Like the previous reviewer, I had not spent a lot of time reading about how to interact with and care for my new baby -- until I picked up this book.I like the author's straightforward descriptions of what to expect when in the hospital and home from the hospital for the first few days and weeks.Dr. Paula walks the reader through a number of issues including feeding, bathing, sleeping and making the transition back to work after the baby is born. The text is interspersed with web site addresses if you need more information on a subject. Finally, the thing I like best about this book is that it is not overly negative in tone like some of the other parenting books I have read.As a first time mom, I consider this an invaluable reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Closed The Gap
Even when your teen see's you with the book he stated we are close why havea book like that?Well even if you think you are close its a great talking point to start healing and gaps you had the questions perfect evn for your teens closest friends. Its been a wonderful experience getting to know him a whole lot better and them knowing their parents a whole lot better. Thank you Jay with Love

5-0 out of 5 stars closing future gaps
The bad news is that for myself and my own teenagers this book came a little late...about 10 years. The good news is that for my now adult children and my soon to be 8 grandchildren you can never start to early to prepare yourself and your kids for those teenage years.I bought 5 copies of Closing the Gap.I originally bought one to give to my younger brother who's daughter is in the midst of teenage years-15.He started asking me what I had done when my kids were going through the insanity.I was flattered he valued my opinion until I gave it and he said "Thanks, now at least I know what not to do."I took it as a joke, but truth be told, I had made a mistake or 12.I bought him the book so he would have a clue of what was the 'right' thing to do.I didn't intend to read it(teenagers???been there, done that, don't want to go back), but picked it up one night out of boredom, expecting to get a laugh or two out of some old memories and a chuckle over my brothers reactions to what I thought would be the 'experts' advice.I did get a chuckle, but I also got a surprise...I wished I could of had that book way before my kids became teens. 1-0 out of 5 stars Rubbish
Jay McGraw is obviously just trying to ride his father's coat tails, unfortunately, he possesses none of the talent or skill his father does.If you want to read a patronizing, annoying account of teen life, this is the book for you! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful San Francisco Bay Area Long Term Care Guide
This is a very useful, objective resource guide for finding the best in long term care (LTC) options in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area (apparently the East Bay has a separate guide and I believe the Guide is expanding to other cities, as well). The guide is a comprehensive overview of all of the local LTC services and facilities; chapter One describes the various functions of home care, geriatric care management, adult day care, assisted living facilities, continuing care communities, skilled nursing facilities and hospice, specifying what each does and what to expect.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiring, thorough name guide
This is the best book of African American names I found, after reviewing quite a few.Lots of the others limit themselves to African names, and while I can see their usefulness I was also interested in unusual, created names. This book is unique because it includes only the names of actual African Americans who filled out questionnaires in person or on the internet. It includes unusual, unique, and created names alongside traditional African and European names, with a definition and country of origin listed for every name from Swahili to Scottish. There are also lots of boxes in the text describing historical or famous people who shared the name.Overall I think this is the best Afican American name book out there and I look forward to a second edition incorporating the new names that people are sure to send the author!

4-0 out of 5 stars A lovely personal history of names
This unique book is best appreciated as an informal cultural history rather than a what-to-name-your-baby guide. Each name in the book is linked to at least one real individual, giving the book a personal "oral history" feeling. As a practical name guide...well, the author is a bit too loving and celebretory toward her subjects to serve as a guide. She's hesitant to categorize anything, and a little over-eager to find African origins for invented names.(Come on, not *everything* is a form of Aisha!)But that doesn't detract from the book's core strengths and the warmth that pervades every page.Great for inspirational browsing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Timing
What a great time for this book. Parents are constantly trying to come up with unique names for their newborns. This is the perfect "baby shower" gift. Like the title says, it's complete and offers some truly differentalternatives as well as traditional names to parents-to-be. It is the kindof book that will remain in families and be passed on to their newlywedcouples. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Profile your sexual personality and kick-start your sex life
My immediate reaction to a book entitled "Can You Pass the Sex Test?" is to respond, "No," and then go ahead and see how badly I fail. Anne Hooper asks 150 questions designed to pinpoint your sexual strengths and weaknesses. After measuring your motivation, sensuality, and the all-important goal of satisfaction, Hooper provides advice on how to brush up your knowledge and technique along with tips on relaxation and role playing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hit of the Party!
I was having a Birthday get-together for my husband with some of our closest coupled friends and family and showed the book to one girlfriend. Not only did she like it and request it, everyone else did also... ( I mean EVERYONE, men and women). So now I am about to buy like 5 or 6 copies for the other couples and am planning a book party to take the test as couples and discuss.I shows many different positions only as entertainment, not as instruction. It gives good advice that a lot of couples would find easier to share with each other this way (book discussion). The pictures only give book some spice!Great Book!A must have for every couple...even just for fun!

This book is a wonderful addition to have if you have younger children and younger visitors and need a way to "keep them occupied"!Buy this book. It is very well put together! It is also worth every cent. The only thing it doesnt have that I would give it 5 stars is a CD ROM directory for the electronic version...otherwise go for it if you dont mind typing in the sites yourself!

3-0 out of 5 stars We All Wish....
Millman doesn't believe "the perfect sister" exists, although she does describe a few who come very close.I found this book a curious mix of discussions about types of sisters (The Outsider Sister, The Wishful Sister)and lengthy biographies of families, rather than siblings.I wanted to read more about the sisters and less about the mothers and fathers who created them because, as the author admits, "sisters play a huge role in our childhood and identities."

5-0 out of 5 stars Considers what makes adult sisters close
Sisters are a complicated relationship: though they may grow up together, their personalities and perspectives may be totally different. Author Marcia Millman spent hundreds of hours interviewing sisters to examine how their bonds were formed and how they changed throughout life: Perfect Sister considers what makes adult sisters close - or not - and how sister sibling bonds and rifts form. ... If you don't own a book like this then buy it. If you've EVER read one of these type books then forget it. It's the same thing you read in every other "preparedness" book. I'm sure this was the HOT seller Dec. 31, 1999, but now? 5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable reference for September 11 and other emergencies
I first borrowed this book from the library and found it so useful I bought it from Amazon. I live in the Washington, D.C. area and felt very unprepared for emergencies in the aftermath of September 11. This guide helps you create a family emergency planand give you tips on keeping safe in more routine situations. Particularly useful was their suggestion of a disaster supplies kit, which I now have. Some items in the kit were predictable--like a first aid kit, but others were not and make a lot of sense like a NOAA emergency radio, list of key addresses and contacts, extra prescription medications etc. While I don't expect to need it for an evacuation or terrorist emergency, these are supplies I would need in other emergencies from power outtages to storms etc. They recommend that you pack this in a carryall and take with you on trips as well.5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely relevant and necessary.
In view of recent national events and all the possibilities, this book is a "must-have" for everyone. Written in a concise, easy to undertstand style, it covers the full range of potential dangers and how to prepare and react. I think the title is so appropriate, and the book delivers on that theme. ... Read more
