5-0 out of 5 stars This book has changed my life!
The exercises in this book have definitely changed my life.I can remember better, focus better, and organize better.Although this book is geared toward helping children, I am over 40, and these exercises worked for me.I was diagnosed with ADD just a few years ago. This book is well-written, well organized, and very genuine in voice.I fully recommend this book to anyone who shows signs of this STNR reflex still bothering them.I believe this is a breakthrough in ADD and ADHD treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, A book that I think reveals a drug free solution to hyper active people.
Dr. Miriam Bender should be applauded for her tireless research in revealing a misunderstood subject/label "ADHD". I have completely read this book and have started using the exercises with my child with positive results so far. The author, Nancy E. O'Dell organizes and addresses the subject very clearly so any layman can completely understand. If you have a child with hyper activity and are sincerely looking to rid your child of medication, it is in my opinion that you should study this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars LIFE CHANGING BOOK!
After many therapies, medications, and exercises, we have finally found the underlying cause of our son's ADHD.This book clearly explains what some children miss in their early development. Then it shows you detailed exercises that can cure the problem, not just treat the symptoms!Although the exercises require a commitment, we saw results after only one week!At the end of the 8 month program, we had a "normal" child who was able to focus, sit still, and function completely typical for his age without medication!WONDERFUL! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very complete presentation
I am the parent of an autistic adult daughter. This manual is written for the parent and the professional and offers much insight into early intervention. The almost 400 pages cover an extensive scope of information and suggestions devoted to teaching, motivating, programming, developing, assessing, tracking, measuring, resourcing, teaching skills, sleeping and eating disorders, and much much more. There is a wealth of information written here in an easy-to-understand presentation. I would highly recommend this manual for anyone interested in learning more.

5-0 out of 5 stars An overview of Applied Behavioral Analysis
This book provides a comparison, in its introduction, of ABA to other interventions for autism. The comparison focuses on one of the strengths of ABA being that this approach is defended by much research. The book provides an overview of its curriculum (beginning, intermediate, and advanced) and programs that are typically implented in an ABA program. It is helpful for gaining an understanding of what ABA is.It is also a useful guide for implementation of an ABA program as well as for writing IEP goals and objectives.

4-0 out of 5 stars makes you feel better
There wasn't anything that I thought was revolutionary here, but since I tend to get really stressed when my son doesn't eat (especially since he's pretty slim) this book helped and continues to help me relax some about it.I understand that my pushing food on him is a bad tactic in the long run. So, I'm glad I have it. Two unique things: a focus on our own "food legacy" that for some may ring true but for me was just not really an issue (I didn't have overly involved parents pushing or preventing my food habits) and two-a stronger focus on OVEReaters (reasonable in this era of obesity but far from my area of concern).
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book that really helps
Finally a book that really addresses the needs and wants of both parents and children. As a mother of four, I am finally able to help each one of my children develop their own eating styles that will enable them to have a healthy lifestyle.Thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved me and my child!
"I was constantly running after my 2 year old with food; that's how worried I was that he was too thin.Even though my doctor said not to worry, I always left the office wondering what to do, and how to stop worrying; this book saved me from becoming a nervous wreck and from creating more problems!" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Medication for different diagnostic
The most important about this book is that specified the medication for the specific diagnosis, also give you all the information about it and what other symptons can you see with your primary diagnostic, to know if the kid need an extra medication or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parent or Doctor, You Should Own This!
I have two children. My son has Childhood Onset Bipolar Disorder and ADD.My daughter has COBP, ADD and Anxiety Disorder.Having both the previous edition and this edition on my bookshelf has made my life so much easier in helping me and my children's psychologist manage my children's medication.I have felt so much better when I can come home from an office visit and look up medication and see all the potential side effects even though I also look at the pharmacutical information which comes with the medication, this book makes it much easier to understand for anyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Presents plain-terms need-to-know facts for parents
Written by a specialist in pediatric and adult psychopharmacology, Straight Talk About Psychiatric Medications For Kids is now in a newly revised edition with information on latest advances in treating specific disorders, tips on saving money on perscriptions, recent changes in legislative and health care affecting children's treatment, and more. 5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for parents of dyslexic children
I strongly recommend this book to parents of dyslexic children and educators.I only wish that I had the information from this book when my son started school 13 years ago.Since this book is written by a professional with dyslexia who has experienced what our dyslexic children experience 24/7, it is more credible. As an educator, I will certainly recommend this book to parents of my dyslexic students!

5-0 out of 5 stars A refreshingly candid look at living and succeeding with dyslexia.
I have to admit that when I first picked up this book, I was a little put off by the title. I thought maybe this was going to be another one of those books about the "mystique" of dyslexia.I was delighted to find a candid account of how dyslexia affects all aspects of a person's life.Dr Frank's honesty about his own struggles with dyslexia was refreshing.I had to laugh aloud when I read that "if this (dyslexia) is a gift, I'd send mine back." I have a dyslexic husband and son and am well aware of the day-to-day struggles they face with word recall, mental "blurriness," memory blocks, and the fear of embarrassment and failure. This is a wonderful book for those who live or work with dyslexic individuals; it allows you to see the world from their perspective.Dr Frank is honest about the challenges of dyslexia, but also highly encouraging. He gives practical strategies for forming your support team, compensating, and forging ahead despite the challenges and fears that dyslexic individuals face. This book is probably the most balanced that I have read about dyslexia.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Secret Life of the Dyslexic Child
This is without question the best book I have ever read regarding dyslexia. I have been researching and reading on the topic for 8 years and not one book has brought me to my knees like this one did.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough but overenthusiastic
In this book, Luke Jackson explores the effect of the gluten free/casein free (GF/CF) diet on himself and his family and gives practical advice for how to apply it in everyday life. The long appendices (they take up half the book) by his mother, Jacqui Jackson, describe GF/CF recipes, parental notes on implementing the diet, and other resources related to the diet.5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant, informative book
I am the grandmother of a wonderful 6-year-old boy who has been diagnosed autistic, and I've read both Luke Jackson's books (written at ages 12 and 13) in order to get a more complete understanding of the condition from a "kids eye view".I can only hope that Luke keeps writing for the masses.5-0 out of 5 stars Hearing child's perspective was a great help
My son, 6-yr-old with autism, has been on this diet for over 2 years, and I just read this book. It was very interesting reading the perspective of a child on the diet. I am now even more motivated to keep my son on the GF/CF diet. If you're thinking of starting it, this book will settle some of your concerns about implementing it, such as how your child will adjust, whether they really will start eating what you cook, what to do when other family members are not on the diet, etc.The author is also not the only child in his family who is GF/CF; he has two brothers on the diet as well and describes their experiences with it.Read more

This is a great motivational book for someone on the verge of entering into adulthood.Dr. Baker pinpoints specific skills needed for a variety of "life situations" by catagorizing them and dealing with them individually. It starts out with mapping out assets and challenges. There are activity pages to use when anger is an issue and suggestions on calming ones self. The book includes a 16 page section on dating. It offers great advice for job seekers, from writing resumes to handling rejection. These are only a few of the sections found in this book.It truly is indispensable for anyone with Autism or Asperger's Syndrome.I definitely recommend this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best one out there!
After reading almost all the ADD books out there, I turned to this one.I admit that many times I find Dr Sears to be a bit too permissible and touchy-feely.I was very surpised and pleased with this book! His approach to ADD as being more of an issue of trying to fit children into "one-size-fits-all" places in the classroom makes sense. After reading this book I felt that my children are just less mature and developed in some areas of their development.I felt that I could address their problems, and he offers many different approaches.Read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the newest ADHD approaches
Of the many, many books I have read on ADD, this is by far my favorite. If you want to be educated on the topic for your child's best interest, this is the best place to start. There is no pressure to feel you should be giving your child Ritalin. There are so many positive alternatives and approaches that work. For example it really explains neurofeedback, which does work, I have been using this approach for my daughter with excellent results, no drugs!! It has become my significant bedtime reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neurotherapy works
I didn't find this book until my son was a junior in high school. He was not a behavior problem and his IQ was above average but he just had trouble with listening and focusing. He was nearly failing all his classes at the time and was very upset because he truly wanted to do well.Ireviewed the neurotherapy section of the book and decided to give it a try.He did the sessions over the summer and it made all the difference in school. He had good grades his senior year and now has a full academic scholarship in college. He is happy and proud of himself. This book helped me understand him better and gave me options. This book helped me help him.I highly recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If behavior is an issue, this book is for you!
This book was so helpful in understanding behavioral issues better. As a teacher at a main stream elementary school, I encounter children with milder forms of Autism on a daily basis.I just have thought in the past that their disobedience was blatant. However, through the reading of this book, I have learned that bad behavior many times is a result of their communication and sensory issues.Something as simple as communicating to them in a way that is simple for them to understand and not speaking to them figuratively or giving many commands at once, can avoid an episode of bad behavior. If I can make sure that whatever activities we do are mapped out for the day and that "surprises" on a regular basis do not occur, then we can avoid unnecessary trauma or stress. There are so many useful tips offered that have been tried and proven. If you or someone you know, work with an individual with autism, you definitely need to read this book.It truly is an indispensable source.

This was one of the first books that I read after discovering that my daughter had ADHD and also LD.I found Dr. Silver's book very thorough and very readable.I particularly liked and appreciated the chapter on dealing with ADHD in the family. So many of the other books seem to focus solely on school and homework issues when ADHD effects all aspects of a child's life.3-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to follow
I bought Dr. Silver's book on the recommendation of my daughter's pediatrician.I found it to be quite detailed and well-researched, but it was excruciatingly dry and clinical.I am usually a voracious reader, but I had trouble getting through this book. It's an important reference book if you are doing detailed research, but it's probably not the first book you should tackle after you learn your child has ADD.In my opinion, a better "first book" would be "Driven to Distraction" by Edward Hallowell et al. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Should probably be required reading for potential parents

5-0 out of 5 stars as a sibling
As a sibling of a child with special needs, You Will Dream New Dreams helped me evaluate the dreams I have had for my brother in the past, and how I should change them for the future. It also helped me better understand my parents, and how they have coped with having a child with a special need.
4-0 out of 5 stars New appreciation for fellow parents
My very pro-life girlfriend sent me this book as a gift the week I was due to go in for invasive testing to find out if I would be in these parents' shoes. She meant it well but it was poor and inappropriate timing. Once I had my test results, which said my baby was 'normal', I then read the book and learned a lot. I'll give you the perspective from a parent who has never had extra challenges to raising my children.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good info, but not the whole story...
The most helpful information provided in this book might be summarized in one sentence: Eating a healthy diet will help your family in many ways, and supplements can be helpful as well. Those supplements--more familiarly known as omega-3 fatty acids, the EPA and DHA of other nutrition-oriented books--have largely been lost in today's typical American diet.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for ADDers
This is an excellent book. The basic idea of the book is that there is link between lack of Omega-3 in the diets of people with ADD and other differences. The book offers research to help proove this theory. It also offers a suggestions on how to add omega-3 to our diets.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you don't get this book...
Is it possible to rate a book higher than 5 stars? When I first read this book, my first reaction was anger. I was mad, because I had never heard of most of the information in this book. This stuff SHOULD be in the public domain. Why hasn't the media reported on any of these studies? Then I thought about it. If this stuff really does work, many companies stand to lose significant billions of dollars in revenue from the sale of ritalin and aderall.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reference
This book is an excellent intermediate reference to follow reading Sensory Secrets...How to jump-start learning in children.5-0 out of 5 stars Important
Every social worker should read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars What is Sensory Integration?
This book explains very clearly the problem of sensory integration dysfunction. It examines the cause, and the scope of the problem, and also treatment. It clearly states that this problem can occurdespite aparent's proper nurturing of a child's development. Most encouraging, thisbook explains the therapy that can help the child (or adult). However, itis written by a PhD, and so is rather difficult to understand at times.Italso covers a huge scope of learning disability, from slight dysfunction toautism. ...
