2-0 out of 5 stars Another perspective
I absolutely loved the vignettes in this book but found much of her information to be incorrect. While I do agree that medicine has destroyed the magic of birth, I do not believe that it is a commercial conspiracy against women.Women are able to research pregnancy and childbirth at any time (currently) so it's not 'the man's' fault is she chooses to remain ignorant on the subjects.
1-0 out of 5 stars Trash
I'd rate this book zero if I could. The author obviously hates white Christian males and puts down the Christian religion vehemently in this tabloid rag book. She has had one birth, and that was an experience which was bad, yet claims to be some sort of expert on the perfect birth experience. When it comes to birth experiences and trying to change the world when it comes to these experiences, one shouldn't just rant and rave theories after just one try, but should know what she's talking about and have some serious experience "under her belt" (i.e. more than one experience).

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant writing, laugh-out-loud humor, a touch of the supernatural
". . . Real magic doesn't come from achieving the perfect appearance, from being Cinderella at the ball with both glass slippers and a killer hairstyle. The real magic is in the pumpkin, in the mice, in the moonlight; not beyond ordinary life, but within it." - Martha Beck, Expecting Adam
5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful exploration of life and living
Martha Beck has written a stunning memoir of her journey from driven Harvard grad student to delivering and parenting a child with Down's Syndrome. And yet, Beck's story and lessons apply far beyond pregnancy and having a child with Down's. She explores and challenges the premise of modern life, which is hurry up and constantly do more, without taking time to appreciate and enjoy. Her account is honest and insightful, making it all the more valuable as a vital life lesson. The loss of dreams and expectations, when faced and acknowledged, is transformative, and Beck openly shares the difficult and painful twists and turns that redefined her identity of wife, mother, and indeed even woman. She deftly weaves the love and joy Adam brings into the background of her life. Beck doesn't take the easy way out by proselytizing-instead, she openly admits the heartbreak of being judged and found wanting for choosing to continue her pregnancy when it was discovered that her son had Down's. This is thankfully not an anit-abortion story. It is the ultimate pro-choice testament-and what a testament it is. Beck has the courage to describe her struggle to move beyond reason and logic, which are innate to the Harvard culture, and reside comfortably with intuition and a sense of something bigger than the concrete, visible world.
3-0 out of 5 stars Went on too long...
Kinda felt like 9 mos. had passed while I read this book, she really could have used a better editor.I did learn a lot about Down's Syndrome from Ms. Beck, which was interesting.Got bored with the constant Harvard references--enough already. Was distracted *SPOILER* by what has happened to the Beck's since this book was written--both spouses have "come out" and live with same sex partners. How that all came about would be an interesting book to me. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I believe that this book is a good guide for parenting and is a great resource for parents!Give it a try and come to your own conclusions.
1-0 out of 5 stars CHILD-CENTERED AND NOT CHRISTIAN AT ALL
As a Christian, I found this book to be very apalling and offensive.I don't know how they can call this book "CHRISTIAN parenting".The authors take Bible verses out of context to support their own views--views that encourage making the child the center of the family (at the expense of your marriage), only doing what makes your child "feel right" (whether that means not disciplining your child, not making them sleep in their crib, never letting a baby cry, etc.) The authors are entitled to their own opinion, but they should not call their views "Christian" when it's clear to me that many of their views go against what the Bible teaches.God calls us to do the right thing, whether it FEELS good or not.God calls us to lead our children, not let them control & manipulate us, like this book advocates.Following the principles in this book will lead to a chaotic, child-run, sleepless household. On the contrary, if you want order in your home, great sleep at night and a great marriage, follow the principles in "On Becoming Babywise", "Babywise II" and all the books in that series. They are awesome, God-honoring, practical books. All of my children have slept through the night by 8 weeks old and are healthy, happy, well-adjusted and secure, largely due to the healthy guidelines in the Babywise series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic

5-0 out of 5 stars An ideal shower gift
My husband bought this for me right after our daughter was born. It offered me a few much-needed moments of laughter in what was occasionally a very intense and overwhelming time. I especially love the part about what it's like the first time you try to get your baby to the pediatrician's office.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent book for the un-informed.
Book gave basic information about the disease.I would like to have seen more in-depth information about the causes, statistics and treatment. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, and am already aware of the majority of the information in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Been There
Having been a patient of Ms. Sebastian's several years ago, I can honestly say that everything she talks about in this book is based on what real women (like me) have been through.I especially liked the coverage of the anxiety that can frequently go along with the depression, of which many people are unaware. This book is easy to read and understand, which can be helpful when you are suffering from depression/anxiety and may be having trouble with memory or concentration.Other women's "stories" in the book help you to realize that you are not alone and that there is successful treatment.I am proof!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comforting AND Smart
This book was _very_ important to me after my miscarriage, because it was a kind book that provided comfort but also didn't dumb itself down in order to address the very real and complex stages of grief. Kohn and Moffitt also give an excellent portrait of what people on many sides of the loss experience--mothers, fathers, family members, friends--as they all respond differently to pregnancy loss. I particularly appreciated the chapter on Early Pregnancy Loss, given that the authors discuss how this can be an especially "silent sorrow" and one that has its own special challenges of bereavement. Highly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars A Silent Sorrow: Pregnancy Loss
In the words of the late Erma Bombeck, "Motherhood isn't just a series of contractions, it's a state of mind. From the moment we know life is inside us, we feel a responsibility to protect and defend that human being".Perhaps it is that fact that makes pregnancy loss, at any stage, such a devastating, life altering experience. For those of us in this unenviable club, "A Silent Sorrow" offers a powerful, therapeutic journey to recovery...a must read.Kohn and Moffit thoughtfully address every type of loss - from miscarriage to newborn, and those having to make painful choices.Throughout the book they inject real life narratives, validating our innermost thoughts and feelings, while presenting sound advice, comforting words and encouragement on how to cope with every aspect of life after loss.Their discussions include managing overwhelming grief, as well as the impact on our various relationships, careers, infertility and subsequent pregnancies. Chapters on religion and rituals, and the important roles they can play in the healing process, are extremely helpful. The extensive, fourteen page resource list with valuable support group information is a final gift from the authors.According to Kohn and Moffitt, the purpose of this book is to provide guidance, comfort and hope to those in need.I for one think they exceeded their goal and am forever grateful. Years after my loss this book continues to provide comfort when I need it.I would highly recommend "A Silent Sorrow" for anyone whose heart has been broken by the loss of a child.

3-0 out of 5 stars I never reached the "confidence" point
I was very disappointed with the way the book put down giving birth in a hospital with a doctor - constantly. I got tired of it, and couldn't even finish the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This book is a refreshing departure from so many of the fear-based mainstream maternity books out there. The authors clearly present the benefits of normal birth to both mother and infant with humor, compassion, and respect. The authors not only describe our present birth culture, they describe how it came to be and how we can influence it.As a midwife and a mother I would recommend this book to both clients and friends even before conception.Too few women are aware of the prenatal and birthing options that are available to them.I believe this book has the potential to help remedy this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a positive book on birth!
This book is great-- I picked it up at the beginning of my pregnancy when I was looking for information on having a natural birth. This book spells everything out in clear language and provides information on both medicalized and natural, normal births. So many birth guides out there leave a lot to the imagination when it comes to discussing having a birth without medical intervention-- the Lamaze Guide delivers the pros and cons in extensive detail. I recommend this book to every pregnant woman and women trying to conceive. It sheds a new light on what you *thought* you knew about pregnancy and childbirth. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST book for beginning IVFers!!:)
I wish I would of found this book first! It's an easy read with so much valuable information. It covers everything from IVF lingo to sample cycles AND gives great commentary from women and men who have survived & succeeded with IVF.I couldn't put it down & constantly found myself sharing interesting info from the book with my husband. You won't be disappointed with this one!!!
2-0 out of 5 stars Good Info, But Trite and Patronising
The book is filled with good definitions about the winding road that is IVF-fertility treatment is packed with acronyms, abbreviations, and science, and the author does do a good job of explaining what all of the acronyms and abbreviations are.The book flows well and has wit, but the constant underlying message is one of success!IVF succeeds!Just keep your legs in the air/take to bed rest/keep thinking smiley happy positive thoughts and it always works! As someone who's been through a few rounds of IVF and ongoing still, it's not that easy for most people.IVF is hard enough without infusing constant messages of false hope-I feel the author is irresponsible in suggesting that IVF can be otherwise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book! A Must-Have for IVFers!
I am the kind of person who researches and reads EVERYTHING when they are faced with an issue or problem.Needless to say, I have purchased a multitude of IVF books, and this one is one of my favorites. It goes through the IVF process step-by-step, shares sample protocols, and explains ALL the medicines. In fact, I found myself going back and re-reading several parts of the book while in the midst of the IVF process. It's simply a must-have! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable perspective!
There seems to be some vastly differing opinions on this book and what it actually says.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gave Me Hope
My husband found Inconceivable while searching Amazon.com for a book that might help me deal with the devastation and hopelessness I was feeling after 3 failed in-vetro attempts. When I first started reading it, I was a little bitter because the author already had a child and was just frustrated because she could not seem to get pregnant with a second child.Being desperate for a first child, I wondered how someone who already has a child could possibly help me, but I kept reading, and after a couple chapters, I realized what her real message is....trust your instincts, your eating habits DO matter, and open your mind to actively research alternative options in addition to the conventional. The bottom line is to do what you think is right for you. What an empowering feeling!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Infertility Story
This book is the inspiring story of a woman in her 40s the doctors said would never mother another child. She took matters into her own hands, made some lifestyle changes, read up on Traditional Chinese Medicine, and eventually became pregnant and mothered her own child. It's an easy read, and opens the doors for you to learn more about alternative treatments. If you've been through every Western fertility treatment with no success, read this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST pregnancy book
This book is INCREDIBLE.I read it straight through- cover to cover. It is truly amazing to see and read about the miraculous development of a baby.I'm a biologist and I can truly say I learned a lot from this book.As others have the said, the photography is very detailed.Your baby can be viewed at any stage of development. The descriptions outline exactly what is going on develpmentally.I was fascinated to read about what my baby is capable of doing in utero even at such and early phase. Out of all the books I have purchased during my pregnancy this one really shed light on what was going on inside of me.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must if you're having your first child
We were so interested to see what was going on inside, which is why we purchased this book.It really helped us bond with our first daughter when we saw photos of her progress.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Images
I saw this book at work [California Science Center] and immediately wanted to buy it, as so did my other staff members and friends. 2 of the girls in there are pregnant and they actually cried because these pictures show you very clearly the picture of what your baby looks like inside you. It even shows you when the baby first starts smiling and laughing and even tells you when they have the hiccups. I think it's a great book for everyone not just people who are going to have a baby. I bought this book along with "A child is Born" and they both are great. ... Read more

The Unplanned Pregnancy Book for Teens and College Students is an excellent resource for young parents-to-be.Williams-Wheeler has compiled a step-by-step guide so an individual can formulate a course of action and gain insight into their purpose in life. The chapters are detailed and offer a non-judgmental description of all the options available.Particular attention is given to determining if you are actually pregnant, how to have conversations with parents and boyfriend/child's father, what to expect during the pregnancy, parental assistance programs, what will the baby need, the 411 on abortion, adoption, future contraception, and an extensive resource section with addresses, telephone numbers and internet addresses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Warning - Do not read in last trimester!
This book is very funny, weirdly prophetic and difficult to read if you've got 8lbs of baby pressing down on your bladder!

Editorial Review

Less time, more demands, jealous siblings, displaced spouses, bigger bills, and bigger automobiles: given all these cons, why on earth would any sane couple consider having more than one child?Author Joan Leonard deals readers a rather loaded deck of cards as she succinctly describes the joys--but mostly the burdens--of "welcoming" a second child to the family.Despite its sweet title, this little book takes a rather acrid look at the unique challenges second-time moms and dads encounter. Luckily for the reader, Leonard presents plenty of advice from pediatricians, gynecologists, family therapists, and parents who have been through it themselves. Topics cover changes couples face during pregnancy, birth, and all of baby number two's first year. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic view, good coverage, I feel much more prepared now
I read the other reviews before purchasing the book and was drawn more to it because of the great difference in opinions, either hating or loving the book. I think the book is very good and provides a realistic, balanced view. Instead of being more anxious, negative or even regretful after reading it, I felt calm and more prepared.
4-0 out of 5 stars Review
some very useful hints for older child when bringing baby home.most of it is common sense, but there are some good ideas i am using. Some of the anecdotes are comical.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Advice and Very Easy to Read.
Reading other reviews of this book, I had considered not purchasing this book. But I decided to go ahead and take a chance since many reviews did say that she was brutally honest.

3-0 out of 5 stars Greatideas to get your creative juices flowing
I got this book from the library prior to commiting to buying it. After ordering 8 books from Amazon this one wasn't one of them. Most of the ideas are too darn "cutsie" for me (i.e.cropping your baby's photos and putting mouse or bunny ears and whiskers is my definition of "cutsie"--not my style of scrapbooking, I'm not here to offend anybody who prefers this). The back of the book has lettering patterns and title ideas which anybody may find on numerous websites such as scrapbooking.com.I suggest this book is great for those begginers who need ideas for baby scrapbook themes: Documenting pre- & post-pregnancy, baby's firsts, baby's nursery, etc.It does not have much explanation on how the pages were constructed, but for my own sake I usually don't follow step-by-step,visualizing the parts of a layout from the photo itself. This book may be good for a beginner, but more advanced scrapbookers might find it too outdated.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent idea book, but hard to replicate what you see.
There's a ton of pages to look at, but not as much information about technique as some other books I've seen. If you're already into scrapbooking and just need some fresh ideas, this could be helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good creative ideas
I have been scrapbooking for years now and with baby #1 on the way wanted some additional creative ideas. This book does have some great ideas of varying complexity and documenting some of those moments that I may have not thought of.I recommend this for anyone doing baby pages. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars depressingly enlightening
I find this book fascinating for many reasons. My wife and I have just decided to have a baby, and I had read excerpts on salon before the book itself.I found myself agreeing with many of the sentiments expressed. In the decision, I found myself trapped by my own selfishness, and found that mirrored in many of the essays. But I thought: what if my parents had been this selfish? What if all they were concerned about was the mess their kids would turn their house into? The loss of free time? To be honest, I was very concerned that I wasn't "cut out" for parenthood - but reading these essays, I came to grips with my selfishness, and realized there's more to life than me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good only if you want kids
Most of the childfree/childless people in this book claim that they may change their minds or regret not having kids. Only one really stood out and said no I am never having kids (Elinor Burkett) The ones who were on the fence really seemed like they will all have kids one day. And there are no I regret having kids stories from the parents.
2-0 out of 5 stars To have and have not
One of those unique books where professional writers openly discuss their personal decisions on family and children. Interesting take is that they have all made decision and stuck with it in regards to whether or not to have children.Neither one of them seems to regret their decision and is firmly behind it.While some writings are more impressive than others, they all have in common he fact that they are sincere and open. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for your feedback, from the author....
To respond to reviewers comments:1-0 out of 5 stars DANGEROUSLY INACCURATE
I agree that this book is poorly organized -- but on top of that, the information in it isn't even true! For example, she claims that tofu has 20 grams of protein for four ounces-- not on this planet. In reality it's about half of that, about 9-13 grams. Same deal with beans-- she says 22 grams of protein in 1/2 cup of black beans--truth is more like about 7g!She also says that "iron anemia during pregnancy is normal." Yikes!! It's terirbly dangerous and can make you hemorrage during birth! Chuck this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless Book - reads like it was thrown together in a week
Useless anecdotal information from the author and a ridiculous number of stories from other vegetarian mothers. We get it already - it's OK to be a pregnant vegetarian!!The first two sections are nearly totally the above and the rest is simplistic nutritional information which can be had anywhere. If you want eating plans and recipes don't buy this book.I agree with the other reviewer that What To Eat When Your Expecting is a gem next to this one.Don't waste your money! ...
