5-0 out of 5 stars Attention Deficit Disorder
I found this book informative with very current, new ideas.I knew that ADD ran in our family but after reading this book, I realize that there are manifestations of it that I had never considered ADD.Now I realize that even more of us have this condition. We present with diverse symptoms, abilities and coping strategies but according to this book they are caused by the same types of brain problems. That makes very good sense to me.It explains a great deal. I am 63 years old and have known 6 generations of my family from my great grandfather to my grandchildren. There are some with ADD in each generation. What I used to think of as quirks I now realize are ADD traits. This book has allowed me to be gentler on myself and members of my family.I bought 4 copies of this book and am giving them to family members.I hope that they will find this information as helpful as I have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Authoritative
The author of this wonderful book combines neuroscience and phychology to help dispel some the myths people have surrounding Attention Deficit Disorder. I could hardly put it down and often found myself lost within the pages for minutes on end. Much better than 'Driven to Distraction' IMO. Damn, what time was that meeting tomorrow? Oh yeah, I actually bought this for a family member who suffers from ADHD, so the doctor says. I'm thinking about buying a copy for everyone in my immediate family and probobly even a few distant cousins I haven't seen in years. Man, I wonder how old Doris is now anyway. Wasn't she the one that was adopted? No, now that I think about it I'm pretty sure that was Greg. Doris must have been the one with the irritable bowel.
5-0 out of 5 stars A 10 STAR BOOK!
OUTSTANDING BOOK!I recommend this book to EVERYONE interested in the most current information on ADD and ADHD.Dr. Brown uses the term "ADD syndrome" to refer to a cluster of impairments in the management system of the mind. As a femaleadult with ADD and a high school resource specialist, I have experienced the effects of this syndrome both personally and professionally. As an educator who sees the actions of students with ADD frequently misunderstood by their teachers, I believe the information in this book will make a huge difference for students in the classrooms of the teachers who read it; Dr. Brown explains not only how these impairments affect behavior and time management, but more importantly, how they can affect reading, written expression, math, and memory. As a person with ADD, I especially liked his concept of ADD syndrome. Dr. Brown explains the complexity of this syndrome in an easy to read and easy to understand format. This book is for everyone who has been touched by someone with ADD: parents, friends, spouses, siblings, relatives, teachers, doctors, psychologists, and especially, any person who has ADD. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book that has hands on practical knowledge to pass on.
I have been teaching my son, and trying to figure out just how the information is suppose to get in and this book was the lightbulb. After reading this book I thought I would try some of the ideas with teaching him spelling and other subjects.I was not expecting results, wow was I surprised! He has just taken off like a rocket. He can't get enough. He finally says that the subject matter makes sense to him and it is truly just the way in which it was being presented to him.I am a believer.I have a right brained child!

5-0 out of 5 stars A teacher can still learn
Yes, a teacher can still learn - grow - and become even moresuccessful!Thank you Jeffrey Freed for opening my eyes (I already knew there were different ways to reach children, but now I have something to share in writing)! This book has wonderful ideas on how to teach those students who just don't "get" the methods we are using. Is something wrong with these students? No, however, there is something wrong with the way we are teaching!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very insightful
While I don't agree with all of the author's ideas, I found the book very interesting and read it quickly. The best thing about the book is that it looks at ADD children in a very positive light and highlights their unique abilities. It is targeted for a certain type of child, however. My daughter fit about 85% of the author's criteria and I found it not only helpful, but hopeful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! I think Torey Hayden is a genius novelist!
This book was fantastic. I had only read one of Haydens books previous to this one but you can be assured that I will have to get my hands on her whole collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Miracles can happen for the most hopeless lost causes"
I am also the mother of a "Special Needs" child; I happened to discover "Twilight Children", Torey Hayden's most recent book by chance in a local bookstore. I was spellbound and couldn't put it down, and when I had read that book, I ordered everything else she ever wrote from Amazon (how's that for a recommendation?). This book,(and I say this without exaggeration) literally made me gasp at some parts and cry at some others. This is a book that I feel would be of value to parents of special needs children, but also to members of Alcoholics Anonymous, or anyone who believes (or wants to believe) that miracles can still happen to the most hopeless of "lost causes".

4-0 out of 5 stars just another kid
In this book, Torey Hayden teaches a challenging class for emotionally disturbed children consisting of Shamie, Geraldine and Shemona, three refugees from Northern Ireland, one of whom (Shemona) is an elective mute; Dirkie, who has schizophrenia; Mariana, who is sexually precocious but academically behind; and Leslie, also autistic and unable to communicate. Hayden could badly use an aide, and she accepts Leslie's mother, Ladbrooke, who is a beautiful but aloof women with a history of alcoholism and child abuse. Through their relationship, Ladbrooke comes to trust Hayden and begins to face up to her problems.Through working with the children, Ladbrooke develops considerable self-esteem.All but one of the children improve, as well, and make dramatic gains in academic and social skills. In an epilogue, we learn of updates, the most remarkable perhaps being Ladbrooke's.This is anything but a grim read, however, Hayden seasons her book with a healthy dollop of black humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was the first step to our son's recovery
Two days after my son was diagnosed with autism, I dragged my mom to the library to see if I could find out what in the world this meant to us.One of the first books that we stumbled on was this book by Karyn Seroussi. After reading several excerpts about her son to my husband, we agreed that we saw a lot of parallels in our own son.By the end of the weekend, we decided to take a leap of faith and implement the GFCF diet that Ms. Seroussi described.
1-0 out of 5 stars Huge guilt trip!
I read this book to try and find more help for my son with autism. After learning about the diets I realized they would be nearly impossible for my family to implement. These diets are very expsensive and my son would probably refuse to eat most foods and recipes talked about in the book.Realizing this I felt extremely guilty that I wasn't willing to do everything possible for my son. I have had my son in early intervention, speech therapy and a very demanding and structured program for over 3 years. These therapies have made a world of difference for him but he is still autistic. So, if I am unable to put him on this diet does this mean I have failed him as a mother?I don't think so.We can only do what we are all capable of doing for our children. We shouldn't be made to feel guilty if we don't do everything that everyone else has done.It would be nearly impossible to try every single thing suggested for helping to improve symptoms of, or even "cure", autism.I say give yourself a big pat on the back if you are doing the best you can for your child with ASD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unraveling the Mystery of Autism and PDD: A Mother's Story of Research & Recovery
Excellent book! A must read for any parent (or teacher) of a child with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) or any neurodevelopmental delays, ADHD or allergies. It reads like a suspense novel, with the author/mother as detective, desperately, yet thoroughly trying to find clues to her son's sudden demise. Through her dedication and persevearance, she finds successful treatment for her son, and unravels a series of inexplicable biological mysteries involving foods, allergies, vaccines, viruses and their serious effects on the developing brains of children. It is a wake-up call to what we have previously viewed as "genetic" and "untreatable" and should make the medical community seriously abandon this old paradigm and put effort into establishing a new paradigm, where a causal relationship exists between ASD and its related disorders and biological and environmental triggers. This paradigm shift would dramatically alter the management of children diagnosed with ASD today and in the future. This book shows the power of a determined parent - reminiscient of the story of "Lorenzo's Oil". The moral of the story - don't rely on your child's doctor to tell you about this mode of treatment, or on any nutritional management - they are not prepared to do so. Traditional AMA medicine is geared towards quick diagnosis, treatment with drugs, and possibly some therapies. Often this involves treatment of symptoms, not cause. This book also made me wonder just how many 'troubled' or behaviorally challenged children could benefit from dietary changes, not medication. Mrs. Seroussi has done a great service to autistic and neurodevelopmentally challenged children and their parents. She has put into words an alternative choice for parents and offers hope, something the medical profession as a whole has not only not offered, but at times has suppressed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank Goodness for This Book
If it weren't for this book, and for James Webb, I might have believed the teachers and psychologists who told me that something was really wrong with my daughter. After reading this book, I realized that several things were really right with her, but that we weren't handling her in the ways most likely to help her adapt and succeed.
1-0 out of 5 stars where to start?
I have so many problems with this book that there is no way one review can include them all.I'm going to list some of the major ones here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Vital information at an appropriate time!
After having read this book, I can't help but wonder how many lives have been damaged by the ignorance of those involved in the Mental Health occupations.I hope when parents (or even non-parents) read this book, they learn how important it is to be self-informed (at least to some degree) before they go trusting "professional" help, especially when professionals these days are so sure of themselves and have so much power over others' lives. It's a fine line between playing God and being an appropriate therapist when it comes to understanding human behavior. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must read!
This book provides really good insights into children with Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism. Recommended to me by a school social worker, and I understand why.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful and practical
As a parent of a child diagnosed PDD-NOS, I was elated to find this book.I like the fact that it groups the Asperger's kids with the High Functioning Autistic kids, because in my experience, the two groups do have so much in common (and diagnoses can be somewhat subjective). The book is very well-written and has a positive outlook.I have found myself rereading parts, underlining, taking notes -- it is a great resource and has given me some terrific new ideas and insight into how I can better parent my son and encourage him to be the best he can be and live the fullest life he can.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars a superb text!
This book is a strong resource for any clinician dealing with language disorders. It clearly outlines intervention, assessment, different disorders etc.It covers a lot of material, but manages not to feel dense. It also provides tons of ideas for therapy... lists of children's books categorized by what therapy goal addresses (e.g. pronouns)... sample activities etc.Paul does a nice job of summarizing the current research and its implications for the clinician.I honestly don't know how I would have survived my first preschool placement without this book.Whenever I was stumped, this is where I turned. This is the type of book that you never get around to putting back on the shelf for you are always using it. Plus, as an added bonus it reads very well, more like a story than a text.

5-0 out of 5 stars You must read this for clinical practice
This is a must read book, especially for student who have clinical practice. This book covers most of the important aspects in language intervention. Many useful examples are list, so that you can easily apply the knowledge into your real cases!

5-0 out of 5 stars User-friendly guide for beginning clinicians
After repeatedly checking this book out from the library, I bought my own copy.I found the organization of assessment and treatment by age group to be helpful, and the wealth of non-standardized testing methods both appropriate and easy to implement. As the author says, it is designed forthe beginning clinician and provides a worthwhile resource for anyoneworking with children.Though it does provide theoretical discussion, itis primarily a "hands-on" book.I would recommend this book as aprimary text, a supplemental text, or a resource for SLPs who are updatingtheir knowledge and practice in child language. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A practical guide for parents and professionals
Overcoming Autism was given to me by a professional that I work with. She, like myself, has a nephew diagnosed with autism. Her nephew was recently diagnosed at age three and she found this book both personally and professionally helpful.(We are both relatively new to working with children with autism.) I only wish that my family had this book so many years ago when my nephew was diagnosed. Yes, this is an excellent book for parents and professionals. The authors Koegel and LaZebnik discussed many topics that apply to everyday living from toilet training, communication, sleep, finding appropriate school placements and the list can go on and on.I found the authors to be knowledgeable regarding the issues that families face each day when a member has autism. As a member of the Child Study Team I sometimes meet parents who are not knowledgeable with early intervention programs. This book does an excellent job explaining early interventions and the various programs that a child with autism may need to be successful. Each chapter begins with at least a few questions that families frequently ask regarding the issues that they face. Each answer is practical and realistic. In addition, Koegel and LaZebnik give practical suggestions on handling psychological issues such as guilty, denial, blame, anger, etc., as well as guidance and recommendations to getting on track to help your child achieve success. The authors discuss the treatment programs that are available and the research behind those programs. They also stressed to parent to be leery of those programs that cost too much and promise the world.I found the authors to be practical in their approach and the tone of the book supportive and compassionate. They truly offer realistic hope to parents that they can have a rewarding and enjoyable relationship with their child with autism.Overcoming Autism is a practical guide for families and professionals to help children with autism achieve success and find their place in society.Ann Z.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best
I have had this book from the very beginning, even before my son was diagnosed and I have to say, this is the book that helped me to recognize, accept and feel positive about my son having this disorder.I was in denial for awhile about his behavior, thinking it couldn't be autism because he didn't behave like "Rainman".When I picked up this book on a whim, I saw that all people with autism are not the same, do not have all of the symptoms and actually have a hope for a bright future.Dr. Koegel is very human and comforting, but doesn't coddle you.She makes you wish that all the support staff you deal with could have a fraction of her knowledge and compassion-she doesn't ever give up on a child. The book goes back and forth between the Dr. and commentary from a mother, who I can absolutely identify with--she is so very honest.I later found an article in The Autism Perspective Magazine written by her son (now a preteen) and I was so impressed. This is a book that I have passed on to friends with children who may be on the spectrum and also my son's teacher. Please read it!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read answers for parents
I have done a ton of reading on ASDs since my son was diagnosed 2 years ago.I wish I had read this book two years ago!It is full of hope and sound advice based on research.I definitely came away feeling like I could use everyday, no cost experiences to teach my son and enrich his quality of life (which is very different from a lot of books out there that suggest expensive therapies, diets, supplements, etc. are the only way to help your child). The authors mix research with personal accounts which is very helpful.I would strongly recommend this book for any parent, childcare giver or person who is interested in helping a child with an ASD reach their potential. There is HOPE!YOU can make a difference in the life of the child you cherish. The challenges you see today, will not be here forever if you are willing to put in the hard work, perserverance, and most importantly love, needed to help.I would strongly recommend it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What I wish I knew before I got pregnant.
My son was born prematurely June 10, 2004.My 30 week ultrasound came back showing that my ambionic fluid was low and my baby only weighed 2 lbs. 7 ounces. The next day I was sent by my OB/GYN to meet with a perinatologist.Within 15 minutes of meeting the specialist, I was told my baby would be born witihin 24 to 48 hours and was admitted to the hospital 30 minutes later. My son was born via emergency csection 27 hours later.I was 31 weeks into my pregancy. He will spend 9 weeks in neonatal ICU before he can come home. This so far, has been the hardest and most heartbreaking part of my entire pregnancy.5-0 out of 5 stars essential for (expecting) preemie-parents
Upon hearing you're pregnant, most people will only have images of perfect babies. When hearing something is going wrong with your pregnancy, most people have no idea what to expect.5-0 out of 5 stars The book for a high risk pregnancy and the NICU
A very helpful book for reading during your high-risk pregnancy and when your baby is in the NICU.I did think that the anecdotes about women's experiences with terbutaline and magnesium sulfate were unnecessarily alarming. This book complemented Linden's Essential Guide for Parnets of Premature Babies nicely. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Parents Who Suspect Their Child is Dyslexic
This book outlines valuable information that I have not found in other L.D. handbooks (such as the advantages of Omega 3 fish supplements in your child's diet), yet it's a quick read. If one is to buy only one book on L.D./dyslexia, buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Parents of Celiac Kids!!!
Like most parents, we were pretty shell-shocked by my 5 yr old son's diagnosis.I spent hours on the Internet researching Celiac Disease.Problem was, most of the information was geared towards adults. My initial response was less concerned with what he could eat and more concerned with how am I going to make sure he feels "normal"?What will I pack for lunch at school? How can I send him to school without something happening? How will I deal with the 5 birthday parties he has in the next month?Danna Korn's book answered all of those questions and the other 1000 I forgot to think of.This book is a life saver. My son started Kindergarten 3 days ago and I feel like all is well.I read it cover to cover in one night. As parents of celiac kids, we are not alone.Danna Korn helps you see that.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on the Treatment of CP
What an excellent new resource this author has provided us with! This book is very well organized and thoughtfully researched to provide the most updated information and answers to parents most burning questions as well as give ideas and advice to parents and professionals. Most books focus heavily on the difference between normal motor development (some of which children with CP will not be able to achieve) and the motor and muscle abnormalities of children with CP but are usually not as positive as this one. I especially enjoyed the optimism with which this book was written and the guidelines it gave for reaching realistic goals. It was niceto see a discussion of newer treatments such as SDR and ITB Therapies as well. Destined to become a classic work!
