3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Reference Book
"Kids in the syndrome Mix..." is a good reference book, listing disorders and giving tips for parents and teachers that should help them understand the children in the syndrome mix better. However, I feel it lacks in-depth information and details on direct application in the classroom. That might be beyond the scope of the book; therefore, you will have to look for that information elsewhere. In conclusion, the book serves the purpose of a stepping stone for further study - or it can be read as a quick guide, depending on your level of interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read - Lots of Information
This book is useful for so many reasons. It is great for teachers or others who intereact with individuals with a variety of special needs. It is perfect for parents who are trying to narrow down/begain to understand their child's diagnosis. It is perfect for a child who has an Alphabet Soup diagnosis - multiple dx - for one book which address all of them.I would reccomend you read this book!!It is well writen and full of great information

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
Really good information, written concise and easy to read.Great for parents and teachers who do not have a lot of time to read.Chapter 2 is the best chapter I have ever read on how to relate well to children who are often difficult to relate to. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A concerned adult with ADHD
I am an adult with ADHD inatintive type. I have struggled all my life with this condition.Howevere, I have managed to earn a BA in psychology and I am currently working on a masters degree.Because of my expierences in psychology classes I know something about scientific research and empirical evidence. This book was a major dissapointment to me because it lacks thesimple scholary research to prove the claims made by Dr Lawless. I am afraid this book is nothing more then modernday snake-oil that will cause more harm then good.

Concerned Mom,
2-0 out of 5 stars PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING!
There are many great ideas presented in this book about dealing with your add child, BUT the chapter on meds is completely off base.Let me preface the following with MY opinion (I am not an MD or an expert) that children with ADD need a team approach in helping them deal with the condition (if you choose to call it one) and there is a place for meds for many kids, BUT it is only a piece of the puzzle. Parents, teachers, family members, Md's, and behavioral specialists are all crucial. I happen to work indirectly with many of the world thought leaders and experts on ADD (ie. Joseph Beiderman, Mass General Hospital, Boston MA/ Harvard Medical School, ... look up his credentials). First Dr. Frank Lawlis is not an MD, this means he has not been to medical school- that is not to say he isn't a great psychologist, just that he HAS NOT and DOES NOT write prescriptions for these meds and has NO first hand experience with directly managing these meds himself. In this book there are many things that are completely false regarding ADD meds. For example he states that they only work for about 50% of kids.FALSE Let me cite 3 credible sources that disputes this (notice in the book that he does not talk about HIS credible source)

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource for Adult ADHD
As a co-owner of the ADDvisor, we hosted a teleconference featuring Dr. Lenard Adler in May. Dr. Adler was a very engaging speaker and provided many valuable insights into adult ADHD. Dr. Adler's new book, Scattered Minds, highlights both his knowledge about ADHD with writing that is both accessible and readable. This goes for professionals as well as the general public. In understandable terms, Dr. Adler describes the neurobiology of ADHD, the co-existing conditions that often accompany ADHD, medications and complimentary treatments and alternative treatments. 'Scattered Minds' can be used as a reference for questions as they come up or can be read cover-to-cover. Either way, your book shelf will be more valuable as you collect your resources about ADHD.
5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive, clear, and easy to read
This book offers must-know information about ADD in a very clear, concise, and easy-to-read format. I have recently diagnosed with ADD, and this book gave me a very informative introduction to what I am dealing with.

1-0 out of 5 stars Should be illegal
This book caused a lot of pain and suffering in my family because of its extremism. I noticed when I quietly threw it out (thankfully without anybody noticing) that my parents started being kinder and peace (slowly) returned to our household. Its tactics push the envelope of abuse and this dangerous work does not belong in any home that believes in kindness or love. It promotes a "might makes right" view and argues that parents are automatically right because of their age, absolutely. And another thing I'd like to point out is, who ever heard of "ODD"? It sounds to me like just another made-up 'disorder' that is actually just kids being kids. These are quite common and I think Ridley should be imprisoned for this. He is a con artist and his so-called 'mental disorder' is about as real as 'youthful tendency disorder'.

5-0 out of 5 stars sensible and practical suggestions
As an education professional working with parents some of whom struggle with oppositional teenagers, I found the book sane and practical. It acknowledges the possibility of some clinical depression and/or substance abuse issues that would render the strategies ineffective until the other issues are addressed, which some other books do not.It may not be "the answer", but it's a great resource for parents.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not too bad but
I thought some of the ideas in the book were good way of dealing with my son maybe when he hits his teens! But and there is always a but. My son is 8 and with O.D.D you have to always be 2 steps a head of that child when it comes to behaviors and rewards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it early
I love this book.I wish I'd gotten it when my son was little! It provides great information about how to teach kids with DS to read, but also has great stories of real kids and their accomplishments.I'd recommend that anybody with a DS child buy the book early (when their baby is little), and read the first few chapters. It'll inspire them, mitigate some of the worries they have about their child's future, and introduce them to the important concept that although people with DS are generally slower to develop, their learning disabilities can be mitigated by teaching them in a way that is effective for the way they think (e.g., kids with DS are visual learners), rather than the "standard" way.My four year old has actually had better success with the Love and Learning videotapes and books than the flash card approach described in the book, but the principal is pretty much the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must have
it is extremely helpful, in only 2 months my daughter at 6 years old was up to 30 site words without picture cues.(Her first attempt at actually reading) The book contains alot of helpful activities, simply spelled out in step by step directions for anyone to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool to help us raise our children
The ADHD book of list is a great guide to discovering the facts about ADHD and what can be done to work with a child who has been diagnosed with it and help him or her to be successful in life. It is appropriate for parents, counselors, educators and an community member who comes in contact with children and adults with this disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book is HUGE!
I didn't expect this book to be so huge...in size and also in the amount of info.i just received this book today and have skimmed over most of the info in it. i have already found several pages that i will photocopy and give to my child's teacher. the way that the information is presented is easy to follow, easy to locate, and easy to understand. well worth the money and time spent reading it from cover to cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ghost Girl
Jadie is an eight year old elective mute. She does not talk at first but, her teacher Torey helps Jadie to talk. When Jadie does begin to talk she tells Torey disturbing accounts of abuse that she (Jadie) has endured. Is Jadie lying? Is she psychotic, schitozphrenic, or really experiencing these horrible things? Jadie is afraid of spiders. She claims they can spy on her. Jadie believes she is a ghost. She is fascinated with drawing symbols. Torey believes Jadie is a victim of ritualistic abuse (satanism).

4-0 out of 5 stars Ghost Girl
Wow... I can't believe that somebody would do this to a litttle girl. I couldn't put this book down! This was a true story about a eight year oldgirl named Jadie that never spoke at all. She never said a word and wasthey said she was called an elective mute. You find out that she was very badly sexually abused.Torey Hayden, her teacher was a psychologist specialized in elective mutes, which is what Jadie was. This teacher tries to get Jadie to talk to her, and shortly after on the first day she gets Jadie to break her silence. Torey is shocked and could not believe what has been happening to her at home and the abuse she is getting. As Torey gains Jadie's confidence she tries to help her. As the community finds out about this they dont know whether or not to believe her or not. There are three things that they think happened to her.I highly reccomend this book. It is a great book. It makes you greaful for what you have and it makes you sad for what all actually happens out in this world. The beginning is kind of slow but don't let that fool you because this is one of the best books that i have ever read!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ghost Girl; a real heartbreaker
When I first read the review of Ghost Girl on the back of the book, I knew I would be hooked, and I truely was. This novel undoubtedly sucked me in from the very beginig. Jadie, a young and abused child from a strage family never spoke until, almost by the grace of god, a child Psychologist named Torey was sent to save her. This story of emotional physical and sexual abuse really made me see this world is not perfect. For a very long time I have had thoughts of being a child psychologist, like Torey is, and after finishing Jadie's heartwrenching story I was inspired to fulfill my dream. I absolutely love the way Torey felt called to publish her relationship with Jadie for others to read. I didn't want to put Ghost Girl down, and once I did I wanted to pick it back up and read it again.I will definately carry Jadie's story with me for a very long time. I encourage you to experience Ghost Girl, and do the same. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars GROSS!
That is the best title I can think of for this review because that is how disgustingly stupid this book is. I'm amazed that it's apparently been bought by so many, having encountered a confused woman with awful dyed red hair who dances like a nutball on the sidewalk on Wyoming Blvd. in Albuquerque. No offense to you if you read this, just saying how you appeared. This dancer brought up that she had a friend who had an Indigo child, and it was the first time I heard of it. She didn't explain what it was but then I read this book...
1-0 out of 5 stars Skip it
Indigo is another word for ADD or ADHD and, in the end, this book offers NO solutions or assistance of any kind.It is an insulting and ignorant look at what so many families are struggling with and sends the underlying message, "You're doing it all wrong."
1-0 out of 5 stars Insulting and ridiculous
So now we've come up with a "special" label for kids who need some extra effort on our part to raise?

4-0 out of 5 stars What a Help!
While my child is too young to read this book on his own, I know it will be helpful for him in the future. As a parent of a child with sensory issues, I found that it helped enhance my understanding of his issues immensely (e.g, what HE is experiencing on a daily basis and how it might make him feel). The more insight and understanding a parent has on these issues, the better you can help your child. I highly recommend purchasing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun book for kids with SID and extended family members...
We really enjoy this book.It helps our daughter understand what is going on with her senses, and why we need to do heavy work acivities and other parts of her sensory diet.It is also the book we have shown her grandparents because it touches on a lot of definitions related to sensory integration, and gives examples of characters with the traits.I highly recommend you buy this for your child with SID and people who spend a lot of time with your child.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Goodenoughs Get in Sync Review by Lisa Angel
The Goodenoughs Get in Sync by Carol Stock Kranowitz was a great book to read because it so helpful in the classroom. Many times we think that a child is just being mean or annoying when in reality it is a sensory disorder and the child can not help it.I felt the definitions provided to certain words such as sensory under-responsivity, auditory defensiveness and visual defensiveness, to name a few, were extremely enlightning. My son has a friend who has a sensory disorder.I didn't know about the disorder until he came over to spend the night. When it came time to go up the stairs to my son's bedroom he began to freak out.Of course, I called his mom and she explained everything to me and I began to understand. This is a wonderful book to recommend to her.I also enjoyed reading about each family member and how the sensory disorders varied so much. However, each had their own issues to deal with, they really stuck together as a family and supported one another.Even the dog had sensory issues.I would really recommend this book to teachers so that they have better sense of some of the behaviors that go on in the classroom. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed for what I thought I was getting
When I first looked at this book at the bookstore I thought, Great,,my son has ADHD and was looking for a change in his diet to help. However the book just barely skims any one topic with a paragraph or two if you're lucky on anyone subject and has no depth to it at all.If you're just looking for the tip of the iceburg this is it.There is nothing more than an overview to any subject when it comes to amounts, dosages for supplements or nutrients and the amount needed.About half way through I quit reading it since it was of no help other than a broad spectrum overview. The Myth of Learning Disabilities..etc..by Robin Pauc I think, was much better at first glance and actually had dosages for supplements to know where to start and why this or that would help brain function etc.Hope this helps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource
**** I went through this book marking sections to go back over and re-read. Much of the book is geared toward explaining what A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. is, the symptoms, and possible contributing factors. I could not help but wonder WHY? Anyone looking up information on A.D.D. and/or A.D.H.D. already knows what it is. Chances are they have talked, in depth, to their doctor(s) already. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, specific, & optimistic
I agree with the other reviewers that this book is parent-friendly, clear, and hopeful. My baby had seizures for two weeks after he was born and it took a while for me to understand what had happened and what to do next. I read two other books before finding "Seizures and Epilepsy in Childhood," and this one was certainly the best. It is thorough and does a great job of explaining that there are many different kinds of seizure disorders and therefore different types of treatment. It dispels many of the myths out there about seizure disorders and says that many children grow out of it. Neurology has grown leaps and bounds in this field in the past 10-15, and it's important to be up-to-date, since many doctors have differing opinions about how to treat seizures. If you're at all confused (like I was), this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Calmed, reassured, and prepared our family
What an excellent resource! My child had his first non-febrile tonic clonic seizure and I didn't know how to cope with the unexpectedness of a recurrent seizure. This book truly informs and reassures in parent-friendly terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable
This book provided straightforward, invaluable information to our family when faced with our child's seizure disorder. It explains all the medical terms that our neurologist seemed to throw around without explanation (thereby scaring us!).It is optimistic and practical. It spans everything from how to deal with seizures, the pros and cons of different treatment, and how your child can live a full life. Most of all it put us at ease and educated us as to how to proceed with our child's medical treatment. It also helped guide us with what to tell others - the school, babysitters, grandparents.Definitely a must read for parents dealing with a child with seizures! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Brought tears of relief and understanding
Elaine Aron has provided a wonderful book to the parents and caregivers of highly sensitive children.I came across this book in the midst of a rocky transition to preschool for my son.I now feel confident that my frustration and sadness at his suffering can be replaced understanding and support.I have always accepted and loved him deeply for the special person he is but understanding more about how he must feel and how to reassure him makes a world of difference.I have not yet finished the book but already have no hesitation about giving it the highest recommendation. One drawback, book lacks an index which would be nice for quick reference. / Addendum, since reading this book I have developed some additional concerns about my child - wondering if he might be Asperger's or the like.We are in the process of an evaluation as I would like to assist him maneuvering in social settings if this is the case.Regardless this book was helpful.Am now reading "Quirky Kids: Understanding and helping your child who doesn't fit in -When to worry and When Not to Worry" which is a nice discussion of those issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
Bedtimes, transitions, going to school, and many other things have gotten easier for my child after following suggestions in this book. This book is very reassuring and helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book if your child matches the highly sensitive profile
Wow! What a great relief to find a book that so clearly describes my child. It had been scary for me to think that my child was different and to doubt myself - wondering if my parenting was making my child cry more or cling more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Take a Bite
Simple checklists to narrow down a preliminary diagnosis.Answered all my questions and gave some good strategies.

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific solutions guide for helping kids with food aversions and challenging eating behaviors
This book came highly recommended to me by a friend who works with children who have a variety of different special needs. She pointed out that it picks up where a lot of books about eating challenges and "picky eating" behaviors leave off, dealing with the child whose food repertoire may consist of two or three foods; and who may be facing significant physical/behavioral or other challenges that interfere with the process of eating.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book - easy reading
This book was informative, helpful and easy to read.My only wish is that it would have given more helpful ideas on younger kids (2-3).It seemed to have more ideas to help a picky eater of around 4-5 years old.Otherwise great book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
As a clinical psychologist specializing in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorders, I have found this book to be an excellent resource.I recommend it to many families, andto teachers who work with this population. One of the strengths of this book is its articulate examination of the interplay between the cognitive, social and behavioral issues experienced by individuals with Aspergers. The book also suggests a number of intervention strategies that are realistic, practical and helpful for addressing skills deficits and encouraging the potential for individuals with Aspergers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book about academics in the adolescent years ! !
This book focuses specifically on academic issues of children with Asperger's in middle and high school. There are many other books about other aspects of Aspergers, but this is the only good book I have found on this specific topic.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good scheduling advice but little on pragmatics
There is a wealth of advice in this book which all parents and teachers should find helpful.Plenty of checklists are offered and numerous cameo case histories are presented. The references are good but perhaps a bit limited (may be of importance only to researchers - no mention of central coherence deficit for instance). The main point of the book is the get schools to recognise and deal with stress build up in AS pupils before it boils over. Some of this will be familiar from Myles' other book on tantrum management.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get multiple copies!
I just received this book this morning, and I am so excited. This is definitely the best resource I have seen in my 9 years of parenting a child with high-functioning autism! So right on. So practical.Even with the huge array of variations among children with HFA, the workbook does an amazing job of addressing the most common denominators, while drawing out each child's unique characteristics, or even just acknowledging their lack of thatparticular tendency. The workbook pages are an amazing resource to work through with a child to help with self-awareness. I know that my child will enjoy adding his input and creating thisbook about himself, and I know that it will be invaluable in helping him to understand and process the "why and how" of the way he interacts and struggles with life. The pages aimed at parents and educators are excellent, and contain insight I had been missing even after all of the time and work that we have done on this road. I am ordering at least one more copy for his school. The only thing I don't like about it is that it's a bit awkward to have the kid workbook pages interspersed with the sections for teachers/parents. It would have made more sense to put them in separate volumes. However, this in no way detracts from the quality and value of the material in each. Absolutely, buy this book if you are a parent, caregiver or educator of a child with high-functioning autism.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can learn about myself
What a great way for Parents, relatives and teachers alike to help a child or youth with high functioning Autism learn about themselves. The workbook is for the student to write in and work through. Of many topics covered, it also allows the child to highlight the strengths and talents that he/she has, think about and write down the questions they have about their own diagnosis and write out their thoughts on paper. There is also an excellent section on ways of thinking and the all-important use of a schedule.I highly recommend "Asperger's: What Does I Mean to Me?"

5-0 out of 5 stars A "MUST HAVE" for educators and parents of autistic children
I have worked with autistsic children for the past 15 years.Catherine Faherty's workbook provides practical ideas for explaining self-awareness and life lessons for children and young adults with high functioning autism or Asperger's syndrome. It is an excellent resource for teachers and paraprofessionals who work with autistic children in the inclusion model.Examples are clear andworksheets are well organized. This book can also help family and friends understand how autism affects a child's personal development, behavior, relationships, and overall view of the world. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful to learn about attachment
This was one of many books I have been reading regarding attachment. This book had my sons name written all over it.I am a mother of a foreign adopted son with many issues ahead. This has by far been the best one I have found. It showed examples of problems along with a recommended solution to correcting the behavior. We are now seeing some much needed changes in our household.I highly recommend this selection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
Daniel Hughes really understands children with RAD! I especially would recommend this book for parents adopting or doing foster care.

5-0 out of 5 stars highly recommend
We recently adopted a 9 yr old boy. This book helped me understand the source of his behavior and have more compassion. There weren't a lot of methods to help me cope, but I hope his other book will have that.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource!
This is a great book for parents who are struggling with how to help a child with OCD.I give it 4 stars instead of 5 only becausethe author is not critical of her own field's obsession with disorders (DO - "Disorder Obsession": a disorder suffered by many psychologists and all psychiatrists in which the practitioner is obsessed with finding, labeling, and medicating behaviors that depart from their notion of "normal."This disorder can be successfully treated with heavy doses of not taking themselves so darn seriously.)

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for parents of a child with OCD
This book is excellent. I have a 12 year old daughter that was just diagnosed with OCD and I, too, have OCD. This book makes OCD so understandable even to the family members that don't have it. It has really helped me help my daughter. I strongly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good read for parents who have kids with OCD
Author understands how parents can get caught up in the web of OCD she writes with understanding not blaming. Tells how cognitive behavior therapy works in terms that are easy to understand. This is a great book if you are trying to learn about your childs OCD or your own I highly recommend it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I know you hate the drug industry but...
It sounds like many of you have children who have ADD and you chose not to go the medication route.Be careful - and don't forget it is your child not you who has tolive with this - and you should not judge the success of any plan on "if you think he is behaving better" but rather on his/her happiness. This is not about you - it is about your child.I think any child who changes his diet will manifest different behaviors. But ADD is a genetic, neurological disorder - to use the word "onset" and "prevention" of ADD - this is the most demeaning and blaitantly wrong term I have ever heard.Attention Deficit Disorder is caused by an insufficient release and absorbtion of Dopamine. Can a diet affect this - maybe a little - but concerta, ritalin, etc - actually do affect the release of dopamine.I applaud all of you in your research of ADD but be skeptical- of medication and of "Diets".What I do know is that I attend middlebury college and for the first three semes
