3-0 out of 5 stars Wow - a long wait!
I don't know where else to notify you guys, but I just received my order today and I ordered the product on July 27th. Today is 8/21.Did I miss the order confirmation language that said it would take me a month to receive my order? Or is this just how Amazon operates with the AmazonPrime program? I think I'd rather pay more money and buy my books at Barnes & Noble next time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!
As silly as you may expect this book to be, as a first time mom, I found it pretty darn helpful and practical. I really like the part where it tells you how to wrap the baby like a burrito, kind of like how they do it in the hospital. The nurses do it so quickly you can't really follow what they're doing, but the book actually gives you step-by-step instructions on how to do it. There's tons of great advice and tips on how to care for your newborn in the book, and you'll be laughing hysterically the whole time. Great for moms AND dads AND grandparents.
4-0 out of 5 stars hysterically funny
This is a good, amusing break from the super-serious tone of most of the how-to books available for new parents. Buy it AND the What to Expect books and you're all set for anything your baby throws your way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What I wish I knew before I got pregnant.
My son was born prematurely June 10, 2004.My 30 week ultrasound came back showing that my ambionic fluid was low and my baby only weighed 2 lbs. 7 ounces. The next day I was sent by my OB/GYN to meet with a perinatologist.Within 15 minutes of meeting the specialist, I was told my baby would be born witihin 24 to 48 hours and was admitted to the hospital 30 minutes later. My son was born via emergency csection 27 hours later.I was 31 weeks into my pregancy. He will spend 9 weeks in neonatal ICU before he can come home. This so far, has been the hardest and most heartbreaking part of my entire pregnancy.5-0 out of 5 stars essential for (expecting) preemie-parents
Upon hearing you're pregnant, most people will only have images of perfect babies. When hearing something is going wrong with your pregnancy, most people have no idea what to expect.5-0 out of 5 stars The book for a high risk pregnancy and the NICU
A very helpful book for reading during your high-risk pregnancy and when your baby is in the NICU.I did think that the anecdotes about women's experiences with terbutaline and magnesium sulfate were unnecessarily alarming. This book complemented Linden's Essential Guide for Parnets of Premature Babies nicely. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
As a woman who breastfed eight children (including her adopted child!) Martha Sears is exactly the sort of person you want writing books about breastfeeding. Her tone is loving and gentle while still offering a wealth of information and troubleshooting tips. Like most women I know, I found breastfeeding to be much more complicated and difficult at first than I'd anticipated. The first couple weeks were rough for me and I give much credit to this book (as well as my lactation consultant) for getting me through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Any New Mom!!!
I used this book as a reference when nursing my own children, now give the book as a gift to my friends and relatives who are expecting a baby.
1-0 out of 5 stars Hurt More Than It Helped
I was given this book as a gift and was eager to exclusively breastfeed my baby. The first few days after we got home from the hospital, however, things were not working right.I fed and fed him, yet he never seemed satisfied.I scoured The Breastfeeding Book for information about low production levels, and basically all it said was that it is rare and not to worry about it--just breastfeed frequestly and your supply will increase.I did just that, yet my supply never increased. My baby was so hungry and I was frantic and felt completely inadequate! This book basically implied that giving your baby any formula is just short of child abuse and breastfeeding is the only option, no matter what.Thank goodness a lactation consultant finally worked with us, determined that, in fact, my supply was too low for my baby, and recommended I supplement with formula. My baby was so happy after that, my supply actually increased after I started supplementing, and we are still doing a combination 4 months later. There is no way we would have stuck with it this long if I had followed the advice of this book and just breastfed.I give this book one star because, although there is some useful information, it makes moms feel like failures if they can't or don't want to breastfeed for a year or more.Being a mom is so much more than how you feed your baby! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good, practical, honest, and funny
I admit, if you are a brainwashed La Leche fanatic or one of those moms who gives up her entire identity (and marital bed!) to motherhood, no, you probably don't like this book. However, if you are a normal person who wants a lot of honest, practical advice, this book is both entertaining and informative. She doesn't advocate IGNORING your baby's needs...she advocates remembering that MOMS have needs too!! And, frankly, anyone who has seen a one-year-old cry and then stop to see if you're watching knows that babies indeed can be "manipulative." Perhaps that is too harsh a term, but I have the sense that the people who vehemently criticize this book are the same people who still share their beds with a four-year-old who asks, "Mom, could you lift your shirt so I can have a snack?"

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, Insightful and Fun
Jane Buckingham shows the same with and insight in this book as she does on her t.v. show. This is a great book for mothers, people who want to be mothers, people who know mothers and people who have mothers.

5-0 out of 5 stars indispensable!
This book came into my life when vacation renters in my summer house left it behind.I started reading it--and then the renters called, wanting their copy back--so I had to go out and buy my own!I am the mother of twin boys, and the handy, insightful advice--which is doled out in a breezy, funny style--had an immediate impact in my house.(My husband is reading this over my shoulder and nodding his head).A must-have for any parent. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book was awesome!
I read it when I was pregnant with my son and have never forgotten it.I highly recommend it to anyone that is pregnant.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great insight for its time, a little dated/elementary for those familiar
Dr. Verney was certainly a pioneer and remains a leader in the field of pre and perinatal psychology. This book is a good primer, filled with citations and references. If, like me, you are someone familiar with the ideas presented, this book may seem elementary. I would have preferred to purchase one of his more recent titles with updates to his theories. This book is a little bit of singing to the choir, not a wholly dispassionate scientific study but that doesn't detract from its central message that the pre and perinatal environment matters.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for every pregnant parent
This book throws light on the serious physical, psychological damages caused to humans from the type of birth experience and womb life they have.It is purely based on scientific studies and is a great eye-opener to modern medicine and its attitude towards birth.Today's moms are drugged heavily, split open and babies dragged out.And today's youngsters are just a reflection of those birth experiences.Studies show that children of moms who take pain relieving drugs during labor are more prone to abuse of drugs later in life. We just lost that loving tender moments of birth and its place in family. This books supports the Natural Childbirth and the fact that the unborn child does have a consciousness from the moment of conception.I have experienced certain moments in my pregnancy with my first kid, whenever I was depressed,or angry or broke down,I could immediately feel the baby kicking frantically and squirming about, and I would immediately stop at least for the sake of my baby.I remember an incident when a friend of mine came upto me once and cried about how her husband was treating her badly. She had a 4 month old son in her arms.Whenever she cried, the child would look at her frightened and cry with her. Each emotions the mother goes through, including her negative emotions like anger, sadness, unforgiveness, rejection etc can be sensed by the baby in her womb. And if we want our baby to be healthy, along with good nutrition,we should keep a good mental hygiene too, keeping away bad thoughts, resolving any past hurts and problems, being happy and loving your baby abundantly in your womb. This makes it easier for the baby to enter the world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Trouble enjoying your pregnancy?
If you've been having a difficult time with your pregnancy like I have, you will enjoy this book. After months of nausea and more aches and pains to look forward to, Joanne Kimes gave me a good laugh and made me feel less alone.I don't know about you, but I'm tired of everyone asking me, "Aren't you just so excited?!"I smile meekly while holding in a gag and let them know that yes, I'm very excited.Truthfully I'm miserable. This book reminds you that it's okay to feel less than excited about dry heaving every day.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best pregnancy book out there
I am currently in my sixth month and had been feeling quite sorry for myself because I have not enjoyed being pregnant, and was starting to feel like a mutant because everyone kept telling me to enjoy it."Think of all the women who'd love to be in your shoes but can't be for whatever reason."Riiiight.Joanne Kimes has written a book that I literally was giggling like crazy over for the entire thing. It describes EXACTLY how I've felt the whole time.I read this book in an afternoon/evening.It's a quick read, and you could skip around and just read whichever part you want/need, but I thoroughly enjoyed the entire thing.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book sucks as much as pregnancy...
Though the concept of sharing real life problems experienced during pregnancy is a great one, the author is extremely biased toward hospital birth managed by OBs.

1-0 out of 5 stars You have a 50/50 chance NO matter what!
Landrum Shettles shouldn't receive any more money for this "crackpot" book. There is absolutely no merrit or fact in this book what so ever. For your own sake do a little research on Shettles who was a complete "medical-cowboy" and was fired from Columbia-Presbyterian hospital in New York for trying to implant a woman with a "dirty" embryo. A must read is "Pandora's Baby: How the first test tube baby sparked a reproductive revolution" This book will give you the real facts about Shettles and his BS and everything you ever wanted to know about IVF.If anyone is SO desperate for a boy or girl try PGD (Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis). It's controversial but legal.Good luck:)

4-0 out of 5 stars It worked for us!!
I noticed this book 4 years ago after our first child (a girl) was born.
2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't work for us.
Read the book probably 5 times, charted temps, used ovulation predictor kits. Now having my 3rd boy. I'm very happy with my baby, but just wanted to add my 2 cents that it didn't work for us.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Pregnancy Book!
So many people in the birthing community just "know" that this is the authority perinatal book.Required reading for many programs, this book is able to equip the reader with the information needed during this time. It's a classic and should replace "What to Expect!"

5-0 out of 5 stars On my short list of pregnancy books
It really goes into a lot of detail about the newborn and postpartum recovery.Very nice and often not emphasized a lot in other books.Good info on the final weeks leading up to birth too like theories on what starts labor, the reasons some "natural" labor induction methods may work and physical changes that occur for mom and baby at the end.
5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended by a friend
This book is especially helpful to first time mothers, as it helps them to understand what to expect in a pregnancy as your body goes through so many changes. It pretty much takes you through the changes your body is going through and what to expect throughout the pregnancy and the birth and what to expect after your baby arrives. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing AND my baby is THRIVING
My baby now sleeps 12-13 hours a night. This book was instrumental in this process. She LOVES sleep and needs it. She now knows how to self-soothe. Anyone who says their baby won't thrive with a 4-hour feeding schedule is being a bit dramatic. This is a very simple concept, though I agree that with breastfeeding it is difficult to measure how much the baby is eating, so pumping is necessary. If you feel that this takes time from your baby breastfeeding directly from you, then it may not be the right book for you. For me, the tradeoff with pumping was worth her sleeping 12 hours through the night for the past 5 months (she's 8 months now). She wakes up happy and not crying. She naps an hour after she wakes up. What more could you ask for? Is this selfish?

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and Valuable Guidance
Well worth the few hours it takes to read. One of the things that I liked best about this book is its brevity and well organized format. After the foreward and an introductory chapter, the heart of the book is divided into three chapters based on the first 12 weeks of a baby's life as the title implies.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disgusting.....
This book is horrendous! Developmentally speaking, babies need to eat more than 4 times per day, this includes night feedings. Expecting your baby to suffer just so you can get some sleep is purely selfish. You shouldn't have had a baby in the first place if sleep is SOOOOO important to you that you'd be a neglectful parent. Sleeping through the night isn't worth putting your baby through this misery!

5-0 out of 5 stars Over-read new parent, Humor NEEDED NOW!
I have read half a million books about the process of pregnancy, birth, and the first year recently. It's all such serious stuff.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Gift Book for Dads, Trust Me
I loved this book because, as a new father learning my trade (so to speak) it gave me a break from all the pressure-packed, heavy advice books. With Keeping the Baby Alive, I could relax and laugh at the many ironies that come with child care. I also liked the book because I felt like it was written for me, an innocent young father who wants to do my best, but who also feels a little intimidated about infant care. The message here is 1) you don't have to be perfect and 2) you can actually have fun taking care of kids if you don't get too crazy and uptight about it. Besides, the book is just plain funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars just like life, only funnier!
Mr. Roark hits the nail on the head with this very funny, very real book. Any new Dad will be able to relate to "Keeping the Baby Alive...' It took me several years to realize that my husband was REALLY proud of himself whenever he took care of the kids - he thought he had done his job well---he had kept them alive until I got home! 4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful in the naming game
The best thing about this book was something that I saw in no other book. One of the ways we were looking at to name our child was to find words (or the meaning of the names for those we were naming for) and finding the hebrew word that meant that. This is the only book with a dictionary in the back of words (i.e., if you look up song, you will find Shira, if you look up Strong, you will find Ethan). So it was helpful when we were looking at naming in that way. There are so many names in here, it is great - not all of them are Jewish, per se, but all names seem to be in the book.It was extremely helpful in naming our child!

I wanted to take a quick look over the internet but the people who programed this site will not let you scan the book for one second. It is sad that you would have to by the book just to look for one sorry thing. And I am ashamed at the situation. And at the creaters of this site for not giving anyone the chance to look before they buy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy if you have your own chef
I purchased this book before it even hit the shelves because of how easy the preparation of the meals was supposed to be. The day before I was induced with my second child, I spent 3 and a half hours at the grocery store (with my 16 month old) trying to find all of the ingredients necessary for the plan. Over $300 later, I thought I had everything. Not so! On the very first day there were items on the menu that were not part of the shopping list. And meal preparation?! Not as easy as described for a new mom with a newborn. I needed a personal chef to get everything done for me. No wonder celebrities rave about this plan...they have money and chefs!

3-0 out of 5 stars sounds good...if you have a personal chef!
I was very excited to find this book, I first saw it on TV being advertised. So after baby #3 the weight didn't just "fall off" as it did with my first 2! I was gung ho, starting it when my son was 4 months old. My mother helped me with the first few days, (it DID work) cooking, but when she left...I fell off the wagon! For a couple of different reasons:For one, I have 3 children!!!I cannot cook every meal, including some of the snacks! My 3 hooligans keep me so busy (you would think I wouldn't have time to eat). I gave up one night as I was trying to prepare the next day's meals the night before and only got 2 of them done. The exercise part of it is pointless for me, I vigorously exercise on my own a few times a week, that is not a problem. And for another thing, I agree with another reviewer...there is so much waste!I ate the same lunch for a week!I was cooking 2 meals because my children don't like certain things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wise Guide to Reproductive Health
Fertility Awareness is more than a reliable, low-tech way to prevent or achieve pregnancy based on changes in body temperature and cervical mucus. It's a wise way for women to become aware of the rhythms of their own bodies and for their partners to share in this awareness. This essential first step will help solve America's epidemic of reproductive problems ranging from painful menstrual cycles to loss of sex drive to infertility. Singer profoundly understands the myriad ways that diet, lifestyle and environment affect reproductive health and provides an excellentdiscussion of the vital role that traditional animal products and healthy fats play in reproductive health and the risks of supposedly healthy low-fat products, soyfoods and other highly processed modern food products. As a Clinical Nutritionist, I have worked with many infertile female clients, many of whom were "health conscious" vegetarians or near vegetarians.Nearly all of these women regained their fertility, strengthened their overall reproductive health and just plain felt better after removing soy foods from their diets and adopting a varied, omnivorous diet rich in both protein and fat.Men also benefit from eliminating soy foods because the plant estrogens lower testosterone levels, diminish the libido and adversely affect both the quality and quantity of sperm. In short, if you value your sexuality and reproductive health, follow ALL the excellent advice in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars a must-read for every woman
Around the time I began using The Pill, a friend mentioned the fertility awareness method, FAM, to me. I wrote it off as the infamous "rhythm method." A year later, desperate to come off the Pill (not a good experience for me), I decided that FAM might be worth looking into.
5-0 out of 5 stars What a great resource for learning!
I bought this book when I recently attended a class given by Katie Singer on Fertility Awareness.I have been wanting to learn Fertility Awareness/Natural Family Planning for a long time for several reasons: to know more about my body and how exactly my cycles work, to gauge my gynecological health & have a tool for discovering problems, and to adhere to my church's teachings on birth control (I'm Catholic).

5-0 out of 5 stars Help and encouragement for plus-sized pregnant women
I am pregnant with my first baby and have been worried sick about my weight. I found this book, cowritten by a doctor and a plus-sized mom, to be an excellent resource. It answers my many weight-related health/medical questions, offers encouragement that my pregnancy can be absolutely healthy and successful, and gives me the sense that I have every right to relax and enjoy this special time.
3-0 out of 5 stars Just Allright
This book is ok. If you don't own ANY other pregnancy books by all means purchase this book. However, it contains the exact same info you can find in every other book out there. It is simply named for big women. It does contain a little more info on how to eat heathy. And it does contain info on how to chose a doctor who doesn't chastise a plus size woman. Overall a good book. I am glad that I borrowed it opposed to buying it since I own what to expect...

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Helpful
The nurse practitioner at my practice recommended this book to me. I am so happy she did. Big, Beautiful and Pregnant is a compassionate , plus-size friendly book that gives great advice about prenatal medical issues, nutrition and exercise, childbirth, postpartum life, and shopping for plus-size maternity clothes. After reading the book I know exactly what to do in order to make this pregnancy a healthy one. I think any plus-size woman can benefit greatly from this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
After reading many reviews, I finally ordered 3 books about premature babies. This book was definetly the BEST. I read through it daily and it answered many questions. Iespecially recommend it if your baby had no problems and was only in the incubator to grow up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for NICU parents
This book contained the answers to questions I had while my baby was in the NICU. As a second-time parent, I was especially concerned with attachment issues with my baby that might arise from being hospitalized. This book, written by the attachment-parent gurus helped to alieviate some of my fears as well as give tips for encouraging attachment. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better shower albums out there!
I bought this album for my best friend's baby shower and overall, I was really disappointed with it. The one thing I do like is the front cover - a really cute design and a place to put a picture of the mom-to-be or the baby. Otherwise, it is very underwhelming. The pages are relatively small (you could fit one 4x6 picture on a page) and so there isn't a lot of room for pasting bits of the napkins, ribbons, etc. Also, the invitation I used would definately not fit on the page dedicated to the invitation. There are pages for all the basic information (the scene, menu, guest list, baby gifts, crystal ball- prediction for baby, advice pages, wisdom from the grandparents, shower fun and games, shower keepsakes, and photos), but it was totally uninspiring.
4-0 out of 5 stars So cute!
This book is so cute and exactly what I was looking for.It makes a great memory book for mommy-to-be with pages for guests to give advice, make predictions keep track of presents. You can put a picture in the cover and there are places for the invitation and shower description.I couldn't find anything like it anywhere else!
