5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches Lifelong Health and Openmindedness about Trying New Foods
This book educates your child about the health level and quantity-intake of different foods, using the traffic light gradations of red, yellow, and green.Even today, after reading this book to my 4 1/2 old daughter since she was 2 1/2, she will pipe up and say, "Hey, this is a green light food, Mom!"We also use some of the recipes listed towards the end of the book, especially our own version of a balanced fruit smoothie.
5-0 out of 5 stars As straightforward as it says: Eat Healthy Feel Great
-Puts the revised 2005 Food Pyramid designers to shame withits straightforward, clear approach (versus the revised pyramid 'stripes' that are supposed to indicate how much of each fod group to eat but who can figure it out at a glance?)
5-0 out of 5 stars Building Good Nutritional Habits
What a wonderful resource for parents who are trying to "do the right thing" -- to teach their children healthy eating habits in the midst of a society that promotes the fast, processed, and packaged. Dr. Sears categorizes food into green light/yellow light/red light groups, and it's a concept my children (ages 2, 4) readily understand. The text is simple and clear, and the message is presented in a fun way. This book would be a big help to any parents interested in changing their families' eating habits for the better. There are parts in the book that are just for parents: they explain nutrition, as well as make suggestions on how to incorporate more "green light" foods in the family's meals. My children enjoy this book. They ask for it by name -- we've read it dozens of times. ... Read more

This is a beautiful book.Elizabeth's writing style is awesome. I have bought the book for my midwifery apprentice and she uses it in her classes and we use it as a reference book in our practice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heart & Hands: a Midwifes guide to pregnancy and Birth
This book was very informative although its geared towards the midwife,I am in the nursing profession so parts of the book were interesting. But being the mother of 4 children, I do wish I would of had this book for each of those pregnancies, its very informative and has some great ideas, especially if your wanting a natural childbirth experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on birth
I love this book so much I give a copy to every friend of mine that becomes pregnant. It is written in such readable and friendly terms and is not too overwhelming. Elizabeth Davis has set a high standar with this book. If someone asks me if they should read one book while pregnant waht would it be, this is it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a great book.I ordered this when I needed tips on how to help my son sleep.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only good for stay at home moms
This book has a strong bias toward co-sleeping and nursing for several years. It does not have any tips for increasing sleep for a working mom, and it offers no help to anyone that does not want to share a bed with their 3 year old.

2-0 out of 5 stars For attachment parents only
I bought this book in a sleep-deprived haze when my baby was waking every two hours during the night.Instead of offering advice, strategies, or even sympathy, I was told that this sleep-deprivation is "nightime parenting" and that I should enjoy my baby while he is small and needy. The attachment parenting spin on this book is so strong that it is virtually useless to anyone who does not follow this philosophy. I sent this book off to Goodwill.I much prefer the book by Mark Weisbluth, Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child.Weisbluth explains baby sleep, at what ages certain naps develop, and most importantly, lays out various strategies for getting your child to sleep better. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun!
My husband has been reading it, and I've been sneaking peeks at it, and it's lots of fun.I think it's helping him understand a little more what I am going through right now, but then again, it takes some Cavemen a while to get in touch with their noncaveman side.=)He's getting there, and I think the book is definately helping him do that.I especially like the Dr. Brian tidbits.I'm learning a few things I didn't even know.=)=)

5-0 out of 5 stars A accurate and hysterical account of the experience
This is the mens version of the Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy series.Hysterical but painfully accurate which can bring any hormonally driven pregnant man to tears just to know that he is not alone in his weight gain and morning sickness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Experienced Caveman Father
I picked up this book for a friend of mine who is expecting his first child. While I am a veteran of the pregnancy and child birth process, I decided to hold onto the book for a bit and check it out.Dave and JR have hit a home run with this realistic and quite humerous guide to being a pregnancy companion.I especially enjoyed the list of "What Not To Do in the Delivery Room" as I definitely violated some of the caveman rules and paid dearly for it.Fellow cavemen, this is a must read.Enjoy! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Gift
I bought this book as a gift, it is beautifully set out with pictures and sections to write your thoughts as the weeks go by in your pregnacy. I wish I had one for my pregnacy's.A great keepsake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great journal!
I used to use a similar one from Hallmark. It seems they don't make them anymore. Now that I'm pregnant with our third child I had a hard time finding something similar. This book is basically the same as the other one (just a little better because of the pictures and presentation).I am very happy with the purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book to save special pregnancy memories
5 years ago, I had my first child. At that time, my husband & I found the Anne Geddes pregnancy journal. You can't believe my excitement when I found that they are still made 5 years later to help celebrate another wonderful miracle. This book is so beautiful. The pictures are so precious and soft. The book provides just enough space to recap each special event & thought and includes every trimester for review!I can't wait to hand this over to my daughter some day to watch her joy as she reads about her growth & birth!

4-0 out of 5 stars So simple.
This is my first time being pregnant and i didn't want to be overloaded with useless information.
5-0 out of 5 stars Common sense approach to pregnancy
I'm 36, overweight, hypertensive, and having my first baby. I wish Pregnancy for Dummies had been the first pregnancy book I had purchased. I purchased three others before I finally got this - in my third trimester- after I rented the DVDs. This book is very straightforward and has sense of humor.I took a childbirth class chock full of info on natural childbirth, breathing, relaxing, etc. This book was a great companion to the class - a basic primer. If you need additional information, go ahead and buy a couple more books (25 is probably overkill, though. It's a baby, not a thesis).
2-0 out of 5 stars not worth buying if you want to know all your birth options
Since I am a nurse and doula amongst other titles, I figured I would see what this book is all about and I must say that I was very disappointed in it, including the tv program that was based on this book. This book reminded me of going to a hospital-based childbirth education class, where it only gives you one side of birth- the medicalinized way or no way at all, with intervention after intervention. It did not describe at all any of the pain management techniques other than medications, nor did it describe or mention homebirth or birth center options, or even doula support. If you want to know all the current info out there, this book is definately not the one to get. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for All Doctors and Women
This book describes why and how all women can and should go through pregnancy, labor, childbirth, and all of their reproductive functions without fear or pain, but rather in joy. While acknowledging the hard work and courage involved, the author (Grantly Dick-Read, by the way- only the forward is by Michel Odent) writes to help women understand what is happening in their bodies as they make their babies.
5-0 out of 5 stars In-depth study of how birth really works and how to have a good birth experience.
This book is a bit dense and took me a while to get through, but I gained a tremendous amount of knowledge because of it. The one thing that the doctor keeps repeating is that the key to a successful birth is relaxation and trusting in your body's natural abilities. If you have the time, do read this book, but if you need a shorter version, try Laura Shanley's Unassisted Childbirth. It really applies to any kind of non-doctor birthing, and includes all of the major points Dick-Read stresses.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Changed My Life
While in the Navy back 1990, I was told I could never deliver normally due to my small hip size. The combination of a good midwife and this book changed my course of life.Instead of checking out the cesarean books from the military library like I had been, I checked this book out and learned how to have a natural birth. It affected me so that I began teaching natural childbirth classes and became a doula/doula trainer, and ultimately wrote the book Christ Centered Childbirth of which the foundation is based on the principles in Dr. Dick-Reed's book.(Even dedicated my book to him!)Get this book if you want to have an easier birth, the birth God intended! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you read one book on infant stimulation, make it "How Smart is Your Baby"
When I became pregnant with my first child six years ago, one of the first things that I did was go to a bookstore to begin my reference library for babies.Along with the classics "What to Expect When Your Expecting" and the like, there are a sea of infant stimulation books.I think that I read the good majority of them, if not all.At that time, "How Smart is Your Baby" had not been published, but the book that did stay with me was "How To Teach Your Baby to Read".It was the only book that actually teaches you how to joyously and systematically stimulate your child.I have since read "How Smart is Your Baby" and it combines the principles of infant stimulation contained in all the other books written by Janet, Douglas and Glenn Doman.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, very practical, *very* effective!!!
As an Engineer, I feel much more comfortable with proven methods over theory and hearsay. So, when I first read "How to Teach Your Baby Math" and "How to Teach Your Baby to Read", I was a bit skeptical.I wanted to see results for myself. After just a few months of working with our daughters, the methods' positive effects were obvious. We stopped wondering if the programs worked, and started wishing we had started from birth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and a great book to own
I absolutely loved this book. I initially picked it up because of the pictures in it (most of the other books I looked at just had sketches) and quickly found that I really enjoyed the format of it and the overall wealth of information.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I Had Seen This Book 6 Months Ago!
What an excellent book.It is all-encompassing, and not only takes you through pregnancy in a non-biased way (giving you a broad perspective with a ob-gyn to a midwife) it gives you a look through and after child birth. The information is accurate, complete, helpful, and easy to digest. It puts all of the other pregnancy books to shame.I bought the old stand-by "What to Expect When You're Expecting" when I first found out I was pregnant and think it will work well for starting a fire in my fire pit now that I've found "I'm Pregnant!".

1-0 out of 5 stars Pro-life readers beware.
I loved this book until I started reading the fine print.Anyone who is pro-life will not appreciate the references to termination. It is also seemingly bragged that few down syndrome babies are now born due to early diagnosis and abortion.I find this to be a sad fact rather than something to rejoice over. The book was fantastic except for those parts which took the joy completely from this book. Many pregnancy books discuss medical issues without having to suggest abortion. It ruined the book for me.I tossed it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for parents of new preemies!
When our daughter was born 9 weeks premature, we immediately began looking for a source of accurate medical and practical information. When we found this book, we asked the director of neo-natal medicine at our child's hospital to look over the book. She immediately bought two copies for herself. The information is thorough and detailed without containing unnecesary detail. The medical information is presented understandably. A very good resource for worried parents of preemies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, needs updating
This is a great overview of just about everything a preemie parents needs to know. However, as the mother of a 370-grammer (26 weeks, doing great at 17 months) I would have liked to see a much larger amount of the book devoted to micro-preemies. Progress with micro-preemie survival is happening quickly and standards have changed a lot in five years.

5-0 out of 5 stars occupational therapist
This is an excellent resource book for both parents and health care professionals. With the recent trend towards family centered care, this book is truly an "essential guide". It has chapters on the medical procedures and medical nomenclature that is so foreign to those outside the medical community. There are also sections on the sociological implications and how a premature birth can affect the entire family. Healthcare professionals would benefit from a better understanding of the implications to the parents and families of these babies.I highly recommend that this book become a standard for neonatal intensive care nurseries. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally what I was trying to find.
This book is awesome. I am just TTC (trying to conceive) and this book really detailed the ups and downs of each month as you ride the roller coaster of your cycle. I also was reassured that if I have to take the next step, seeing a doctor, not all of the options for getting pregnant with help are as scary as I thought.
5-0 out of 5 stars I just finished this book
I just finished this book and wanted to check out what others thought and was surprised that there were people who hated this book so much.First of all, I have to remind these folks that this book is not supposed to be a medical book about infertility.Nothing about this book, from its cover design to the book description indicates that it is a medical reference or how-to book.Granted, I picked this book up at B&N and flipped through it first before purchasing it, that's why I don't feel duped by the contents in this book.I feel this this book is funny, original, interesting, and has plenty of good advice and descriptions of fertility treatment procedures. It's meant to be subjective and lighthearted. And for those of you going through torturous fertility treatments, it's understandable that this book will seem like it's making fun of the situation, but I don't think that that was what the authors intended to do.Anyway, this book is perfect for those that have an open mind, have been trying to conceive for no more than six months, and have a sense of humor.

4-0 out of 5 stars I wanted the truth!
I wouldn't say this book was the most comprehensive on fertility treatments, and it was a bit redundant with it's cute email-style writing, but if you are TTC (Trying to Concieve), you need to read it anyways.I really identified with the authors and felt as though I was reading my own story. It just felt so good to laugh, and to know I'm not the only one having these crazy thoughts and emotions while despirately wanting to get pregnant.

2-0 out of 5 stars good and bad
This book has some good information on what to look for during growth spurts and developmental leaps however, I can not believe some of the comments they published in this book!It really upset me.One stated how the mother gave her baby a "good shake".New moms read this for advice! There is a box on the page that says "shaking CAN be harmful".Can???Shaking IS ALWAYS harmful and NEVER ok.The very next page begins to describe how a mother admits to SLAP her baby not because she doesnt like him, but because she wants him to be happy and she feels alone! What a horrible message to give to mothers.I am not even finished reading this book not even halfway done, but I don't know if I want to now!Im afraid that someone will read this at their wit's end and think its ok to do these things.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was very disappointed by this book. After doing hours of research on the internet to find a book that would help me nourish my baby's intellect, this was the worst text I ended up purchasing. My main problem with the book is that it did not deliver on its claims.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for all 1st time parents!!
I thought I knew a lot about baby's developement after child care education and years of being around friends' babies, but when I had my own 5 weeks ago, I was caught a little off guard when I realized my lack of understanding about what the newborn is going through and how to deal with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book worked for us!
Before our son (now 7 1/2 years) was born, I read all the major baby books carefully. But none of the advice on putting the baby to sleep worked. His disposition was evident in the hospital: he was serious and irritable although he was not a colicky cryer. He would not sleep unless held, nursed or rocked, could not be put down, and got overstimulated by almost anything. We got rid of his expensive crib, stroller, playpen, and swing almost unused. At 3 weeks old my sister-in-law gave me this book and it just worked. My son slept with us and was carried in a sling almost constantly. He is now a highly independent first grader who excels academically, is a voracious reader, creative and his own person. He requires very clear and structured discipline and routine which we started early because the Sears book warned that high need babies are usually high need children (I recommend Setting Limits with Your Strong Willed Child, and Raising Your Spirited Child).I would have thought the high need child business was just psycho-babble until this wonderful boy landed in our home and after talking to parents who have a first, second, or third child like him.Unless you've been in the shoes of a parent with a kid like this, you have no idea.We now have baby twins and all the stuff in the regular baby books works and life is easier. After a lot of soul searching and rereading and talking to other parents, my husband and I decided to practice attachment parenting (modified somewhat--our babies sleep mostly in cribs since 6 months and love their stroller) now out of choice not necessity. There are some people who would never practice any advice in this book--the recent norms in our society are so deeply entrenched (which I believe causes the low breastfeeding rates)--but read it and make your own judgement and don't listen to people who say you'll ruin your kids, you won't.Find what works for you and trust your instincts and remember this stage passes quickly. You only get to love and hold babies for a short time before they're off and running.

2-0 out of 5 stars Attachment Parenting Ruined My Life
As a first-time expectant mother, I thought the idea "Attachment Parenting" sounded nice; a gentle, devoted approach to mothering, and one I could provide as a stay-at-home parent.
5-0 out of 5 stars It openes my eyes on my baby.
Yes, this was my first book by dr. Sears and it helped me a lot. I was reading it while my little one was asleep in my lap and I found out that she was a normal baby with needs and not a monster who needed to be taught who is in charge. As a new mom and without any friends or support I felt so inadequate in this new motherhood thing. I was scared to spoil my baby and overdo things but this book brought me an insight and gave me a lot of confidence in what I was naturally doing.

Only 30 minutes old, and a baby stares at her mother'sface, then begins maneuvering downward toward mom's nipple. A few days old, and shecan track a ball, and "dialogue" with her limbs. Newborns are extraordinary beings, with innate abilities far beyond what is commonly believed. In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for health care professionals, too!
I'm a pediatrician, and I recommend this book, not only to new parents, but also to health care professionals. This fascinating work is basically an annotated illustrated bibliography to the research in this field. Any professional who wants to know more can take this work as a wonderful, paradigm-shifting and enlightening starting point, and follow the cited works to further work.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book you can read during pregnancy!
This was by far the best book I've read during pregnancy. It's a fast and interesting read with great information and research that both my husband and I found equally exciting and valuable. I can't stop telling people about it. It's the only book I've read that doesn't preach about the wrong and right way to do things, but offers research to show how intelligent and aware newborns are. It is much less about the parents and much more about the babies. I would highly recommend this to anyone expecting a new baby in their family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and practical
You may see a few discussions amongst these reviews about certain techniques suggested by this book. Some people take offence that certain techniques are suggested at all.But the most valuable thing I found about this book is the fact that it presents *all* possible options/methods available for weaning of various agegroups, in a very comprehensive and objective manner - and leaves the decision up to the reader to apply what suits them, their situation and their baby/child best.It has a lot of practical solutions and presents the pros and cons for every method and agegroup in a very unbiased way, therefore assisting decision-making based on a reader's own unique situation.Kathleen Huggins' style of presentation reminded me of the style used by Elizabeth Pantley (author of 'no cry sleep solution') in presenting all possible options in a non-judgemental and non-biased way.Using this book enabled me to wean my daughter without any tears or trauma at all (to her or me) and helped me decide/recognise if/when she was ready for weaning.I found this book a lot more objective than the Norma Jane Bumgarner book 'Mothering your Nursing Toddler' which is wonderful but is mostly only useful if you want to reinforce or take on a 'wait until the child weans themself' (read = 4 years plus) view of weaning.Kathleen Huggins presents the possibility (among others) that just as a child would eventually potty train themself (albeit a lot later than if shown what to do), they are also perfectly capable of weaning earlier than if not guided to do so.Similarly she presents many caring and gentle ways to guide your baby/child to wean earlier than if not 'guided' in any way and left to wean for themselves - provided they are ready. While presenting views on weaning at both ends of the scale such as'martrydom'/'earth-mother'/'child-led' and 'let them cry/don't let the child control'/'mother-led' etc., Huggins also provides a middle-ground so that the reader gains enough options and information to adopt a weaning style that suits themself, their situation and their child.

1-0 out of 5 stars "How I Can Sell You on Breastfeeding Until Your Child is 4"
I was so offended by this book.I found it incredibly condescending. It was basically a list of reasons why one might stop breastfeeding and instead of offering the best way to wean under the circumstances Huggins proceeds to handle the reason like an objection and then tells you your reason isn't good enough and comes up with reasons why and how you can keep nursing. The decision of when to wean is incredibly personal and I don't need this author to tell me why my reason isn't good enough. My baby is nine months old and I am planning on weaning around her first birthday.I was looking to this book to show me techniques on how to wean gently, not to make me feel guilty for not nursing until she's four! She also tries to make it seems like giving your baby formula is akin to giving them poison - please!Don't waste your money!

2-0 out of 5 stars Great for cultural perspectives,Poor for actual weaning.
I actually give this book 5 stars for historical and cultural/social perspective on nursing and weaning but 2 stars for the actual process of weaning. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Should Get6 Stars...
... since this is the *definitive* book for people like me who've been through this life-changing experience. And as an avid reader who's already bought many other Preemie books, I sure don't say WOW lightly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good therapy
This book was very helpful to me and my husband. We had a long NICU stay of 9 weeks and felt like we were the only ones in the unit who wasn't in and out. This book caters to people like us who had to deal with the on-going, never-ending days of procedures, tests, emotional ups and downs, and disappointments. I was really able to prepare myself for discharge with the chapters about homecoming. The best part of this book was that we didn't feel so alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-rounded and thorough compendium of vital information
A 902-page compendium of information, Parenting Your Premature Baby And Child: The Emotional Journey by developmental psychologist Deborah L. Davis and clinical psychologist Mara Tesler Stein addresses dealing with powerful and painful emotions associated with being the parent of a premature child, physical recovery from difficult childbirth, forming bonds with one's baby when it must be kept in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), dealing with the difficulties of discharge, homecoming, and settling in, observing one's child for evidence of disabilities and coping with them, and also, how to deal with the loss of a child. Parenting Your Premature Baby And Child presents the wisdom of experts in no-nonsense terms for lay people and parents. An extensive index allows for quick reference, in this well-rounded and thorough compendium of vital information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required for anyone in a perinatal program
This is a book that covers just a little bit of everything in perinatal education. It has non-biased information, solid references, and an easy-to-read format.4-0 out of 5 stars Very mainstream but worthwhile
While I am not a "mainstream" childbirth educator, there are many aspects of this book that I have found myself referring back to during my teaching career. It was very helpful in learning about the adult learnerand thier particular physical, emotional , sociocultural and cognitiveneeds. The chapter on the "the basis of relaxation" was veryinteresting as it helped me understand the history of using relaxation inchildbirth and the different philosphies behind each technique. Biofeedback, therapeutic touch and acupressure were presented in anextremely informative manner. The basics of the childbirth educationbusiness arepresented( something that can be overlooked in most teacherspassion for their "Cause"). A very mainstreamm textbook that canbe of great value to both hospital and independent educators alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kangaroo care is five stars
Kangaroo care is an excellent book for people with preemee's. It takes you through all the aspects of what is happening during the first few days or months of your young ones life. Nothing is left to the imagination.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly covers its topic
Upon reading this book, one finds that it's very clear the author is extremely supportive of the use of Kangaroo Care to cure just about whatever may ail your premature baby.Despite the repetitiveness of this, the book is chock-full of just about everything you'd need to know about Kangaroo Care.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
