5-0 out of 5 stars Real life stories you can relate to
This is one of many breastfeeding books I read when I had my first child. What was great about this book were the stories of diffent women's experiences with breastfeeding. It answers so many question about the beast feeding experience and validates many feelings. From problems with latching on, sore breasts, how often to expect to nurse--this book covers everything in little stories.Unfortunately I let a friend borrow my copy and haven't seen it since.I guess she enjoyed it.The book is also not overly fanatic about breast feeding. It doesn't make you feel as if you are a horrible mother if breastfeeding turns out not to be for you.I truly believe that breastfeeding is the best thing you can do for your baby, from a nutritional standpoint as well as an emotional one.I was able to nurse my daughter for the first 18 months of her life, and I credit that to all of the support from the hospital as well as books like this one.I highly recommend this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow and much more up to date than other B-F books
I agree.I bought my copy in the bookstore after combing through all the others on the shelf.I'm still referring to it today with my first baby.I am ordering it now as a gift through Amazon to send to my cousin who willbe breastfeeding for the first time. This book is much more informative, provides a more holistic versus clinical approach and explains more of theemotional as well as scientific benefits of breastfeeding.Recentpublishing makes it much more timely for this new movement back tobreastfeeding.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last, a holistic guide to breastfeeding!
There are many, many books out there on breastfeeding management but this is the first book I've seen that balances the technical with the emotional. I have been searching for a long time for a guide to natural therapies for breastfeeding mothers and I've finally found it! The Author includesinformation on breath awareness, massage, aromatherapy, homeopathy, BachFlower remedies, and much more. With practical how to imformation and anample resource appendix this is a book well worth owning - it sits on myshelf right next to my Womanly Art Of Breastfeeding! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Making it easy for breastfeeding moms to give up
This book makes it easy for breastfeeding moms to give up and not feel guilty about it.If you think you will cop out and want to feel better about yourself, buy this book ...and do what's best for your child.

1-0 out of 5 stars incorrect breastfeeding information
This book contains information that is SO INACCURATE that the author should be put on notice to write about other subjects and leave breastfeeding to the experts like La Leche League, Dr. Sears or Jack Newman. Her errors and bad advice are too numerous to catalogue and are sure to help a new mother FAIL at breastfeeding. So, if you really don't want to be successful at breastfeeding, then read this book.Otherwise, read The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding by La Leche League, The Breastfeeding Book by Dr. William Sears or the new Ultimate Book of Breastfeeding Answers by Dr. Jack Newman. All of those are excellent.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT Helpful if your REALLY want to Breastfeed

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent history of public health and breast feeding
This is really a wonderful book.As a parent and someone interested in health in general, I learned a lot. First off, the research behind the book is incredible: the author has combed diaries, old magazines and tons of public records to reconstruct what life was like for women and families at the turn of the century. You really get a feel for the pressures that women were under from society, from changes in culture, from advances in medicine.Even though it's a complicated story, Wolf has broken it down into easy-to-understand chapters. There's a chapter devoted, for example, to the urban milk supply, and how the absolutely filthy conditions in which milk was brought from the country to the city contributed to the dramatically high infant-mortality rate. There's a chapter on wet nurses -- a fascinating story in and of itself as it describes how some women were forced by poverty to sacrifice the health and well-being of their very own children just so they could get a job nursing the baby of a more well-to-do mother. 2-0 out of 5 stars extremely boring, could not finish it, loaded with dry facts
I was very disappointed in this book. As a breastfeeding counselor I have a personal interest in the history of infant feeding in America. I truly am interested in how and why Americans got away from breastfeeding in the early 1900s.5-0 out of 5 stars Great history og public health and Chicago

2-0 out of 5 stars How her breasts bored the world
This book starts out promisingly, then degenerates into an ordinary (and rather dull) personal journal.I am a nursing mother of a 2 month old, and was intrigued by the subject, but disappointed by the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I really loved this book! The first time I read it was when I was pregnant - it made me laugh, and I enjoyed getting insight into what motherhood would be like. The second time was when my son was 4 months old.It was even funnier then, because I had experienced many of the things she talked about and could relate (though I had a much easier time breastfeeding than she did). Her writing style is easy and conversational, as if she were telling a friend about her experiences.
5-0 out of 5 stars Full of humor
Lisa Wood Shapiro did an excellent job writing this book. What a fantastic job of telling the story of her adventures and misadventures with motherhood. I felt as though I could really relate to the experiences she had. Lisa had me laughing uncontrollably the whole book, and I highly recommend it to anyone who also wants to laugh while reading a great book about motherhood. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Honest and Realistic!!
I wish I would have read this book during my first pregnancy. I listened to a lot of the die hard pro-breast Mom's and felt like a huge failure after breastfeeding did not work out for me the first go 'round. I appreciate that he talks A LOT about how tired you will be and how latching on is not a given for all babies. If I would have heard more of that the first time, I probably could have convinced myself that I was not a failure for not being able to work through the cracked, bloody nipples. As well as-the feedings that were non-stop.My daughter gained 1 pound and 2 ounces the first 3 days we were home from the hospital!! I was not prepared for the energy drain but I KNEW it was working, although mentally it was killing me.
4-0 out of 5 stars I think this book was really misunderstood
I read this book, and I didn't get from it the message that others did at all. I think that the book suggests that many women don't nurse at all because they know their employers will be unsupportive of pumping, and Dr. Wilkoff suggests that nursing for 3 months is better than none. I'm personally a round-the-clock sort of breastfeeding mom and nurse my children into toddlerhood, but I was not offended by this book. I think some of the reviewers of this book were choosing to focus only on the parts of it that they disagreed with. There's a lot of good in this book too: he condemns having formula samples in the house for new mothers as he rightly thinks it sabotages breastfeeding, he thinks nursing until babies start solids would be preferable, and he does indeed offer several suggestions for getting employers to be supportive of pumping. But he also acknowledges the sad reality that some employers will not make it feasible enough for women to nurse.4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed It
I thought this book was very realistic.I don't feel as though it discouraged me from breastfeeding in the workplace but it did make me feel as though I would not be a failure if I decided not to.Yes, we all know breast is best, and it is best for the first year but it is also our CHOICE!And some breastmilk is better than no breastmilk. If you want to give breastfeeding your best possible shot and you are returning to work, I suggest this book.Don't be swayed by all of the negative reviews here, my guess is that they are mostly from women who feel as though formula is not an option. ...
