3-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource but Not Nearly as Good as Baby Bargains
I got this book with "Baby Bargains" and found myself ditching this one almost the entire time I was coming up with my registry. That's not to say that the book is no good. I did use it on occasion to confirm that the items suggested in Baby Bargains were actually considered safe. But for a first time parent, it tells you the ratings of different brands, but doesn't actually say "buy this one", which Baby Bargains does. So, if you want information on the safety and performance of different brands, I highly recommend this book. But if you want someone to tell you what to buy, try another book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed
This book won't help you at all.I don't even want to give it a star.I would recommend The lilaguide: Baby Gear Guide and Baby Bargains.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as useful as Baby Bargains or Girlfriend's Guide to Baby Gear
Main Pro: an additional unbiased source of information in an area where there is not nearly enough

5-0 out of 5 stars A Volcano in My Tummy
It was not what I thought. I thought it was a book to read to kids, instead it is a WONDERFUL workbook with ideas, activities, etc. Definately for teachers but very useful even for this grandma!

5-0 out of 5 stars so helpful
I am an Elementary School Counselor.I got this book to help me put together small groups for some of my students. The book is wonderful. It is full of great and effective ideas.I bought many resources in the past, and this is by far the best one to help children understand and work through anger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right Combination for Anger and Anxiety
I have been working this past year on all areas of helping my child and myself learn to manage anger, stress, anxiety and frustration.I am lucky to be working with a teacher that is willing to explore and take advice from authors like Elaine Whitehouse. This book takes the chaos out of anger. Adults and children learn how to recognize and deal with and express normal feelings of anger. This, coupled with the anxiety and anger management techniques from Lori Lite's "Children's Awareness Curriculum" and "Indigo Dreams" CD have been just the right combination for me and my child. The more we as a community are exposed to these books and concepts the quicker we will have a peaceful, communicative society able to resolve conflict before the volcano errupts. This should be a required class for all children and adults. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to help your child on speech problems
This is a great resource for parents who are trying to figure out if their children have some sort of language problem. The author does an excellent job by naming every different problem and defining very clearly each concept. It is also good to find resources to help your child in case you do not have insurance that can cover your child's speech therapy. The cases presented are also very good since some of them can apply to your real life situation. If you are looking for a great tool to confirm language issues, you have it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great info and very easy to read!
I found this book to be an excellent and comprehensive guide. My daughter has a speech and language problem, but until reading this book I didn't realize how her listening problems were related. I showed the book to her teacher and we able to get an audiologist who could diagnose her auditory processing problem. Now she is getting the right help, and I will be eternally grateful to this author for writing this fabulous book. I wish I had read this when she was younger because perhaps I would have known what to look for. The symptoms are subtle in the younger child and become a little more obvious once they are trying to function in a classroom. I highly recommend this book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS BOOK!!!!
I couldn't disagree more with the previous review. I found this book to be totally reassuring. In fact, over and over it tells the parent it is not your fault. It lists ways you can help your child, but doesn't ever say you caused the problem.I have a 6 year old son with a speech and language problem, including apraxia at one time. There IS information about it in the 2001 edition. I wonder if she has the most recent edition? I found the book to be easy to read and understand. It was much more helpful than the other books I have read or purchased on this topic. It was recommended to me by my sister, who is the head of a major pediatric speech pathology clinic. She said it was technically the most accurate book on the topic out there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It has it all
When I had my first child, I used to carry along this book even for weekend excursions. I suggest that you read the part about First Aid first and the rest of the book when the need arises. The glossary at the back is a life saver until you get to the pediatrician. Excellent book. If you are going to buy only one book about your newly born child, this ought to be the one.
1-0 out of 5 stars How to transform your son into a neurotic
I tried to read this trash-book, in a edition translated to the portuguese, here in Brazil, about twenty years ago. This book has many informations, who are correct, but these same correct informations are also available on other books. And any of these books is smaller, concise, correct and cheaper than this trash-book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for parents
Dr. Spock's folksy manner of writing and inherent trust in the abilities of parents make this book essential reading for the first-time parent. The book hits on all childhood stages from pre-birth through the teenage years, so it does gloss over many specific issues, but it manages to cover the major events of growing up and how parents should expect and prepare for them.

Editorial Review

Every parent has nightmares about that moment when their child isrefused a request (I want a candy bar, Mommy! Not today, Johnny.) and inresponse, he falls to the ground, screams, and thrashes about--all in a verypublic place. Mortified by this tantrum, Mommy might be tempted to give in, buythe candy bar, end the embarrassing moment, and ultimately behave in a way thattells Johnny tantrums work. 5-0 out of 5 stars saw results in days
I really enjoyed this book and was able to see changes in the behavior of my 3 year old within days of implementing the information in this book. I feel like I'm much more positive and feel better about my parenting. Also after a month of "positive parenting" I am confident that my son will behave when my hands are full in public :) (at least most of the time). Even my sceptical husband has come around after seeing such quick results. Definately Recommended!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
This book is great! I found it easy to read, entertaining, and useful. Severe writes with a refreshing style. He gives great examples of problems and then tells you how to solve them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
Some real life tear jerker stories, amazing insight into the abilities of children and how to get them to show it.I have witnessed three children go through the same teacher's class. They all loved school until they survived her grade. What a shame that school is now a downer for them.If all teachers would make just a smidget of this guys efforts maybe the world would be a different place.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Mom's Perspective
I love this little guide. It's so beautifully written and helps me return to the the really important aspects of parenting:honoring each child's individuality and letting go of control.I read one or two passages each morning to remind me that I have a choice in how I interact with my children. This little guide is a must have if you feel the world is spinning a little too fast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is a perfect book for new parents. You don't need to have a lot of time in one chunk, since it's a compilation of thoughtful advice pieces. These are very insightful and can give new meaning every time they're read.I give them to all new parents I know and they rave!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Dark Side of Understanding Human Relations...
Wow! That's what I have to say about this book, after having been raised in the Dale Carnegie "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and Maxwell's "21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership" School of human relations. That school of thought prescribes that you treat others with respect and dignity, expect the best of others, protect others, and lead through positive example.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for victims!
Most the reviews on this site say things like "now I know all those mean people suck and I am a poor victim - thanks Jay" I would, however, like to thank the author of this book for pointing out that I am mean. Sure other people in my life are mean to me and control me, but I already knew that now didn't I. What this book taught me is that meaness is a circle; and I am in it constantly. I have to be the change I want to see in others. To meet mean with mean is well... just a nasty situation. So thank you Jay for giving me something to consider before making the choice to invalidate others. I can now change the world, because I can recongize and change me and my behavior.
4-0 out of 5 stars A nice refresher
It is interesting to read Mr. Carter's review of his own book.At the risk of seeming a mind reader, he seems a little defensive, almost apologetic, about his work.He need not be.Those of us who have "been there" will understand this book, and we will also recognize the constant second-guessing of ourselvesand our thoughts we all do.We have, after all, been told for years (some of us throughout our lifetimes) that we are just too sensitive -- we just can't take a joke.Even after several best-sellers, perhaps Mr. Carter is still looking over his shoulder, wondering if he has been too hard on the ghosts of his past. That's oddly comforting to me, in only my third real month of "recovery."It's a reminder that our experiences are real, even though they "never hit me," as I am so often reminded by those who don't understand.Mr. Carter's book lacks the depth and detail of similar books, and I am still in the stage where I'd like a little more eye-poking (Mr. Carter is, if anything, too kind to those who hurt), but the short chapters and quick "lessons" are a good refresher for those days we witnesses need a postive boost -- those days when our abusers (and that's what they are, let's not pull punches) are scratching at our door begging for more. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Maverick is the new word for selfish?
Despite overwhelming evidence that boys without fathers are at a disadvantage, the single mother movement is only too happy to say the opposite. Distinction: single mothers through their own initaited divorce are the guilty ones here when parental alienation of the father is their doing. Single mothers by adoption, widowhood, reproductive technology, an accidental pregnancy that a woman took responsibility for doesn't apply here. This is a complex issue but one that begs the question - what truly is in the best interests of the child? Leaving a marriage for reasons other than (A) abuse, (B) life threatening circumstances, (C) a mentally ill spouse, (D) crimminal behavior ... is not a license to demand kudos for bravado. Unless a single mother was deserted by her husband, then raising her son alone, without a willing father, is just plain selfish.

3-0 out of 5 stars The men seem threatened!
First off, most of the bad reviews here seem to have been written by many ego-driven men who feel threatened that women might not need them in order to live and raise children. That's a shame, but that's how your typical het male reacts to a book like this.Pay no attention to the men behind the curtain. If they actually made intelligent comments REGARDING THE BOOK ITSELF, that would be a different story. But I bet NONE of them actually even read it.
1-0 out of 5 stars "Without men" huh?
I wonder how many women who claim to raise children "without" men are actually receiving child support, even as they deny the man access to his child?Certainly not all women without active male partners would do this, but it is incredibly common.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Joy Recharge
The first three chapters alone are well worth the price.Dive in with an open mind.I usual wince when authors are out to save the world (the last statement in Chapter 1 is "The healing of ourselves, of each other, of our children, and of society begins one bond at a time.") but I put that aside and really was moved by the view the author gives.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Mom can you get out that yellow book again...."
is something I hear just about every day.My six and three year old love - absolutely love - the finger plays and songs from this book. The negative, frightening themes from nursery rhymes are removed and replaced with loving positive words and images.
1-0 out of 5 stars Too Specific
I was disappointed in this book.It is geared more toward adoptive and foster care families rather than others who are looking for some fun ideas to share with their family.I only got one or two workable ideas out of this book. For people looking for simple fun things to do everyday and on special days, I would definitely suggest instead "The Book of New Family Traditions" by Meg Cox. That book has a lot wonderful ideas about celebrating milestones and theme nights and funny things to do and serious things too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What is a man?
That is the key question for men born and raised under the infuence of a society burdened by political correctness and absent fathers. The most disturbing askers of this questionare young males themselves, who are receiveing so many inputs from so many unreliable sources.Robert Lewis has not only answered the question for himself and his sons, but provides a model based on the most noble parts of the mideval concept of knighthood. His answers are compelling, soundly based in Christianity, and illustrated with many "how to" methods that have worked for him and others. While the book is targeted at fathers with juvenile sons, it has meaning for all of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Raising Boys Into Men of Honor
By far, my greatest joy in life is being "Daddy" to my toddler son.I take that responsibility very seriously, and am constantly looking for ways and times to refine my performance in that critical role.Robert Lewis' excellent book has given me some different and exciting perspectives on my dad role and responsibilities that can and should be contemplated by dads everywhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT ideal for all ages
I am an adult and bought this book thinking it would be useful to me.In my opinion, the advice was OVERLY simplistic. For instance, if you are the annoying type person, stop doing annoying things to people. The advice wasn't this simple, but it was along that line.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to read with your kids!
My 6 year old son and I read this book together. It was very helpful to him.The book is written in "kid friendly" stories. They are easy to understand and make it easy for the parents to explain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish my parents had this when I was a kid
As a shy child who had troubles making friends, this book would have been enormously helpful. I bought it because I realized my daughter was having the same problems I used to have, and I felt helpless to know what to tell her to help her. I didn't want her to suffer as I had, but I wasn't exactly qualified to tell another person how to make friends! I am so glad I got this book. It is full of practical, detailed advice on what you can do to teach your child social skills. I'm finding it useful too! I would recommend it whole-heartedly to anyone who is in the same situation I was in. ... Read more

This 3rd edition is now available on Amazon with an ISBN number of 0935111212.The part of SOS that I like best is the `Index of Solutions to 46 Behavior Problems.'Parents are busy people and it's easy to find a section dealing with a particular behavior problem such as tantrums without reading the whole book.I have used most of the SOS solutions in my elementary classroom, with my two sons, and with preschoolers when I taught preschool. These methods work!
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I am a bit partial, as I had DR.Clark for classes, but this book is wonderful. Not having children at the time I first read it, I thought it was a little much. Now I have two of my own and I refer back to it often! ... Read more

Jon Kabbot Zin has the unbelievable ease of describing how to change your entire self in a reading. If you follow his perfect translation of Zen and Buddhism you can apply immediately to everyday life. I owe him a great thank you for saving my self!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all parents, teachers and people in relationships!
This book changed my life and the way I parent. I just wish I had read it when my kids were younger...but it's never to late to start parenting the right way!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure!
This title is a favorite of many members in my spiritual homeschooling support group. I've discovered it late, but I am grateful to have found it. Every word resonates with calm encouragement and reminds parents what we can strive for, even if it feels impossible at the moment. As the authors put it: "Mindful parenting calls us to wake up to the possibilities".The possibilities in parenting are wonderful blessings without measure. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Should be illegal
This book caused a lot of pain and suffering in my family because of its extremism. I noticed when I quietly threw it out (thankfully without anybody noticing) that my parents started being kinder and peace (slowly) returned to our household. Its tactics push the envelope of abuse and this dangerous work does not belong in any home that believes in kindness or love. It promotes a "might makes right" view and argues that parents are automatically right because of their age, absolutely. And another thing I'd like to point out is, who ever heard of "ODD"? It sounds to me like just another made-up 'disorder' that is actually just kids being kids. These are quite common and I think Ridley should be imprisoned for this. He is a con artist and his so-called 'mental disorder' is about as real as 'youthful tendency disorder'.

5-0 out of 5 stars sensible and practical suggestions
As an education professional working with parents some of whom struggle with oppositional teenagers, I found the book sane and practical. It acknowledges the possibility of some clinical depression and/or substance abuse issues that would render the strategies ineffective until the other issues are addressed, which some other books do not.It may not be "the answer", but it's a great resource for parents.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not too bad but
I thought some of the ideas in the book were good way of dealing with my son maybe when he hits his teens! But and there is always a but. My son is 8 and with O.D.D you have to always be 2 steps a head of that child when it comes to behaviors and rewards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sales Management gem
I read this book on my last business trip. The principles inside are excellent keys to motivating a sales team. However, I also have used them on my family with outstanding results. Bringing out the best in others is a book that I wish I had read years ago. Over the next few months I expect to be happier. Not just from reading this book, but applying the principles. Why, because it reaps rewards back to anyone who understands and uses the three principles. As a national sales manager, I'm recommending this to anyone who works with a sales team. Although it will be a great addition to anyones library who wants to increase positve change in people and themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding tool for motivating others to be their best.
I've read too many "self-help" and "help-others" type books to list, and this one honestly rates among one of the most useful.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it early
I love this book.I wish I'd gotten it when my son was little! It provides great information about how to teach kids with DS to read, but also has great stories of real kids and their accomplishments.I'd recommend that anybody with a DS child buy the book early (when their baby is little), and read the first few chapters. It'll inspire them, mitigate some of the worries they have about their child's future, and introduce them to the important concept that although people with DS are generally slower to develop, their learning disabilities can be mitigated by teaching them in a way that is effective for the way they think (e.g., kids with DS are visual learners), rather than the "standard" way.My four year old has actually had better success with the Love and Learning videotapes and books than the flash card approach described in the book, but the principal is pretty much the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must have
it is extremely helpful, in only 2 months my daughter at 6 years old was up to 30 site words without picture cues.(Her first attempt at actually reading) The book contains alot of helpful activities, simply spelled out in step by step directions for anyone to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
It really gives good insight into the mind of the older adopted child. It tells why conventional parenting techniques don't work on them and what does work and why. It talks about attatchment problems and finding a good therapist that has actually delt with the problems adopted children have.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
Very practical info for those raising, adopting or fosteringthese very special children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for adopted and non-adopted children
We have friends with a "hurt" child and after reading this very helpful and insightful book, I bought them a copy and am told of their increased confidence in handling the little boy. Even if only one single advice in the book helped, the parents would be very grateful.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worst Enemies/ Best FriendsBeacon Street Girls
Hi,My name is Taylor. I read Beacon Street Girls. It was a really great book. You never knew what to expect next. It was so interesting I could hardly put it down. It is a good book for any age girl. I felt like I was one of the Beacon Street Girls. I could see myself there. It is a perfect book for every girl. It has all the personalities of every girl, so anyone can relate to it. The book kept me guessing throughout the entire story. Even when I put it down I kept wondering what was going to happen next. I would highly recommend this book to any girl of any age. I know you will enjoy this and be glad you read it. I hope you will be as excited as I to read the next book and tell your friends.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as interesting as I'd hoped
I guess I was expecting something more in-depth and less instructional. I am sure this is a fine book for a parent who isn't clued into how some kids are popular and some kids have no friends at all, but I was looking for a more psychological perspective.5-0 out of 5 stars This book is important.
Alice Miller (author of The Drama of the Gifted Child and Breaking Down the Walls of Silence) has long emphasized that if we are serious about solving society's problems, we must focus on how we treat children --- as individual families and as a cultural. This book is an excellent contribution toward that end.Read more
