class symptoms of many of the characteristics of ADHD undiagnosed persons whose spouses often compensate for them in many situations and circumstances. This can be seen in many cases where she "spoke for him," in interviews, for example, to explain what he meant, or to clarify his views, specifically in the 1995 interview about Flowers when he said "he had caused pain in his marriage." Reviewing the many complaints or observations of his staff about his personality suggests that he was indeed not only brilliant, but also suffered the effects of ADHD that had never been diagnosed, and should be looked at with what we are beginning to learn about adults with undiagnosed ADHD. All signs point to this problem and may explain much of his approach and his behavior, especially the desire to do everything at once, and to jump around from thing to thing. The extent of the effects of childhood trauma and the possibility of undiagnosed ADHD together make for a very interesting analysis of this complicated person, and how his family and friends deal with, or cover for him, in many situations. Hillary has classic characteristics of many of the compensating ADHD behaviors that unwittingly spouses fall into using to cope with their ADHD mates over time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable information for parents and educators
Dr. Palmer's book, Parent's Guide to IQ Testing and Gifted Education, is a great resource not only for any parent who has ever wondered if their child might be gifted, it also will be highly informative to anyone interested in how and why schools use IQ tests. This book covers a wide range of important topics, such as the characteristics of giftedness, self-esteem, bright children who have difficulty with learning, what an IQ test does and does not measure, the influences of nature (heredity) and nurture (environment), and more. As a psychologist and parent myself, what I find particularly nice about this book is that it's written in easy-to-understand language and is not loaded with technical jargon. This book would be a valuable addition to any parent (or teacher's) personal library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Parents!
This book was recommended to me by a friend when my child was going through the gifted testing process at school. As far as I know, this is the only book written for parents like me whose kids are being tested and who need to understand gifted screening,IQ testing, gifted programs, and different school options. This book is written by an educational psychologist who has lots of experience and great insider advice for novice parents. This is a great reference for parents - highly recommended! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars There is hope and there is help!
I normally wouldn't respond to a review of my own book, but I couldn't let this one go.
2-0 out of 5 stars Anecdotal with a lot of grasping at straws
The focus of the book seems to be how to try every snake oil solution first, add in a lot of prayer and then seek help from qualified ABA therapists. It is informational and a good read - for what NOT to do. Try - 'Overcoming Autism' as your first book - Lynn Koegel and Claire LaZebnik. I give it two stars since it doesn't really educate how to approach autism so much as how NOT to approach autism.

5-0 out of 5 stars The #1 Intro Book
As the parent of an Autistic son, I cannot say how appreciative I was to have found this book. When you first hear of Autism and think that your child could be on the spectrum, you can feel lost. When we were looking at where to turn, we found Lynn's book. The wonderful thing is that the book gives you hope mixed with lots of practical advice and some ideas on where to turn.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware
I am 37 years old and trying to determine if I (and possibly one of my children) have ADD through both my own research and thorough medical and psychiatric investigation. This was the fifth book I read on the subject, primarily to gauge the 'flip side' of the arguments in this area. All authors are entitled to write their own opinion, it is their book, however I encourage potential buyers to do some research about this author and her biases and to formulate their own opinions to determine how much weight to attach to this information as it is presented.I struggled to agree with much of the content as it does (as advertised) run contrary to most everything else I've read and most everything I've experienced personally.I further don't believe there was any earth-shattering revelations nor reasoned counter-arguments to the mainstream ADD body of knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Both kids came off the Ritalin, this works
I have two children that were diagnosed ADD and ADHD in 3rd grade. I went along with the program of Ritalin and then Adderal (until I learned what it can do to their livers over time and how taking these drugs can lead to depression and the need for anti-depressents which can then really lead to more problems)and then I pulled the kids off the medications. I didn't tell the teachers, lol, until a year and a half later. But by then I had read the book and was going through the process of elimination to discover what was creating the problems with my kids.
1-0 out of 5 stars Ridiculously biased and transparent
Unlike 90% of those that have reviewed this book, I have actually read it!I will not write a bought-and-paid-for glowing review stating how brilliant this author is to exposing the "evil" psychiatrists and their crusade to "manufacture" various conditions for their own advancement and that of the pharmaceutical industry. It is absolute garbage and, unfortunately, paints psychiatrists in a poor light.

5-0 out of 5 stars NAET
I have read the book and agree that the title can be misleading.HOWEVER, that being said...I have brought my autistic twins to a NAET practitioner...after the first treatment, I already see a difference. My oldest twin is able to put 10 words together in a sentence (2 days ago he struggled to put 3 words together). My youngest twin is less agitated and more happy.Until you bring your autistic child to a NAET practitioner and at least try 1 appt. you should not judge the content of the book or its title.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it with open mind and you will learn!
My son,Jonathan was diagnosed with Autism when he was 3.5 yrs. old and I was faced with the dilemma as a practicing M.D. for 16 years in allopathic medicine.I was told by many so called "specialists" that he will never recover since he was heavily impacted. After visiting NAET website, I read her books and immediately signed up to learn how to practice NAET on my son.Jonathan is on the road to recovery!I've helped not only my son but other autistic children as well as ADD, and ADHD children. Dr.Devi is a medical doctor and a chiropractor as well as a acupunturist, and a doctor of oriental medicine. But most of all, she was a patient who suffered enough to truely "CARE" about others who live in quiet desperation. She has finally connected the dots between Eastern medicine to Western medicine to benefit the humanity. She strongly encourages autistic children to continue with ABA and other modalities(PT,OT,Speech Therapy etc.) while NAET is ongoing. Be open-minded and humble enough to learn what NAET is all about! It may change your life if you let it!

5-0 out of 5 stars NAET WORKS ON AUTISM!
Steven, a seven year old autistic child began treatment on the same day when I started my treatment. I distinctly rememberhis appearance on the first day of his visit in Dr. Devi's office. He was bumping into things and people, had no awareness of the surroundings or people, was flapping his hands, pulling his sleeves, chewing his clothes, running back and forth in the waiting room aimlessly, etc. Then I didn't see him for a while, because we both had appointments at different times. I saw him the other day again, and I couldn't recognize him. His mother said he had 11 treatments. He has not yet treated for immunizations. He was sitting in the TV room with other children and watching TV calmly. What a transformation! I wonder why more people don't look for NAET or take their autistic children to NAET practitioners! Steven's dramatic changes forced me to read this book. What a book! Great information for the parents of autistic children. As usual lots of useful self-help tips for the parents. This book is packed with information. Everyone with an autistic child or relative must read this book. This can give a new meaning to your life. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helping a CHild with Nonverbal Learning Disorder or Asperger's Syndrome: A Parent's Guide
This is a good book.It has practical tips that can be immediately utilized. It also goes into how you can help your child at school with IEPs, etc.I would recommend it as a supplemental book for parents with children having this problem.

1-0 out of 5 stars Derivative
It seems like this book just copied information from earlier books on the subject and rushed to capitalize on the increase of AS diagnoses. Atwood's book is far more interesting, informative and original. I've seen this woman speak as well, and she seems a bit unclear.

2-0 out of 5 stars Aspie Mom
As a mom of an 8 yo with Asperger's, I am always looking for new ways to help my son. This book just wasn't helpful to me.It could be my son's ADHD makes his issues so much different than those she addressed.I just didn't find anything in there to help him so I didn't bother finishing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Judy, you're amazing!
I am so happy I have this book, it brought tears to my eyes as I have been reading it.I have a daughter who is now almost 7 years of age, who has special needs.I have been through so much with Doctor's and testing, and sometimes forget about what else is going on in life.I think anyone who's going through a challenge with their child being a little different from the rest, should own a copy of this book. It's sense that should be common, for both parents and doctor's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well done
This book is actually funny. It hits on the aspects of ADHD perfectly, right down to the angelic little sister who can do no wrong. There are some words in the book I wish were not there, like stupid and crazy.I bought it to read to my 5 year old who is ADHD, but with no learning disablities...yet. So I figure we will skip the part on learning disablilities, and being given less homework from the rest of the class.Use it for a tool to help explain what we are doing as a family to address the ADHD, and help him control his behavior.Read it first, cut out what you don't think applies or needs to be heard by your child. The book is mostly informative, and really funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great, down-to-earth kid's view of ADHD!
I bought this book for my 6-year-old nephew and will read it to him when he comes to live with us soon.I can't wait, because it is so simplywritten and straightforward, I'm sure it will help him understand what wehave not been able to tell him about his ADHD condition. It isentertaining, and because it is told in a kid's point of view, it showsADHD with concerns that kids would have that adults might not have eventhought of.I recommend it if you're trying to find just the right way ofreaching your child or student! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Suspicions Confirmed
Having been a teacher in a secondary school for the past 14 years, I have seen the entire gambit of children in areas of behaviour and abilities. I must say I had puzzled over the ability of these so-called ADHD children to sit for extended periods of time engaged in pursuits they enjoyed. Even my own child would act out in uncomfortable situations. I witnessed the change from one situation to another, wondering how a "chemical" or an "organic" condition in the brain could be manipulated, or turned off and on so readily. From my own post-secondary studies I understand that disorders such as depression or psychosis can not simply be turned off and on, though in most cases individuals with these illnesses get "better," often even without intervention. Yet the condition is there for the duration. A person does not simply snap in and out of them at will. Yet I have seen children labeled as ADHD do just that, spending hours at Nintendo or video games, or even reading a book for an hour or more. I also agree with Dr. Weathers that in many cases there is a lack of proper, loving discipline in the homes where many of these children are raised, and that the behaviours shown by these ADHD children are complex learned behaviours. I feel strongly that Dr. Weather's book should be mandatory reading for all teachers as part of their training.

5-0 out of 5 stars WebCAER Really Works!
I read Dr Weathers book and talked to many of the people who had been through his treatment before making an appointment for our family, and, specifically, for my daughter who had been diagnosed with ADHD.She is 11 years old and had been on Concerta for over one year.My last resort was medication but the school and then her doctor recommended it.She also went through a battery of psychological tests to verify her initial diagnosis of ADHD.
2-0 out of 5 stars Advertisement not book
The author has some interesting ideas about the genesis of ADHD. However, the only solution he offers is to come to his clinic and try a revolutionary new treatment that no one else uses and has not been scientifically evaluated. Basically this is a promotion for his clinic and not a book about ADHD. Although, it appears that some people have had success with his program, I wish I had known the book was not a self-help book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Speaks to a parent in ways we can help
Found this book very helpful as it took a different approach than the "parents backoff" approach. In our case, you could see a difference in our child almost immediately upon getting some food back in her system. The psychological work became much easier as she could think clearly. We didn't have the fighting etc and we didn't go to school with her to eat.We just used a modified version to get her started to renourish herself.Helped to have a guide that showed parents could help.

4-0 out of 5 stars something to go on
If you are a parent of a child who suddenly spirals into anorexia, you will be shocked and scared, and immediately seek the "professional help" everyone recommends.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for families with very sick children
As the father of a child (age 12) who suffered from anorexia and was helped back to health through a family based approach I am grateful to Laura Collins for getting the word out about this relatively unknown, yet very effective, approach.

4-0 out of 5 stars will make you angry
Teacher Torey Hayden takes an unusual case, a fifteen year old boy named Kevin who doesn't speak, or is "electively mute." With Torey's help, Kevin begins to speak again. His progress at the hospital, however, is erratic because of horrifying circumstances that brought him into custodial care. His sister was beaten to death by their alcoholic father, and the father also physically abused Kevin, and urged his sisters to abuse him sexually as well.
