3-0 out of 5 stars Worth a look
First I must say that I am not a fan of Dr. Phil so I know very little of this author's reputation. (I not an 'anti-fan' of Dr. Phil either, just not big on TV)
4-0 out of 5 stars Not sure about this one
I think that this book is a good teaching tool for all these parents who want to prepare their children to score high in the IQ test. But when you think of that carefully, doesn't this defeat the idea of your intelligence being measurable by IQ tests? If you can improve the score by preparing yourself to the test that means that the test does not really measure your intelligence, but only your ability to score high on the test. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Sleep, Sleep, Sleep
No need for letting a baby cry.Lots of need for structered naps. Why not look a little at nutrition and a little at spirituality? The "Dr." comes from a "doctor's" point of view. Native Americans used cradleboards that rocked the child naturally to sleep while suspended from a branch.Sounds archaic. Some new-agers use essential oils and diffuse "Gentle Baby" or "Peace and Calming." I read, "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause," and learned about the body, mind, and spirit of my children. They all sleep now, and so do I.I wish the doctors that write these books, Weisbuth especially, would do a little research they profess to be good at, and learn a more holistic approach to children's health, and for that matter, ours.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best source available on the subject
Dr. Weisbluth's book was lent to me by a friend just as my daughter was turning 5 1/2 months old. She had changed from a great sleeper to miserable and I couldn't figure out why. I had said from the beginning that I would never let my child "cry it out" and I resisted when people mentioned this book because I was concerned that I would have to do just that. But, after reading his book cover to cover I learned Dr. Weisbluth's book doesn't focus on letting your child cry. He explains when and why you should put your child down to sleep and addresses the emotions parents feel if their child does cry for any length of time. After reading this book I discovered my daughter was overtired and once I started following the nap guidelines her bedtime went from crying and screaming to quietly laying down ech night. Do not let people scare you with the "crying it out" part - as I said Dr. Weissbluth's book addresses much more and I'm so happy that we decided to try his techniques. If you are having a difficult time with naptime or bedtime I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Price is psychologically devastatingly high.Read the book to protect your family from psychological dysfunction
This is an excellent book about how the affluent have adopted undermining values (perfectionism, materialism) and how it negatively affects parenting style and causes psychological neurosis among teens.I am the parent of a teenage daughter who goes to a public high school in Marin County. Thus, we live in the social milieu described by Dr. Levine. The book content was both shocking and revealing to me.When I shared some of Dr. Levine's findings that I could not believe I would ask my daughter about them.Invariably, she confirmed that Dr. Levine was correct. That's how I found out that one of my daughter's acquaintances did cut herself frequently. That's also when I knew that Dr. Levine was onto something and not just sensationalizing another marketable myth about Marin County. Also, this book really is not about Marin County as it depicts a nationwide prevalent phenomenon of teenage psychological dysfunction among the affluent.
5-0 out of 5 stars Reinforcing the basics
A family does not have to be "affluent" in the dollar amounts Dr. Levine describes, to have very similar issues. Middle class kids have "stuff", are envious of the designer "stuff" and haven't a sense of purpose of themselves. The truth is that many of the parents don't seem to either because they are caught up with evrything else except their kids. Kids from lower class to upper class all seem to have phones, Ipods, etc. While reading this book, I spoke with my 14-year old daughter who agreed with much of what the kids felt in the book and realized quite to her surprise that things aren't appreciated as well when not earned. Many of the cases are sad and the acting out for attention in extreme ways seems to happen more frequently. Cutting, getting high, lying, and failing school on purpose are done without seeing future consequences. I think therapy can work for all those frustrated parents and their kids. This is an informative book and what I took from it is: be a parent not a friend, establish rules and stick to them, help kids when warranted and don't let things go too far before doing something.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Parenting Book for EVERY Parent (not just the rich ones)
Don't judge this book by its title.Parents at every income level will find it helpful.Although the book focuses somewhat on the emotional problems of priveleged youth, The Price of Privelege is a goldmine of valuable information and advice on parenting that we ALL could use.As a child psychologist, I have worked with children and families from all walks for life for the last 12 years.I have seen parents at all income levels make the same mis-steps that Levine talks about.Levine lays out, very clearly, why so much of what parents currently believe to be "good" parenting is at best unhelpful, and at worst destructive (news flash: controlling your child's behavior will help him/her be a happier person and do better in college; praise undermines confidence and effort; self-esteem is not as important as you think it is; chores are good for children).

1-0 out of 5 stars Crazy
I am going to be very opinionated here, but just to make the point to you of what it is like.I could not stand this book.I thought the ideas were LOONEY!They recomend that when you child has a tantrum, you join them to help them understand that you understand, even in front of others.Ha!No thanks.I do love my kids, but I also would like them to learn what is correct behavior in front of others. They do have to grow up eventually!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Having really enjoyed Happiest Baby on the Block, I thought this book would be helpful too. I was so turned off by it, I couldn't even finish reading. Dr. Karp is pushing evolution in explaining why toddlers behave the way the do. I just couldn't take it anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Background on behavior!

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps me understand myself and my child
This book is "worth it" for the brief section on recognizing that sometimes one may be trying to raise the child one wishes one had, or assumed/imagined one would have, or it would be easier on one if one had -- rather than the kid one actually has. This book helped me realize that she and I have very different temperaments (which is wonderful) and that this is at the root of many of the conflicts and disappointments we've had in her four years of life so far.It also shed light on why my relationship with my own mom continues to be so fraught. My all-time favorite books (and movies, poems, tv shows, etc.) are ones where I am stunned to recognize myself in them somewhere. My experience of this book definitely puts it in that category!I also find useful Kurcinka's idea that thinking about how the "more" traits encompassed by spiritedness are things we positively value in adults can transform my interaction with my child. It reminds me to stop wanting to change her by lowering her intensity, sensitivity, perceptiveness, persistence and energy.

5-0 out of 5 stars For parents who's child is More...
If you have a "More" child (more emotional, more energetic, more enthusiastic, more easily angered, etc) you know how tough it can be to deal with it. This book is a pretty good guide to get you started and help you guide the child through those emotional currents. It's not easy to parent a spirited child but neither is it easy to BE a spirited child. Kurcinka's book helps provide a lot of guidance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended for any parent whose child is "more"
This book has done more than anything else to help me understand my spirited child. Coming from two introverted, laid-back parents, her personality was a complete surprise and we really didn't know how to handle it. I learned why my spirited child recharges and behaves the way she does, and from that we were able to develop ways to nurture her own personality while guiding her to acceptable behavior. While every day is still a challenge, I'm able to see the forest for the trees when her intensity and persistence will do her well in life. This book made me go from feeling like I'm the only parent in the world who is feeling so challenged to one who knows how to work with it. I strongly recommend it to any parent whose child is "more." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good mind opener
I am a father of two boys and I came across this book by searching on Amazon for books that could help me improve my parenting skills. I love my boys and I consider my parenting as a full time job. I read other readers comments and I did some research before I purchased a couple of books, Raising Cain being one of them. My main motivation in buying these books is derived from the frustration that I experience when I know I fail to understand my son on some issues and also from my worry that I do not understand what is going on in a life of a young man in today's world.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent insight
I appreciated the insight in this book and have recommended it to everyone I know, and most importantly to the women in my life so they can understand me a little better when I do that male "thing" that confounds them so.As others have done I also read Reviving Ophelia and I would recommend these two books be read in tandem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for parents/caregivers
This book provides a fascinating insight into the emotional development of boys.I am only on Chapter 4 of the book and already it has provided answers to some fundamental, why-does-he-do-that questions that I've had about my son.It should be required reading for teachers and administrators.I definitely recommend this book to any parent of young boys. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good set of basics for proper discipline
This book has been really helpful. My wife and I were in a pretty regular tug-of-war with our three-year-old.We were getting to our own limits. The examples and techniques of this book made it pretty clear why we were in the jam we were in.Our son ruled the house...until we both read this book. The games came to a halt the next day.Our son was a little shocked at first and went to great lengths to try and test the limits of our authority. It was difficult at first, to say the least. But, after about two weeks of persistence on our part, we turned him around and put some very clear boundaries in place - PROBLEMS SOLVED!
5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for writing this book!
Up until reading this book I struggled with my son on a daily (if not hourly) basis. This book helped me understand my son's personality and gave me tools to react to him. It wasn't his personality that was the problem, but how I was reacting to it.We still have our moments, but they're not as often and I can handle them more effectively. We are no longer battling for hours and making life miserable for ourselves and everyone around us!I am a stay-at-home mom and because of our relationship, I considered going back to work.I once thought that he would be better off with someone else because at least he wouldn't be arguing all day.Now I am able to feel confident that it's best for him to be at home with me and learn from me and he can now do that in a positive manner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another way to look at the strong-willed child.
This book gives very good advice about managing behavior problems in difficult children. However, the concept of a "strong-willed child" is confusing because it implies a child with will power or self control. These difficult children actually have poor will power and self control. The techniques given in this book will help teach such children self control.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of two great books for stressed out parents
As parents who have seen many of our friends completely lose perspective as their kids apply to college, my wife and decided that we would not go down that road when our time came. Forget all the books that imply they will get your child into a "brand name" school. It's about discovering together a place where they can grow, and strenghtening your relationshipas you launch them toward their future. In the name of sanity, I recommend this book (and also a great one our own pediatrician recommended, "Getting In Without Freaking Out.") Stop hovering -- start helping your kids by not imposing your agenda.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential book for parents of high school students
As a pediatrician and the mother of a senior, I see the unhealthy stress that my patients and some classmates of my son go through during high school, particularly during their senior year. This essential book for every high school parent will give them new models for guiding their child to healthy success.Rather than defining success for your high school student as getting into a college ranked high by a magazine, parents will learn how to help their child define and reach their own goals. For those who choose college, they need a parent's help to find the right match --- a school that allows them to grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially.

3-0 out of 5 stars An OK reference for common problems
I had high hopes for this book but I was a little disappointed when I read through it.I was looking for a comprehensive reference that would give mefairly specific information on common complaints in early childhood.Unfortunately, the book is somewhat vague about most of the problems. For example, I was interested in learning more about reflux in infants and I was able to learn more about reflux in one of my breastfeeding books than in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE reference for new parents.
As a nurse, I highly recommend this book for new parents. It is easy to read and understand for all audiences.I found many answers here that prevented me from calling the pediatrician or advice nurse after hours. It is divided into sections by age so don't let the number of pages intimidate you - keep it by your bed and read a few pages when you have a spare moment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, excellent, excellent...
In my last trimester, it started to dawn on me that I was now an expert on pregnancy (having read every pregnancy book I could get my hands on), but I hadn't the foggiest idea of what to do when we brought the baby home!I started scrambling to find a guide to those stressful first weeks, and I came upon this book after reading through countless others. This is truly the best guide out there. Why?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for parents
My thoughts: Its well written-not verbose at all, each chapter is to the point with great suggestions. His points are based recent on scientific studies and are not from glossed over like many writers do who don't fully comprehend the research. the "mozart effect" is a perfect example. He tells you the limits of what the research shows, eg Dont plunck the kid in front of the stereo all day because thats not going to do much.
5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Information for Parents
Raise a Smarter Child by Kindergarten is perhaps the most comprehensive book I've ever seen relating to enhancing our children's intelligence and paving the way for their future success. Dr. Perlmutter, a neurologist, not only provides the activities, lifestyle recommendations anf nutritional information to build a better brain, but he goes so far as to claim that as many as 30 IQ points are up for grabs and provides the hard core science to back it up. He shows us not only how to treat ADHD without medication, but more importantly, how we can easily prevent it in the first place. His unique schedule for immunizations is especially helpful. This is very important read for all parents and future parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that promotes creavitiy and skills development early in life
"Raise a Smarter Child by Kindergarten: Build a Better Brain and Increase IQ by up to 30 points" by David Md Perlmutter is a pretty good book which promotes creativity, skills development, and it reinforces common knowledge directed towards improving a child's mental skills prior to the elementary school years. Perlmutter provides readers with a list of tools that they can use specifically towards these purposes and advises against common pitfalls, such as excessive television viewing and video game playing. There are games that he offers which are geared towards improving skills development and he even speaks to advice that child rearers can use to ward off enemies of the brain. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Overly generalized
When I bought this book, I was expecting helpful solutions, but all I got were general facts that most parents of autistic children already know. The book definitely needed more specific information on how to handle problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging Autism:Helping Children Relate, Communicate & Think with the DIR Floortime Approach
This book is a must read for parents with an autistic child. This book is easy to read and understand. Dr. Greenspan has made me feel I will be able to help my son fully recover. This is the 1st time in 3 years I have hope!My son is moderate to severly autistic. We have been doing Floortime & have seen much success. What a natural way of helping him & having fun doing it.Thank you Dr. Greenspan.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Engaging and Too Little Information
I have been a Learning Specialist for nearly twenty years at the high school and community college levels. When I read "Engaging Autism" by Stanley I. Greenspan, I was anticipating a book filled with fresh information, scientific validity, and ideas that could be realistically applied in a variety of classroom settings.Instead, I read page after page of disappointment.DIR/Floortime is an interesting/innovative approach for helping individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental disabilities. However, this book was extremely weak in the following areas:repetition of the same ideas/concepts throughout the work, reliance on anecdotal information, no scientific validation of information, absence of an in-depth bibliography, frequent reference to products written by Greenspan and his team, and lack of organization throughout the text.DIR/Floortime is presented as too simplistic when in actuality it appears to be extremely time consuming and labor instensive which is impractical in contemporary public education settings. The author recommends homeschooling and intense family involvement as though this was a simple solution. However, parents uusually do not have the extensive time or expertise to devote to the DIR/Floortime approach. If you are interested in learning what DIR/Floortime entails, I recommend researching Internet sources or consulting works by other authors. This book is largely a waste of time for professionals in the field of special education.Unless you want to read a rehash of ideas over and over again, I would not waste my time with this book.I was going to order another book by Dr. Greenspan entitled "The Child With Special Needs:Encouraging Intellectual and Emotional Growth" but will not be doing it at this time.

5-0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend Sensational Kids
Have you ever wanted to be a 'little mouse in the corner' to see what life is really like for children with a Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)?You can do that through Lucy Miller's new book, Sensational Kids. This book is truly sensational.I've been recommending it to a lot of the parents and teachers of students I service.
5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not finished reading yet, and our lives have already changed!
My 3.5 year-old daughter was diagnosed with SPD (at that time it was called SID) when she was 8 months old, and has been in and out of OT ever since.Lately she has had some significant behavior problems, and we have tried multiple strategies that haven't worked.I'm a counselor and parent coach, and I was beginning to feel very inept because all the strategies that I teach my clients weren't working with my own child. When I started reading this book, I realized (duh!) that the behavior issues were caused by SPD, and, therefore, typical "behavior management" techniques don't work the same way.We have changed our framework in responding to her behavior, and my daughter has become the most cooperative and happy child overnight. Her teachers have even noticed a huge change from just giving her a big tight hug when she begins to "melt down."It's incredible! Our lives have been completely changed in just a few days.Thank you, Lucy, and we hope to see you soon at the STAR Center in Colorado!
