5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Parents of Teens & Pre-teens
Great hands-on advice for learning how to love your pre-teen and teenager.I wish now that I had this book when my first daughter was a teen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Christian resource on parenting teens
The Five Love Languages for Teenagers by Gary Chapman is a book every parent needs to own.I'll admit, I went looking for a quick fix with this book. The other Love Languages books have a quiz in the back to help you identify your language, and that's right where I went with this book: to the back.I was disappointed to find no quiz in this book, but Chapman explains that teenagers would be quick to figure out how to manipulate the system if they knew that we were trying to figure them out.The book discusses the five love languages as broken down in Chapman's other books in this series, but directs them specifically at how teenagers are affected by them.I learned so much from this book about how to talk to my kids and that both of my teens are quality time people.During the course of reading this book, I've seen a change in my daughter already. She's spent more time talking to me, because I've spent more time listening to her. This is a book I will purchase for my own bookshelf and continue the practices in it for the next 17 years (until my three-year-old turns 20).

5-0 out of 5 stars "Must reading for any parent or teacher of teenagers"

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
If you ever wondered why you do what you do this is for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars An understandable and useful book
This book is approachable for nearly every reader. It puts complex concepts in terms that make sense without having to read over and over. This is a great starting point for anyone who is tryingto understand famliy function and disfunction.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too many chiefs...
I've listened to the audio version of this book and I found it to be insightful and enlightening.I've also read the other reviews about this book and-well it is obvious that is just isn't for every one.Speaking to anyonymous about recovered memories, I have to say that I disagree completely.I am a victim of childhood abuse (not incest.I dissociated those memories and from time to time I acted them out(described as re-enactment by those who have studied PTSD).No Psychologist has told me this and in fact I went to prison because I refused to go to mental health after being court ordered to do so, specifically because I did not want them manipulating me or my thoughts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great first effort
This is the first book I have read about anger.I grew up with an angry mother and a rageful father so this is an issue that needs attention in my life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, thought provoking
You'll be suprised by this thought provoking depiction of anger and how your life has been effected by your anger and the anger of the people in your life.I didn't think that my emotional wellness was so effected by anger. There is more to anger then active aggression, loud outburst, or fighting.Everyone experiences anger. You'll relate to the case studies more than you would like to think.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Anger out There
I've dealt with anger issues for years and have heard plenty of advice and couselling, but this is by far the most practical guide I've encountered.Les's writing style makes his concepts easy to understand, even though the concepts themselves are not simplistic.Les has distilled his 30 years of counseling experience into very useable advice on how to overcome the negative consequences of mishandled anger. While many other authors and counselors major primarily on the causes of anger, they mostly grow frustratingly silent on how to change the negative behavior that stems from anger. While Les doesn't offer a promise that you'll never be angry again if you apply his suggestions, his insights are very helpful in minimizing the harm to others and yourself when that inevitable angry moment comes.

1-0 out of 5 stars For Anyone Interested...
Google the words Foster Cline and Attachment Therapy, and be prepared to lose your lunch. Happy research!

5-0 out of 5 stars Who is this child and what happened to my 5 year-old?
This book is very reassuring to the parents of a child who turns six and becomes someone very different from the sweet, compliant five-year-old of yesterday. Our boy's behavior was "textbook" so many times that our mantra has become "It's in the book".Even though he is still a delight 99% of the time, we will all be glad when he gets through this period of disequilibrium and is a little more loving and less defiant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Memorable take-home messages
This book helped me put a lot of parenting into perspective. I found that the take-home messages of the book are easy to remember. The key one for me was, "Who owns the problem?"What a concept. The premise is that rescuing my kids from the consequences of their actions is a lousy way to teach kids responsibility. The section on grounding of kids was great too. This book is making me question practically every aspect of my knee-jerk parenting responses.Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the help for my toddler
She really breaks it down and helps me understand my son's sleep patterns, what he needs me to do and what I may want to consider changing in our routine.I've made a few changes as she suggested and so far so good!

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked for us!
I highly recommend this book for anyone! It was our saving grace!
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must for any parents with toddlers
I read countless books on sleeping out of desperation.I've met a few parents who think they have all the answers to the sleep problem and they have only one child who happened to be 'not normal' and sleep well.I wish I had read this book much earlier.I tried cry-out methods (and there're many variations) and they only work temporarily.Everytime we sleep over at our in-laws, one of them get sick, or something changed, we had to go through the horrible cry-out methods over and over again.I've been thinking I am not persistent and can't control my own kids (I have two boys 4 & 2 1/2).While reading this book, I assessed my kids' sleep habits and was relieved they're normal and getting enough sleep.I just needed to adjust a few little things and even before I finished the book, everyone (including myself!) started sleeping better at night.Night routines are much more pleasant.Of course, there are nights they wake up and come to get me, but armed with helpful information, I can deal with it much more effectively and everyone quickly goes back to sleep.I feel much happier since I am getting better sleep at nights. We're expecting our third and I am going to read her book on babies. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on gifted education
This book is an invaluable resource to both parents and teachers

5-0 out of 5 stars Among the best books on early education
I have a baby and recently started planning her early education.I systematically searched the internet, Amazon and university library shelves for information.Among the dozens of books that I have read or browsed, this one is clearly among the best (a must-have) for my style of parenting.I don't just listen to "experts" and do what they say, I do my own reasoning and make my own decision.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for Grandparents!!!
When my daughter got her Baby Signs Kit--I thought just another FAD.Then while the Grandkids were watching the DVD our 3 y.o. Granddaughter started to do some of the signs and trying to show our 1 y.o. Grandson how to do them.I was absolutely amazed and then I ralized how easy this could be.I looked at the rest of the kit and found there is a Parent Workshop and I'm signing me &Grandma up because we have an opportunity to do something really fun and educational with our grandchildren.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love It!!!!!
I bought this product to send to my daycare to provide them with materials to help in signing to my son (who has over 65 signs). They loved it!!!The flip chart is on the fridge for easy access and they read the board books to the kids during circle time. The director of the daycare loved it so much that she is looking into the ECE curriculum for the entire school!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Visible results right out of the box!
I just recieved my kit and couldn't wait to check it all out! There were so many useful tools. My favorite had to be the parents DVD. I loved how they had a dictionary that could easily be accessed for a quick reminder! Having someone demonstrate the signs is also a big help. I tend to be more of a visual learner. I put the DVD in for my son and he loved it. Sat there watching attentivly and even attempting sign! Visible results right out of the box! The books are perfect sized for little ones to be hands on. And the quick reference guide willl help out family members and babysitters a great deal! I have looked into other programs however this kit sold me 100 % without a doubt! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for all special needs situations, but helpful
The methods in this book detail considerable sacrifice of parents time and resources devoted to one child; in a multiple child or two-working parent household, this would not be as beneficial and produce results as claimed from Floor Time program. Also, there are many types of special needs children with needs not addressed in this book. While overall helpful and a must-read for involved parents, continue seeking assistance from local programs and teachers/therapists, and use this as one small part of your reading list. This book does not address all the needs of all special needs children, but it is helpful and gives detailed explanations and plans to begin with.We have four special needs children with four separate diagnoses, so we are not first time parents, nor is this book the definitive program or resource for any of the four.Read it, try it, then continue researching and resourcing!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must-Read for Parents with Autistic Children
Our 20-month old son was diagnosed by two separate agencies (one was South Carolina's Department of Disabilities and Special Needs) in August of 2005. We had fought for some sort of diagnosis since he was about one year old, due to SO many issues we saw that were not present with our first children.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
It's hard to really review a book on Floortime because you're not discussing the book so much as the techniques behind it. As a speech therapist, I got into this method because it mirrored my basic instinctive approach to and ideas about therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doing your Homo-work as a parent and Gay Parent
The writing of Harville Hendrix's have become my relationship bibles. I find his clear way of taking psychological theory and putting into practice for relationships of all kind very effective.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not Your Average Parenting Book
I was somewhat disappointed, having read Hendrix's other books. This book is set up very much like Simple Abundance, and each day has its "words to live by".For example, there is no path to follow if you know your child is suffering from the psycholigical disorder that is commonly known as adolescence. Not bad, but not chock full of valuable exercises like his previous works.5-0 out of 5 stars Best Parenting Book Ever
I recommend this book to every parent who mentions struggling with their child(ren). It goes beyond being just a parenting-technique book to helping the parent identify their own issues stemming from childhood.Through that process, the parent learns where his/her weaknesses or blocks are, so that they have the clarity to discern what is actually occurring with the child, rather than being clouded by his/her perceptions. From there, the parent can use the techniques taught in the book to help the child move successfully through the developmental phase that is causing frustration.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars new moms: read this now!
This book will help new moms (and dads, too) see that it's entirely normal to have periods when the baby makes you crazy, times when you think you just aren't going to figure it all out, and also moments of total bliss. It's all part of the new mom experience, and Anne Lamott can help you see that you truly are not alone. I read this while pregnant and then again after my daughter was born. It's just fantastic: moving, sad, funny, the works.

2-0 out of 5 stars A baby is a little miracle. Now shut up.
Reading this book felt like being stuck next to a new parent on a long plane trip.Either you're bored because you don't have kids, or you're bored because it is never your turn to talk about YOUR kid, or you are so kid-oriented and passive that you simply LOVE to hear all about the mundane ordinary pleasures that someone else gets from THEIR kid.If you are in the latter category, or you are perhaps a single mom in recovery and born again in Christ, you will enjoy this book.Otherwise, skip it and go spend some time with your real-life friends who have kids. They need the company, and the baby stories are all pretty much the same.Lamott's diary style offers 'reality' but little art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my sanity
When I was a new mom this book saved my sanity. I realized that maternal feelings weren't all cotton candy happy. They ran the gamut. Anne let me laugh at myself even when I was angry, frustrated and confused. I learned that motherhood is real. The book is far cheaper than therapy and a must for new mothers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read For Parents
This is a good book for parents not just those with toddlers and preschoolers. It gives insight into the montessori method and really shows you the interelationship between how a child deveopls intellectually and physically. I wish that I had gotten it earlier because it has good insights into toddlerhood - tantrums and all. My son is 21/2 and we are hoping to send him to pre-school in September, so we wanted to get a guideline so to speak about what we should be looking for and the best kind of learning at his age. Also we were looking for new ways to engage him, so I'm anxious to try out the activities. He's in the 'I want to be independent stage' and after reading the book I have adopted some of its advice on how to help him acheive this. All in all I would say its a good buy, quite informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Montessori resource for the home
I was looking for a good way to teach my preschool son at home using some elements of the Montessori method. However, I wanted to go at my own pace and in a relaxed way.If you need a more regimented and structured Montessori method at home read Elizabeth Hainstock's books.Leslie Britton's book is well-written, concise and hits all the main points.I really like the games and activities designed for children from two to six.I am able to pick and choose and with home materials to teach my son at home.My son is two so he's only able to participate in a few exercises. Can't recommend it enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool for parents of pre-school age kids
Montessori school can be unbelieveably expensive (approx. 500 dollars per 8 week sessions, and that's just half days!), and your child has to be "approved" in most institutions. Based on the teaching of Maria Montessori, it is designed to help toddlers and young children learn in five simple steps: observation, participation, practice, "eureka" movement, and performance. This learning process can help youngsters be well ahead of the game by the time they go into Kindergarten. While a Montessori school can help give your kids interaction withkids of all ages, you can still apply this method of learning in the home, as Montessori pointed out: "Parents are still the child's first and most important teachers".Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How could anyone NOT get a kick out of this book???
Anyone who is offended by this book must not have a sense of humor at all. This is truly funny stuff with a whole lot of truth behind it.I am buying copies for my friends who are moms!I agree with the author that parents today need to stop letting their kids run the house and stop allowing them tobelieve that they are the center of the universe. It's time for parents to take back their homes! We'll be doing our kids and ourselves a big favor if we do.In the long run, happier parents = happier kids.We are supposed to be their PARENTS not their servants or best friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars "This is MY house and I INVITED you to come and live here!"
First and foremost, I'm ticked that I didn't write this book. Secondly, I am so glad that Christie Mellor wasn't afraid to take a step forward and share her reality with those of us who thought we were going crazy and doing this "Mommy Thing" all wrong. For years I have been surrounded by an army of Mom's who look to too many books for answers that, in most cases, they already have. It was a comfort and a relief to read the words of, at least, one person who shares the same views about "Mommyhood" as I do. After reading the reviews for this book, I see that there are more of US out there. It appears that we are in the minority. Where were the rest of you when I was going through the toddler/nursery school years? I have made it standard practice to have at least two of TT-MP on hand. When I am in the presence of a Mom who is in the mid-stages of questioning her Mommy skills and looking like she may be two days away from a visit to the funny farm, I send a little positive pick me up along home with her. I also give it to Mom's who are stressing out while planning Little Susie's "Mini- Birthday Catillion".It's a great Mother's Day and Teacher gift as well. For years other Mom's have commented on my humorous, quick witted statements and commentary when talking to, or AT, my boy's. Most think I'm just kidding when I say things such as "This is MY house and I INVITED you to come live here" or "This is NOT an ALL DAY DINER,the kitchen is CLOSED." Truth is, I'm not kidding. WE were here first. Through reading this book, I am finally comfortable in my own skin. What a GREAT BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars I was going to write this book, but it's already done. And perfectly!
Ok, a girl needs to admit when she's been outdone. In researching my 2nd book - the one that I intended to be insanely funny while helping moms to get a grip and stop obsessing about their precious little angels -- I found that the world didn't need my take on mommy madness. The Three-Martini Playdate was already out there for all to see.Christie Mellor has guts. Her wicked words slice away at all the perfect mothers in the world and let us laugh at how hard we all seem to be trying these days.I'm not sure if she has any friends left in her neighborhood, but who cares? She wrote one funny book. And I'm back to square one... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a lifesaver.
I have purchased 15 copies of this book. One for every mother of young children that I know.It has completely changed the way I parent and the way my daughter respondes to me.It has reduced the tension in our home and I feel the need to reccomend it to everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless, Thought-Provoking, Effective
After two months of working on our kids we've concluded that this book works. Our 4 and 2 1/2 year old children had been easygoing and sweet toddlers who one day just became unmanageable and we couldn't understand why. My husband and I found ourselves constantly disciplining them and losing our tempers. Our "tactics" were failing, and we felt guilty at how angry and resentful we were becoming toward our children.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful roadmap to parenting
As a new parent, who really didn't know what to do to raise a child, this book has given me some great principles that are humane and sensible to follow.I love that it is centered on respect for the child, and giving him or her the right to make their own decisions.I like that it gives me rights too.I have been reading and re-reading this book regularly since my son was 18 months old, and now that he is three years old, he is independent and helpful. He's also a little terror at times, but this book helps me deal with agression, tantrums, defiance. It helps keep me calm, and even when offering him tough choices (Do you want to stop throwing sand or do you want me to carry you home?) I do it in a friendly way, where I am really interested in the answer. It's truly up to him, and I feel happy that the choice is his to make, and I can live with either. He may scream and shout, but he clearly feels the fairness in it, because he gets over it so quickly. In contrast, where I do lose my temper occasionally, and am then unfairly dictatorial in my attitude, he doesn't get over it so quickly. But he seems to respond to the respect inherent in the guidelines in this book.If you are not sure how to be a parent, this is a great foundation book, and I recommend it beyond words. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the "alternative' mom
If you are into herbs and natural health and pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant this is a must read! Full of wonderful information and very well written. Was my favorite book during pregnancy and beyond.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book about herbal childbearing
I really found this book useful. I've had it for many years and was looking for an herbal book for childbearing when I got it. I have several herb books but like the fact that this one zeros in on one subject. I wasn't really interested in the part about aborting babies, though. All in all, the book is very readable and interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any woman who is expecting.
I just ordered two copies of this wonderful book for my office.I have a small healing center and women who come to me are into a more holistic and natural way to experience pregnancy and childbirth. This book is a wonderful friend to keep handy throughout your pregnancy and birthing experience.Ms. Weed lists a number of herbal preparations to use for the varying issues that come up during the 'waiting' period and the birthing also.Try it.... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A great resource
I remember that my grandma bought this book to give to my mom, so that she could share it with me.I developed pretty early, so my mom had already talked to me about my period before I read this book.I remember that she allowed me to read it myself and let me ask questions (I had lots).I also remember looking at the book with my cousin and laughing at the pictures of the developing male and female bodies. All in all, it's a great book that I'm glad is still in publication.I'd caution parents to give it to their children earlier than the age the book recommends. Both boys and girls are reaching puberty earlier these days and need to know about all of this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful in 1975, and still is
My parents read both this book and "Where did I come from?" to me when they were first published in the mid-seventies (I was born in 1970).I don't remember feeling awkward or embarrassed about the books.I was at an age where everything was pre-sexual.I had no social hang-ups about my body parts.I remember very clearly starting elementary school about this time and I was able to understand what all the innuendos were about. Yes, sexual innuendos by many other children that couldn't have been older than nine.I remember other kids laughing at the girl who really believed that children came from the cabbage patch!I remember one of my friends crying and running to her mother when she caught our friend Kenny using the toilet while standing up.She though he had a horrible tumor.
4-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book...
I think I'll make it a tradition in my family! My mom gave me this book when I was growing up, and I swear I read it cover to cover each day!! I loved the illustrations; I thought they eased the transition from Uncomfy-with-the-whole-puberty-thing to Yay!-I'm a Woman!! :P I'd recommend it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Lucy Jo Palladino defines the Edison Trait (named after Thomas Edison) as divergent vs. convergent thinking. Edison Trait kids--one in five children--have the qualities that make innovative leaders, inventors, explorers, yet they often have a hard time in school where their personality traits may be seen as weak or negative. Palladino recasts these children in a positive light and gives specifics on understanding and becoming an ally for your Edison Trait child. The book is convincing, reassuring, and accessible. Perhaps it will help parents of nonconforming kids resist the pressure to make their kids "just fit in." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love rewires the brain
Pharmaceutical drugs are only one line of defense in treating ADD. Drugs can alter brain chemistry but the patient is fundamentally the same personality. Medication alone will only go so far. A combination of prescriptions and psychotherapy yield better long-term results. Thomas Edison owed his life to his mother who believed in him when the schools kicked him out at 6. There is something to be said about love ... love itself can rewire the brain of a "problem" child.
