5-0 out of 5 stars Tools and information based on the latest research
THE MISLABELED CHILD: HOW UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHILD'S UNIQUE LEARNING STYLE CAN OPEN THE DOOR TO SUCCESS provides parents, teachers and educators a fine, clear guide to children who are different, how diagnoses often fail, and how to look beyond labels to find the basics of a child's problems. Flaws in current methods of evaluation and diagnosis, especially by non-specialists, accompany tools and information based on the latest research along with first-hand accounts by the children themselves.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Eide's empower and inspire - A must own!
Brock and Fernette Eide are knowledgable, compassionate, experienced and speak to their audience in an authentic and easily understood voice. After years of doctor's, therapies, tests, etc - one conversation with them opened up a world of understanding that no other phd or professional could provide. More importantly - they can relate with the children in a positive manner. I've had to educate our school about learning differences. Every educator must read this book. There are so many children going through years of frustration in school that is unnecessary. This book will empower and inspire you.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must read!
In today's world of ADHD escapism, learning disability over-diagnosis and medication-happy classroom environments, The Mislabeled Child is a much needed and called for resource for frazzled and frustrated parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful without being preachy
I found the information in this book very helpful. It is easy to read and understand. It is encouraging. It provides insight into what's going on when you're trying to cast off old ways of living that hold you back.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book really is ground breaking
Having been raised in a home with an alcoholic father and abusive parents in general, I was left in a codependant stuper. At thrity-something and after the birth of a fourth child I found myself in a serious depression I couldn't shake.Having gone through years of counseling and having dealt with much of my past, I was suprised to see it creep up again. This book gave me some powerfully accurate information as well as some great tools for dealing with my situation.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to finally be rid of the old tapes in their head.

5-0 out of 5 stars It certainly is a choice
Don't let the title fool you.Although this is a book about dealing with failed adult relationships, the main emphasis in on the phenomena of co-dependency.Unresolved issues of childhood are the primary cause, and Drs Hemfelt, Minnerth and Meier go through many real life case studies that lead the reader to examine their own life, as well as the life of thier "significant other".Realizing how your lowly filled "love tank" is affecting your life is a powerful tool for recovery.Realizing you have a loving heavenly father is a key to recovery as well.I think this book is excellent for anybody experiencing a significant problem with a marriage or other long term relationship. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids
My granddaughter loved the explanations about autism in this book. She is 9, and it is written where she can understand more about the behaviors of her brother with autism. She was even going to take it to school for her teacher to read, and some of her classmates. Many adults would benefit from reading it also.

5-0 out of 5 stars MARCHING TO YOUR OWN DRUMMER
This is an excellent teaching tool that paves the way towards acceptance of persons who display autistic behavior.Autism and its related neurobiological condition, Asperger's are spectrum conditions.Common spectrum behaviors include a myriad of sensory issues such as strong aversions for loud noises; strong reactions to certain smells and tastes and distinctive speaking styles. Many spectrum behaviors overlap and Asperger's, while considered at the higher end of the autism spectrum does indeed share common neuro-sensory ground with autism.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful book
As a teacher I found that this book had many fun and functional activities.I do wish this book had more activities for older (teenage) students with moderate to severe disabilities; but, a great book overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book for Sensory Integration out there!!
I *LOVED* this book.It was such a quick read that I got through it in two days, *with* two kids underfoot, but there certainly was no lack in valuable content to read. This has transformed the way that I understand and work with my daughter, and she has had a diagnosis for sensory integration disorder for years!I reccommend this to *any* parent, even those without sensory kids....

5-0 out of 5 stars Best resource for activities I've found!
I found this book very helpful for use in my field as a social worker who works with children and adolescents, not just with sensory issues, but across a wide spectrum of issues. This book offers MANY activities targeting children of all ages and with diverse interests, and I have also found it helpful to recommend to parents as options for activities to entertain their kids with! ... Editorial Review

Flexibility and tolerance are learned skills, as any parent knows if they've seen an irascible 2-year-old grow into a pleasant, thoughtful, and considerate older child. Unfortunately, for reasons that are poorly understood, a few children don't "get" this part of socialization. Years after toddler tantrums should have become an unpleasant memory, a few unlucky parents find themselves battling with sudden, inexplicable, disturbingly violent rages--along with crushing guilt about what they "did wrong." Medical experts haven't helped much: the flurry of acronyms and labels (Tourette's, ADHD, ADD, etc.) seems to proffer new discoveries about the causes of such explosions, when in fact the only new development isalternative vocabulary to describe the effects. Ross Greene, a pediatricpsychologist who also teaches at Harvard Medical School, makes a bold and humane attempt in this book to cut through the blather and speak directly to the (usually desperate) parents of explosive children. His text is long and serious, and has the advantage of covering an enormous amount of ground with nuance, detail, and sympathy, but also perhaps the disadvantage that only those parents who are not chronically tired and time-deprived are likely to get through the entire book. Quoted dialogue from actual sessions with parents and children is interspersed with analysis that is always oriented toward understanding the origins of "meltdowns" and developing workable strategies for avoidance. Although pharmacological treatment is not the book's focus, there is a chapter on drug therapies. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read if you work w/ a difficult child
This well-organized, brilliantly thought-out book gives educators and parents a completely different way of thinking about how we lead all children but particularly difficult, abused, angry children. In short order it provides specific tools together with examples of what we can do to create a more peaceful, flexible child who can function successfully in the world and get along with others. The corresponding web site is extremely valuable in conjunction w/ this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Results-when nothing else has worked!
Thank you Dr. Greene, as reading this book has been more helpful to helping me understand my daughter, and has given us more tangible results than any other medication or therapy that we have tried. Things are not completely normal, but after instituting the behavior plan, they are MUCH BETTER. Every child is different, but in our specific case, the information that Dr. Greene presents makes so much sense, and his basket approach has really helped us avoid rages. This is a must read for parents of children diagnosed with Reactive Attachment disorder, Bipolar, ODD, or ADHD. I highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Explosive Child? The Real Solution May Surprise You!
Frustrated by my son's age-inappropriate temper tantrums, I desperately searched for solutions. [He'd be set off by little things like making a mistake coloring and would rage for 1/2 hour or more ... still at age 6! Maybe this is understandable for a 2 year old, but there was something wrong here...] I approached it psychologically, certain that I somehow wasn't handling him properly. However, he just seemed out of control. No matter how I approached his anger, I couldn't make any significant changes. I purchased this book, but it didn't help me much, as I'd already tried so many behavioral approaches. I finally researched the Feingold Program (you can Google it) after observing that his biggest tantrums came immediately after eating foods with red food coloring. The Feingold Program primarily removes artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives from children's food and environment (yes, even those hand-stamps after gym class can have an effect!), and it's been around since the '70s. A family friend used it successfully for her 2 boys during that time, so I knew at least one success story. I bought the materials and dove in. Guess what -- no more tantrums! My boy is a changed person, and I couldn't be happier. Please give this diet a try -- you may be amazed! It's a bit more work for me when shopping or cooking, but my life is so much easier in every other way because I'm not dealing with a raging kid all the time. He and his little sister (who's 3 and is also on the diet now; she doesn't seem as sensitive as he is, but she definitely benefits also) now play nicely most of the time, freeing up hours of my day. I truly believe that the question is NOT "Will this help my child?" ... the question is "How much will this help my child?" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book was recommended to me by my son's Doctor. It is very detailed and informative. It is a great choice to learn more about ADHD. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Complete and Solid Parents' Guide
As a fully licensed clinical psychologist and the author of Parenting Kids with ADD/ADHD: Real Tools for Real Life I feel uniquely qualified to say that Dr. Barkley's book is the MOST complete ADHD-related parenting book in print today. It offers a complete review of the scientific literature related to ADHD, and describes scientifically supported treatments. This volume could be improved by being more user friendly, and somewhat less dense (goals I attempted to meet in my own volume mentioned above).
3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, thought provoking, but utterly cold and empathy-free
I came to this book as a skeptic, and as someone who wants nothing to do with the meds. I had avoided reading Barkley because I knew him to be a big drug guy.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on NVLD
I have read multiple books on NVLD and highly recommend this book over all of the books as it contains a wide range of data and explains relevant test scores in great detail. She provides excellent information on diagnosing NVLD, coping with NVLD at home and IEP suggestions for the school. Sue Thompson is the guru of NVLD.I also highly recommend both of Pamela Tanguay's (sp?) books on dealing with NVLD at school and at home.If you only purchase one book, Sue Thompson's is the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars REPRINT THIS BOOK, SOMEONE !!
Although I agree that some of the adult 'outcome' examples are scary, such gives us all the more impetus to help kids w/NLD and to spread the word at any stage; this user-friendly source book is the definitive intro for parents and school-folk (followed then by P.Tanguay's pair of books: NLD at Home, and NLD at School). The base of the front cover states the previous title which (if you're a parent or friend of someone with NLD) rings SO TRUE: "I Shouldn't Have to TELL You..."Well, yes, we do -- and yes, we do need this book back in circulation, maybe with some updating.I've special-ordered multiple copies for others and it's getting mighty expensive -- but worth it."

4-0 out of 5 stars almost perfect but....
This book is considered the definitive work for parents of NLDer's. I'll admit it's very good but it does have some flaws. I want to start by saying that I was diagnosed with mild NLD at the age of 18.This affects my view of the book in that it really isn't that useful for high school and beyond. Her CAMS don't mix with a university setting and the adults she profiles have depressing lives.Thompson's example of a college student bothers me because she is portrayed as being unable to attend anything but a "local junior college". I also agree with the reviewer who said that Thompson spends to much time focousing on extreme cases, not everyone with NLD needs such intense interventions. Some of the examples are really worst case scenarios. Another thing that I'd like to point out is that not all NLDer's have problems with reading comprehension. I'm an English lit major with no reading problems and have read of other NLD individuals who don't have this kind of difficulty. Finally, typing isn't the magic solution she says it is- the same deficits that make writing difficult can affect typing ability.Good starter book but don't assume your child is going to be that bad. I wish she would expand on this book with something not geared towards just young children. ... Read more

What is the meantime? According to author and inspirational speaker Iyanla Vanzant, being in the "meantime" means being in a state of limbo. "Whenyou are not happy where you are and you are not quite sure if you want toleave or how to leave, you are in the meantime," she explains. Rather thanwallow in confusion, Vanzant encourages you to use the meantime as anopportunity to prepare yourself for true love. The first order of business isto clean house, starting with the basement--the place in the psyche where youstore your most destructive thoughts. Room by room, Vanzant takes youthrough a metaphorical cleaning of the soul. This way, when your meantimedays are over and love finally comes knocking on the front door, you'll have aclean house to welcome love into. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
Iyanla is very personable. She really makes you stop and think that we are not crazy or wrong, we all just need to believe and trust in ourselves.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written and an even poorer message
My wife and I have been married 11 years, things have been better between us. We both went out and bought books to help with the relationship (or so I thought). After reading the book my wife explained that we should "wait and see". I, at the same time, read the 7 Principles of Marriage. My take was, our relationship is bent not broken, let's try to fix it together. After reading half of "in the meantime" I see where she got her opinion of "action". You have two choices from the book: 1. Do nothing until "inspiration" hits 2. Throw away everything and start over.Either way the book gives no other options or practical examples to move ahead together in a positive way. Don't waste your time and hope to God that your significant other doesn't get a hold of this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Iyanla Vanzant helps you get to the core of life
Iyanla Vanzant speaks mostly about the importance of "living in the now", something we all know but are too busy to practice. She does a nice job too of comparing the Western style of "Doing" as opposed to the Eastern style of "Being." Linking the two cultural aspects could not have been an easy task, and I applaud Ms. Vanznant for having the courage to reach into a women's soul, and to draw out the ugliness that lives there.

I found this book to be very helpful to give to my son's teachers before each school year.It answers many important questions, and is a great starting point for newer teachers or those who aren't very familiar with autistic spectrum disorders. It's very readable, and since teachers are so busy, they appreciate that it is short and to the point. This book has been helpful to my son's teachers, and therefore has helped my son. I am buying my third copy today to donate to the school.

Kathleen Nadeau is widely respected in the medical community for her knowledge and down to earth strategies for those with ADD/ADHD. The professional organizer, Judith Kolberg, has broken down everyday problems that everyone faces into easy step by step plans. If your child truly deals with ADHD in combination with any other conditions (RAD, OCD, etc), this is NOT the book for you.The author clearly deals with children with a singular diagnosis.
5-0 out of 5 stars With the right support, children and adults with ADHD can control their symptoms and lead happy and fulfilled lives.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most feared and misunderstood of all medical conditions. Despite over 200 scientific papers being published on this neurological condition every year, it remains stigmatised and controversial. Some doctors don't even believe it exists. Yet it is estimated that as many as 13-15% of the childhood population, and over four million adults are affected by ADHD. These people are often described as stupid, lazy, disorganized, wild, out of control or woozy on drugs. But the reality is altogether more complex, and deeply moving. Lara Webb, as many scientists believe that people with ADHD behave the way they do because they have key differences in the frontal lobes of their brains--the part that plays an important role in the way that we control our impulses. People with ADHD have difficulty suppressing their impulses and therefore respond to more cues than the average person. Rather than failing to pay attention, they pay attention to everything. This means they're often overloaded with information they cannot filter out. These people are unable to stop and think about a situation, to 'apply the brakes' and consider the consequences before they act.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great read for anyone who has a child with adhd
I found this book to be so refreshing.Infact I can say that out of all the books I've read on this topic (which is alot) this one was most helpful. It takes all of the characteristics of the adhd child and teaches you how to both embrace them and appreciate them, in turn it helps you to reinforce to your child that they are indeed different but very, very lucky to have this incredible personality.Once you truly start to believe in your child and love their madness for what it is, creative energy, you will stop being stressed out and worried about the future and start loving the present.Life isn't always perfect but it is an adventure when you are lucky enough to have a child with this special gift.If you're child has adhd please read this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for parents
A good book for parents. In the social skills intervention we developed, I recommend a range of books for parents based on their accessibility and general sensitivity to parents needs. This book is one of the ones in that basket - there aren't many. I would also recommend reading Succeeding with Interventions for Asperger Syndrome Adolescents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and informative!
This book is practical and helpful. I have learned more about the areas I need to be targeting with my son. It has also increased my awareness of more of the things my son faces on a daily basis and how to approach them better.
4-0 out of 5 stars very complete reference
Offers a good background of asperger response to the real world and also gives a number of suggestions on how to support the person and or make their world more liveable. The suggestions are able to be done by family and school. Most of them do not require any special techniques or equipment, just an understanding of AS and the people if affects. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Pernicious
I'll say it right now - this review is not going to win me any friends. But, I feel this book has the potential to influence people in a negative way, so I'm going to list my concerns.
5-0 out of 5 stars One Child
This is the 1st book I've read of Torey Hayden, I enjoyed it very much and would suggest it to friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars i loved it but it was sad
I Loved this book. Torey Hayden is one of the best authors that writes about her own experiences working with special needs or difficult children. This child in the book, Shiela, comes from a neglectful background. She doesn't speak. But Torey works her magic, as well as uses as much tlc and patience with her as she can. It is a great book, but it is sad because you read what this young child has to go through in her young life. Torey also has other books out there too that are about her expereices and learning journeys. There is a followup to this story about Sheila, it is called The Tiger's Child . Both are really good.

5-0 out of 5 stars No-nonsense, practical guide.
10 Simple Solutions To Adult ADD: How To Overcome Chronic Distraction & Accomplish Your Goals by Stephanie Moulton Sarkis, Ph. D. (Adjunct Assistant Professor of Counselor Education at the University of Florida) is a solid self-help guide to developing lifestyle patterns to offset the disadvantages for attention-deficit disorder in adults. The techniques to improve concentration and memory, manage money and time better, and raise self-confidence, while especially invaluable to adults with ADD, are also quite useful for lay readers of all backgrounds. From the "Five Box" method for sorting one's possessions (fix it, give it away, keep it, don't know, and garbage) to the value of using alarms in wristwatches to keep track of time (especially while on the computer) to using a seven-day pill container to ensure one takes the correct dosage of one's medication over the course of a week, the advice in 10 Simple Solutions To Adult ADD is invaluable. Additional tips for diplomatically disclosing that one has ADD, picking up nonverbal cues in social situations and much more round out this no-nonsense, practical guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome resource
Recently diagnosed with ADD I've been battling at work for accommodations. My doctor/therapist provided me a document for accommodations just this week.It took the harrassment from a supervisor away.I went to HR and let her know that the Department Manager has been very good about this, letting me know what he expects.I mentioned that I had read in the book about the need for organizers and I would have purchased a Palm today, but the store was out.She got up, pulled out a box and there was a Palm. She indicated that this could be used as an accommodation.I asked if I found the reference if that would be enough and it was agreed.I went back to my desk, and turned to the right page, took it back to her, and she's putting in a request to have it installed on my computer at the office and it's now an accommodation.I've followed the advice in the book about using "to do" lists, and it has really helped to keep me focused just on what I need to do.I highly recommend the book, as well as Sari Solden's "Women with ADD"

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs updating
While reading some of the previous reviews, I saw one that mentioned "contemporary science" - written in 1999. The first Amazon.com customer review for this book is from 1997. If I'd read it then, I would have rated it higher. But a book that deals with anything medical needs to be updated long before it's a decade old, which this one now is. The chapter on medication is completely outdated; it shouldn't be referred to by anyone who wants to know what options are available now. And while all the scientific/medical questions about ADD/ADHD haven't been answered, more is known now than when this book was written.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to help your child on speech problems
This is a great resource for parents who are trying to figure out if their children have some sort of language problem. The author does an excellent job by naming every different problem and defining very clearly each concept. It is also good to find resources to help your child in case you do not have insurance that can cover your child's speech therapy. The cases presented are also very good since some of them can apply to your real life situation. If you are looking for a great tool to confirm language issues, you have it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great info and very easy to read!
I found this book to be an excellent and comprehensive guide. My daughter has a speech and language problem, but until reading this book I didn't realize how her listening problems were related. I showed the book to her teacher and we able to get an audiologist who could diagnose her auditory processing problem. Now she is getting the right help, and I will be eternally grateful to this author for writing this fabulous book. I wish I had read this when she was younger because perhaps I would have known what to look for. The symptoms are subtle in the younger child and become a little more obvious once they are trying to function in a classroom. I highly recommend this book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS BOOK!!!!
I couldn't disagree more with the previous review. I found this book to be totally reassuring. In fact, over and over it tells the parent it is not your fault. It lists ways you can help your child, but doesn't ever say you caused the problem.I have a 6 year old son with a speech and language problem, including apraxia at one time. There IS information about it in the 2001 edition. I wonder if she has the most recent edition? I found the book to be easy to read and understand. It was much more helpful than the other books I have read or purchased on this topic. It was recommended to me by my sister, who is the head of a major pediatric speech pathology clinic. She said it was technically the most accurate book on the topic out there. ... Read more
