4-0 out of 5 stars It is adorable
This book has really cute illustrations. I really loved this book I just finished it. It is really bright and colorful. There is so much room to put stuff. The only thing it lacks is a month by month of the first year. I love that it has places for both mom and dad to write letters to the baby and pockets to put things. It would be perfect except that the only month by month breakdown of the first year is only two pages and it provides just enough space to write height, weight and one sentence about each month.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST!!!!
I love this book!!! I received several baby books for my first child none of which I was crazy about but I decided to go with Baby Love by Susan Branch, while it is cute and I like some of the things she suggests to include, it is designed more like a regular book with thin paper pages which makes it difficult to add things (even pictures) and to enter info into it because of the way it is organized.I received this book today for the child I am expecting in few months and I plan on purchasing another for my first child because it is so much better than Baby Love.It has a adorable frames for pictures and plenty of places to put them, a lot of storage pockets, sturdy pages, and plenty (but not too much) room to write stuff.I felt pressured to fill out the info requested in Baby Love, but I am excited to fill out the pages in this one.Best one I have seen so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect size and cuteness...
I bought this book for my second child, after searching and searching for just the right one. It's very colorful and decorated so fun -- great for either a boy or a girl (I'm using it for a boy).It has tons of topics to write about - all the big events, and even those that aren't so big. There is ample room to include a variety of photos, as well as other keepsakes and momentos. In addition, there are blank pages throughout for you to write a letter/message to your little one at different stages of their infancy.I like the fact that it covers 3 years, too.Now that my older child is over 3, I realize that was a good stopping point for all the "newness". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
I am now buying these books for friends who have kids this age. When my kids were small and would behave in a way I couldn't understand or find frustrating, I would open the age-appropriate book and --bang--there it was every time, detailing the behavior and explaining how it fit into the child's development. I read a lot of child development books but I thought these were by far the most realistic and helpful because they were researched with actual observation of the age group.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book!
I must say that this book is very accurate with respect to a 6 year old's behavior... In fact, there were many times when I laughed out of relief when I realized that the little one's behavior is "normal" for a six year old.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good insights if you can bridge the gap from 1979-2003
Overall, I liked the book. I was really looking for the 6-year-old version of "What to Expect: The Toddler Years." It didn't go into that degree of detail, but what it did cover was useful. The overriding message is that the time from 6.0-6.5 is volatile and often not much fun. Children are going through a lot of changes, very unsure of themselves, and need lots of reassurance (even when they're misbehaving terribly). The authors make the point that kids at that age typically aren't ready for advanced tutoring in morals, and suggest that simply ignoring a lot of the bad table manners, lying, pilfering, attitude, etc. can be the best approach. They observe that you can typically accomplish the same things better at age 7.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, depending on your parenting philosophy
Most baby parenting books fall into one of two categories: the old-school, "get the baby on a schedule" philosophy or the pro-co-sleeping, child-led "attachment parenting" philosophy.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Reference Guide and Helpful Resource
At first I did not use the book.I just created a routine and followed it, but now he is 4 months old and I use this book as a guide.I actually am reading it from beginning to end now.The book breaks down each chapter by situation, i.e.. routines, sleep, feedings; then within each chapter she talks about what happens at each age groups, i.e.. 0-3 months, 4-6, as so on.
1-0 out of 5 stars sad
I feel bad for the babies who are forced into what this book promotes.Nature did not intend babies to stick to such a regimented schedule, and parenthood was not intended to be so difficult and structured.I knew this book was not right when the author suggested that formula is just as good as breastmilk - this is absolutely NOT true and such unfortunate advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A difficult task made easier!
I am so thankful that I chose this book over others that deal with toilet training.I did not realize how teaching someone on the spectrum how to use the potty is very different in many ways, than someone who's not. This book deals with those issues. It brings to light some very important routines and activities to follow.Especially for someone who is new to the world of Autism, this is a book that I highly recommend that you include in your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars great ideas!
If you ever thought that toilet training was no big deal, try training a child with special needs...a whole different story. This book gives some great tips on how to go about it when the odds are against you.Determining readiness, common problems and solutions and developing a routine, are just some of the topics covered in this book.It is a must have for special ed. teachers as well as parents of individuals with autism and related disorders.Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful - explains what 's going on from your child's perspective
While we successfully opted to use a different training method to train our 4 year-old dughter- this book was very good at making sense out of our daughter's behavior. An autistic child can really be a challange to understand under normal curcumstances- the volume goes waaaaaay up when potty training. We would highly recommend this book to anyone getting ready to take on this very big job.Take what you can from this book and choose the method that feels most likely to work.Be committed.Chin up.You can do it.Good luck. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I recommend this book for anyone thinking about having having a baby or who is pregnant.Sometimes the best way to address tough issues is with humor and this book is hysterical.Jenny hits the nail on the head.

3-0 out of 5 stars Amusing, but not particularly innovative
There are some very funny and truthful parts of this book, but I wouldn't really call it revolutionary.Maybe most moms just don't sit around and talk honestly with their friends like I do.Not everyone will appreciate her humor or agree with some of her parenting choices.I was unimpressed with the chapter on breastfeeding. It came off as ill-informed and defensive rather than comical. But that's okay, to each her own. Overall McCarthy has a funny and self-deprecating way of writing that makes this very readable. If you're looking for light reading and some fun, this could be a good book for you.I'd recommend checking it out from the library or borrowing it from a friend though.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must read for Potential Moms
I bought this book for a funny and insightful look at what the first year may bring. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it and laughed myself into tears. It was a insightful and humorus look at what it might be like. It did not convince me to get pregnant but I am thinking about it and now have a better idea of what I'm in for. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for every family
I consider this book the bible when it comes to feeding my son. I started using it since he was 5 months old, and I loved the results! I never fed him from a jar, everything he ate was prepared by me and as a result, he has a great appetite and he enjoys all kinds of foods (even those other kids consider "yucky"). He's 2 and a half now, and he loves such foods as bell peppers, olives, fish, onions, spinach and zucchini. His favorite dessert is fresh fruit. Needless to say, he's really healthy. I also have a 4-month-old baby and I plan to use the recipes again. This book should be mandatory for every new mom! If I could give it 6 stars, I definitely would.

5-0 out of 5 stars First recipe a success!!!
My little one just gobbled up the first recipe I made from this book and I felt so good knowing she ate a wholesome homemade meal. I know exactly what was put into it, I controlled the seasoning and she just loved it!!! I also recommend Favorite Family Meals by Annabel Karmel as well for meals for the whole family. My family is eating so much healthier now thanks to Annabel's amazing cookbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
This book was excellent for our child from her pre weaning until toddler years. With just a little time in the kitchen, we were able to make some yummy recipes that saved us money and frustration. I especially like the toddler recipes because we found they could be used for the whole family. I have made about 30 recipes from this book so far and not one has taken me over one hour to make (unless you count marinading time on some of them). Highly recommended! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I love the recipes, but
I love the recipes but don't like the way the book is arranged. It is arranged by age but would be more useful and easy to use if arranged by food type. You have to use the index to find a particular food. The menus for the different age groups is pretty good.I think it is definitely worth buying. The Mommy Made cookbook is also pretty good.

2-0 out of 5 stars Save your $$ -- you'll find the same recipes online
Unless you don't have access to the internet all the time, this book is a waste of money. You can find the same recipes online for free.

5-0 out of 5 stars Miracle:A Celebration of New Life
The book filled with unbelievable moving pictures of babies and the lovely songs on the CD make this book choice one of my favorites.

2-0 out of 5 stars some almost ghoulish
Some of the Geddes photos in this book are a bit extreme - almost ghoulish - with babies under stretched sheer fabric - giving a weird, almost preborn appearance to the infant. Most of the photos, though, are beautiful and creative and just what we have come to expect from this photographer. The audio CD by Celine Dion is absolute perfection. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The 9 months preceding and the 12 months following child birth are exciting, trying, confusing times; they are the months of many questions. You wonder about your itchy palms, morning sickness, fetus development, home midwife or hospital doctor choices, what to eat, amniocentesis, miscarriages, labor painkillers, maintaining your physical and emotional health after childbirth, and, not least, how to care for your growing, developing baby. A live-in pediatrician would be nice; a 750-page comprehensive reference guide is the next best solution. It won't eliminate anxiety, but it's a reassuring presence, and a soothing source of answers and explanations. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but appears out dated....
I was very excited to receive this book, and started reading it immediately. It is a large hard-cover edition, certainly making it feel as though it has all the information you'll ever need.I'm sure this book has tons of good information, but when I got to the nutrition section, I knew that the food pyramid they showed was out of date.I hadn't checked the copyright when I ordered the book and was disappointed to see that it was published in 1994!12 years old is pretty old when it comes to any medical/health information, and so I'm returning it for the more updated "Mayo Clinic Guide to a healthy Pregnancy".I would have liked the new version to also cover the first year of life like this book, but I need up-to-date information, or I won't trust it.

My wife and I were recently blessed with the placement of three beautiful children (ages 2, 3 & 6) through Children's Protective Services.Having never been parents before, we were initially overwhelmed with the responsibility and chaos. We spent several tearful evenings wondering if we were cut out for the challenges of child-rearing.

I read Baby 411 and when I found out there was a Toddler 411, I had to go out and get it. These authors know there stuff and there advice is so straight forward and helpful. I have been looking for a book on what to do with my son who is amazingly active, stubborn, and in need of direction. Most books out there were of little or no help regarding discipline and this book is just the opposite. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has a toddler....and when I say toddler, I mean 12 months, NOT TWO YEARS OLD!!! Go out and buy a copy of this for your library. It will be so worth it. 2-0 out of 5 stars Just not that into it.
I also didn't like it. I don't see what the hype is about it personally. I thought Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy was great but this one doesn't tell you anything that common sense wouldn't! I say if you want to try it out, use the library. That way you aren't wasting your money on it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for making me feel normal!
I love Vicki's books, her sense of humour and sometimes outrageous comments help me feel sane in this otherwise insane parenting ride.If you're looking for the politically correct, always attached parenting book...please save yourself the bother, you'll only get hot under the collar! If, on the other hand, you struggle to do your best, have a load of parent baggage left over from your parents, feel life has got to be more amusing than it currently is...then read and enjoy!

2-0 out of 5 stars Ummm... what is everyone raving about?
I unfortunaely am not like every other person who has read this book . I too am one of those "Hippie" moms (not the worst thing in the world to be called, but I am insulted nonetheless)- although there are a few cute anectdotes in this book that make me smile I can only say that is why I gave this book two stars instead of one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Breastfeeding Questions Answered
I purchased this book after I began my journey to becoming a lactation consultant. Though I never read the book from cover-to-cover, I have covered nearly every page (some pages over and over!) over the last several months in my effort to support nursing mothers within the LLL philosophy. The information in this book is thorough and simply written, though at times I have considered it poorly organized. The BF Answer Book is probably the best book for helping breastfeeding moms. I hope to continue to learn from this book as I explore it's pages while providing support and information to mothers who need it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Parenting Handbook
Although some of the passages in this book and it's companion volumes are quite dated, it is still one of the most helpful parenting books that I have found in 25 years of teaching preschoolers. Many parents through the years have breathed a sigh of relief after reading these books which start with "Your One Year Old" and go all the way up to "Your Ten to Fourteen Year Old".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for parents of 5 year olds
When I gave birth, I hoped the manual would have popped out right after the baby, alas,I was wrong. We used The What to expect books until they no longer covered our age group. A local bookstore suggested Dr. Ames' books and they have been a GOD SEND! These books are the best from 2 to 5 so far they have been right on the money...Our son turns six in March and we are buying the 6 book tomorrow. My husband & I can not think of any other book(s) that has been more helpful or informative, than those written by Dr. Ames. Kudos to her and her easy to digest books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly helpful series of Books!
This entire series of books in very insightful. It is very helpful as a parent to get the "heads up" that these books provide. The questions of "what is going with my kid?" and "when will it end?" are answered leaving you with the feeling that you actually know what you are doing! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Comprehensive Overview of Childhood Development...
This review covers ALL of the "Your ___ Year Old" Books, from the Gesell Institute of Human Development; I own nearly all of them, from Your One Year Old up to Your Nine Year Old.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for Parenting Two Year Olds
This book is part of a series (Your .... Year Old) that is by far the best of all the parenting books I have read.If you are at your wit's end because of some disagreeable behavior your toddler is exhibiting, the odds are it is covered in this book and considered normal for the age.The author explains the reasons why toddlers tend to do these behaviors, and then gives you excellent tools to avoid instigating the behavior, and to manage the behavior if it does occur.
4-0 out of 5 stars slim and useful
more helpful in its hundred-odd pages than the whole massive "What to Expect, the Toddler Years" is in about 700. Read this one first, use the latter as a reference. ... Read more

They recommend beating infants with instruments. I do not believe in banning books, but this book should not be sold.
1-0 out of 5 stars A question about the cover.
The children on the cover are acting in an unsafe manner, hanging off the back of the horse-drawn buggy. Will they be beaten for this?

1-0 out of 5 stars Endangering Children
Michael Pearl writes a book which many parents, at sea about parenting and some of their children's behaviors, will follow to a Tonly to find that, at best, they are teaching their children that the biggest kid with the biggest stick (rod, whip) gets what they want. While teaching children to become either violent (for success) or fearful (traumatized) doesn't seem to be the Pearls' intent, this book reads like a seductive manual on child abuse. I'd note that while Michael Pearl aims this book at a Christian audience, neither he nor his wife, who co-authors the next volume with him, have credentials for writing from a truly Biblical perspective, nor from one versed in child development. Behaviorists have long shown that immediate reinforcement (hugs, prizes, goodies)for "desired behaviors" increases those behaviors, and that punishment is the weakest, least reliable method of altering behavior. Child specialists, whether Christian or not, have long known that secure nurturing on the part of the parent is absolutely key to the wellbeing of children, and that it is the healthy emotional bond between parent and child that ultimately is what makes children want to behave well and please their parents. Contrary to both Christian love and general information about good parenting, Pearls attempt to convince parents that corporal punishment is the way to go. Christian parents who read the gospels to guide their own lives will realize, as they read Pearl, that he relies on Biblical advise very selectively. The book is dangerous for parents who are at their wits end and need help withlearning how to parent well -- it denegrates children, and seduces parents with unsound, un-Christian, sadistic advice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Like having a pediatrician in your pocket
I've looked at a lot of child care books as both an RN and a mother of three, and this is hands down my favorite.

I had someone give me this book as a baby gift. And, let me say it was the best gift I received!! Julie, if you are out there - this has truly been a godsend.
