4-0 out of 5 stars I *Have* Learned How to Behave!
I purchased "How to Behave"when my eldest was 16 months old and have picked it up again now that she (5) and her brother (3) have reached new developmental stages and developed 'new', not so desirable habits'.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Resource
This book is a good resource for parents who want to know how to lovingly discipline their child.Sal Severe explains developmental characteristics of the preschool child and how this affects their behavior.Developmental factors include language acquisition, temperament, self esteem and motivation. He also explains how parents can prevent misbehavior by understanding these characteristics, and when the child does misbehave, how to correct the behavior. His suggestions include consistency, role modeling, redirection and time out.One thing that I do like about this book is that he repeatedly says that discipline is a teaching process- we want to teach our children to do better.I also like that he provides specific examples of problems and solutions. He tends to repeat key points in almost every chapter, so if you are reading the entire book, it seems a bit much. But you could also skip to a particularly relevant chapter without missing important information.Overall, a nice resource to add to your parenting collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best parenting book for preschoolers
A MUST!!!! I am a Pediatrician, I've got a whole library of parenting books. This is the best one I have read and I recommend it to all parents of 2-6 year olds.I have had a lot of great feedback that the book has really helped so many of my families.I have got two of my own small children and have found the book a lifesaver. It is very common sense advice!Very easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for those Interested in Co-sleeping or Attachment Parenting
While the really important information on cosleeping (mattress/bed safety, not smoking/drinking alcohol/taking any drugs that would make it hard for you to wake up, etc.) have been covered in several parenting books that I already own, I really liked this book because it focuses on just the one aspect of parenting and dissects it pretty fully.I won't provide a synopsis because other reviewers have already done so, but I particularly liked the ways to respond to others criticism of your decision to co-sleep.I have found as a young parent that people really do pry into all aspects of your life and offer their opinion whether you want it or not.Having resources that back up my choices makes it a little easier to stand firm around people who are older and 'wiser.'Glad I bought it, will reread.I noticed there is an in-depth treatment of gentle ways to ease baby out of the bed, and will be reading that later.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, fun to read
I really enjoyed reading this book. I intended to cosleep (and I do), based on friends' experiences parenting, but it's nice to have a lot of information to feel more secure in one's decision. And oddly enough, this has the best pictures of side-lying nursing I've found yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful big sibling present
This is a very special activity book for new big siblings, with places for information about themselves as well as the new baby.Published for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, it is visually terrific of course; but it is also thoughtfully composed, with interesting questions and fun observations. This has been our family's favorite sibling gift since our older son received one on his brother's birth 18 1/2 years ago!We all still enjoy his comments, drawings and stories on becoming a big brother!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad checklist...
Parents who wish for confident girls will find the "usual" list here, all centering around developing respect and confidence in girls. There are some glaring omissions, however.(Nothing on boundary setting, questions that girls may have about development.)Some of the recommendations may be wrong in certain settings (e.g., "Don't impose your views" makes no sense if the child is not safe). This is child-centered, laissez-faire parenting, suitable for middle-class, well-educated, physically safe families.4-0 out of 5 stars Raising Confident Girls

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro. book for Kids and Media studies
I can't say that this is the greatest or most intellectual book on kids and media that I've ever read, but it's still an excellent account of how the media...particularly childrens media completely disregards children as anything other than a commodity. This is an excellent book for a parent, or someone exploring this topic for the first time who is looking for an easy read that presents them with straight facts about childrens media without a lot of analytical or psychological babble.
4-0 out of 5 stars You have got to be kidding me!
The book The Other Parent by James P. Steyer is about a man named Jim who works in the media. He is Jealous of his competitors simply because they make more money than him. His competitors went to the same college as him and work just as hard as him. He soon realizes that he loves working and making children happy. On the other hand his competitors only work for money and this is the reason why they make more money than Jim. 2-0 out of 5 stars A Left-wing Slant on the Tube
Steyer presents some interesting ideas and potential solutions in The Other Parent but his blatant ideological leanings and constant fawnings over the Clintons ('I will forever appreciate his [Bill Clinton's] personal kindness' - see the acknowledgements) will trouble all but the most ardent admirers of the former president. Steyer gives no indication if he would allow his own daughter to serve 'under' the former president as an a young intern some day.Read more

After reading many reviews, I finally ordered 3 books about premature babies. This book was definetly the BEST. I read through it daily and it answered many questions. Iespecially recommend it if your baby had no problems and was only in the incubator to grow up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for NICU parents
This book contained the answers to questions I had while my baby was in the NICU. As a second-time parent, I was especially concerned with attachment issues with my baby that might arise from being hospitalized. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Source of Information
I bought the book immediately after finding out that my daughter was allergic to milk. This book has offered a great deal of information regarding food allergies and how to deal with them when your child has one or more.It has also provided me some comfort, partly by educating me on the topic and partly by letting me know that others deal with the same fears and emotions that I am going through.Having a child with a life threatening condition such as this is so scary and stressful, but this book helps you to deal with that by giving you useful information and tips that have been used by the author in her own struggles with food allergic children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Susan
My son has 11 food allergies and when I left his doctors office I didn't know what I was going to do.I bought this book after reading some of the reviews.I read the whole book within a couple of nights. Marianne's writing is like she talking with you and not lecturing. Her topics are easy to understand and gave me confidence that I could do this. The suggestions she gives are do able and since she has also has a child with allegies she gives suggestions and not a list of what to worry about like I received at the docotors office. I have recommended this book to the women in our support group, thanks to Marianna I now belong to.

Editorial Review

"Yeah, he wets the bed, but so did I. He'll grow out of it." Sure, he probably will. But in the meantime, a child who chronically wets may suffer from low self-esteem or feel restricted in his or her social life. Pediatricians and parents regularly respond to bedwetting by forbidding water after dinner, prescribing drugs or an alarm system, or even resorting to punishment, but attempts are often sporadic and not part of an organized plan. As a result, they're not always successful. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Trials and Trickles
This is truly an excellent, in depth report of how and why children remain at the bedwetting stage in their lives. It is a commitment to a regimen that is necessary to get beyond the wetting stage. I have an 8 year-old male that is a very heavy sleeper. I sometimes think I've comitted more into this than he has. While the Kegel exercises work, and we made a rhyme of it...(we call it doing the Three Pee) it has controlled his over-wetting on most nights. So, our nights of getting up to change sheets are slowly becoming history. In my opinion, if the child is truly committed to being dry, this program WILL work! It's an excellent read for the biological minded. Share it with your twinkler. They'll enjoy understanding the science behind the wet bed!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the subject

2-0 out of 5 stars Important topics did not jive with my child rearing ideology.
When I first began reading I found the stories to be unrealistic but thought that it may still be worth reading. For Example: The man who hits his child because the child said they had gone to a specific place only last night when they actually had gone days/weeks ago. His claim was that the child was a liar. Anyone who is interested in bringing up a well child would not behave that way and certainly a person like that is not interested in reading a book to improve their parenting skills. Anywho, I thought this book would give me creative ideas with discipline when the book is really about, as Tucson Toddler Mom said, common sense ideology.
5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable resource for parents and educators
The authors of this remarkable parenting resource parallel discipline with teaching a child, and punishment with shaming a child. The emphasis of their philosophy is placed on physical and emotional readiness as well as on respecting a child as an individual capable of making choices about his/her behavior. As a child grows into an autonomous individual, parents often struggle to find their place. This resource lays out practical solutions for guiding a child to make good choices and being responsible for those choices at an early age. All of the strategies suggested by Nelsen, et. al. focus on raising a positive, happy child who feels taught, rather than shamed for his/her poor choices. The result is a child who views making a mistake as a learning experience rather than a permanent wrongdoing. This book, and the accompanying series, has become a useful resource to me in parenting my own child, but it has been equally assistive in my career as an educator. The philosophy of the authors is logical, simple, and easy to implement. It puts a positive twist on discipline and encourages healthy growth in a happy, predictable, and well-adjusted environment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Did everyone else who reviewed this book actually read it???
First of all, let me say that nowhere in this book do the authors advocate weaning by twelve months or letting a baby "cry it out," as some reviewers claimed. If it did, I would have put it down right away in the bookstore and not bought it.If it seemed to clash with Attachment Parenting, a style I am fond of and have used for most of my daughter's nearly three years, I also would have been less inclined to read it.But it doesn't do any of those things.

I love this book. When I first received it it sat on the coffee table for about two weeks. Once I picked it up I could not put it down. It is jammed packed with information. I just love it. I give it to all my friends who are also becoming new moms. Great baby manual....

5-0 out of 5 stars "Must have" parenting book!
I give this book to every new family I know and loan my copy to friends at all stages of parenting children under age 5. This book makes so much sense and frames parenting as a way of understanding and responding to your child versus molding to adult needs. It is a "must have" big picture book that I totally depend on. I highly recommend it! (Erin, Brian's wife)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must
I highly recommend this book to every parent of children ages 3 to 6, and their teachers too. It is so much more respectful -of parents and children- then all those books that just tell parents what to do and talk about children as if they were simply meant to be programmed or controlled. I have found that with the help of this book, the new understanding I have of my four-year-old has led me to new ways of responding to her difficult behaviors. As a result, she is thriving, maturing before our eyes, and we're all happier for it.

1-0 out of 5 stars A far cry from first Touchpoints
I was eager to receive this book, since I found his first book essential to my understanding my daughter. He abandoned his style, which is detailed and explanatory, but applicable to every parent who reads. This book unfortunately follows four children to the exclusion of many other styles of child.I couldn't extrapolate any of the kids' personalities to my child, so it rendered the book useless for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars I found my child
I found my child over and over again on these beautifully written pages. Not in one of the four different children that the reader watches as they grow fduring the preschoo years, but in bits and pieces of all of them. I also loved the last chapter with all the different sections on challenges children have to deal with, especially since myh mother died and i was struggling with how to help my five year old son with this. This book really helped me and my son. ... Read more

What is up with people? I am stay-home mother, a very independent soul, and have an education background in early and elementary education. i found this book to be wonderful. i have referred it to all of my friends. i learned not only so much about my daughter and our relationship but also about myself and my relationships growing up. It is a book written with great insight from a father with girls and an extensive research and education background and a wife with the same. It is also approached from a standpoint from mostly biological research and parallels in cross-cultures. A must read!

What a fun book!My family and I have had a great time exploring the world around us through this engaging book. The book is very easy to follow, the instructions are clear, and best of all, the hands-on activities are wonderful! This book has offered my children a chance to work together and participate in a wide variety of fun projects.Making slime and blasting-off rockets -- it doesn't get any better than that!!5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Sensational!
"Crinkle, crinkle, crunchity, crunch, I love autumn leaves a bunch!" shout my preschoolers. We are in a nearby park gathering leaves and other material for upcoming activities at our classroom "sceince table." There we will be making leaf and tree bark rubbings along with nature collages. The students love this "sensory" walk, and so do I. Planning the lesson was a snap, thanks to Peggy Ashbrook and her excellent book, Science is Simple.5-0 out of 5 stars Great sciencebook has it all!
While working on a preschool science curriculum project, I have recently read through loads of books on this subject and I have to say this book is GREAT!Lots of FUN activities (arranged by theme) with concrete ideasfor teaching scientific reasoning with each, suggestedbook lists, ideas for independent play at the science table, getting parents involved etc.Best of all, the activities encourage little ones to explore their world with curiosity and empowers them by showing them how to answer questions using "guess, test, observe, reflect". ... Editorial Review

Whether it's musical talent, criminal tendencies, or fashion sense, we humans want to know why we have it or why we don't. What makes us the way we are? Maybe it's in our genes, maybe it's how we were raised, maybe it's a little of both--in any case, Mom and Dad usually receive both the credit and the blame. But not so fast, says developmental psychology writer Judith Rich Harris. While it has been shown that genetics is only partly responsible for behavior, it is also true, Harris asserts, that parents play a very minor role in mental and emotional development. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Your Mother Is Not To Blame!
This is an important, almost revolutionary book that makes a convincing case for the author's premise - that outside of genetic factors, children's behavior is largely shaped by their peers. Harris flies against most modern doctrine that emphasizes the importance of quality time with parents, the importance of adult role models, etc. She says to the contrary - adult presence, good or bad, counts for little in the average child's life (excluding of course extreme cases of child abuse.) Children will do what their peer group approves. She likens being a kid to being a prisoner. The goal is not to be like the guards; the goal is to survive as a successful prisoner, and only one's fellow inmates can help one with that.

After reading "Freakonomics" the author of that book touched on this one. This book was very enlighting. Please read it with an open mind!

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Claims- But Incorrect
The nature/nurture debate has been raging since the beginning of Psychology research (and indeed before) and the body of literature on the subject can support both views. Most experts agree, however, that is MUST be a combination of both nature AND nurture. This book completely dismisses the notion that parents have lasting influence on their child's long-term development saying instead that peers are the shaping influence. As both a youth worker and a graduate student, I have seen first hand through academic literature and experience the importance of parents in the development of their children. To completely reject the notion that they affect their children's long-term development is simply impossible.Think of yourself as a thirteen-year-old; which would hurt you more:a slap on the face from your best friend or your parent?

Congratulations, folks. Don't get your child vaccinated. Then, when your child dies from H flu menigitis or suffers permanent brain damage; gets polio (especially on the Southern border) and dies or suffers permanent damage; gets diptheria, tetanus, whooping cough --- DO NOT SUE YOUR DOCTOR. BLAME ONLY YOURSELF.

5-0 out of 5 stars the truth about vaccinations- they are NOT immunizations
I did not read this book, but felt compelled to respond to the reviews in opposition to this book. This is nonsense, and anyone who really wants to know the truth about vaccines (which are erroneously called immunizations) should check out mercola.com, the personal webpage of Dr Mercola, DO, and google search on Dr Tenpenny, DO and Dr Stephanie Cave, MD. The website, the doctorwithin.com is also wonderful.
