4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
It's clearly important to know what kind of food we eat. If you keep eating fast food, the author explains you will gain weight easily and it will be dangerous for your health.
5-0 out of 5 stars A pretty informative, balanced book
I got this book to be fair - I knew Peter Singer had a reputation as being on the fringe philosophy-wise, but not much more than that. I was intrigued by the title and had already read Fast Food Nation. So I read the book because I felt it was important to do so even if I disagreed with the writer. Well, I am glad I read the book and I plan to make changes based on the information I received from it. I plan to investigate for myself more. I was always happy with Wal-Mart's low food prices but I can see where much of the true cost is passed on to employees, the community, and the environment. If that sentence doesn't make sense to you - READ THE BOOK. Singer is evidently a vegetarian, but this book does not tell you to become one. Instead, he lays out several different types of consumers and shows you how to decide where YOU fall in the spectrum. The aim is to get you to THINK AND ASK QUESTIONS. And hey, if you want a big ole burger on a bun - he says it's your business. But he wants us to really understand what that burger MEANS.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must-read for anyone who eats

5-0 out of 5 stars Steps to peace, joy, and love in every home.
Raising Respectful Children becomes more of a challenge each day as we the Baby Boomers have raised a generation of children without a high moral standard or appropriate social skills.Jill Rigby's book has given us the opportunity to make a difference in children today by providing a well developed manual to teach respect. There is an extra benefit to her work in that as adults we can all benefit personally when we apply the lessons in our own lives.I'm giving this book to all of my friends with young children and grandparents.
5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL BOOK!
I read this book in one sitting and have constantly referred to pages I have earmarked for guidance. It is practical and helps parents be better parents and the end result is better children. We all have seen how disrespectful the majority of kids are today and with Ms. Rigby's book, I think we can all benefit from this and help our kids become responsible, delightful adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Parenting
This is a practical guide for any parent who is concerned about raising children in our post modern culture. The book is full of wisdom that was common knowlege in prior generations but has to be taught to parents today. It is sad how our culture has degenerated and books like this are necessary today. This book could be the start of a cultural revolution. Who knows, maybe the US could become a civil society again. ... Read more

I LOVE Dr. Laura and although I don't have children, I bought this book for a friend of mine that does and is having some difficulty with them. She has read the book 3 times and there is definitely a noticable difference in both my friend and her children's behaviour now.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Laura and Stupid parents
Right on again, Dr. Laura! She isn't afraid of just saying it like it is!We have kids, give them to someone else to rear, and then wonder what has happened to our society? She just levels with parents in the most ACCURATE and DIRECT way. Go Dr. Laura!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Psychology is right on!!!!
Dr. Laura was right on! She is correct in saying that children without guidance and boundries have lower self-esteem and experience depression more often. She is also correct in saying that children need to be corrected- spanked. The studies that some on here proport that damage children's self-esteem do not understand how skewed the data is. Many of the so called researchers have included spanking with those who slap, punch, kick, verbally abuse, and even whip their children with metal objects and wooden paddles. For those who have taken a statistics course or research methods course know how skewed this data is. Dr. Laura is going against the grain of society and saying there is a right and wrong and that we are not animals merely here on earth to follow our instincts and live to ourselves. She calls mothers, fathers, and parents to return to a society where people care and our selfless. This book gives great insight into the feminist movement and how socity is taking a turn for the worst!! ... Read more

Editorial Review

When it comes to the Ten Commandments, many theologians and spiritual leaders agree: the classic golden rules remain the best guiding principles available. Syndicated radio psychologist Dr. Laura Schlessinger utilizes these sacred Commandments to speak from her favorite pulpit of "do the right thing" therapy. Fans of Dr. Laura delight in her uncanny skill for zeroing in on the moral indiscretions and confusion at the core of most people's problems. With the Ten Commandments to back her up, Dr. Laura offers readers a day-to-day context for making healthy, loving, and morally correct choices. (So hopefully they can avoid the emotional pickles that her call-in guests frequently find themselves in.)Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Forget about it
You're going to take moral advice from a degenerate gambler?
5-0 out of 5 stars In praise of virtue
A book on virtue is quite important in an age that has little time for it.Indeed, both public and private, is becoming a rarity today. Indeed, vice, not virtue, seems to be in the ascendancy. Old fashioned virtues like faithfulness, loyalty and purity are scoffed at today, while vices like selfishness and greed seem to be promoted at every turn.
2-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
Bennett has little if any understanding of children, myths, fables and fairy tales. In this book he tries to bludgeon children into "being good" (his version of it) by terrorizing them. That's not how stories for children work. Some of the stories here are butchered; others are just plain bad. You'd be a lot better off by going to the original stories, and avoiding this collection, which is only useful for a door-stop. Bennett wisely avoids stories about his substantial failings -- slot machines, gluttony, smoking, booze. Hypocrisy, thy name is Bill Bennett. ... Read more

This one is a keeper. I find it inspiring and insightful ~~ and not condemning ~~ just helpful. It is encouraging and wonderfully short so if you're busy and don't have a lot of time to read it, it's perfect for you. It is also a book that you can keep in your library as your kids grow older and then pass it onto them when they start raising their own children.

I discovered Nolte's parenting books from a glowing review in the Orlando Sentinel.I'd always loved her poem that evolved into these books.Whenever I see a parent ridiculing a child or shaming them, I wish they knew the poem.

This is an interesting and useful book.It provides a wide range of activities to use with children to help them learn about themselves and understanding others. Many of the activities offer ways to accommodate for older or younger audiences, and some are specific to ages. The range of topics addressed is rather inclusive, and the activities are designed to appeal to all types of learners (visual, auditory, kinesthetic). The activities offer a creative approach to each topic, and are nice springboards for deeper discussions.I am certain this book will be utilized both in my home and in my classroom!

"Building Moral Intelligence" by Dr. Michele Borba is a book that every parent should read and own. In a world where there are so many negative influences on the internet, in the media, T.V. shows, magazines etc. many parents do not even realize the amount of immoral influences that our children are witnessing every single day.As parents, it is up to us to teach our children the importance of good character. We need to teach them about the seven essential virtues as Dr. Borba explains in her book! 5-0 out of 5 stars All Diamonds In The Rough Need Polishing
This book is one of the gems -- a diamond in the rough -- on parenting. Written in simple language, it's the "basic course" on "HOW TO RAISE KIDS WITH SOLID CHARACTER, STRONG MINDS, AND CARING HEARTS". So read, use, and understand. Hmm. Understand? What do you do when the kids ask, "WHY?"! Hmm. You'll need a book that makes you understand -- in simple language -- the philosophy of WHY character counts, of right and wrong, of good and evil, of moral and immoral, and of ethical and unethical. The school that exists to teach the "advanced course" in "HOW TO RAISE KIDS WITH SOLID CHARACTER, STRONG, MINDS, AND CARING HEARTS" is West Point. The only book that explains the philosophy behind all the "WHYS" -- in simple language -- is the book titled "WEST POINT", by Norman Thomas Remick. It's THE companion book for all how-to books and "courses", basic or advanced, on parenting and character. It will become kind of an encyclopedia that you can refer to for explaining "WHY?" to your kids. And it will give Borba's diamond in the rough its required polish.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not strategies, no focus
Values Clarification (first edition 1972) by S.B. Simon, L.W. Howe & H. Kirschenbaum offers 76 different and separate exercises (not strategies as the authors call them) to help you clarify your values. The related and partially overlapping book In Search of Values (1993) by S.B. Simon offers 31 such exercises. Not all exercises will be equally appealing and useful to the reader. The authors do not help the reader tie the results of the separate exercises together in a straightforward and sensible manner. Better books on values are What Matters Most (2000) by Hyrum W. Smith, Lasting Change (1997) by Rob Lebow & William L. Simon, and Managing by Values (1997) by Ken Blanchard & Michael O'Connor. They offer more focused and coherent approaches to clarifying personal and group/organizational values.

This is a great book.I actually read it long ago and remembered it until now.The book has some really thought provoking questions in it for us all to consider. One problem: some of the language and terms are a bit old fashioned as the revision didn't bring it up to date for the millenium reader; but I recommend it anyway!

Editorial Review

"Virtue is too often neglected, if not scorned or ridiculed as old-fashioned, confining, unenlightened," laments author Gordon Hinckley, a 90-year-old ordained leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Even as he enumerates all of America's social ills (including $482 billion a year spent on gambling, rampant child neglect and abuse, school massacres, a pervasive deterioration of values) Hinckley believes there is a remedy. Chapter by chapter Hinckley presents 10 old-fashioned virtues that will return America to the glory envisioned by its founding fathers. These virtues include Love, Honesty, Morality, Civility, Learning, Forgiveness, Thrift and Industry, Gratitude, Optimism, and Faith.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A vastly important work that each person should read at least once
If you are reading this review, you should know that I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and I believe Gordon B. Hinckley to be God's chosen prophet on the earth. I sustain him as a prophet, seer, and revelator, and I believe he is a mouthpiece through which our Heavenly Father gives us, his children, direction and instruction.
5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
Gordon B. Hinckley is so Wise!! this is an excellent book, if you deny that, you obviously havent even touched the book. It is great for anyone, it dosent even get into religion very much, its all about the world we live in today if you try to argue about Hinckley's views, then you obviously are not very "intelligent" whether you believe he is a prophet or not is irrelevant when it comes to this book, it is the most inspirational book and message this generation has ever seen!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Racist Garbage
This book twists facts and constantly points the finger at the 'massa' letting down the poor. White men are said to be in a position of leadership out of 'accident of birth'. She tells us not to make, snicker, of stand for racial jokes. Then in the next chapter she tells one of her own in support of black pride. This book is absolutely riddled with contradictions. She feels it is the responsibility of you and I, through government to pay enough taxes so that there are no poor families in America. She writes that one should not feel 'entitled' to anything they didnt 'sweat' and 'work for'. Then says 'we' should 'give' to the poor instead of buying more things for ourselves. This book is absolutely ridiculous. If a white man wrote a book like this it would be dismissed as racist garbage.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life
I cannot express in words the power of this wonderful book.I am an adult who was not raised with any values that could sustain me through all the messages of the outside world:Look beautiful, make money, drive fancy cars, clothes make the person; all the hype the media blasts at you everyday.I picked up this book and for the first time in my life, I felt grounded. I internalized the values in this book and for the first time in my life, I felt peace. All the distractions of the outside world could no longer effect me. The book changed my life.

Drawing from inspirational experiences from her own childhood, Dr. Edelman talks to (not at) her own children, urging them, in whatever occupation they may choose, to serve the community at large. This is also a book for adults (parents, educators, and religious and community leaders) to read, to live a life of principles and a desire to somehow make the world a better place - in short, to serve as the strong, positive role model that so many of our children have had to do without.Read more

I ordered this book after reading the rave reviews and the who's who of public school using this format.Nowhere is it advertised or even mentioned that this is a Christian book, espousing Christian dogma and assumptions.I'm surprised this is acceptable for use by Government funded public schools.Furthermore, there is a lot of non-scientific rhetoric in the book that eschews logical debate and exposition.I'm very disappointed and consider this to be false advertising.
5-0 out of 5 stars Works For A Mom Of 8
I have 8 kids, ages 1 though 18.I read this book 6 years ago when I was dealing with 2 year old twins and found it to be very helpful. Since then I have recommended it to many people.Anything that can help mom stay calm and sane when dealing with challenging behaviors is a real winner in my book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Please read this book!
I wish this book would be required reading for every school administrator, teacher, and parent.I have been a public school educator for 25 years.I am also a parent and a grandparent.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Timely
This book comes at a critical time in our society- it has wonderful ideas and strategies that can be readily applied to school settings- forming partnerships with parents and teachers is especially helpful!

1-0 out of 5 stars Sadly, it doesn't matter to the author
As the title indicates, character does indeed matter. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to matter to the author. For example, according to the author, virtues "define what it means to be human." If he had done his homework, he would have seen that this is demonstrably untrue. As C.S. Lewis pointed out, we call gravity a "law" because we observe that it always happens. Natural laws are observations of what nature does. Virtues, however, are just the opposite. We don't call them virtues because we observe that people always practice them. On the contrary, virtues are necessary because they go against our nature. Virtues don't "define" humanity; they transcend natural human tendencies.

5-0 out of 5 stars i recommend strongly !
i'm not done with this book yet, but i am already delighted about how the author is making his point !
5-0 out of 5 stars as good as it gets in the personal growth area
This book goes to the lengths necessary to teach you how to be so outrageously honest in all of your communications that you life changes before your very eyes. Brad is the world's best authority on cleaning up your "act" that we all think we must do from childhood. Be nice, be kind and be dishonest and never be clear with anyone or the world about what you think, what you do, or what you feel would not be fantastic for everyone to hear. Communication is a joke unless you adopt the principles in this book and Brad does it better than all the rest!

1-0 out of 5 stars Puh-lease!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a book that teaches sex based on the Bible!
I have been looking for help on how to raise my 2 very young children knowing that sex is wonderful when it comes at the right time.RIGHT being the operative word. I found the scriptural references to be solid in their interpretation, and their knowledge about how sex fits in earthly life to be just what we parents need. They suggest teaching children about their sexuality as early as possible so as to avoid embarrasing "talks" that come when it's too late (Most kids learn about sex in school before they learn from their parents). I especially liked their assertations that any kind of sexual activity that deviates from what God has set forth is wrong. IE: homosexuality, sex before marriage, etc. Every type of Christian, Jew or other religious person would be well advised to use this book in teaching their children how their bodies are sacred, special, and sexual. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I was the man...
As I was seeking to recover from sexual addiction/bondage to pornography, this book showed me myself in the mirror and what had happened in my relationship with my wife and family over the years. The chapter on physical affects was an eye opener. This book helped me move from denial to recovery and four years later I am grateful to the author, God, 12-Step Recovery, and Battleplan Ministries for helping me find my way out of bondage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative & Encouraging
This subject matter is not one that is easily talked about or readily available. We are programmed to think that pornography is one of those things that define men, the old boys will be boys mentality. But Laurie Hall debunks all of that in a very candid and revealing look at the devastation of pornography. She reveals how it robbed her and her husband of a healthy marriage and encourages the reader that there is hope as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the women who think they're alone.
This book was awesome, it didn't tell me what to do in my situation, but it certainly helped me to know I wasn't the only one suffering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
As one who's been hiring and firing in the public and private sector for almost 40 years, I can tell you this book is a gift we ought to give every staffer. It's basically a highly readable workbook, a tool for understanding the true nature of human character and how to develop it. The reader will be greatly impacted if the material is treated as a personal devotional guide, reading it slowly, meditatively, contemplatively. Guinness touches the very essence of the subject. Who we are "when no one sees" is who we truly are.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great teaser for in-depth character studies
This book is another in a long line of books that continue to feed my appetite for serious discussion on the movers and shakers of history. I would say that this book is like a wonderful appetizer to vital historical and philosophical studies. It's perfect for a small group and likely to cause some heated debate. It definitely causes reflection on the differences between cultural Chrisitanity and Christianity through conviction. In a climate where working life and decisions therein are a sort of stage and life behind that curtain is accepted as a completely different arena of actions and ideas, thisboo
