5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource...
After reading through zillions of homeschool books and websites-this book finally gave me what I feel is a great base to start from and recommends some other great books that I cannot wait to get.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life
As a SAHM with 8 children (college sophomore down to 2 yrs), I'd considered homeschooling now and again. I'd never felt compelled to actually begin homeschooling, however, until now.One of my children had to withdraw from public school (health issues), and thus began my real search for an appropriate curriculum.I read a number of books detailing different philosophies, but this was the first one that when I read it, I felt that I couldn't possibly send my children back to public school.
5-0 out of 5 stars great reference
this book is a great reference for home schooling

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, depending on your parenting philosophy
Most baby parenting books fall into one of two categories: the old-school, "get the baby on a schedule" philosophy or the pro-co-sleeping, child-led "attachment parenting" philosophy.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Reference Guide and Helpful Resource
At first I did not use the book.I just created a routine and followed it, but now he is 4 months old and I use this book as a guide.I actually am reading it from beginning to end now.The book breaks down each chapter by situation, i.e.. routines, sleep, feedings; then within each chapter she talks about what happens at each age groups, i.e.. 0-3 months, 4-6, as so on.
1-0 out of 5 stars sad
I feel bad for the babies who are forced into what this book promotes.Nature did not intend babies to stick to such a regimented schedule, and parenthood was not intended to be so difficult and structured.I knew this book was not right when the author suggested that formula is just as good as breastmilk - this is absolutely NOT true and such unfortunate advice.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good resource
I really liked the What to Eat when You're Expecting (an older edition of this book). This new edition has more recipes than the old book (and few, if any, repeats). I prefer the format of the old book for the nitty-gritty nutrition info.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent basic nutrition guide w/ GREAT recipes!
I took this book out of the library, but decided to buy it because I wanted to own the recipes. There is a great variety of recipes for all meals of the day and snacks. Most of the recipes are lower fat and sugar and higher fiber and protein versions of your favs. They don't elimate the bad things, but they do limit it and work in more whole grains and veggies then I normally do in my cooking.
3-0 out of 5 stars Reccomended, with reservations
After tossing the predecessor to this book in the garbage, I was a bit hesitant to fork over the cash for this new edition.I'm a bit ambivalent about my investment. It is a kindler, gentler version, though not as friendly as the Dr. William Sears series of books, which I highly reccommend for all things baby and family.(I wish they had a book on pregnancy nutrition . . . sigh)

5-0 out of 5 stars A difficult task made easier!
I am so thankful that I chose this book over others that deal with toilet training.I did not realize how teaching someone on the spectrum how to use the potty is very different in many ways, than someone who's not. This book deals with those issues. It brings to light some very important routines and activities to follow.Especially for someone who is new to the world of Autism, this is a book that I highly recommend that you include in your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars great ideas!
If you ever thought that toilet training was no big deal, try training a child with special needs...a whole different story. This book gives some great tips on how to go about it when the odds are against you.Determining readiness, common problems and solutions and developing a routine, are just some of the topics covered in this book.It is a must have for special ed. teachers as well as parents of individuals with autism and related disorders.Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful - explains what 's going on from your child's perspective
While we successfully opted to use a different training method to train our 4 year-old dughter- this book was very good at making sense out of our daughter's behavior. An autistic child can really be a challange to understand under normal curcumstances- the volume goes waaaaaay up when potty training. We would highly recommend this book to anyone getting ready to take on this very big job.Take what you can from this book and choose the method that feels most likely to work.Be committed.Chin up.You can do it.Good luck. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Someone who works and still found this book useful!
Some parents have the time to take their children to the grocery store and do all of those things, but some parents don't.Therefore, they would much rather spend their free time enjoying activities that everyone in the family(spouses included)can enjoy. Also if you have younger ones, this idea doesn't seem feasible. This book is helpful because it gives those parents with hectic schedules(especially those that have hired housekeepers to assist them) MORE options so they can raise fiscally responsible children also.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not for anyone who still works for a living
You do not *need* to give your children an allowance to teach them how to handle money. Really. The author's position is that you simply have to--and it makes you wonder if she also thinks it is okay to experiment with drugs in order to learn how to use them the "right" way.Just as you can educate children about the dangers of drugs without giving them any, you can also educate children about how to spend money wisely. One way is to take them grocery shopping with you, for example, and let them help you with calculating the best values for the money you have.
5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book along with your Dr. Spock!!
I work in the field of philanthropy have hosted many workshops on issues of children and money. The four hours I spent reading this book were the most educational and fruitful four hours I have ever spent on issues of how to raise children!! Whether your family is middle class or affluent, you will benefit from this book. In my opinion, the lessons offered by the Gallos on values and raising children go far beyond issues of money. I believe it is really a guide to raising well rounded and socially responsible children. I know I will return again and again to the chapters in this book both personally and professionally. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I recommend this book for anyone thinking about having having a baby or who is pregnant.Sometimes the best way to address tough issues is with humor and this book is hysterical.Jenny hits the nail on the head.

3-0 out of 5 stars Amusing, but not particularly innovative
There are some very funny and truthful parts of this book, but I wouldn't really call it revolutionary.Maybe most moms just don't sit around and talk honestly with their friends like I do.Not everyone will appreciate her humor or agree with some of her parenting choices.I was unimpressed with the chapter on breastfeeding. It came off as ill-informed and defensive rather than comical. But that's okay, to each her own. Overall McCarthy has a funny and self-deprecating way of writing that makes this very readable. If you're looking for light reading and some fun, this could be a good book for you.I'd recommend checking it out from the library or borrowing it from a friend though.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must read for Potential Moms
I bought this book for a funny and insightful look at what the first year may bring. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it and laughed myself into tears. It was a insightful and humorus look at what it might be like. It did not convince me to get pregnant but I am thinking about it and now have a better idea of what I'm in for. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for every family
I consider this book the bible when it comes to feeding my son. I started using it since he was 5 months old, and I loved the results! I never fed him from a jar, everything he ate was prepared by me and as a result, he has a great appetite and he enjoys all kinds of foods (even those other kids consider "yucky"). He's 2 and a half now, and he loves such foods as bell peppers, olives, fish, onions, spinach and zucchini. His favorite dessert is fresh fruit. Needless to say, he's really healthy. I also have a 4-month-old baby and I plan to use the recipes again. This book should be mandatory for every new mom! If I could give it 6 stars, I definitely would.

5-0 out of 5 stars First recipe a success!!!
My little one just gobbled up the first recipe I made from this book and I felt so good knowing she ate a wholesome homemade meal. I know exactly what was put into it, I controlled the seasoning and she just loved it!!! I also recommend Favorite Family Meals by Annabel Karmel as well for meals for the whole family. My family is eating so much healthier now thanks to Annabel's amazing cookbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
This book was excellent for our child from her pre weaning until toddler years. With just a little time in the kitchen, we were able to make some yummy recipes that saved us money and frustration. I especially like the toddler recipes because we found they could be used for the whole family. I have made about 30 recipes from this book so far and not one has taken me over one hour to make (unless you count marinading time on some of them). Highly recommended! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!
the one star reviews on here are done with the direct purpose to stop people from purchasing this book by advocates for the cessation of corporal punishment. But those who do so are not reading their bibles. As we know, if the world hates it, you're probably right on track. This book is a wonderful biblical reference to keep on hand as you begin to train up your young children. From beginning to end it is full of practical advice and very solid biblical backing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tripp's Wisdom Brings Happier, Healthier Children
Children are happier and homes are full of peace whenever God's ways are employed. Tedd Tripp will show you how to do that, backed up with many references about what God says on this topic in His Word. If you want the fruit of a peaceful home, raise your family God's way. I've used these methods to raise four delightful kids. God's ways are always the best!

1-0 out of 5 stars Disgusting nonsense spewed forth to justify the author's own sadist beliefs.
This is a disgusting manual that explicitly details how to begin abusing your children from the time of their birth. Anyone who thinks it is okay to spank an eight-month-old infant for "willful disobedience" obviously knows little to nothing about child development. However, the author knows plenty about beating children, and even more about hiding the evidence.

The Birth Book provides well balanced information that women *and* their support people need to be educated consumers of birthing medical care. (Keep in mind that any childbirth could potentially land a woman in the hospital.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book, Wonderful Author
You really need to read this book.It is a trusted guide written by an author with a normal approach to birth!
3-0 out of 5 stars More anti-hospital biased than seems, but good read
I bought this book with the impression that it fairly showed both sides of the natural vs. medicated birth debate. But it clearly leans toward natural births. But it is still a good read if you are trying to decide whether you are going natural or medicated. It makes the medical community seem more "evil" than reality. At least in my expereice, the hospital i gave birth at is very accomidating to the mother's wishes and encourages many natural practices first. SO this book can freak you out, and make you more fearful than need be. But yeah, this book helped me out, and was worth reading. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
It's clearly important to know what kind of food we eat. If you keep eating fast food, the author explains you will gain weight easily and it will be dangerous for your health.
5-0 out of 5 stars A pretty informative, balanced book
I got this book to be fair - I knew Peter Singer had a reputation as being on the fringe philosophy-wise, but not much more than that. I was intrigued by the title and had already read Fast Food Nation. So I read the book because I felt it was important to do so even if I disagreed with the writer. Well, I am glad I read the book and I plan to make changes based on the information I received from it. I plan to investigate for myself more. I was always happy with Wal-Mart's low food prices but I can see where much of the true cost is passed on to employees, the community, and the environment. If that sentence doesn't make sense to you - READ THE BOOK. Singer is evidently a vegetarian, but this book does not tell you to become one. Instead, he lays out several different types of consumers and shows you how to decide where YOU fall in the spectrum. The aim is to get you to THINK AND ASK QUESTIONS. And hey, if you want a big ole burger on a bun - he says it's your business. But he wants us to really understand what that burger MEANS.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love the recipes, but
I love the recipes but don't like the way the book is arranged. It is arranged by age but would be more useful and easy to use if arranged by food type. You have to use the index to find a particular food. The menus for the different age groups is pretty good.I think it is definitely worth buying. The Mommy Made cookbook is also pretty good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Older kids
I think this would be a highly useful book for parents of children 8 and older. There are activities for your child to do like rating their worry on a number scale that I felt were too abstract/advanced for my 4 year old.The general information about anxieties would be good for parents of children of any age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Ideas For Desperate Parents
My 8 year old daughter has a lot of issues with anxiety. Fortunately it hasn't gotten to the point where it's extreme but we want to give her tools so that it doesn't get that way. I myself have had issues with anxiety my whole life so I'm sure much of the problems stem from hereditary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tools and information based on the latest research
THE MISLABELED CHILD: HOW UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHILD'S UNIQUE LEARNING STYLE CAN OPEN THE DOOR TO SUCCESS provides parents, teachers and educators a fine, clear guide to children who are different, how diagnoses often fail, and how to look beyond labels to find the basics of a child's problems. Flaws in current methods of evaluation and diagnosis, especially by non-specialists, accompany tools and information based on the latest research along with first-hand accounts by the children themselves.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Eide's empower and inspire - A must own!
Brock and Fernette Eide are knowledgable, compassionate, experienced and speak to their audience in an authentic and easily understood voice. After years of doctor's, therapies, tests, etc - one conversation with them opened up a world of understanding that no other phd or professional could provide. More importantly - they can relate with the children in a positive manner. I've had to educate our school about learning differences. Every educator must read this book. There are so many children going through years of frustration in school that is unnecessary. This book will empower and inspire you.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must read!
In today's world of ADHD escapism, learning disability over-diagnosis and medication-happy classroom environments, The Mislabeled Child is a much needed and called for resource for frazzled and frustrated parents.

This book is truly a celebration of life.If you read this book and still think that allowing abortions on demand is okay, then your heart has grown too hard.dls

5-0 out of 5 stars Miracle:A Celebration of New Life
The book filled with unbelievable moving pictures of babies and the lovely songs on the CD make this book choice one of my favorites.

2-0 out of 5 stars some almost ghoulish
Some of the Geddes photos in this book are a bit extreme - almost ghoulish - with babies under stretched sheer fabric - giving a weird, almost preborn appearance to the infant. Most of the photos, though, are beautiful and creative and just what we have come to expect from this photographer. The audio CD by Celine Dion is absolute perfection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Parenting Book I've Read
The whole premise of the book is that love and common sense are not enough to raise most children well. Good parenting skills need to be *learned*. This book gives terrific examples of good and not so good parenting with each topic it covers. I've read at least a dozen parenting books (I have a very "highly spirited" 9 year old boy) and this one has made a big difference for me in my parenting. The emphasis on validating children's feelings somehow resonated better with me with this book than others, I think because the authors are particularly gifted in presenting the child's perspective. Using just a couple of the techniques in the book, I have been able to keep my son's emotional outbursts to a minimum -- and therefore my own, too. Better for me, and clearly better for him! I understand him better now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I Had This Sooner
My first visit with my daughter after I read this & I used one of the principles learned. Instead of her being mad at me for days because of my reaction to a situation, she was mad at me for 5 minutes.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a fabulous book about communicating effectively
I have often wondered what is the "right way" to respond to a child who is misbehaving and/or upset. Dr. Ginott answered my questions -- plus the many more that comes with having a child. Dr. Ginott teaches us how to communicate not just with our children, but also with other adults. This has been a very eye-opening experience to learn that the way I communicate with others, especially those who are closest to me, may not be the most effective. Dr. Ginott has a great way of teaching through example in his book. It's a great read and a book that I use constantly. It also makes a very good babyshower gift! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful designs, delightful photos!
This book has been a staple in my crochet library for a couple of years, since its publication.I think it is a wonderful book, chock full of novel ideas.I have always been happy to select a pattern from it to make for other people's children, but now that I have my own 4-month old daughter, I am thrilled to make these things for her!

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing
I found most of the patterns offered to be blatant retreads of early 1970's fare. The granny sqaures and heavy yarns look cheap and dated to me, not cute. The eyelash yarn bolero and fur trimmed coat are worthy inclusions, but not worth the price of the book. Also I was quite surprised at the lack of finishing information.Correct seaming and finishing can make the difference between a beautiful, handmade heirloom garment and a "tacky homemade" item; surely some time spent explaining the best techniques would be worthwhile?
2-0 out of 5 stars Bulky designs
I pre-ordered this book hoping it would provide lots of ideas and inspiration. The designs are bulky and blocky, and I have two boys and I would not put them in any of these designs.I own the Lesley Stanfield and Betty Barnden books and love them. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The 9 months preceding and the 12 months following child birth are exciting, trying, confusing times; they are the months of many questions. You wonder about your itchy palms, morning sickness, fetus development, home midwife or hospital doctor choices, what to eat, amniocentesis, miscarriages, labor painkillers, maintaining your physical and emotional health after childbirth, and, not least, how to care for your growing, developing baby. A live-in pediatrician would be nice; a 750-page comprehensive reference guide is the next best solution. It won't eliminate anxiety, but it's a reassuring presence, and a soothing source of answers and explanations. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but appears out dated....
I was very excited to receive this book, and started reading it immediately. It is a large hard-cover edition, certainly making it feel as though it has all the information you'll ever need.I'm sure this book has tons of good information, but when I got to the nutrition section, I knew that the food pyramid they showed was out of date.I hadn't checked the copyright when I ordered the book and was disappointed to see that it was published in 1994!12 years old is pretty old when it comes to any medical/health information, and so I'm returning it for the more updated "Mayo Clinic Guide to a healthy Pregnancy".I would have liked the new version to also cover the first year of life like this book, but I need up-to-date information, or I won't trust it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
This is absolutely the best resource for anyone trying to conceive, pregnant, with an infant or just curious about the entire process.
