5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended Reading!
This would be a good book for all parents. If you read this while your child is still an infant, you will save a lot of frustration for yourself as well as your child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Temperamental Difficulties
The Difficult Child is a self-help book for the parents of children with difficult temperaments. While all children have characteristic behavioral quirks, temperaments are so deep-seated that they manifest in infancy and are usually retained for a lifetime. Since temperaments can be inherited, they are probably linked to specific genes. In fact, one behavioral trait -- high activity level -- in mice seems to be associated with a specific gene (along with other characteristics), but such traits have not yet been genetically identified in humans.
2-0 out of 5 stars Good info but discriminatory
Firstly, I found his assumption that there is one type of "difficult" child annoying. One person might find a high activity level child difficult whereas another is more likely to find a low activity level child difficult. He mentions "goodness of fit" but doesn't seem to fully grasp how that concept means the term difficult is relative. A personal example: many people say autistic kids are difficult, but as an autistic child, I find NT kids more difficult.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Worst Case Scenario Book for Having a Second Child
If you are going to read only one book on introducing a second child to your family, this is the book to read. It offers advice on what to expect, things to think about and behaviors to watch for.
3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing exceptional, Just Ok
I wish the book gave more creative solutions. I felt the book gave advice that I could have given myself. On the other hand, at least I felt reasured that I was already doing everything I could to make sure the transition for my son of having a new sibling wasn't any more bothersome than it has to be. It's a simple read. You will pick up a few good points but I just don't feel I got enough out of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a BLESSING!!!!!
This book is a total blessing! I'm so happy that I ordered this book before the birth of my second child. I feel so well informed of what to expect from my first born when baby #2 comes home. Every mother should have this book before the birth of their second baby. In closing, I'm glad this book continues into the first year of the sibilings lives together! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars keep the age in mind
This is a well written babysitters guide. Just keep in mind that many states require that babysitters be 13 years old and have a babysitting class. If you aren't sure about your state's requirements (or didn't realize they existed), call your local department of Family and Children's Services and ask them the home-alone and babysitting age requirements.

5-0 out of 5 stars So, you want a night out?
Before you entrust your precious children to a babysitter, have them read this book. It is an indispensable and practical guide for babysitters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book!
After looking at nearly every massage book out there, I decided to buy this one and have not been disappointed with my choice. The main thing that clinched it for me was the fact that it is illustrated so well - every stroke has a photograph and a detailed description, making it so easy to follow. I found that many other books have line drawings rather than photos for many of the strokes. I also like the fact that there is not too much information. It is clear and concise - just what you need when you're holding the book open with one knee while attempting to massage a wriggly newborn!
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice for a book, but I'd rather look at a video.(I'm very visual.)
This book is nice, but for the same price you can buy a DVD on the subject.I like Aimee Ketchum's DVD because not only does she do a great job of demonstrating baby massage, but she also gives lots of information on how your baby develops. Her massage method lasts only 4-5 minutes per session. I really don't have the time to spend an hour giving my baby a massage. There is so much more information on her DVD about your baby and how simple exercises can help your baby's brain development and lots and lots of other stuff.I just don't see why you'd want to buy a book with only massage pictures in it when you can buy a DVD with not only lots of massage info, but also has tons and tons of other simple stuff you can do with your baby. It makes so much sense and you don't need to buy anything else. Plus Aimee has a nice personality and you can tell she really cares. She's very qualified and is a pediatric OT plus certified massage therapist for babies, like Gweneth Paltro hires to massage her baby.
5-0 out of 5 stars Baby Massage: The Calming Power of Touch
This has been one of the best purchases I have made since the birth of my son nine months ago.It has taught me how to massage him in a way that has helped me gain his trust. Not only does it relax him before bed, but it gives us some precious bonding time that can't be matched!I sing his favorite song while I do it, and someday, when he can talk, I'm sure he will sing along.I have suggested this book to all of my 'Mom' friends, and I urge all Mom's (and Dad's) to buy this one!! ... This a good resource for people who are choosing not to use medication to help manage AD/HD. The book give a basic idea of what AD/HD is. It offers suggestions for natural ways to help with AD/HD such as changes in diet, toxin removal, biofeedback. etc. The suggestions in the book may also pertain to ADDults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solving the puzzle
Laura Stevens provides a much needed road map for parents seeking help for their children with ADHD.By providing step-by-step instructions, sound nutritional knowledge, excellent examples, problem-specific narratives, and good, common sense day-to-day practices (i.e.-recipes), she is eliminating the frustration in the search for answers for current and future parents of children with ADHD.This book provides the type of aid that only could have been given by someone who has had first hand experience in raising children with ADHD.Parents can now learn what to do directly from the book rather than waiting while much of the medical community is playing catch-up to scientific literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing and enlightening!
My daughter is now on the verge of turning 19 and has just left for college, and though there is no turning back the clock, I really wish that (while she was still living under our roof) we had had more of the kind of discussions that Drs. Sharon Lamb and Lyn Mikel Brown recommend in their very eye-opening and engaging book, Packaging Girlhood: Rescuing Our Daughters From Marketers Schemes.Although I should have known better, as a baby boomer child of the 60s and certainly part of a generation that prided itself in its individualism, its cynicism, and its power to challenge and question the version of truth that was being handed to us by a materialistic, antiquated and male dominated society, I am guilty of naively assuming both that we had come further along in dismantling negative, restrictive female stereotypes, and that my own children wouldjust naturally be born into the world with the same skeptical and critical eye that my own generation actually had to acquire.I realize now, that as enlightened as I thought I had been, I did not do all that I could to help my daughter interpret and critically dissect the narrow image of girlhood and womanhood that has been sold to her by marketers and media. Is it too late now?I'd like to think that is never too late to have these kinds of discussions.I hope that my daughter will read this book before she becomes a parent one day, so she can begin these discussions much earlier with her own daughters.I have already recommended this book to my book club and my colleagues at work, and it is amazing how much interesting conversation it has already elicited.I highly recommend this book to all parents, future parents, and anyone who naively thinks that "pretty in pink" is an old stereotype that we have long gotten rid of. If you feel that changing "pretty in pink" to "sizzling in hot pink" is progress in a positive direction, then maybe this book won't do as much for you as it did for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST Read!
Packaging Girlhood: Rescuing Our Daughters from Marketers' Schemes should be required reading for all parents. I would go even further--it should be required reading for everyone, because the girls who are being bombarded by the media have brothers, uncles and aunts, cousins, grandparents and friends who probably are buying into the marketing schemes--and should also be educated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book that has hands on practical knowledge to pass on.
I have been teaching my son, and trying to figure out just how the information is suppose to get in and this book was the lightbulb. After reading this book I thought I would try some of the ideas with teaching him spelling and other subjects.I was not expecting results, wow was I surprised! He has just taken off like a rocket. He can't get enough. He finally says that the subject matter makes sense to him and it is truly just the way in which it was being presented to him.I am a believer.I have a right brained child!

5-0 out of 5 stars A teacher can still learn
Yes, a teacher can still learn - grow - and become even moresuccessful!Thank you Jeffrey Freed for opening my eyes (I already knew there were different ways to reach children, but now I have something to share in writing)! This book has wonderful ideas on how to teach those students who just don't "get" the methods we are using. Is something wrong with these students? No, however, there is something wrong with the way we are teaching!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very insightful
While I don't agree with all of the author's ideas, I found the book very interesting and read it quickly. The best thing about the book is that it looks at ADD children in a very positive light and highlights their unique abilities. It is targeted for a certain type of child, however. My daughter fit about 85% of the author's criteria and I found it not only helpful, but hopeful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting, life-changing reading experience
Alice Miller's "The Body Never Lies" is a provocation for those who are intent on denying that there is a relationship between how children are being treated and how they, later as adults, live their lives. They will fight against this book with those sad beliefs, which they learned in their childhoods and never questioned or left behind. But for those, for whom these connections are a fact and who are willing to explore their own past, their own lives and childhood suffering, this book provides great relief, even liberation. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book solved my problems with my difficult child
I have a young child who tends to get very aggressive when trying to tell me that his needs aren't being met.Until recently, he never listened to anything I asked of him. I was at my wits end.I'd tried everything. Things only got worse.
5-0 out of 5 stars BECOME THE PARENT YOU WISH TO BE
Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves is unlike other parenting books and much more effective. I have read good advice before, but couldn't change my habits. This book gives the tools of personal growth that make it possible to be the loving mother that I really want to be. This is not esoteric philosophizing; it is useful advice with a five-step approach that is eminently doable. Each step is illustrated with story after story about parents who discover, or rediscover, the power of love as they replace controlling parenting techniques with gentle nurturing.

While many books discuss attachment parenting and its benefits to babies and young children, this book helps us understand the benefits to older children and teens. This book is an ARGUMENT, not just emotional postulation. It is truly a must-read for any parent wanting to understand the significance of peer-orientation in our culture, and how to avoid the many pitfalls that it can lead to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reframes the task of parenting in terms of attachment
While I see the central problem Neufled & Mate discuss here more in terms of the problem of attachment voids faced by children in our socities/families today rather than in terms of "peer attachment" problems, the end result for parents may be the same.We need to foster our children's attachments to us in order for us to help them realize their potential as happy, independent, well adjusted adults. And there are lots of things that can happen to make fostering those essential relationships very difficult.Take a close look at this book and give your family every advantage possible to hold on to your kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most useful books I've ever read.
I could write a million words about why this book is so great.I have read several parenting books and this one is by far the best.It is full of profound insights into our society and youth. It validated many of my ideas that are considered unusual in our culture. If every parent in America would read this book there would be a dramatic positive change for all people. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a really great book, but probably only if you are scientific-minded and want some detail on the author's studies of exercise during pregnancy. There are no specific recommendations for exercises - that is not the point of this book. Another book, "Walking Through Pregnancy and Beyond", will provide that (although maybe not for competitive athletes). "Exercising Through Your Pregnancy" has a lot of important information. The author's study showed that while exercising during pregnancy provides multiple benefits to both mother and baby before and after birth, STOPPING exercise during pregnancy can actually cause more problems and heavier babies than if you had not exercised at all during pregnancy. On days that I don't feel like working out, this single piece of information motivates me to do at least 30 minutes. You've got to keep it up! Also, he challenges the standard recommendation that a pregnant woman not exceed a heart rate above 140, as genetic factors, age, and other things can affect a person's normal resting heart rate, making 140 pretty arbitrary. He outlines other ways of ensuring that you don't overexert yourself and your baby. Dr. Clapp also has sections on exercise as it relates to fertility, early pregnancy, new exercisers, lactation, and the postpartum period. There are tables and graphs of his results, in case that turns you off (but they are illustrative, not technical). Check it out at the library first if you're not sure.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ah, I'd rather read something else
I feel as though I was looking for a book to confirm the fact that you can do more exercise during pregnancy. I am having my first baby in February and was very active before but have taken it a notch or two down because of all of the precautions out there. This book started out slow and it was painful to read at first but I do have to say that it made me a little more at ease about exercising but listening to your body is key. I think that is what it all comes down to and that is the rule I go by each day when i go to the gym.

5-0 out of 5 stars the only exercise book that really had answers
I work out 5-6 days a week, 1 to 2 hours a day. I weight train, do cardio of all sorts, and do power yoga. After I got pregnant I looked everywhere for a book on exercising while pregnant that spoke to my situation. All I could find was extremely conservative advice(such as walking 5 days a week for 20 minutes...) and in some places a vague hint that if one had been exercising before the pregnancy it was perhaps o.k. to continue with a similar routine. None of this advice came with any real data to back it up. Frustrating.

Bloom's study helps those seriously interested in understanding the differences between different kinds of talent and it can be nurtured. The study describes how the nurturance of gifted athletes and musicians takes adifferent path than that of intellectually gifted young people. It pointsout that the families do not choose between the intellectual and athleticareas but follow the talents manifested by their children. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas
I found this book to be a very useful resource. It covers a wide variety of themes, each of which includes ideas for learning in several different domains.A reference list of other resources pertaining to each theme is also given. My only quarrel with this book is that the activities are often correlated rather than integrated, so that there is an absence of depth to some of the lessons. However, I would recommend this book anyway as it provides some excellent ideas for enriching centers with theme-related material, and is good as a starting-off point for planning more integrated lessons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative Resources for the EC Classroom is Awesome!
I highly recommend this book. I'm a full-time student in Early Childhood Education. One of my co-operating teachers shared this book with me. I had to order it! It has a lot of great ideas. All themed based. I've used many of them all ready, and look forward to using more in the future. If you are a student and don't use this book in your classes. I recommend you buying it. It has many wonderful, easy ideas for you for your projects. If you are a teacher, and are looking for some new ideas. This book has it. From beginning to end. It's a great book! Buy it and you'll be very happy you did. Enjoy!
