5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I used this book when I was desparate to find a way to treat my child who has selective mutism. The book was extremely helpful and provided easy to implement suggestions. My son is doing very well because of this book. This is particularly important because I had such a hard time finding a therapist for him and ended up doing this myself.Thank goodness for this book with its logical approach to a frequently overwhelming problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST book on Shyness
I did not understand the previous review of Dr. Swallow's book.It did not appear to seek to present "medical evidence of shyness," but rather attempted to present practical suggestions to parents regarding the behavior of their shy children.I found this book to be very helpful....Thanx Dr. Swallow....changed my child's life.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very good
This book was a disappointment. The medical and anecdotal evidence of causes of shy behavior offered was minimal and the solutions very simplistic.Don't waste your money with this book.It didn't teach me a thing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for all educators of children with PDD
This book provides clear, easy to use strategies for teaching and communicating with children on the autism spectrum. The author's contend that behavioral problems exhibited by children with autism are most often the result of frustration that comes from their inability to communicate effectively. Behavioral problems can be successfuly addressed by focusing on what the child is trying to communicate.Rationale for the strategies suggested is provided.I recommend this book for educators and parents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to implement methods for enhancing play skills
There are so many books on autism and not all are applicable to our family's situation.I tend to read a library copy before purchasing. When it came time to return this book, I decided that this was one for ourpersonal library. It's easy to read and I will refer to it over and over. Methods are easy to understand and implement. As a parent of an autisticchild, it's one of the few books I've felt that will be invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book for anyone working with children with autism
This book is a wonderful resource for learning how to approach children with autism. It is very easy to read and deals with a variety of different methods that can be used to deal with just about any level on the autisticspectrum. As a speech therapist working with variety of children withautism, I continually return to this resource to help plan my assessmentsand intervention. It is an excellent resource that addresses communication, play, pragmatics, parent desires, and self-control at a variety of levels. The chapters that deal with specific areas, such as enhancing socialcommunicative interactions, often provide you with the necessary paperworkfor assessment and/or intervention in the appendix. This is a must buybook!I would highly recommend this book to anyone working with childrenwith autism. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Does Sari know me personally?
After reading her book I feel as if she does know me personally. Not even my mother could so accurately describe how I feel about my disorganization or my lack of attention. The nice thing about this book is it doesn't try to group all women with ADD into the same category. Some of us are hyper while others, like me, tend to withdraw from interaction.I could continue to identify with this book but my main point is you need to read it.I especially want non ADD people to read it so they might be able to understand some things.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive explaination
I have recently been diagnosed with ADHD. My pyschatrist (a female) recommended this book. Although I'd read "Driven to Distraction" and "Delivered From Distraction," this book truly explained the disorder in its many forms and specifically how it impacts women. Sadly, I recognized myself in its pages... It gives me hope, however, to discover that I am not alone, and after years of feeling as though I haven't lived up to my potential, (I'm 29) there IS a reason why I feel this way. I can move forward with the tools (medication, structure, therapy) suggested in this book. It is a necessary component to any female ADHD/ADD patient. It is lenghtly and kind of wordy at times... It's best read in spurts or small chunks, as much of the information is dense. Take your time and read this one-- it's worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Women, uncap your pens
If you're ADD like me -- "ADD Like Me" wow, what a great movie title! Sorry; I digress -- anyway, if you are, then you'll be scribbling and underlining like mad all through this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing insight
I wish I'd read this book years ago. This is the 2nd re-written edition of the book, which Samenow explains differs from the first in that he distinguishes more specifically between the behavior of an antisocial child and phases of bad behavior of other children.
4-0 out of 5 stars Discerning observations are more important than simply asking, "Why?"
The search for why a child behaves a certain way is a search for what we as parents can do about such behavior. We believe that finding answers to root causes will also provide us with the power to defeat the bad behavior and replace it with the type of behavior that will make any parent proud. But reading Dr. Samenow's book, _Before It's Too Late_, makes one realize the importance of understanding what the behavior actually is before we can even begin to ask the question, "Why?"Once we can recognize patterns of behavior in children, only then can we apply the appropriate responses-regardless of the causes of such behavior.Does the child's deficiencies interacting with family members or classmates or performing assigned tasks indicate insecurity, or do these indicate unrealistic attempts at manipulation?Dr. Samenow does not go into a detailed plan of action for dealing with each of these or other various alternatives, but I believe most parents will intuitively know the proper responses once they recognize what type of behavior they are actually dealing with. And that is exactly what this book explains best.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not an excellent book, keep looking.
I found this book extremely frustrating and a disappointing. On and on the problem is covered and that is almost the entire book. There is very little offered in the way of helpful strategies that the average reasonable parent would not already be doing. For a parent that is struggling with a problem child keep looking because there are no answers here in this book just more of what you already know yourself. It occurred to me that I wish every councilor would put their attitudes and thoughts down in a book. That way you could read the book and in one day determine if you thought the psychologist was going to be helpful instead of risking months or years in counseling before you found out. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute must for families with food allergies
After learning that our son had five severe food allergies and ten additional serious food sensitivities, I checked this book out of our local library. It only took a few pages before I realized that I would definately want to purchase the book to have on hand permanently. It is an invaluable resource for understanding, identifying, and dealing with allergies of all kinds, and will be the best money you have ever spent in the interest of your family's health. It exceeded my expectations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for every parent
Allergies are more common than we think, especially in children. We often hear about kids with reccurent ear infections, chronic stuffy nose, or puffy eyes. We also know at least one hyperactive child, or a child with eczema.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for parents considering Ritalin for their child

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but becoming dated
Dr. Shaw has made many contributions that have helped many children, mine included.A few years ago I referenced this book often, looking for ways to help my son.At the time, I would have recommended this book as a must have for every parent.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing information
Between this book and Dr. Bakers book (DAN Protocol book)the information provided is unreal. These are some amazing Doctors on a mission which I will embark on now. I have a daughter just diagnosed 3 months back with Autism and will follow the protocol they outlined. My biggest hope is my daughter will fall in the 30% this works for. I'm a Culinary Graduate from Johnson & Wales and am begining my Journey into this now. I can be reached at sqlscripters@hotmail.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Try not to get over whelmed by the technicalities...
This is a technically meaty book for the medical professional that can overwhelm the layperson. Yet the area of Autism, Asperger's Syndrome and PDD study is in desperate need of the fresh out-of the-box thinking that this book provides. A parent can learn alot skimming over the "why's" and "what fors".For example; focusing on bold print sub-points instead of trying to follow the fine points of metabolism described in the following paragraphs, will serve you well. This book will give you a good overview of groundbreaking research and treatment. Most of all, it will give parents hope that our children may still be capable of functioning better, not just coping with limitations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic ending to a fantastic story
After reading One Child the prequel to this novel I was intrigued. The novel left me wanting more and thats exactly what I got with The Tigers Child!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sobering & Honest
Having read One Child over and over and over again starting at the age of ten, I was euphoric to come upon The Tiger's Child in a bookstore 15 years later. I had wondered about Sheila my whole life, worked for several years in a preschool in great part due to that astonishing tale. I believe all the magic that was in the first book, because that is the truth about the reality of children. The Tiger's Child was somehow more sad, even if in much subtler & less horrifying ways than the first book. Sheila had left her childhood, and Torey L. Hayden (who was just 24 in the first book!) was not in a position to help her to quite the extent that she had been able to in the earlier years. Torey L. Hayden writes very honestly and does not attempt to soften any of the difficulties in this later period. Her work as a teacher is remarkable & awe-inspiring... I just wish that somehow the world had continued to provide for Sheila as much as Torey had been able to in One Child.Iache that the extraordinary, brilliant light that was Sheila was not left with as purely a happpy ending as the first book leads us to believe is possible...but I strongly recommend reading both stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Satisfying and Heart-Warming
When I first heard about TIGER'S CHILD, I knew that I had to read it to find out what had happened to Sheila.I was not disappointed.I found that Sheila had carried a great deal of anger around with her all these years toward Torey for "showing her the good life and then deserting her just like her mother had."This rather dumb-founded Torey, because she was just doing what all teachers do at the end of a school year--saying good-bye to her students and moving on.Torey had to work very hard in this book to build up a trust level again.Sheila was not going to make this easy. However, the ending was satisfying; and we are left knowing that Sheila will be all right.I don't know how Torey makes her writing such compelling reading.I could not put the book down--even when I needed to look at scenery on a vacation.I recommend this book to anyone who needs a heart-warming read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very inlightening
This book taught me so much I didn't know about Dyslexia, and encouraged me to continue believing that Dyslexia is a gift from God that will help me in my life.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Gift of Learning- Scientifically Bogus
Although there are some helpful techniques that Davis describes ( Dial analogy, using clay etc.), this book presents ADHD, dyslexia and other learning challenges in an overly simplistic way that I did not find usefull. The basics of dyslexia and ADHD, according to Davis, can be solved through simple visualization techniques, such imaginging your "mind's eye" at a certain point behind your head in order to ground you. Basic explanations of cause and effect, using clay models, will supposedly, develop the concepts of consequences and order that ADHD children are missing. In reality, working with children with learning disabilities is much more complex and is rarely "solved" through a standard, one-size-fits- all visualization exercise. Having presented no scientific research or any sort of studies to independently back up his claims, Davis falsely creates expectations of magic cures and instant healing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overcome learning problems without medication
If your child is experiencing learning problems and you don't want to use medication - this is the book for you! Easy to follow "how to" that leads you step by step through the process necessary for overcomimg problems with handwriting, math or ADD. Ron Davis uses very clear, easy to understand language, and writes from more than two decades of personal experience in the field. A great resource for any family with a child who is not achieving his or her potential! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Neurotypical (NT) and autism/Asperger's (a/A) - Meet Halfway
This book brings to mind June Carter Cash's beautiful, fair-minded statement to husband Johnny Cash:"I'll meet you halfway."A more fair and loving statement has yet to be made.
5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and entertaining in equal measures
This book brings a much more detailed perspective on early adult life on the autistic spectrum than many others. The fact that it is looking at AS through a man's eyes is also worth noting. The author touchs on career choice issues that many with AS have agonised over. To disclose or not to disclose being the Big Question.I won't spoil your reading by recounting the author's experiences.2-0 out of 5 stars ONLY FOR NON-ASPERGERS
I am an adult with Aspergers and bought the book after reading the great reviews here. Although it is a good book that shows some aspects of the Aspergers world to outsiders, for us who live and swim in it, this was an unsatisfying book. It merely scratches the surface of our world. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on ADHD
This book is the best book on ADHD that I have seen (and I have read several of them). Its easy to read and tells you everything you need to know about ADHD, from basic stuff to advanced knowledge. It explores ADHD from every aspect and offers solutions and speculations.5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Parents with an ADHD child
I have read many books about ADHD since my child was diagnosed a few months ago. This is by far the best book I've have read about the subject. Not only is it comprehensive about medications and causes, it addresses real behavior problems with practicality and humor.I read the whole book in one night, and came out of it with a new understanding of my son. It's comforting to know he's not the only one "acting like this".I highly recommend it to anyone working with an ADHD child or adult.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life!
The paediatrician who eventually diagnosed my son recommended this book to me.I read it straight through, in one sitting, cried, laughed and came out the other end with a totally different view of my son.He was 10 and regularly said he wanted to kill himself. All his teachers just said he was badly behaved and disruptive but I knew there was something wrong.A year later and on Ritalin he is a different child.I have now bought at least 12 copies of this book (it has a different name here in England) to give to everyone who has any contact with an ADHD child. If you only buy one book, buy this one.Even my teenage daughters, who had no sympathy for their younger brother have read this and actually enjoyed it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The book I turn to for in-depth understanding on ADHD
Fiveyears ago, I picked up this book and, mesmerized, read it in one sitting. With content so rich and insightful, I felt perhaps I should stop and absorb each chapter before continuing. Yet Mate's elegant writing was too captivating and flowing to put down.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Thesis, But Not Helpful
Dr. Mate provides an interesting thesis, but it just doesn't ring true. We have counseled thousands of children with ADHD, including hundreds which came from stable, two-parent homes where the parents were very in tune with their child.
5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe the most original book aboutADD & most ignored
Mate offers a very fresh, insightful interpretation of ADD as a cognitive vulnerability that may or may not manifest itself, or manifest itself in varying degrees depending on one's environment. In this sense, the book takes a ecological approach to the problem; ADD, according to the author, is not biological determinism and it's not cultural construct and it's not some conspiracy to keep certain children in their place and it's not a pharmaceutical ploy for more business.Anyone who has taken prescribed Ritalin knows it's about the cheapest prescription drug on the market (and has been around nearly the longest). The author simply points out that according to current and provisional informed research (and research can only be provisional unless we can stop time), the idea that symptoms of ADD are a result of many forces--chemical, environmental, cultural, and developmental--just makes sense.Since Mate's analysis is moderately complex in comparison to most analyses in most popular ADD books, it may turn off those who want a quick pat explanation to the "disorder."The author is a doctor with ADD; so his analysis is both research oriented and phenomenological. He is also smart enough not to use the word "prove" in his book because he knows he isn't proving anything: he is simply making his own best inferences based on current knowledge. He makes sense; and he adds to the current literature on the subject. If you have been diagnosed with ADD, you will nod your head in agreement through much of the book. The author also has a gift for writing, having been a former English teacher. Thus, his language is on a level of sophistication which does justice to the subject, and lends his observations authority. This is far different from the "cookbook" breezy style of so many other authors who address the subject. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must have reference for pediatric occupational therapist
Maryanne Bruni has taken the best of both worlds of knowledge-therapist and parent of Down syndrome child--and combined them when she wrote this terrific guide. Listing developmental sequences step by stepfor scissorsand handwriting skills helps me explain to parents what to work on at homeand what to expect next.Thisguide should be in every pediatric facilityand early childhood program's library. It covers all the practical hands-ontreatment ideas that get glossed over in OT school. Thanks,Maryanne.

5-0 out of 5 stars Drugs Are Not The Answer!
Drugs are effective for some people with ADD. Or so I've been told. I tried Ritalin, Welbutrin, Adderall, Zoloft, Lexapro, Neurontin and others in various combinations. My ADD did not improve but I experienced a host of side effects including dizziness, insomnia, headache, increased irritability, loss of physical abilities and back pain.
5-0 out of 5 stars readable and well informed
I picked this book up because I was seeking to learn more about neurofeedback, and now it is one of my favourite works on ADD and brain care.I appreciated the background given by the authors on how they arrived at their current position; their range of experience is reassuring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed and helpful for parents
As a school system employee, I have worked with many students in the past years that fall on the Autism Spectrum.Recent research indicates that 1 in 166 people fall somewhere on the autism spectrum.Such children can be extremely challenging for parents, but parents with the right information can be empowered to help their child improve. This book is an excellent and detailed resource for many of the issues parents face in raising a child on the Autism spectrum. The book begins with a great description of Autism, and is especially useful for parents who are reading their first book on autism. The book moves into more inspirational mode, and discusses the importance of acceptance and a positive attitude in the face of adversity. The book continues with information and strategies on how to cope at the family level (e.g. non-disabled peers relationship with an autistic peer and the challenges for married couples). It also discusses strategies to talk to teens about puberty, the birds and the bees, and proper hygiene. A strength of the book is the detail it goes into. For example, the author discusses strategies in dealing with teens who have sensory issues and don't want to comb their hair, etc...The book also supplies valuable information about transition to high-school and beyond, and future employment. It also educates parents about special education law.I would recommend this book as a great resource for parents of children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful stuff
"Chantal Sicile-Kira has written a book for parents that does not steer them down an agenda-filled path. She has instead selflessly provided readers with their fullest possible options towards the care of their autistic adolescents. Furthermore, she backs her writing up with testimony from many of the world's most notable people diagnosed along the spectrum. A thorough effort. Parents would be well-served to purchase this book."

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fuel to Keep Going
Amidst a surge in books on autism and adolescence comes this praiseworthy contribution for parents of teens and `tweens with autism spectrum disorders. In a frank yet soothing voice, author and mother Chantal Sicile-Kira offers page after page of real-life wisdom addressing difficult adolescent issues: hormones, hygiene, friendships, sex and safety, transition issues, changing social and academic expectations. At a life transition that often finds parents exhausted from the daily struggle that can accompany autism, this book is the fuel they need to power themselves and empower their child on the journey to adulthood. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Socially ADDept
Excellent resource.I've been working with my 10 year old son who has A.D.D. and I am seeing results in the first week.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for every family with learning challenges!
Where do you turn when you find out your child has special learning requirements? It can be confusing, overwhelming and frustrating. Socially ADDept is the bestlearning tool a parent canuse to help their child. Itis clear, practical, easy to read and fun for kids and parents to usetogether. Dr. Giler has created the next best tool to having her in yourhome as a guide and expert.-Cherie Carter-Scott, Ph.D., author of"If Life is a Game, These are the Rules"

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids Guide to Making Friends
When a friend recommended "Socially ADDept," Dr. Janet Z. Giler's manual of social skills for children with ADHD, I accepted the suggestion with some reluctance. Like every other parent with an ADHD kid, I'm already drowning in pedagogical advice. If raising one of these children were assimple as "love and logic" or "parenting without punishment" these kidswouldn't be any harder to raise than all the others. Pedagogical sloganssell books, but they don't work with bundles of hyperactivity like myAlexander, who's incorrigible social skills have made it difficult to finda baby-sitter willing to spend an evening with him, let alone a teacherwilling to address his academics.
