5-0 out of 5 stars This is the tenth copy I have bought of this book!
Why?Because I give them away and wear them out with people I care about. It is that practical.OK, I admit to being a certified instructor in the Myers Briggs and a licensed children's counselor now working as a leadership development consultant, but TRULY the insights of Type have helped me to be a better parent (my most important role)to my beloved children.Try it.Take a MBTI assessment for yourself and learn about what each aspect of your own Type means.Follow thorugh with helping you child learn about their type. You will see the bridges to cross together that lead both of you into a richer, more productive relationship with greater joy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended
I bought this book before I had children because I was trying to understand my own personality a little better. Now I am trying to type my 2-year-old son-at least I am having a great time trying, even though I suspect I won't have any final answers until he is able to express himself a little more. Even at this age though, it helps me to identify different traits and not worry about the differences between him and other children in his environment. I think my son is an ESTJ and I am an INTP-so this book has helped to remind me that my son's way of relating to the world is different from mine, and that I need to consider his actions and needs in his context. Also, I like the fact that different learning styles, activity levels, and verbal abilities are discussed as well as the standard introversion vs. extroversion Myers-Briggs typing.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Important Tool for the Parental Toolbox
It is hard to underestimate the value of understanding personality type for developing effective business, spouse, peer, and parent-child relationships.I would speculate that many family conflicts are due to different personality types not being able to communicate with one another, or a child not fitting the behavior model established by the parents or siblings.Still, this is only one tool in the parental toolbox.Personality type should not be the only tool used, it doesn't mean that the tools of common sense and tradition are totally thrown out the window, yet it is a very useful tool and one that many parents are not aware of. 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential
Paul Ekman has become something of an academic celebrity due to the timeliness and value of his academic interest in the world of emotion and expression. Indeed, he has help improve the world by making people cognizant of the role emotion plays for all of us -- both negatively and positively.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books I've Read
I've read a number of self-help books with healing journeys and many step by step exercises but this one surprised me because it wasn't that sort of book yet it opened a door into seeing what I am feeling and, especially, what others are feeling. Many times since reading it, I've gained insight into what is really going on in conversations for the other person and for me. It's helped me to get along better with people, and to understand myself. Of course, this took effort on my part. It's not just read and improve. It's all about what you do with the information, what connections you see in life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Grief, anger, fear, surpise, joy and disgust
Everyone has an understanding of emotion, but few people agree on what the word really means. For example, how is'emotion' differentiated from 'feeling'?Are emotion and logic independent? This book should help you explore these questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for teachers, too!
Besides teaching math in a middle school, I also sponsor a math club.It can be tough finding useful, stimulating activities that are enticing to students, especially when the alternative is free time to socialize.I borrowed this book from a co-worker and found that it was a real hit---full of great ideas that are fun and easy to use.I liked it so much that I bought the book for myself, and a copy for still another teacher, too!At the end of the school year when parents start asking me what they can do with their child over the summer to strengthen math skills, you can bet that I'll be recommending this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the classroom too
I use this book to get the kids in my classroom hooked on liking math. Most of the time they end up asking "Is this math?" because they've always believed it was too hard or boring, but this book makes learning math fun because of its interactive activities.I would say it's a must have for teachers too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making Math Fun!!
Fantastic!Family Math puts math and problem solving skills on the kitchen table. A far cry from homework, these games and activities involve common household materials like toothpicks and dried beans. They are easy to learn, quick to play, and cover a range of mathematical abilities and topics.Definitely enjoyable for both adults and children.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars love and logic magic for early childhood
This book is a life saver! It has given us practical tools to use in every-day situations with our children. The book is organized in a clear manner.A real-life parenting challenge is presented, followed by a suggestion to solve it showing love and giving responsibility to the child... and this is with babies!"Magic" is not an exagerration. It is often said that children should come with owner's manuals. This is it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Series
This is a great book to get you started in parenting with Love and Logic. The whole concept makes sooooo much sense! Why didn't I think of it on my own? After reading this book, you will definitely want to try out these techniques and read more on the subject!

5-0 out of 5 stars A necessity for parents of younger kids
We read Parenting With Love and Logic: Teaching Children Responsibilty, but with three kids under the age of 6, I really felt like I was missing out on something that was key to dealing with little ones. This book filled in the holes. The "Uh-oh song", which isn't included in the first book, has been particularly helpful in dealing with our 3-year-old and 10-month-old.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST book on bullying
This is a must have book for anyone that deals with kids. Our schools have a problem with bullying that the district is presently denying. I hope to start a support group soon - and this will be the one book I highly recommend reading.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Incite
Excellent Book on the actual personalities of Bullies, their victims and the people who don't step in to help the victim.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bully, the bullied and the Bystander
It is a book that should be owned definitely by every parent, and also by everyone. It helps with understanding of how and why we came here, why we are who we are, and how to make it better for our kids and actually for every one around us. It describes how a family should treat our kids with respect and freedom. It is one book which I think is a must read. It gives insight into how we can change despite of bad experiences while we grew up. I would recommend it to be bought before buying a crib when you expect a baby! It is like a bible for a christan, Geeta for an Indian, Koran for a Muslim. It tells the three kinds of families, two dysfucntional and how they make long lasting deficiencies in kid's psyche. Then it explains how a backbone family gives freedom and respect to a child and makes him independent and loving. It takes a while to read as it has painful stories of kids who killed themselves because of bullying. This book should be talked about in parent teacher's organizations, at churches, temples , Sunday schools and so on. It is one book that will make a difference in our society. It describes the importance of difference between teasing and taunting and how taunting can lead to suicides, hurts not only the bullied but also instills fear in the bystanders. It weaves the relation of parental upbringing into making a kid a passive bystander as opposed to helper for the bullied. It tells signs to be seen in your child to detect if he is bullied, questions to be asked. It tells the life destroying long lasting effects on his own life if a bully is not stopped! It gives non humiliating strategies how to stop a bully and how to empower a bullied and the critical role of bystander and how to make him help the bullied. A fantastically written book. A life changing book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lowering your expectations is good for the relationship
There is an underlying theme in this book that I think is important for every couple to consider: perhaps our expectations of our partners are too high.I've been a therapist for 25 years, and the most common problem I've encountered involves unexpressed-and often unconscious-expectations that one person has about the other. Women, I believe (and I think Dr. Lerner supports this as well), have higher expections than men. Sometimes they are so high, and so many, that there is no way not to be disappointed. What would happen if we lowered our expectations? We might, as Lerner suggests, become better listeners, and take more responsibility for fulfilling our own needs, rather than demanding that our happiness be met solely at home. Of all of Lerner's books, this is one I recommend most often to my clients. We don't need a soul-mate to be happily married, and if we lower the bar just a little, a "good enough" spouse can adequately provide the decades of richness we need.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much story telling
This book was recommended for me to read by my husband's personal therapist. He's in anger counseling, after coming back from Iraq, and I'm the one reading about six books right now.

Editorial Review

Kids tend to blame themselves when parents divorce. The Sandcastles workshop--now mandatory in over a dozen counties throughout the United States--is a half-day group session for children of divorce between the ages of 6 and 17. This intensive workshop helps kids open up and deal with their feelings through drawings, games, poetry, role playing, and other activities. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great secular source of idea's and inspiration to help kids.
Dear Reader, This book is a great help for parents who have small children and want to make sure they are not lost in the divorce process. Get this book and read it all. As well it will help the parents and everyone connected to their life and affected by the divorce. Since no therapist, government body or secular agency can help from a spiritual perspective this book is the definitive secular bible for divorcing\divorced parents with kids. Divorce and the reasons for it are as old as Moses, and if you must enter that arena, at least the world's modern ways to cope with it are most all found here and for a price far less than the divorce and classes that follow. If reconciliation has even half a chance... Go For It First. With that in mind, remember or remind the reader to seek spiritual support if they have any religious affiliation. Otherwise, this book, good supportive friends\family and the best support therapy you can afford for yourself and your kids is about all there is. Good Luck to All. Amen.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are divorcing and have children, read this book!
I am a retired elementary school guidance counselor, and have often recommended this book to parents who have come to me for advise in understanding how their children experience divorce and strategies for helping them cope with it. I have also used it as I developed small group activities for my "divorce groups". It is filled with invaluable information and includes many easy but effective activities for parents to do with their child to maintain communication during this difficult time. One of the most valuable features is information about how children adjust to the separation of their parents at different developmental levels. Sadly, I recently dug out my copy of the book and then ordered two copies, one for my son and one for my daughter-in-law, to use in helping my granddaughter cope with the end of their marriage. I wish everyone who is divorcing and has children would read this book and follow the advise contained therein. We'd have lots more kids surviving the break-up of their parents with their emotional health intact.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicely balanced book
As a mental health professional I am always a little skeptical about this kind of book - when people write based on their experience they sometimes forgo the need to check whether their experience is consistent with that of other people in other places by reviewing the research literature before writing their books. I was pleasantly surprised to find this book full of evidence based suggestions and information for separating/separated parents. It is an easy read, with information clearlypresented so non-professionals will find it very helpful; and for those who have a scientific background and who are familiar with the psychological research in this field it will be clear that the book is based upon solid information. A very useful resource. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Recognizing each child's intellectual, emotional, and physical strengths--and teaching directly to these strengths--is key to sculpting "a mind at a time," according to Dr. Mel Levine. While this flashing yellow light will not surprise many skilled educators, limited resources often prevent them from shifting their instructional gears. But to teachers and parents whose children face daily humiliation at school, the author bellows, "Try harder!" A professor of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina Medical School, Levine eloquently substantiates his claim that developmental growth deserves the same monitoring as a child's physical growth. 4-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Dr. Levine
I loved this book because I believe that every child is unique and I appreciate being reminded about the complexity of the brain and why it should be expected that we all have little quirks. Educators can sadly have blinders to differences in learning style. Mel Levine's work reminds me of Howard Gardner's in many ways. I sense that he truly cares about kids and I like that he supports what is best practice in education. Levine says he can learn more about a child by getting to know that child than by reading a list of test scores........let's hear it for that! Levine says, "sometimes you fix a weakness by pursuing strengths." I support that positive approach. To enhance my teaching I found many great quotes perfect for Back to School night and parents who have borrowed his book have enjoyed it immensely.

5-0 out of 5 stars An eye-opener and food for thought
I first picked up this book because I believe that every child is an individual and has individual needs. When I started reading the book I finally found someone else who believes that too. Levine carefully looks at each "learning disability" and breaks it down into various components. Upon reading, I began to see many of my own RSP students more clearly. Susie doesn't just have ADD,she has problems with auditory distrators. For those naysayers, perhaps Levine is ahead of his time, perhaps he has seen somethings others haven't yet (remember, there was a time when folks that blood-letting was appropriate). For me and several of my professional friends, this book is an inspiration to look more deeply at each student and it gives us the tools to do so.It is heavy reading, I will admit. I actually took the content and created a graphic reading guide to go with it for my staff because you can get lost in it if you are not a careful reader. This is not casual bedtime reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mel Levine is an idiot
I found this book to be insulting to children and to educators. This man obviously has no idea what he is talking about, his ideas are strictly from the deficiency model of student underachievement which has been shown to be a faulty method of explanantion.Any educator who reads this book and takes it seriously should be relieved of their jobs ASAP.

Editorial Review

At adolescence, says Mary Pipher, "girls become 'female impersonators' who fit their whole selves into small, crowded spaces." Many lose spark, interest, and even IQ points as a "girl-poisoning" society forces a choice between being shunned for staying true to oneself and struggling to stay within a narrow definition of female. Pipher's alarming tales of a generation swamped by pain may be partly informed by her role as a therapist who sees troubled children and teens, but her sketch of a tougher, more menacing world for girls often hits the mark. She offers some prescriptions for changing society and helping girls resist. ... Read more

this book gives a great overview of what our children are facing. it was written in the 1990's and refers to that date, however i believe that the truths it holds are even more true today. i found it full of great information that explained alot of things. however, if you are looking for what to do to save them, this book does not really spend too much time on focusing on that though it does go over a couple suggestions briefly. i would highly recommend this book to anyone with children be they teens or not, be they girls or boys the information is invaluable. good luck to all of you out there. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Helped me understand our daughter!
I was looking for a short, easy to read overview about 4 year olds. I felt like I had a pretty good grasp on 1-3, but when our daughter hit 4, all control and understanding was lost! Ames' book really put the age in perspective -- she does a great job describing what's normal for 4. As a result, myhusband and I felt a bit less isolated, more secure, and confident as parents.

3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely helpful, definitely dated
My own four-year-old is now five.I read this book around the time he turned 4 so it's been a little while, but after reading the prior review I had to comment.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Oldie But Goodie!
I am a stay at home mom of three older children and a four year old boy and I loved this book.I had a lot of worries about my lovable and intelligent son and this book was just a sigh of relief.Almost everything I read in this book described my son perfectly. He has a lot of positive qualites, but also his share of negative qualities (all of which were covered in this book) and it was refreshing to read that he is normal and will grow out of most of these things by the time he is five.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another living proof!
My twin babies were born 8lbs and 8lbs4oz at 38 weeks 3 days, and are as healthy as can be.Being someone who likes to know all the possible risks and be mentally prepared for them, this book gave me that.At the same time I actually found the book very comforting with milestones to look forward to (for example the head circumference diagram and footprint comparison of each month the babies stay inside the womb).I also followed Dr Luke's weight gain recommendation and packed on necessary pounds which I believe helped contributed to the high birth weight of the babies.I definitely recommend this book to pregnant moms of multiples!I have read other books on multiple pregnancies that were downright depressing and uncaring, and other light readings like "Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy", which was fun to read but not at all helpful for a high risk multiples pregnancy. Thanks Dr Luke and Tamara!!!I am so grateful for your book.

5-0 out of 5 stars TWINS GALORE - the proof is in the pudding!
7 lbs 5 oz and 6 lbs 11 oz - huge, healthy, and full-term!! Think about it - how many parents of twins can actually (truthfully) say that?? I'm living the reality of my dreams and hopes and I owe it SOLELY to THIS BOOK. And let me also reassure you that the outcome of my twin pregnancy was NOT just a fluke - I worked very hard toward it, by reading, understanding and fully implementing the entire protocol that Dr. Luke recommends. Now that I glow as a proud mom of beautifull, completely healthy, remarkable twins, I owe it to the world to share my secret - if you are expecting twins or more, PLEASE read and follow this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have book if you are prego with multiples
I purchased this book when I first found out I was prego with triplets. I was quite distressed because my regular OB wanted me to reduce down to twins as he was sure I wouldn't be able to carry triplets to term (for trips)and healthy.I am also a petite woman (5ft)and he said "there isn't enough room in your uterus".I read this book in two days and was so encouraged by all the things expectant moms can do to increase their chances. So far, so good. This is the Bible for HOM moms.I have since spoken to other triplet moms and they too LOVE this book. I have referred to this book several times during the course of my pregancy and keep it by my bedside. This is a must have!!! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not for me
I was hoping for something with easy recipes that the whole family could enjoy together, but this is not it. A lot of the recipes are really unsuited for babies, and they instead give "baby" versions at the end that consist of reserving one of the ingredients (e.g., brown rice) and pureeing it plain--not exactly nutritious. (These are often followed by "children's" versions that necessitate picking out selected ingredients that may--or may not--appeal to kids.) There are too many grain-based recipes for my taste (deep-fried millet croquettes...red bean quinoa chili) and a lot of nuts (bad for babies), sea vegetables and permutations of soy (tofu, tempeh, tamari) which I personally am not interested in serving due to all the recent scrutiny of soy products as hormone disruptors (also a possible allergen for babies). It is really sort of an Asian-inspired/macrobiotic vegetarian cookbook (Tempeh Bacon is one of the recipes). "Whole Foods," in my mind, should feature fresh, minimally processed, natural, localized ingredients, but this seems to require endless trips to the health food store to purchase products such as seitan and kudzu. There is a lot of great nutritional information at the beginning of the book discussing babies and breastfeeding mothers, and some seemingly good sugar-free desserts, but I am sort of disappointed that the majority of the recipes are not palatable for the whole family (or easily modifed so that older babies can enjoy what everyone else gets).

5-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive
"Feeding the Whole Family" by Cynthia Lair really is for the WHOLE family - and that includes infants and young children. Lair, a certified Health and Nutrition Counselor, devotes a whole chapter on starting your baby on solid foods. From there, she gives practical tips and advice on how to attract your children to healthy food. Lair also discusses the importance of whole, organic foods and well-balanced meals.
5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy for Your Lactobacilli
In the foreword by Annemarie Colbin, CHES, of The Natural Gourmet Cookery School in NYC, there is the suggestion that shifts in customs around eating have contributed to the breakdown of our society, "could it be that by our dietary customs- consumption of unnatural foods and large amounts of meat and milk from animals raised on antibiotics and hormones-we are building a new kind of human being, one that has little connection with the healthier ways of the past?"I'd have to say... No.I don't see that as being a simple cause and effect, but I'm with her in spirit.I'd see both our diets and our lifestyles as being downstream effects of animals living in a very different kind of environment than the one we spent the overwhelming majority of our species-span evolving in.It doesn't matter whether she overstates the case or not, the bottom-line is still correct, we are Paleolithic hominids with Paleolithic-tuned bodies stranded without our tribes, alone in our urban institutions.By finding ways to recreate customs that resonate with a deeper part of our evolutionary past, we stand to not only enrich our lives but also improve our physical and mental health.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is adorable
This book has really cute illustrations. I really loved this book I just finished it. It is really bright and colorful. There is so much room to put stuff. The only thing it lacks is a month by month of the first year. I love that it has places for both mom and dad to write letters to the baby and pockets to put things. It would be perfect except that the only month by month breakdown of the first year is only two pages and it provides just enough space to write height, weight and one sentence about each month.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST!!!!
I love this book!!! I received several baby books for my first child none of which I was crazy about but I decided to go with Baby Love by Susan Branch, while it is cute and I like some of the things she suggests to include, it is designed more like a regular book with thin paper pages which makes it difficult to add things (even pictures) and to enter info into it because of the way it is organized.I received this book today for the child I am expecting in few months and I plan on purchasing another for my first child because it is so much better than Baby Love.It has a adorable frames for pictures and plenty of places to put them, a lot of storage pockets, sturdy pages, and plenty (but not too much) room to write stuff.I felt pressured to fill out the info requested in Baby Love, but I am excited to fill out the pages in this one.Best one I have seen so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect size and cuteness...
I bought this book for my second child, after searching and searching for just the right one. It's very colorful and decorated so fun -- great for either a boy or a girl (I'm using it for a boy).It has tons of topics to write about - all the big events, and even those that aren't so big. There is ample room to include a variety of photos, as well as other keepsakes and momentos. In addition, there are blank pages throughout for you to write a letter/message to your little one at different stages of their infancy.I like the fact that it covers 3 years, too.Now that my older child is over 3, I realize that was a good stopping point for all the "newness". ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good, Fun Book for Beginnner Dads
This book is a great starting place if you are like me and are a first time Dad with absolutely zero experience dealing with babies. It presents really useful information and tidbits in an entertaining format for guys. The illustrations are quite amusing as well. Who knew that Bob Marley's 'Buffalo Solider' has a perfectly soothing rhythym that matches the baby's heartbeat and helps them relax? It is also contains tidbits on how to leverage your bundle of joy psychologically on others - catching relief at work etc. Things that guys need to know that they would never learn from your typical baby books. I particularly like the bit on how to powernap to minimize fatigue.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and informative
