5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't have done it without it!
I would recommend this to any nursing mother. I bought the book and had it memorized by the time my daughter came into this world. I had a lot of questions, and it always had the answers. I never had to go digging around for another book because it didn't have what was looking for.
5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Nursing Book Out There!!
I received this book as a gift and it has been beside my bed for 6 months (ever since my daughter was born). It is great as a reference to look up answers to quick questions or concerns.I would also recommend reading this book from start to finish before baby arrives... I wish I had.I cannot say enough good things about Kathleen Huggins and her book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Actual useful advice!
This book was by far the most useful nursing book I read (the others were the Sears book, the LLL book, and BF made simple). When I had a specific problem, this book actually gave a list of different things to do to try to resolve the problem - exactly what I wanted!-and there's always an accompanying discussion if you want know more.I would say this book is also the most clinical of the books, and I consider that a good thing.I (and I think most people who bother to buy a nursing book) know BF is a good choice before buying these books.I don't need a hard sell. This book simply lays out the facts in an easy to understand way.Highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars New edition has great updates
THE WOMANLY ART is an important book to me. I read an old edition while pregnant. Upon reading this new edition of the book with a baby in my arms, I fell in love with the words because they described mothering through breastfeeding and all the other concepts that I have since lived. I found information about flat nipples and nipple shields that was absent from earlier editions, and wished I had this information while I was struggling with a newborn. I reread other pages that provided the classic La Leche League information and now fully process the time-tested information. Information is factual and carries the spirit of mothering through breastfeeding with it.

2-0 out of 5 stars No help increasing milk supply
Yes, I agree with all the comments about this book being very smug about non-breast feeding or formula-supplamenting mothers. My problem with this book was the very clear indication on the back cover that there was information on how to increase milk supply. The was absolutely NO such information ANYWHERE in this book, and I read it cover to cover. The closest thing I found were a few reassuring comments that as long as your baby is gaining weight, and your diet is good, you should be fine. As a working mom who is pumping daily I have recently noticed a decline in my milk, and while their reassurance is very nice, what I need is ACTUAL practical advice. This book was seriously irritating.

5-0 out of 5 stars A breastfeeding mother's guide.
I purchased this book as a gift for a woman I work with who is pregnant and wanting to breastfeed her baby.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Breastfeeding Questions Answered
I purchased this book after I began my journey to becoming a lactation consultant. Though I never read the book from cover-to-cover, I have covered nearly every page (some pages over and over!) over the last several months in my effort to support nursing mothers within the LLL philosophy. The information in this book is thorough and simply written, though at times I have considered it poorly organized. The BF Answer Book is probably the best book for helping breastfeeding moms. I hope to continue to learn from this book as I explore it's pages while providing support and information to mothers who need it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Breastfeeding Answer Book
I have read a few breastfeeding books and resources in the past few years.I am a mother of four children, all of whom have been breastfed.I can say without a doubt that this book is AWESOME!It has more information and more detailed answers than any other book, resource, or class that I've seen.I highly recommend it to anyone who is breastfeeding or considering breastfeeding. It's a really great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Answers all your questions!
I loved this book!I bought this when having difficulty nursing my second baby. After having experience with nursing, I was surprised after 8wks and visiting with a lactation consultant (which cost me $75) I was still having discomfort.I found this book to be a great resource!

This is a very good reference book for anyone who works in the field of lactation. It is not a book that you should read cover to cover; instead, it is a reference tool.Read more

FAST AND ON TIME. GREAT SELLER. WILL DO BUISNESS AGAIN. THANK YOU

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!-- a nursing guide with one foot in the real world
With an adopted 10-month old at home, my first pregnancy turned out to be twins. I loved my 40+ hour management level job and did not want to leave. I did not think nursing was an option, and quite frankly wasn't that interested in it anyway. This book changed my mind. It is down-to-earth and gave me the grounding I needed to think creatively and yet realistically about what I needed and what my children needed from me. I ended up nursing my twins almost exclusively for 2.5 years. Best decision I've ever made. I highly recommend this book and purchase it for every pregnant mom I know who inquires about nursing and managing a challenging work-filled life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Guidelines
This book I feel was very helpful to me even though my son was born early and breastfeeding attempts were unsuccessful. The book gives great insight to nursing successfully as well as working successfully while nursing, and I will pass this book to all of my friends that are pregnant and returning to work mothers in the future. I think first time breastfeeding mothers returning to work are very frightened and even intimidated by the thought and really need someone to help lay a timetable down (of course as a baseline, everyones life is a bit different so all will need to make some adjustments). this book really helped to give that needed structure and to let you know it is possible. The only thing I disliked about this book was the amount of talk about co-sleeping and some other opinions that get fluffed around, at times it feels a tid bit pushy, but if you can get past those frequent comments and hint arounds then its no problem. HIGHLY reccomend this book to returning to work mothers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I bought this book when trying to decide if I wanted to breastfeed. I was scared to death from all the horror stories I'd heard about bleeding, painful nipples, and starved babies. It has put my mind at ease. I am now confident I can breastfeed. It answered all my questions and concerns and then some I had never even thought of. Highly recommended for anyone who is breastfeeding, or even thinking about it. ( I also like breastfeeding for dummies)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book and resource
Great book.I recieved this book at the breastfeeding class I took before I delivered.I used this book all the time when I was nursing, it helped answer a lot of middle of the night questions.I read it before I had my baby, but then I used the table of contents and index after I had the baby to answer a lot of questions I was having.I highly recommend this book to anyone going to have a baby and plans to nurse. ... There's a huge difference between "natural" and "easy"--just ask a woman who chose natural childbirth! Breastfeeding is certainly the most natural option for feeding your little one, and repeated studies have shown its nutritive value. But that doesn't make it easy, and not all medical practitioners are trained to answer questions about the process. In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars TOTAL AUTHORITY on BREASTFEEDING!
People, do not bother with ANY other books on breastfeeding!I swear this is all you'll need!I tell everyone that I wasted a bunch of time with La Leche League's guide, and all those others out there, even Dr. Sears (just get his Baby Book instead)... And I feel like short of mastitis, I went through it ALL!And no one, NO ONE, will tell it like it is with regards to THRUSH, which I really battled with -- in fact no other books, pamphlets, you-name-it, even TOUCH the subject, which really afflicts SO MANY women!and it is curable and DOES NOT have to mean the end of your breast-feeding days! Nothing really does!read DR. JACK and you'll see! Then you'll be buying this book for everyone else like I've been doing ever since!

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me...???
This book was such a disappointment to me! The majority of her information is completely inaccurate. I would have expected a little more coming from a dietician. The only thing I can say about this book on a positive note, is a few of the recipes are okay and she supports breastfeeding. I felt like this book was/is right with our culture...focused on how mom looks after having a baby. New mom's have enough on their plate worrying about how to adjust to this little person who's taken over their life. They don't need another book emphasizing how their body should look or perform. Every mom is different, I know.I just think mothers should be focused on breastfeeding successfully and loving their sweet baby, not trying to fit into prepregnancy pants 2 weeks postpartum. A lot has changed in 14 years and new mom's need to realize that as well...this book is 14 years old. Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!!
This book was the best. There is so much useful information inside that is easy to understand and written in such a way it reads guickly and you don't have to dwell over each page to grasp it.It had the information I couldn't find other places about the nutrients you need while breastfeeding and how to know that you can eat healthy and lose the weight without having to worry about depriving your child or yourself of the wonderful bond of breastfeeding. ... This book is full of encouragement and information. When everyone is telling you it's too hard to breastfeed twins, this book tells you that you can, you should, and practical tips on how to.I found it extremely helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY one out there about nursing multiples
Nursing ONE baby can be challenging, but when they come two at a time, you need to call in the big guns. Although a previous reviewer scoffs at the fact that Gromada had her twins over 20 years ago,she fails to realize that the author has been working in her field(lactation consulting,La Leche League leader, renowned expert on twins and public speaker, etc;see karengromada.com)for over 25 years and consults with mothers of multiples daily.

Wonderful book.Wonderful ideas, great support, and validated things I thought, but weren't sure could happen.Believe me, the phrase, "It's a twin things" is so true!My first daughter never dreamed of doing some of the things my twins do.They really know how to accomplish a task together.

5-0 out of 5 stars BestBreastfeeding reference out there
I totally disagree with the person that put this book down and touted the Dr. Sears book. I too have both books....in the early stages of breastfeeding when you and your little one are still trying to figure out everything....the Sears book is useless. It doesn't help you trouble shoot any problems you might be having...nor does it tell you things you might run into or pitfalls you might expect. This book however was my right hand guide. Any question or problem I ever had I always found a viable answer or suggestion in this book. That helped me continue on because I could carry on knowing everything was ok or that I should consult somebody for help. I think I am a testament to how helpful this was since I am still breastfeeding my daughter happily at 14 months and just starting to wean. My origional goal was only 6 months. Buy this book it is extremely helpful. Breastfeeding is not an easy thing even if your baby takes to it correctly right away. You have to be determined to make it work before the baby gets here. If you just say you'll try it...you will fail at it or give up fast most times I think. Any kind of helpful resource is a push in the right direction for the good of your baby. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish this book were out of date and irrelevant!
This definitive history of formula, pharmaceutical companies and infant death is highly readable, despite its depressing topic. While it would be comforting to think that formula fed babies only die at a higher rate than breastfed in places without access to clean water that just ain't so -- never has been, never will be, and the companies which make formula know that. Which is why the code of advertising (which formula -- which is to say, pharmaceutical -- companies continue to violate) adopted in the early years of the boycott applies around the world, including in the U.S.
5-0 out of 5 stars It strengthened the Lactivist in me!
This book should be on every mother-to-be's MUST READ list. It goes into great detail about breastfeeding in other cultures, how the medical establishement derails a mothers efforts before she can even get started, and the overly agressive marketing tactics of the formula manufactures.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for all concerned with breastfeeding and public health!

Reviews (21)

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and practical
You may see a few discussions amongst these reviews about certain techniques suggested by this book. Some people take offence that certain techniques are suggested at all.But the most valuable thing I found about this book is the fact that it presents *all* possible options/methods available for weaning of various agegroups, in a very comprehensive and objective manner - and leaves the decision up to the reader to apply what suits them, their situation and their baby/child best.It has a lot of practical solutions and presents the pros and cons for every method and agegroup in a very unbiased way, therefore assisting decision-making based on a reader's own unique situation.Kathleen Huggins' style of presentation reminded me of the style used by Elizabeth Pantley (author of 'no cry sleep solution') in presenting all possible options in a non-judgemental and non-biased way.Using this book enabled me to wean my daughter without any tears or trauma at all (to her or me) and helped me decide/recognise if/when she was ready for weaning.I found this book a lot more objective than the Norma Jane Bumgarner book 'Mothering your Nursing Toddler' which is wonderful but is mostly only useful if you want to reinforce or take on a 'wait until the child weans themself' (read = 4 years plus) view of weaning.Kathleen Huggins presents the possibility (among others) that just as a child would eventually potty train themself (albeit a lot later than if shown what to do), they are also perfectly capable of weaning earlier than if not guided to do so.Similarly she presents many caring and gentle ways to guide your baby/child to wean earlier than if not 'guided' in any way and left to wean for themselves - provided they are ready. While presenting views on weaning at both ends of the scale such as'martrydom'/'earth-mother'/'child-led' and 'let them cry/don't let the child control'/'mother-led' etc., Huggins also provides a middle-ground so that the reader gains enough options and information to adopt a weaning style that suits themself, their situation and their child.

1-0 out of 5 stars "How I Can Sell You on Breastfeeding Until Your Child is 4"
I was so offended by this book.I found it incredibly condescending. It was basically a list of reasons why one might stop breastfeeding and instead of offering the best way to wean under the circumstances Huggins proceeds to handle the reason like an objection and then tells you your reason isn't good enough and comes up with reasons why and how you can keep nursing. The decision of when to wean is incredibly personal and I don't need this author to tell me why my reason isn't good enough. My baby is nine months old and I am planning on weaning around her first birthday.I was looking to this book to show me techniques on how to wean gently, not to make me feel guilty for not nursing until she's four! She also tries to make it seems like giving your baby formula is akin to giving them poison - please!Don't waste your money!

2-0 out of 5 stars Great for cultural perspectives,Poor for actual weaning.
I actually give this book 5 stars for historical and cultural/social perspective on nursing and weaning but 2 stars for the actual process of weaning. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is about how a child will wean himself
This book is about how a child will eventually wean himself--NOT how you can wean your child. It provides support to a mother as she nurses her growing child--both to help the mother understand the child's needs and to help her "fend off" well-meaning onlookers who don't understand the mother's choice to let the child decide on when to wean.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful understanding breastfeeding as a whole
This is a book that one should read even when you are just starting out with breastfeeding, since it does provide some feedback from other mothers about some of the frustrations experienced at certain stages. I am one of those mothers who have been wanting to wean almost from day one because my little boy turned out to be a grazer - even now at eleven months feeding 2 - 2.5 - hourly. However, HE didn't agree with the concept and absolutely refused to take a bottle.
4-0 out of 5 stars more about NOT weaning than weaning
As a mother nursing a 2+ year old I am used to the question, "How long do you plan on doing that for?" and the occasional raised eyebrow or odd look. Modern society seems to view extended breastfeeding as unconventional and radical. Many people that know about my breastfeeding relationship with my daughter also assume that I share a bed with my children, finger-paint and eat tofu all day! Perhaps the disapproving and sometimes hostile attitude towards extended breastfeeding was the breeding ground for such an assertive book that is more about NOT weaning than weaning. At the time that I took an interest in the book I was grappling through some challenges with my own extended breastfeeding with my younger daughter. Though I certainly don't think weaning is something you would buy a straightforward guidebook for, How Weaning Happens was an inspiring book to read. The book is a collection of personal stories and experiences combined with information about natural weaning and weaning at mother and child's pace.I would suggest this book as counteraction to the negative views of extended breastfeeding... perhaps something to leave out on the coffee table when the disapproving neighbors or in-laws are coming by! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
As a woman who breastfed eight children (including her adopted child!) Martha Sears is exactly the sort of person you want writing books about breastfeeding. Her tone is loving and gentle while still offering a wealth of information and troubleshooting tips. Like most women I know, I found breastfeeding to be much more complicated and difficult at first than I'd anticipated. The first couple weeks were rough for me and I give much credit to this book (as well as my lactation consultant) for getting me through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Any New Mom!!!
I used this book as a reference when nursing my own children, now give the book as a gift to my friends and relatives who are expecting a baby.
1-0 out of 5 stars Hurt More Than It Helped
I was given this book as a gift and was eager to exclusively breastfeed my baby. The first few days after we got home from the hospital, however, things were not working right.I fed and fed him, yet he never seemed satisfied.I scoured The Breastfeeding Book for information about low production levels, and basically all it said was that it is rare and not to worry about it--just breastfeed frequestly and your supply will increase.I did just that, yet my supply never increased. My baby was so hungry and I was frantic and felt completely inadequate! This book basically implied that giving your baby any formula is just short of child abuse and breastfeeding is the only option, no matter what.Thank goodness a lactation consultant finally worked with us, determined that, in fact, my supply was too low for my baby, and recommended I supplement with formula. My baby was so happy after that, my supply actually increased after I started supplementing, and we are still doing a combination 4 months later. There is no way we would have stuck with it this long if I had followed the advice of this book and just breastfed.I give this book one star because, although there is some useful information, it makes moms feel like failures if they can't or don't want to breastfeed for a year or more.Being a mom is so much more than how you feed your baby! ... This book is an incredible resource, and not just for those breastfeeding after reduction surgery. It contains wonderful breastfeeding info from how the breast works to herbs/drugs available to increase supply.
5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT !!
This book was extrememly helpful. Not only did it provide medical information, but real life stories of BFAR mothers. It explained in detail how to increase your milk supply, how to suppliment, and what you can expect emotionally. It gives you advice on what to do before baby is born, how to handle things after baby comes. Well thought out, Well referenced, Well written.A necessary book to have if you want to nurse your child after having breast surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable if you plan to BFAR
I was so glad to find this book while pregnant with my son! It really answered all the questions I had about attempting breastfeeding after my breast reduction surgery. There is much good information about the various reduction techniques and likliehood of successful BFAR (breastfeeding after reduction) with each technique. The book includes personal stories with a variety of BFAR experiences as well as tips for increasing and, if necessarly, supplementing your milk supply. It really focuses on the aspects of breastfeeding that are unique to those who have undergone breast reduction surgery, and, in companion with a good book on breastfeeding basics, is all you need! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration and how-to in one
I first read this book while breastfeeding my daughter and hoping for another child. It was inspirational, yet factual at the same time. I always enjoy reading stories from real moms, such as those sprinkled throughout this book. Now that my second child is here, I found myself using tips from it during the 5 months we tandem nursed. Some ideas will be helpful even for moms who don't intend to tandem nurse or nurse through a pregnancy, such as about setting gentle limits and dealing with twiddling. Hilary Flower made tandem nursing seem normal and possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent information
This book is so informitive and helpful.I was so stressed out when I found out I was pregnant because I am still nursing my eighteen month old.I would recommend to anyone who wants to continue nursing while pregnant.I am hoping to tandem nurse when my baby is born.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a parenting/pregnancy book with practical advice and a sense of humor
I love this book. I was on a reading strike in my 4th and 5th month of pregnancy because I was sick of parenting books that make one feel guilty if you don't do something or another. This book keeps giving you facts, how-to's and advice all the way through but peppers it with funny stories and a sense of cheer leading. Rather than guilting me into breastfeeding she has me even more committed to doing it and wanting to do it rather than just thinking I should. I think the one reviewer who says this book is all about pumping only read the last 50 pages. This book starts with looks at breastfeeding throughout the world and drops in facts and studies about how much healthier and smarter your baby will be if breast-fed. Then she tells you all the reasons why it will help you stay healthier too. Next she goes step by step through the how to. Ooodles of suggestions are made for various breastfeeding difficulties you may or may not encounter. I borrowed this book from a friend but I am going to have to get my own copy. I have read many parts of it to my partner out loud and we are both committed to this wonderous process. I wish this author had other parenting books because this is my kind of read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Best for a reluctant spouse or partner, not for momma
I'm 8 months pregnant with my first baby and I'm very committed to breastfeeding.I bought this book on someone's recommendation hoping to pick up some tips and learn as much as I can beforehand. Most of this book is dedicated to pumping up the egos of women who decide to breastfeed, especially those who keep going for over a year.I kept waiting for the how-to and practical advice. The actual how-to information only covers one chapter. And there is extensive use of the word "flanged."I don't know about you, but that doesn't say very much to me.The pictures are either the same or very similar to the illustrations in Dr. Sears's Baby Book, which contains all of the same factual information, plus more.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Read
When my friend handed this book down to me I thought "A whole book on breastfeeding? How much can there possibly be to learn? And how will I ever make it through the whole book?"

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for the nursing mom who favors natural remedies
I'm so glad to have this resource as a part of my library. After nursing my first child for 20 months and my second child for 27 months and counting, this is something I should have bought as soon as it was published. There's a quick index in the back with each herb listed alphabetically which really came in handy last weekend when I needed to verify the safety of an herbal tea for treating cold and flu symptoms.Don't wait, add it to your collection today!

5-0 out of 5 stars Herbal Remedies & Excellent Advice on Breastfeeding
The main focus of "The Nursing Mother's Herbal" is Breastfeeding. Herbal remedies are also included. 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource for moms on natural remedies!
