5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of userful advice
We turn to a lot of books for helping in raising our daughter (now 2 and a half) and the various issues we face."What to Expect the Toddler Years" is among our top three, along with Penelope Leach's "Your Baby & Child" and the American Academedy of Pediatrics's "Caring for your Baby and Child".The advice of the three is quite consistent (including on such "hot button issues" as when to wean), but this What to Expect Book provides the greatest help on day-to-day stuff. The philosophy is consistently respectful of the child, and the book is full of useful advice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I enjoyed the first two books in this series so much that I did not even look at the reviews listed here before putting it on my birthday wish list. Now I wish I had. I guess I would call what I do "attachment parenting" and I have not yet decided when to cut my son from the breast -- but unless he insists it won't be his first birthday. When I read the section on breastfeeding I literally threw the book across the room. It is not just biased, it is flat out wrong. I happen to know a lot about breastfeeding and so I suppose I could just ignore them on this issue -- but with it being so wrong I wonder what else they got wrong; things about which I am not knowledgeable.

2-0 out of 5 stars Eh, it was okay, but...
The first two entries into this library were great, but this book did not live up to my expectations. Some of the advice given was outdated, and sometimes just plain wrong.I have used it a bit, and I do read the monthly chapters as my child ages, but I would not use it as my primary source of information, and certainly not as my sole source of information. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Love the help for my toddler
She really breaks it down and helps me understand my son's sleep patterns, what he needs me to do and what I may want to consider changing in our routine.I've made a few changes as she suggested and so far so good!

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked for us!
I highly recommend this book for anyone! It was our saving grace!
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must for any parents with toddlers
I read countless books on sleeping out of desperation.I've met a few parents who think they have all the answers to the sleep problem and they have only one child who happened to be 'not normal' and sleep well.I wish I had read this book much earlier.I tried cry-out methods (and there're many variations) and they only work temporarily.Everytime we sleep over at our in-laws, one of them get sick, or something changed, we had to go through the horrible cry-out methods over and over again.I've been thinking I am not persistent and can't control my own kids (I have two boys 4 & 2 1/2).While reading this book, I assessed my kids' sleep habits and was relieved they're normal and getting enough sleep.I just needed to adjust a few little things and even before I finished the book, everyone (including myself!) started sleeping better at night.Night routines are much more pleasant.Of course, there are nights they wake up and come to get me, but armed with helpful information, I can deal with it much more effectively and everyone quickly goes back to sleep.I feel much happier since I am getting better sleep at nights. We're expecting our third and I am going to read her book on babies. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Homework Program for the Most Challenging Children and Teens
(From Dean R. Garrison, author of "Ending the Homework Wars")
5-0 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Before I read this book, I planned and spent my afternoons and evenings around my daughter's elementary school homework, keeping me from having time with the rest of my family.I spend countless hours asking her study questions, definitions, and checking her work.I hovered to make sure she "got it right".I used the Internet to brush up on concepts and topics that SHE was to be learning. Now I realize that by taking control of her homework, I was not allowing her to be responsible for it; I was sending the message that she couldn't handle the responsiblity on her own.Boy was I wrong! Now, although her grades are not perfect, they are HERS alone and she has earned them.Talk about boosting self-esteem!And I am now free to spend time with my family instead of re-learing mode, median and range!Thank you Mr. Rosemond! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Helped me understand our daughter!
I was looking for a short, easy to read overview about 4 year olds. I felt like I had a pretty good grasp on 1-3, but when our daughter hit 4, all control and understanding was lost! Ames' book really put the age in perspective -- she does a great job describing what's normal for 4. As a result, myhusband and I felt a bit less isolated, more secure, and confident as parents.

3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely helpful, definitely dated
My own four-year-old is now five.I read this book around the time he turned 4 so it's been a little while, but after reading the prior review I had to comment.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Oldie But Goodie!
I am a stay at home mom of three older children and a four year old boy and I loved this book.I had a lot of worries about my lovable and intelligent son and this book was just a sigh of relief.Almost everything I read in this book described my son perfectly. He has a lot of positive qualites, but also his share of negative qualities (all of which were covered in this book) and it was refreshing to read that he is normal and will grow out of most of these things by the time he is five.

...I could probably come up with most of the ideas in this book. It's O.K. and has some good suggestions for materials to purchase but I have barely consulted it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book for any parent, grandparent, or baby sitter
We use this book on a daily basis. My kids love doing something new everyday and this book is great for ideas. We also leave it out for baby sitters... they like it too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas!

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
I am now buying these books for friends who have kids this age. When my kids were small and would behave in a way I couldn't understand or find frustrating, I would open the age-appropriate book and --bang--there it was every time, detailing the behavior and explaining how it fit into the child's development. I read a lot of child development books but I thought these were by far the most realistic and helpful because they were researched with actual observation of the age group.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book!
I must say that this book is very accurate with respect to a 6 year old's behavior... In fact, there were many times when I laughed out of relief when I realized that the little one's behavior is "normal" for a six year old.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good insights if you can bridge the gap from 1979-2003
Overall, I liked the book. I was really looking for the 6-year-old version of "What to Expect: The Toddler Years." It didn't go into that degree of detail, but what it did cover was useful. The overriding message is that the time from 6.0-6.5 is volatile and often not much fun. Children are going through a lot of changes, very unsure of themselves, and need lots of reassurance (even when they're misbehaving terribly). The authors make the point that kids at that age typically aren't ready for advanced tutoring in morals, and suggest that simply ignoring a lot of the bad table manners, lying, pilfering, attitude, etc. can be the best approach. They observe that you can typically accomplish the same things better at age 7.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Crazy
I am going to be very opinionated here, but just to make the point to you of what it is like.I could not stand this book.I thought the ideas were LOONEY!They recomend that when you child has a tantrum, you join them to help them understand that you understand, even in front of others.Ha!No thanks.I do love my kids, but I also would like them to learn what is correct behavior in front of others. They do have to grow up eventually!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Having really enjoyed Happiest Baby on the Block, I thought this book would be helpful too. I was so turned off by it, I couldn't even finish reading. Dr. Karp is pushing evolution in explaining why toddlers behave the way the do. I just couldn't take it anymore.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just not that into it.
I also didn't like it. I don't see what the hype is about it personally. I thought Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy was great but this one doesn't tell you anything that common sense wouldn't! I say if you want to try it out, use the library. That way you aren't wasting your money on it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for making me feel normal!
I love Vicki's books, her sense of humour and sometimes outrageous comments help me feel sane in this otherwise insane parenting ride.If you're looking for the politically correct, always attached parenting book...please save yourself the bother, you'll only get hot under the collar! If, on the other hand, you struggle to do your best, have a load of parent baggage left over from your parents, feel life has got to be more amusing than it currently is...then read and enjoy!

2-0 out of 5 stars Ummm... what is everyone raving about?
I unfortunaely am not like every other person who has read this book . I too am one of those "Hippie" moms (not the worst thing in the world to be called, but I am insulted nonetheless)- although there are a few cute anectdotes in this book that make me smile I can only say that is why I gave this book two stars instead of one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Plan
I'm smack in the middle of reading this book, but I've done so much scanning of it, I've checked out what the book has to offer.I really feel like this book gives solid plans for many toddlers' routines. It's true that much of what she says is "common sense", but also a lot of it is stuff I wasn't thinking at the time I read it, so it gave me great ideas.I esp. liked her plans for bathing, eating, and diapering.I wish now that I had payed more attention when I read her baby edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars common sense...but couldn't we use a little more of that?
I like Tracy Hogg...and after reading her first book I was compelled to try this one as well. Although a lot of her wisdom is really common sense, it's always good to get a refresher. It's easy to get caught up in being tired and emotional as the mom of a toddler, so this book made me take a deep breath and re-evaluate my actions. I recommend it to all new moms!

2-0 out of 5 stars Common Sence
I thought this book was a lot of basic information about toddlers that most parents already know. It gave no strategies to try or routines to set up to make life easier. It basically says that to be able to manage your toddler's behavior you need to know what kind of a toddler they are. Ok? So I know my child is a "textbook" toddler, now what? I feel like the book doesn't go any further than that! It was a waste of money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for Parenting Two Year Olds
This book is part of a series (Your .... Year Old) that is by far the best of all the parenting books I have read.If you are at your wit's end because of some disagreeable behavior your toddler is exhibiting, the odds are it is covered in this book and considered normal for the age.The author explains the reasons why toddlers tend to do these behaviors, and then gives you excellent tools to avoid instigating the behavior, and to manage the behavior if it does occur.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Missing Manual"
My wife and I were recently blessed with the placement of three beautiful children (ages 2, 3 & 6) through Children's Protective Services.Having never been parents before, we were initially overwhelmed with the responsibility and chaos. We spent several tearful evenings wondering if we were cut out for the challenges of child-rearing.

This is a great book!It is easy to reference and easy to read.I use it all the time with questions I have about my kids sleep, diet, discipline, illness.... If you have a toddler, buy this book!

I read Baby 411 and when I found out there was a Toddler 411, I had to go out and get it. These authors know there stuff and there advice is so straight forward and helpful. I have been looking for a book on what to do with my son who is amazingly active, stubborn, and in need of direction. Most books out there were of little or no help regarding discipline and this book is just the opposite. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has a toddler....and when I say toddler, I mean 12 months, NOT TWO YEARS OLD!!! Go out and buy a copy of this for your library. It will be so worth it. 5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Parenting Handbook
Although some of the passages in this book and it's companion volumes are quite dated, it is still one of the most helpful parenting books that I have found in 25 years of teaching preschoolers. Many parents through the years have breathed a sigh of relief after reading these books which start with "Your One Year Old" and go all the way up to "Your Ten to Fourteen Year Old".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for parents of 5 year olds
When I gave birth, I hoped the manual would have popped out right after the baby, alas,I was wrong. We used The What to expect books until they no longer covered our age group. A local bookstore suggested Dr. Ames' books and they have been a GOD SEND! These books are the best from 2 to 5 so far they have been right on the money...Our son turns six in March and we are buying the 6 book tomorrow. My husband & I can not think of any other book(s) that has been more helpful or informative, than those written by Dr. Ames. Kudos to her and her easy to digest books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly helpful series of Books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book - Helps parents understand why their children do what they do
Other reviews have cited a lack of helpful hints in this book. Please know before buying, this is not a "how to" book. You won't find formulas for parenting. What you will find is an excellent study on the behavior and development of your child at any given age. This book is outdated in its look and in some of the scenarios presented. However, the observations and information laid out are timeless.A three year old is a three year - in 1972 or 2022.I see parenting as an adventure and a challenge, where each child is unique. It's my job to tailor the rearing of my child to suit him and these books help me do just that. This series has made me a more informed parent. For instance, in the 2 year old book I read that children at this age have a very hard time sticking to a decision. They want a drink, so you give them a drink. You then hear, "I don't want a drink!".So you take it back.Whereupon your child wails that he wants his drink. This can go on for an expastering long while. The more informed I am on what's age appropriate behavior, the more I'm able to separate my reactions from the emotional frustration that might otherwise erupt.I can then spend more time thinking rationally about how I can help him through this, rather than becoming angry.I love these books and think that all parents would benefit from reading. As I stated above, these books won't show you HOW to be a better parent.Just as reading a book on art history won't show you HOW to be a museum curator. But knowing and understanding art history is a must in order to be a great curator.Same with kids and same with these books.

4-0 out of 5 stars We read many books - this one was best for us
My wife and I are both college grads. Our son is now 4. My wife works part-time as a librarian, so we have access to just about any book in print. Around the time our son turned 3, we were "bewildered" as to how our sweet little boy could be turning into someone we did not recognize (or even like!). My wife brought home a vast collection of parenting books. She grabbed all of the popular ones (Dobson, Sears, Spock, etc), plus some more obscure or even controversial ones.
1-0 out of 5 stars Boring
This was just too boring for me to really give it a chance.I needed a book with tips and solutions, not just an over-analysis of what is typical 3-year-old behavior. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
Rosemond is one of my favorite parenting experts. I do not agree with everything he says, but a lot of it is wonderful advice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Please buy this book if you have a toddler or give it to your friends and family that do
John Rosemond's advice is right on the money. Our 2 year old is a joy to be around not only for his parents but for the all the other people that come in contact with him. And I have to give Rosemond's advice partial credit for that.

1-0 out of 5 stars AVOID THIS MAN
Children are a gift that YOU brought into this world; they are people that need love, understanding and coaching. They are not CHORES to be reduced and put away with as little effort as possible so that you can have 'more time for yourselves.'

5-0 out of 5 stars Parent-Friendly Guide to the Toddler Years
This book does a great job of providing you with an instant overview of what the toddler years (ages 1 to 3) are likely to have in store for you and your toddler. The author, Ann Douglas, who is best known for her books "The Mother of All Pregnancy Books" and "The Mother of All Baby Books," provides parents with a mix of parenting and health information, the very types of information that parents of one and two year olds need. Whether it's a discipline problem like biting or hitting or temper tantrums, a sleep problem like night-waking or early rising, a mealtime problem like picky eating or having hardly any appetite at all, health concerns, or your desire to tap into your toddler's desire to learn anything and everything about everything, this book has a lot to offer.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a lot of fun
How can you not like a book with this title? It is a huge book with tons of information.I find it a lot more helpful and user friendly than the what to expect series....but that's just my opinion...Great information - I keep it out for ideas, suggestions and to check up on my toddlers progress.

2-0 out of 5 stars not super
I had liked The Mother of All Pregnancy Books and decided to try this one. But I don't find it nearly as complete or helpful as "What to Expect the Toddler Years". I haven't read it cover to cover, but so far I find that the sections don't delve deeply enough into topics or offer unique suggestions/advice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY!! Real Info
Excellent book. I have read many books on toddler twins but I can now end my serach for "THE ONE". This is it. Practical, real life (no fluff), she tells it like it is and adds some very helpful tricks/tips. I couldn't wait until my twins were in bed at night so I could continue reading this book. I didn't rush it. I took my time and really related to each story. It was like I wrote the book, it was what my life is like. I longed to find out if there was someone else out there having the same issues as I was. It gave me a big boost of confidence when I found out it does get easier and what I have to look forward to. I had no idea what to do with my twins when they started taking off there diapers, while they were in bed, and then having accidents. But the book mentioned duct tape and it really works, it has saved me much cleaning and stress!! Thank You Elizabeth Lyons!- Mom of B/G twins 2 yrs old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for writing this book!
Any mom out there with twins or expecting twins, this book is a humorous real look at life with twin toddlers!I am a mom who stopped working to "enjoy these precious years" with my twin boys and have been pulling my hair out during this second year. This book allowed me to laugh and validated my feelings that I'm not alone- other "twin mommies" have faced these situations. I just wish I had read "Ready or Not.... Here We Come" during the first year.I hope this author continues to write!

5-0 out of 5 stars Okay, now we're talking!
The second I read that she also duct-taped her twin boys' diapers on, I knew this woman was speaking my language.HONEY, she was saying, YOU ME, WE SAME.And, as I tell my husband constantly, it's always nice to hear survival stories from twinmamas of older twins.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect helper when you need it most!
Our daughter has just turned three and wow, what happened? We feel like we have tried everything for discipline from time out to consequences and even the "S" word. Nothing really works. My friend recommended this book and it really does help. It's not the end all and be all of all books but it reminds you to think on their level and gives you good ideas for when you are faced with those very tough moments. I must say they suggest a positive time out, which I thought was CRAZY but figured I have tried everything else so why not? It really does work and continues to work. The best part is that I make it her choice and most times don't even have to get mad. I simply say, if you are going to behave that way (explaining the bad behavor, i.e. not playing nicely) please go to your time out corner until you are ready to come back and play nicely and sometimes she goes running in there crying (and then will return letting me know she is done and ready to play nicely)and sometimes she'll stop and think a moment and say, I don't need time out I can play nicely now. It's amazing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great advice, but have support
Dealing with preschoolers, as any parent will tell you, is a challenge. How do you deal with this little being, that is both independent and dependent, at the same time?Nelsen, et al, have provided a common sense approach to raising preschoolers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Best guidance for a lost parent
WOW!! My 4 year old has been pushing me to the limits and all I kept thinking was that I was failing. This book has put so much into perspective for me and has given suggestions on how to handle situations. I don't yell as much and I don't get angry either. I have a better understanding of my daughter's mindset and it has helped with my 17 month old too!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Skeptic turned to fan
I have to admit that I very nearly didn't buy this book.I found Babywise to be overly harsh, or at least it seemed to be at the time.I bought Toddlerwise, however, and was really impressed.First of all, let me say that my son is exactly two years old. With that in mind, he is at the middle to older end of the Toddlerwise spectrum. The thing is, as a parent, I was doing a lot of what Toddlerwise recommends before I bought the book. The book just filled in some BIG gaps for me.The first time I tried roomtime my son "read" to himself in his room for 20 minutes while I actually cleaned one of our bathrooms without once having to "yell" at him to stay away from the cleaning supplies. Also looking him in the eye when correcting him and expecting a response really helps us both.He is learning and I feel like I am actually getting through.I couldn't be more pleased!

1-0 out of 5 stars Loved Babywise, but this is horrible!
I really got a lot out of Babywise - my daughter was sleeping through the nite at 5 weeks. And now that she's almost 14 months, I thought it natural to buy Toddlerwise.Even after reading the negative reviews, I still wanted to read the book to make my own judgment. But the only new information I learned was in one chapter that's not even written by Ezzo. And I got nothing out of that chapter - maybe some parents would be able to tell their toddler to sit on a blanket and play with a specific toy ("Provide a few toys but instruct your toddler to stay on the blanket until Mommy says its time to get off." p.45), but my daughter wouldn't be able to sit still for a minute! And I feel it's criminal to restrict any child to a blanket for a set time with a timer - let alone a toddler!I'm all for structure and routine, and we have a fairly structured day at home. But the sample daily routine that is offered seems so micro-managed, I'm not sure how any parent would have time to do anything else but manage their child's playtime! Here's the example from p.61 (paraphrased):
2-0 out of 5 stars This is a book about behaviour management
This book has some great common-sense advice on the behaviour-management aspect of parenting. It emphasizes the use of routine to help your child understand boundaries (which in turn are set from your beliefs and goals in parenting), which I've found very helpful.
