5-0 out of 5 stars Variety of topics
It's a handle book that has many different topics to help your child or student.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I found this book to be very helpful in working with students both individually and in groups.I used the activities for students ages K-5.Everyone enjoyed the activities, and the structure of the lessons helped me to guide discussions and have questions prepared to ask even on the busiest of days!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for higher functioning special folks.
I found this book to be extremely helpful for my highly-functioning autistic child. It covers a vast range of situations and involves the student in thinking about solutions and coming up with their own answers.I like it so much that I'm buying one for one of his teachers as well.It is geared to higher functioning students -- others could use this as a framework and simplify things a bit, or try Carol Gray's book "The New Social Story Book" which is written much more simply and directly. It's also an excellent book, but was too simple for my needs. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Do the program, ignore the propaganda
If you're a parent looking into treatment options, then I most definitely recommend this book as a part of your treatment program. It's one of the few 'step by step' approaches to teaching social skills out there, and it seems to make sense.
4-0 out of 5 stars A nice component, might not be a comprehensive treatment approach
For those of you who like to skim, my 'nutshell' review of RDI: It's a great program for social skills and joint attention. It's not a complete program for an autistic child. Now for the wordy version...
4-0 out of 5 stars Great method, BUT....
RDI is a self-proclaimed deficit-based approach, meaning it attempts to remedy the core difficulties in disorders such as autism. Many methods such as ABA, on the other hand, are based around teaching specific skills. For example, an ABA program might involve sitting a child down and teaching them 10 new vocabulary words, whereas an RDI program might focus on teaching children to attend to their parents speech and actions so that new vocabulary is learned naturally (yes, that is a much simplified explanation, but a general overview for anyone unfamiliar).

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best!
I own literally dozens of books on ADHD and have read dozens more. This slim book (only about 125 pages) is absolutely one of the best.I ordered it on the recommendation of a friend and when it arrived I was disappointed to see such a thin book. How could it add anything I didn't already know?Well, it did!It sums up the latest in scientific approaches to ADHD, de-bunks the myths and presents it all as clearly and concisely as I have ever seen.An excellent investment!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Dr. Kutscher!!
An excellent, concise, no-nonsense, inspirational book. Superb as both resource and guide to help us do just what we want to: LIVE RIGHT NOW! Thank you very much indeed, Dr. Kutscher.

5-0 out of 5 stars ADHD Book:Living Right Now!
I only wish this book was available for me when my daughter was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome back when she was 12.By the time ADHD was diagnosed she was 19 and we had gone through many years of disruption and blame.I will recommend this book to family and friends.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars These Authors have "been there"
This is a fantastic book. My second daughter (now aged 7) has global and verbal dyspraxia (motor planning). We have been to many specialists for diagnosis. We have been in speech therapy since she was 2 1/2.We have had some OT, but not as much as is discussed in this book.We have been searching for ideas and answers, reading books, etc for most of her life. This book is the absolute best I have read for describing "What is it like, being a sensory-sensitive child and also a parent of a sensory-sensitive child.A Child whose world is not near as easy as it is for ordinary children."This book offers insight, relief, excellent advice and reasonable hope that you, as a parent, can make a significant improvement in your child's life.It is also very readable (many of these types of books are hard to finish).Thank-you, Thank-you, Thank-you, Karen and Karen.Well Done.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mother of a Sensory Kid
This book is a good primer for parents of kids with sensory processing disorder.Book is organized well and is an easy read. The book describes the characteristics of this disorder in segmentswhich makes it easy to use it as a reference guide. The book does not offer a lot of ideas to help with sensory diet (keeping your kid happy and meeting his/her needs)--for that I recommend, Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book does praise OT's
My review here is mostly a response to the poster who seemed to think the book doesn't give OT's the recognition they deserve.I disagree. I haven't read the entire book (so far, only just over half), but I got the impression from reading this book that only OT's know anything about this disorder- aside from phsycologists and the like.In fact, in my own experience as a mother of a child with this disorder, only the OT (out of the other therapists & the pediatrician we've been seeing) has given us any information about SPD.Now, she didn't give us the name of the disorder, despite having studied it for 20+ years- I had to get that information myself off the internet after doing some googling. But in any case, nobody else seems to know a heck of a lot about it.And the authors of this book IMO make that quite clear- if you want to know about SPD, if you want your child diagnosed, etc- go see an OT!

1-0 out of 5 stars Find a Better Book
For the record, this is a book with three different introductions, and each chapter is written by a different author. So you'd think it would represent a fairly broad perspective on various topics.Maybe it does. But I just don't care for the perspectives.5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource
With the second edition of "Children with Autism", Michael Powers has again provided families of children with autism (along with professionals)an invaluable resource for living with, and loving, a child with autism. In straightforward, non-technical language, "Children with Autism" addresses the needs of persons with autism and their families across their lifespan. From diagnosis, to early intervention, to adulthood we are presented with practical information that, in addtion, has a fairly broad research base. I am on my third copy as I keep lending mine out and, for some reason (perhaps the value of the information contained) they never seem to be retained.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
Dr. Powers has been a major contributor to the understanding of autism spectrum disorders for many years. The ORIGINAL book was one of the few available on the subject at the time of publishing, and while it is NOW outdated, it has been replaced by the current edition published in 2000.This edition contains much useful information that parents will not find elsewhere.I was, therefore, somewhat confused that the reviews for the previous edition are still on this website, as they really describe a different book, which is very misleading. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Resource for Parents, Health Care Professionals, and Direct Support Proviers!
There are none better than Brian Chicoine, MD and Dennis McGuire, Ph.D to write a comprehensive book regarding adults with Down syndrome. The information in this book is founded by research of literature, discussions with experts from around the world, and from hands-on care for over 3000 unique adults with Down syndrome from across the country. The authors are the life-blood of the Adult Down Syndrome Center in Dempster, IL - a one-of-a-kind clinic - and are two people who are doing this work for all the right reasons.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Parents and Professionals
I am the mother of a 34 year old daughter with Down syndrome, and this is one of the best books on DS that I have ever seen.It is well written in understandable language and offers practical suggestions and steps to take. The authors of this book have worked with thousands of adults with Down syndrome at the Adult Down Syndrome Center in Illinois, and they really know their stuff. The book touches on all aspects of life for adolescents and adults with DS.There is a lot on what factors influence well-being and how physical problems can affect behavior. It addresses when things are "normal" and when to worry. The book is well organized, so you can go to the sections that apply to your situation. And if the person in your life with DS doesn't have any behavioral issues now, this book can help you keep it that way.I highly recommend this book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Way overpriced
First off, this book is waayyyy overpriced. There are other good books on the market at half the cost. And there are other books that are better written, too.I was surprised at the sloppy writing of this new edition. If you are intent on buying this book, find a used copy of the last edition, which is better, or choose one of the better books out there.Don't go by ratings alone.Check out the book in your local bookstore first, just to be sure you find one that meets your needs. The information is this book can be found on the Internet on different sites, so there is no needed to shell out hard-earned dollars for this one.Find something else and you won't be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a mom with a son with Tourette Syndrome
Whether you are new to the world of "special ed" or you are a seasoned veteran, attorney, Lawrence M. Siegel's book will guide you through the advocacy maze with ease. It is a valuable resource of information, including, but not limited to: an overview of special ed and the IEP process; sample IEP forms and letters; organization and planning tips; a listing of support groups, advocacy organizations and federal and state departments of education. Laws and procedures change frequently, and regulations can be different from state to state, so new editions are printed periodically. You can even take advantage of an "update service" that offers a 35% discount on any future purchases.4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview, but doesn't replace having an advocate/lawyer
This guide provides a good overview of the special education and IEP process, as well as some sample forms and letters. It also usefully collects the relevant federal statutes and regulations. But I found the descriptions of the process to be quite different from what happens here in D.C., so that ultimately its utility was somewhat limited. There is, perhaps, no solution to this -- the book can't be written for every school district in the country. So while the book is useful, in many areas you will be well served to hire a special ed consultant and/or attorney. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If I could own only one book on Asperger Syndrome...
Honestly, this is a must have as far as I am concerned. It is a small book, but it is full of essential information that can help parents and professionals understand how to help individuals with Asperger Syndrome reach their potential. I have recommended this book to many parents and professionals in my work as an educational specialist and find it helpful when working as a member of an IEP team. Busy professionals and parents who advocate for children with Asperger Syndrome will find themselves referring to this book again and again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for a certain type of Child with Aspergers
Aspergers Syndrome is becoming much more commonly diagnosed in children. As an employee of the school system, I have worked with many children with this diagnosis in recent years. While children who are given this diagnosis have certain characteristics in common, there are certainly many differences between such children. The book is particularly helpful if you are a parent or educator involved with a child who has temper tantrums or meltdowns.Certainly many children with the diagnosis have this problem, but just as many others do not.The information presented in the book on strategies to deal with a child with Aspergers who has temper tantrums is excellent. If the strategies are applied consistently, they may help many children from repeating the temper tantrums or meltdowns as often in the future. If you are working with a child who does not have this pattern of behavior, I would recommend finding a different resource to help that person learn social skills, etc...

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed
This book wasn't at all what I expected, although it did have some good information.I found it to be geared towards AS students who are having a hard time in the public school system. It would be an excellent book if this is your current situation. However, for homeschooling a kindergartener the information was not all that valuable and I would suggest that you look at other books first. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Language Skills are a Prerequisite
This whole book is based on the assumption that your child has very developed language skills. Here's a quote from the introduction on page 6, "However, those children who do not have at least average language and intellectual ability will have more difficulty understanding the language-based solutions that form the basis of our program."
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Parents of an Asperger's Child
The book has some really fabulous suggestions for parents of Asperger's children. How to calm your child, how to help you child make friends, how to stay on topic and have a give and take conversation. The section on personal space and the suggestion of using "conversation feet" makes this book an excellent choice. The suggestions are really simple, along the vein of: Hey why didn't I think of that.I highly recommend this book as it also gives parents insight into what makes their Asperger's child tick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parenting Your Asperger Child Best Book I have found!
I purchased this book because I was looking for a few ideas for assisting my son and got a lot more than I had even hoped for. This book gives an overview of the many types of asperger traits and how these traits might play out in real life. For instance, my son is an emotional high anxiety Aspie, and this book provides actual type conversations with each type of asperger child. I found the conversations helpful because they taught me the best method of asking questions and of assisting my son to a less emotional state.

5-0 out of 5 stars ExcellentBook
I highly recommend this book to parents, teachers and anyone interested in learning more about ADHD. I am actually currently taking my Masters in Special Education and this book was a wonderful source of information. It is a very powerful book where the author talks about his personal experience growing up with ADHD. All parents of kids with ADHD should read this book because after this experience they will definitely understand better their kids' behavior. I congratulate the author for sharing his personal experience and for showing through his writing how parents and teachers have a crucial role in developing kids' self - esteem

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book You'll Never Forget......
As a freshman in college, I was finally diagnoised with ADHD after always having problems growing up and never quite fitting in with my peers. After being diagnoised I continued to struggle to find the support I needed. 2 years after I was diagnoised, through the ADHD support group that I have been part of, I was encouraged to read Dr. Jergen's book. It took quite sometime for me to finish it but it was the most touching and honest story. I finally felt like I knew someone that has gone through similar struggles like me. Dr. Jergen's book has given me hope. It has shown that someone with severe ADHD can find ways to cope and be successful. I could barely finish his book because I was so touched and moved to tears. Thank you!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT!!!!!
This is a must-have book for parents with teenagers with ADD.I also bought for me and for my son's team of teachers, "Teaching Teenagers With ADD" by the same author. Both are excellent books!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, readable, compassionate
This is another excellent book by Chris Ziegler Dendy. The author presents practical information that will help parents in their day to day struggle to deal with the changing world of an adolescent with ADHD. She clearly has dealt with some of these stiuations herself, so she brings humorous and compassionate anecdotes to illustrate the factual material. I would highly recommend this and her other books on the practical aspects of dealing with adolescents with ADHD

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Place to find answers
This book was so helpful to me! My 13-year-old son was just diagnosed with ADD and it was a God send. It has so many great suggestions, stories and advice. I stayed up all night reading it! It was like an autobiogrpahy of my son for the past few years. He was especially relieved to figure out what was wrong and read the other kid's experiences. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Glowing Review
This book is necessary for anybody looking to implement or improve an already existing activity schedule. Although McClannahan and Krantz are experts in the field of behavior analysis, they wrote the books so that you don't have to be a near genius I.Q to understand it. The book is perfect for parents and teachers as well as students studying behavior analysis or special education teachers interested in working with autistic children. The first chapter is dedicated to discussing what an activity schedule is and how your child or student will benefit. The subsequent chapter delves into the pre-requisite skills the child will need prior to beginning. The authors explain each pre-requisite skill, why it is necessary and provide examples of each skill. The next few chapters discuss how to implement the activity schedule as well as how to measure progress. They really left nothing out. Toward the end of the book, they explained what to do when the activity schedule is mastered and provided a great deal of detail on the dos and don'ts. It is clear, that the McClannahan and Krantz really want readers to be successful at creating and teaching activity schedules. They have also co-authored Teaching Conversation to Children with Autism, which is also worth checking out. My hats off to them on such an awesome educational easy to read and understand how to book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Appropriate goals.
The goal of raising any child is to guide them into independance, and though many autistic children will never reach complete independance, it remains an important goal.Independance is an important factor in self-esteem and is essential for entering any portion of adult life.I was consistantly frustrated with therapy manuals which required my complete and undivided attention at all times.I'm under no delusion that I will be forever available to my autistic son, and it would be nice for me to feel that he could get up and at least dress himself at some point without my verbally prompting him.2-0 out of 5 stars 'This show stinks.'- Tony Kornheiser
I read this book and became annoyed on two points. The authors incorporate and instruct in using PECS, TEACCH and ABA components throughout the book--yet fail to mention these highly useful and universally known interventions by name. This smells pretty arrogant, considering that originators of and recognized experts in these fields are alive, well---and also Ph.Ds.Two: They malign discrete trial teaching in a businesslike tone, with no proof to back their statement. Their stance:DTT does not build give and take conversation skills. However, I could not find anything in this book indicating their concept had mastered this issue either.Their supposed 'initiated interactions' are still scripted; human interaction has been replaced by reliance on the continuing existence of a picture or word to prompt a response in the form of taking action. So, it's still a duck.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent step-by-step
Our daughter has DS and is having some GMS issues. However, this book provides instruction on how to progress to each step toward walking. The therpist we use has began to instruct us on some of these steps, but our daughter has already been through them, so it is keeping her ahead of the game. I've heard a lot about Patricia Winders, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy other books of hers as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy!
This book not only tells you the progression a child with Down Syndrome should follow, it then gives you suggestions of things to work on and checklists at the end of each chapter so you know what your child should be doing before you really move on to harder skills. Wonderful help for both a parent and a professional!

5-0 out of 5 stars The "bible" of physical therapy
Children with Down syndrome often have low muscle tone (hypotonia) and increased flexibility which can affect overall gross motor development. There are many issues that parents need to be aware of if their child has hypotonia. Even the way you hold your baby can affect his gross motor development. This book shows how to encourage and maximize a child's gross motor development - head control, rolling, sitting, cruising, walking, kicking, jumping - from infancy to age six. Pat Winders has written the "bible" of physical therapy for children with Down syndrome. It contains useful information for parents, therapists, and teachers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Carla Turnquest, Bahamas
This book was my first introduction to Selective Mutism. The case history of Nick described my son and our struggles point for point.Without having a caring teacher at the time I was able to implement some of Gails strategy. and I shared this book with a new teacher who was able to follow the very simple and practicle plan for my son.More important than the informtion is this authors' willingness to reach out to everyone who purchases her book.I received a email from the author after bying the book and it has change our lives and open our world to an enormous bundle of information and additional treatment strategies.I recommend this book to every parent with a child with sm.It is a must have for all teachers, as these strategies can be applied with just little effort. This book is for anyone who think that they cannot teach a child with selective Mutism.Just got the supplement, another must have, excellent resource material.Thank you Mrs. Gail Kervatt for showing teachers that they can still make a big difference in the lives of all children.

2-0 out of 5 stars stunningly disappointing; from a counselor and parent of a SM child
This book is not a guide at all.It is a review of a single case, and even there it focuses only the interventions of the reading teacher, mentioning but not defining the interventions of teachers, parents, and a private psychologist, or others. The vast majority of the book is padded with weekly intervention sheets which document a school year's worth of a small amount of progress; the bigger leaps in progress took place after the school year ended and again, the keys to this change are not defined.Another portion of the book is some Internet research from early 1999.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Readable, but not enough information
I bought this book in hopes of getting a variety of strategies to use with a selective mute student on my caseload.I found this book very readable and engaging, but I didn't find enough strategies for it to be as useful as I'd hoped. It did give a nice overview of selective mutism and did a fabulous job of illustrating that it is not intentional misbehavior, but rather an unusual reaction to anxiety.Because of this, I find it very useful to share with parents and other professionals. However, I did not find the variety of strategies I was looking for. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the cost
