5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Help
I highly recommend this book to any struggling parents out there. It is an easy and quick read (which I never find anything a quick read). I think I read the whole book in about 4 hours. It is chock full of advice on everything from play to sleep routines and everything in between. I have started using the adivce she offers and have already seen a change in my 2 toddlers, 3 and 21 months, as well as the whole atmosphere of the house and I have had the book for about 2 weeks. A must read!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Discipline Tips That Work For Us
"SUPERNANNY" has discipline guidance relative to a spectrum of ages, infant through elementary school age and offers a variety of specific interventions of how to get better behavior from a child. I found Jo's advice to be easy to understand and I agree with the majority of suggested interventions especially on getting your child to sleep in his own bed at night. This book emphasizes 3 main areas to focus on: Putting an immediate stop to the undesirable or dangerous behavior in the heat of the moment (like whining, backtalk, hitting, tantrums and not listening)...Continuing to use "positive" discipline (outside the heat of the moment) by noticing and encouraging the good behaviors (like cleaning up, healthy eating, uses manners, sharing, and following a bedtime routine) and...lastly "Supernanny" stresses the importance and positive effects of adults prioritizing daily one-on-one time with each child that serves to strengthen the relationship between parent and child therby getting more cooperation from the child just because he knows he is important and understood.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
I bought this book for a friend and for my sister after watching the SuperNanny perform miracles on TV. The book is really nice and summarizes well the techniques she uses. What would be great to have as an addition would be some child psychologist's evaluation of her suggestions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The only thing has worked for this parenting book addict!!!
I have read over a dozen parenting books including Playful Parenting, Easy to love, Difficult to Discipline, Picking Your Battles, Kids, Parents and Power Struggles, P.E.T. and Unconditional Parenting just to name a few. This though is the first book parenting book, I've ever reviewed, because it's the only one that has truly helped me.
4-0 out of 5 stars 1-2-3- Magic
I found this book to be a excellent resource for learning how to control "stop" behaviors.I am not as convinced on the start behavior tactics but we are going to give it a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Raise your children correctly

4-0 out of 5 stars Good set of basics for proper discipline
This book has been really helpful. My wife and I were in a pretty regular tug-of-war with our three-year-old.We were getting to our own limits. The examples and techniques of this book made it pretty clear why we were in the jam we were in.Our son ruled the house...until we both read this book. The games came to a halt the next day.Our son was a little shocked at first and went to great lengths to try and test the limits of our authority. It was difficult at first, to say the least. But, after about two weeks of persistence on our part, we turned him around and put some very clear boundaries in place - PROBLEMS SOLVED!
5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for writing this book!
Up until reading this book I struggled with my son on a daily (if not hourly) basis. This book helped me understand my son's personality and gave me tools to react to him. It wasn't his personality that was the problem, but how I was reacting to it.We still have our moments, but they're not as often and I can handle them more effectively. We are no longer battling for hours and making life miserable for ourselves and everyone around us!I am a stay-at-home mom and because of our relationship, I considered going back to work.I once thought that he would be better off with someone else because at least he wouldn't be arguing all day.Now I am able to feel confident that it's best for him to be at home with me and learn from me and he can now do that in a positive manner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another way to look at the strong-willed child.
This book gives very good advice about managing behavior problems in difficult children. However, the concept of a "strong-willed child" is confusing because it implies a child with will power or self control. These difficult children actually have poor will power and self control. The techniques given in this book will help teach such children self control.

Editorial Review

Flexibility and tolerance are learned skills, as any parent knows if they've seen an irascible 2-year-old grow into a pleasant, thoughtful, and considerate older child. Unfortunately, for reasons that are poorly understood, a few children don't "get" this part of socialization. Years after toddler tantrums should have become an unpleasant memory, a few unlucky parents find themselves battling with sudden, inexplicable, disturbingly violent rages--along with crushing guilt about what they "did wrong." Medical experts haven't helped much: the flurry of acronyms and labels (Tourette's, ADHD, ADD, etc.) seems to proffer new discoveries about the causes of such explosions, when in fact the only new development isalternative vocabulary to describe the effects. Ross Greene, a pediatricpsychologist who also teaches at Harvard Medical School, makes a bold and humane attempt in this book to cut through the blather and speak directly to the (usually desperate) parents of explosive children. His text is long and serious, and has the advantage of covering an enormous amount of ground with nuance, detail, and sympathy, but also perhaps the disadvantage that only those parents who are not chronically tired and time-deprived are likely to get through the entire book. Quoted dialogue from actual sessions with parents and children is interspersed with analysis that is always oriented toward understanding the origins of "meltdowns" and developing workable strategies for avoidance. Although pharmacological treatment is not the book's focus, there is a chapter on drug therapies. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read if you work w/ a difficult child
This well-organized, brilliantly thought-out book gives educators and parents a completely different way of thinking about how we lead all children but particularly difficult, abused, angry children. In short order it provides specific tools together with examples of what we can do to create a more peaceful, flexible child who can function successfully in the world and get along with others. The corresponding web site is extremely valuable in conjunction w/ this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Results-when nothing else has worked!
Thank you Dr. Greene, as reading this book has been more helpful to helping me understand my daughter, and has given us more tangible results than any other medication or therapy that we have tried. Things are not completely normal, but after instituting the behavior plan, they are MUCH BETTER. Every child is different, but in our specific case, the information that Dr. Greene presents makes so much sense, and his basket approach has really helped us avoid rages. This is a must read for parents of children diagnosed with Reactive Attachment disorder, Bipolar, ODD, or ADHD. I highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Explosive Child? The Real Solution May Surprise You!
Frustrated by my son's age-inappropriate temper tantrums, I desperately searched for solutions. [He'd be set off by little things like making a mistake coloring and would rage for 1/2 hour or more ... still at age 6! Maybe this is understandable for a 2 year old, but there was something wrong here...] I approached it psychologically, certain that I somehow wasn't handling him properly. However, he just seemed out of control. No matter how I approached his anger, I couldn't make any significant changes. I purchased this book, but it didn't help me much, as I'd already tried so many behavioral approaches. I finally researched the Feingold Program (you can Google it) after observing that his biggest tantrums came immediately after eating foods with red food coloring. The Feingold Program primarily removes artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives from children's food and environment (yes, even those hand-stamps after gym class can have an effect!), and it's been around since the '70s. A family friend used it successfully for her 2 boys during that time, so I knew at least one success story. I bought the materials and dove in. Guess what -- no more tantrums! My boy is a changed person, and I couldn't be happier. Please give this diet a try -- you may be amazed! It's a bit more work for me when shopping or cooking, but my life is so much easier in every other way because I'm not dealing with a raging kid all the time. He and his little sister (who's 3 and is also on the diet now; she doesn't seem as sensitive as he is, but she definitely benefits also) now play nicely most of the time, freeing up hours of my day. I truly believe that the question is NOT "Will this help my child?" ... the question is "How much will this help my child?" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars .So far, so interesting
I love the philospohy behind this book, but Dr. Marshall goes one step further and adds the golden element of classroom testing. When he tells me I will need to use a particular strategy with about 2 % of my students, I feel confidence that this material has truly been tested in real situations.Part of the problem with many discipline programs that aim to address classroom management without rewards, tokens, and such is they often talk down to teachers for using token systems, but offer only theories and clinical data as proof without workable ideas for in the classroom.I am trying out Dr. Marshall's program and will see how far it takes me, but after the first two introductory lessons on the ABCD heirarchy, this weird quiet settled into my room, like the idea of democracy had just sunk into my students heads.Very heady stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars No More Class Store or Missed Recess
I purchased this book after an extremely challenging year of behavior problems in first grade. As a teacher who had previous success using rewards (giving plastic money that could be redeemed in a class store) and punishment (taking away recess time), this new class had so many problems that nothing seemed to work! During the summer, I read everything on behavior management I could find in preparation for my new third grade class and found this book while searching the web. Needless to say, this past year was the best year of teaching I've had in my short career of five years. Using the daily class meetings--the students' favorite part of the day--to solve problems and asking disruptive students to tell me "their level," I found that most problems went away quickly and students didn't get resentful of me because they had to reflect on how they were acting. Using the agenda for students to write down issues that bothered them was a great way to deal with tattling. I also linked the system with students who would forget homework. Rather than punish them, I would give them the Level 1 Essay to reflect on why they forgot their homework and what they could try so they could remember it. It worked! I also recommend buying "Positive Discipline in the Classroom" (Nelson) as a companion to this book if you want more step-by-step instructions for the classroom meeting. It picks up where Dr. Marshall's book leaves off regarding class meetings, especially on how to introduce it at the beginning of the year. One more thing: parents LOVE this system and will love you for using it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Civilized Alternative
Marshall makes a compelling case for giving children tools to evaluate their own behavioral options and make positive choices.I am looking forward to empowering my kindergarteners to be their best selves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide
I really enjoy using this reference guide to parenting. It helped me learn new parenting skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Toddler Resource
This is the best toddler discipling resource i have seen. Most of the books that offer true discipline tips and advice are for older kids, and the ones for toddlers offer ways to keep from needing to use discipline, but if you're in a situation where you need to- they are no help. As a mom of a very active 2 and a half year old boy i found it priceless! It truly is like advice from an older neighbor who has been there!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars practical tips and funny stories
This is a great resource that should be on every parents' shelf! It offers down-to-earth, sensible tips for dealing with a multitude of common parenting dilemmas, but my favorite parts are the funny stories.Being a parent is a hard job, but it's easier if we keep a sense of humor and relish the ridiculous situations that inevitably occur with kids. It's also reassuring to know that the authors have 'been there!'I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parenting the Strong Willed Child
Book is in great shape and shipped immediately!
5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is a Lifesaver!
Some people think they can just let their kids do whatever and they'll just naturally be angels. Attachment Parenting is the term for that. Well, I tried that and ended up with kids that had the attitude "I can do whatever and get away with it." In other words, my kids ended up being, I hate to say it, spoiled! I checked this book out at the library and read it word-for-word and I cannot begin to tell you how much this book has changed my life. I don't say that lightly. My family has done a 180! All because of this book. This book has literally since Day 1 transformed me into a better mother, better wife, and better friend. You think the tips you get out of here will just make your kid better, no, it makes YOU BETTER! It gives excellent tips on how to communicate with your child, how to make yourself more patient when you feel like you are about to lose it, and how to improve your relationships overall. I feel like this is a more loving family. I am definitely going to go out and buy this book! I can't thank Rex and Nicholas enough. They are parents themselves and they really know kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amust!
Any parent with a strong-willed child really should read this.It shows you that you can help your child direct their actions. It gives hope -not to mention, suggestions that do work!

3-0 out of 5 stars Really just okay...and a little disappointing
I believe in many attachment parenting principles, so I ordered this book once my child reached the appropriate age for discipline.I have to say I was more than just a little disappointed with this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars I love Dr Sears but only liked this book
I am a huge believer in attachment parenting, but found this book to be a dollar short and way to late. I bought it when my son was 18 months old and reading it felt like I had already made tons of mistakes that wern't reversable as a parent. This book may be more helpful for "parents-to-be" or brand new parents. I also felt like some of the expectations were a little high... all in all I thought that the ideas and the general guidlines were good, just not many examples to help.

2-0 out of 5 stars a working mom
Dr Sears completely ignores the HUGE population of working mothers! The book goes on and on and on about attachment parenting and how you should allow your child to disattach from you and not the other way around....well, the majority of the mother's in this world do not have this choice!Furthermore, he made me feel as though I was a selfish mother for not carrying my daughter on my hip for the first year of her life.My daughter is very attached to me and we have a very close relationship....yet I started back at work full time when she was 8 weeks old.I feel that Dr Sears only addressing those mothers that stay at home full time and even then he cautions about leaving your child!Easy for him to say!!!! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Violence Begets Violence
Dobson has it wrong. Children's susceptibility to God and the attributes of God has to do with rearing them with the love of God in their hearts from the beginning, praying and relying on God, and being taught to please God. Violence begets violence. To spank and be violent toward children is proof of the perpetrator's ignorance of modern scientific evidence that spanking is detrimental to the emotional, physical and spiritual evolution of children. Ignorance begets ignorance, and if you're in charge of children, feeding your mind with ignorance is no benefit to your child.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful advice for the christian family.
My mother in law recommended this book to me after the birth of my first child. She had read the original version when her children were young.I also bought the original version and used it with my first child. Now that my son is firmly entrenched in his terrible two's I decided to update to this newer edition to see if Dr. Dobson had any new insights several decades later.I'm pleased to say he sticks to his guns and The New Dare to Discipline is almost word for word the same as the original.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be misled
This is a great book.My parents used these principles and so do I.It advocates spanking among other forms of discipline. It contains balanced, tried and true principles for child rearing. This book never advocates abuse, beating, shoving, pushing or broken arms as some on this site have claimed.Almost of all of the kids I knew growing up got the occasional spanking.I can't name one, who feels that a spanking was abuse or who feels they were emotionally damaged by it. Child abuse is a horrific evil in the world, but this isn't child abuse. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, hilarious and scriptural
Ginger Plowman is humble, real and hilarious. It's like having a godly friend that's more experienced taking you by the hand and leading you through training your children. She's has helped me to be a more discerning listener to the pulse of my child's heart. She helps you train your child by diagnosing the root of the problem rather than just pruning and pruning but never really getting at the "cancer"... (the sin in their hearts, their motives, desires.)
2-0 out of 5 stars Extremely focused on spanking only
I did find some of the advice in this book to be helpful and convicting spiritually. However, I cannot recommend it because of the serious problems. In the first place, the only discipline tool for punishment that the book recommends is spanking (although in one example, in the middle of the *large* section about spanking, the author takes away privileges, but she never recommends that). She never acknowledges or addresses the possibility that the "rod" in scripture might mean anything other than or in addition to literal physical discipline, and she provides no analysis of what the "rod" actually meant in the time of the writing of Proverbs nor of what a "child" is in that context (what age was the writer referring to?).Her point would be much stronger if she addressed some of these issues, but she just glibly throws out the standard scriptures, without any meaningful interpretation or analysis, and then moves on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal
Being a parent of 4, aged 10-20, and having been a single parent all but six years, I have faced many struggles with my kids, and my own parenting style, as a result of my own upbringing. We've been in family counceling off and on for years, and this book, recommended by our most recent councelor, has provided me with the insight to understand what I've been hearing all this time. It puts things into perspective, enables one to get to the root of the problems, eliminate power struggles, feel empathy, eliminate revenge cycles and more.It outlines each step in detail and builds upon the previous chapter. I've spent many years saying "I understand in theory that to be true, but I just can't get to the point of making it my own practice, or change my attitude." I can understand it now, have been able to put it to practice, and have witnessed the positive changes in my family as a result. I just can't say enough about this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Assistance Needed ASAP
The author Jane Nelsen as educated as she is does not write down to her readers. She writes in a way that is easy to understand. This book helped me to understand people, and gives guidance how to understand my child as well why and how to parent and the effects of my decisions. This Book, Positive Discipline has been the most helpful book that I have read in the first three years of my child's life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Influencial Book For Me--My Favorite Parenting Book
I first read this book before I had kids when I was a new teacher. I've read it several times over the last 10 years when I've needed to rededicate myself to being an understanding, compassionate parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT book!
Barbara Colorosa does a fabulous job of making good parenting seem plausible. She gives specific suggestions in how to handle specific situations which makes all this seem like I can actually do it. The other day, during one of my kids' insistence on not doing what I asked, I thought of Barbara's advice in handling manipulative behavior (I was skeptical it would work...), and gave it a shot. It WORKED! My kids don't quite know what to do, but I can tell you I'm a believer. We are all MUCH happier! I think we would all have happier kids and parents if everyone read her book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent parenting approach
This is by far the best parenting book I've read, and I've read very many. It's not exactly a quick fix for any specific parenting issue, rather it is a push toward a better parenting philosophy in general. She gives the reader a template for parenting children in a respectful, flexible, non-authoritarian, non-permissive, style, and it is up to the parent to fill in the blanks for their individual circumstances. Discipline is a learning experience, not punishment, and the overall goal is to slowly and carefully place responsibility right where it belongs - on the child. She tells us that if we eventually want adult children who are responsible, caring, kind, dependable, and considerate people, the training starts right now.Another outstanding book that uses these same philosophies is How to talk so kids will listen and how to listen so kids will talk. Another book that uses respectful parenting techniques and provides quick one-two page solutions to everyday problems is Positive Discipline A-Z.

5-0 out of 5 stars So good I had to by the audio version too!
Wow, just the refreshing perspective I've been SEARCHING for.Although I knew I did not want to parent the way my parents parented me, that was the only example I had. After reading this book I am excited I have found what to replace that way with. The direction in this book sits well with my heart and faith but also gives me a back bone and confidence in my new technique. I also purchased the autio book set for the car as a refresher. ... Editorial Review

Every parent has nightmares about that moment when their child isrefused a request (I want a candy bar, Mommy! Not today, Johnny.) and inresponse, he falls to the ground, screams, and thrashes about--all in a verypublic place. Mortified by this tantrum, Mommy might be tempted to give in, buythe candy bar, end the embarrassing moment, and ultimately behave in a way thattells Johnny tantrums work. There's a better way, says Sal Severe, author ofRead more

5-0 out of 5 stars saw results in days
I really enjoyed this book and was able to see changes in the behavior of my 3 year old within days of implementing the information in this book. I feel like I'm much more positive and feel better about my parenting. Also after a month of "positive parenting" I am confident that my son will behave when my hands are full in public :) (at least most of the time). Even my sceptical husband has come around after seeing such quick results. Definately Recommended!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful

I love to hear Sal speak and to read his works. As a parenting author and speaker myself I find we share similar philosophies and practices.

GREAT!!!!!I only wish that I had read this book when my children were toddlers. If children came with a book, this would be the one.As parents, our ultimate goal should be to raise responsibile independent adults. This book gives a whole new perspective on parenting.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great advice
I suffered from terrible verbal abuse as a child, and now as a mother have had a very difficult time seeing our daughter in any pain. This book has helped me to understand more clearly that true, Christ-like love gives us the strength to help our children to live assertively, and that while we work to protect them from harm, to try to protect them from every day life and consequences hurts them significantly more in the long run.It did a great job of teaching how to parent with high though realistic expectations of your children, while always giving them the unconditional love and encouragement that they need to have happy, successful lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boundaries With Kids -# 1 Parenting Book!!!
I have to say that this book is absolutely my favorite parenting book thus far (and I have read many!)As a Christian parent attempting to do the best I can with the 3 beautiful kids that God has entrusted to me-this book has been the most helpful in giving practical insights and advise with how to deal with the day-to-day challenges of raising great kids.I love the understanding that is imparted as to healthy child developement and the encouragement and inspiration this book infuses to its readers.Parenting for Teens is also an amazing book - My oldest child is an 11 yr old girl and this book is chalk full of great advise to learn and implement as your kids are approaching their teen years-not just applicable if your kids are older! ... I have a new 3rd edition of SOS which has a new ISBN of 0935111212.You can only find it at Amazon if you put in the new number. It is so easy to read and understand and you will see amazing changes in your child's behavior right away. The new SOS makes a great gift for parents with young children.
5-0 out of 5 stars Reactions of a teacher, mother of two sons, and wife of the author
This 3rd edition is now available on Amazon with an ISBN number of 0935111212.The part of SOS that I like best is the `Index of Solutions to 46 Behavior Problems.'Parents are busy people and it's easy to find a section dealing with a particular behavior problem such as tantrums without reading the whole book.I have used most of the SOS solutions in my elementary classroom, with my two sons, and with preschoolers when I taught preschool. These methods work!

1-0 out of 5 stars Should be illegal
This book caused a lot of pain and suffering in my family because of its extremism. I noticed when I quietly threw it out (thankfully without anybody noticing) that my parents started being kinder and peace (slowly) returned to our household. Its tactics push the envelope of abuse and this dangerous work does not belong in any home that believes in kindness or love. It promotes a "might makes right" view and argues that parents are automatically right because of their age, absolutely. And another thing I'd like to point out is, who ever heard of "ODD"? It sounds to me like just another made-up 'disorder' that is actually just kids being kids. These are quite common and I think Ridley should be imprisoned for this. He is a con artist and his so-called 'mental disorder' is about as real as 'youthful tendency disorder'.

5-0 out of 5 stars sensible and practical suggestions
As an education professional working with parents some of whom struggle with oppositional teenagers, I found the book sane and practical. It acknowledges the possibility of some clinical depression and/or substance abuse issues that would render the strategies ineffective until the other issues are addressed, which some other books do not.It may not be "the answer", but it's a great resource for parents.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not too bad but
I thought some of the ideas in the book were good way of dealing with my son maybe when he hits his teens! But and there is always a but. My son is 8 and with O.D.D you have to always be 2 steps a head of that child when it comes to behaviors and rewards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great when hitting a discipline rut!
I read the book as soon as I got it home. We were having discipline problems with out almost 4 year old and with a new sibling in the mix we didn't want to make drastic changes again in his life. I often read the book when I'm frustrated by my childrens actions and it helps me to understand their way of thinking and how to make the correct discipline choices to fit the exact situation. Thanks Berry Brazelton!

5-0 out of 5 stars Raising children in an uncivilized world
Discipline teaches our children right from wrong and to care about doing right, to think of others before themselves. Too bad we can't raise the current generation of adults all over again. Hopefully today's parents, with the help of this book, will do better.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem
