5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I was loaned this book when I was pregnant with our first child and since then have bought it for every person I knew who was pregnant. Other pregnancy books sugarcoat this like "your might feel a little discomfort this month" where Armin Brott's book said: your wife will feel terrible this month. I liked that approach much more than the happy bunnies pregnancy-is-wonderful side. I would reccomend this book to everyone who is pregnant, moms and dads

5-0 out of 5 stars To become a Father
This book was wonderful. My wife and I both read this book. It has great humor to it and covers a lot of issues that a female's pregnancy book doesn't. Money, sex, the raging hormones and changes to her body from a mans point of view.I ABSOLUTELY recommend this book, to both mothers and fathers to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
My wife and I wanted to know as much as we can about having a baby. This is one of the books that stand out in its category and I bought it. I am very pleased with it! Mr. Brott describes what it takes to be a dream father-to-be. I was deeply impressed and I will do my very best to come as close to the described role model as possible because as my wife said: "What more a pregnant woman may ask for?" I am very happy that in addition to information about the baby are discussed so many and it was hard to believe that they are so many little but important things that I and only I must take of. I even had to face the frustration from 9 sexless months but that won't happen because I learnt from another bestseller scientifically guaranteed male multiple orgasms and ultimate sex how to enjoy multi-orgasmswith or without her. Now I can confidently say that the key to success as a father-to-be is to be prepared as much as possible. This book is one of the must have because it covers many areas and provides excellent and detailed advice. I am sure that it will help you to be a dream father-to-be as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Showing Our True Colors
Mary Miscisin's book was outstanding! It was a fun and easy read, yet full of informative and interesting ideas about people and how and why they act the way they do.Having been an educator for many years, this is THE book I could have used long ago to better interact with my students and their parents. The book's content makes easy what Myers-Briggs tries to do.I would recommend it to anyone who has a desire to deal more effectively with children or adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Color Me Satisfied
Easy to read, full of wisdom.I never could figure out how to use Myers-Briggs.I can use this everyday with everyone I meet.Useful for all ages, both sexes.Entertaining presentation helps emphasize a language of Colors that is non-threatening, non-emotional, and constructively wonderful

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-long Learning!
As an educator with 30 years experience in the classroom and in coaching, I wish I could have read Mary Miscisin's book 30 years ago!I would have been a much better teacher and coach because I would have had a much better understanding of my students and athletes and how to more effectively communicate with them based on their colors.I couldn't put the book down because I kept meeting past students as well as people I know now represented in Miscisin's creative and stimulating examples."Showing Our True Colors" was so challenging and packed with information, yet so simple to understand and implement.Every parent, teacher, and coach ought to read the book.It is a must for couples and anyone who wants to communicate more effectively.Where was this book when I needed it?Oh, yeah, I still do need it today. Thanks Mary! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Parenting from Inside the Parent Brain
While other authors have focused their attention on the brain of the developing child (What's Going on in There by Lise Eliot, Ph.D. and The Scientist in the Crib by Alison Gopnik, PhD, Andrew N. Meltzoff, Ph.D., and Patricia K. Kuhl, Ph.D.), in their book Parenting from the Inside Out: How a Deeper Self-Understanding Can Help you Raise Children Who Thrive, Siegel and Hartzell zero in on what's going on inside the parent's brain -- specifically how new research in the areas of neurobiology and attachment theory can help parents to understand why they parent the way they do and what they can do to use that knowledge to become better parents.
4-0 out of 5 stars Will make you a better parent if you're willing to work for it.
This book is full of lots of fascinating information but it's the exercises and the thinking that goes into doing them that makes this book the eye-opener it is.Don't cheat yourself out of the full experience by skipping the exercises or setting them aside to "get to later."You and your kids will both benefit from the soul-searching Siegel and Hartzell invite at the end of each chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on parenting I have ever read.
This is an excellent book for parents and foster or adoptive parents and therapists. It is a book to be read slowly and experienced. It is about emotional and brain development in people and the lifetime effects of our connections with those around us. It is also a book about healing. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Overly generalized
When I bought this book, I was expecting helpful solutions, but all I got were general facts that most parents of autistic children already know. The book definitely needed more specific information on how to handle problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging Autism:Helping Children Relate, Communicate & Think with the DIR Floortime Approach
This book is a must read for parents with an autistic child. This book is easy to read and understand. Dr. Greenspan has made me feel I will be able to help my son fully recover. This is the 1st time in 3 years I have hope!My son is moderate to severly autistic. We have been doing Floortime & have seen much success. What a natural way of helping him & having fun doing it.Thank you Dr. Greenspan.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Engaging and Too Little Information
I have been a Learning Specialist for nearly twenty years at the high school and community college levels. When I read "Engaging Autism" by Stanley I. Greenspan, I was anticipating a book filled with fresh information, scientific validity, and ideas that could be realistically applied in a variety of classroom settings.Instead, I read page after page of disappointment.DIR/Floortime is an interesting/innovative approach for helping individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental disabilities. However, this book was extremely weak in the following areas:repetition of the same ideas/concepts throughout the work, reliance on anecdotal information, no scientific validation of information, absence of an in-depth bibliography, frequent reference to products written by Greenspan and his team, and lack of organization throughout the text.DIR/Floortime is presented as too simplistic when in actuality it appears to be extremely time consuming and labor instensive which is impractical in contemporary public education settings. The author recommends homeschooling and intense family involvement as though this was a simple solution. However, parents uusually do not have the extensive time or expertise to devote to the DIR/Floortime approach. If you are interested in learning what DIR/Floortime entails, I recommend researching Internet sources or consulting works by other authors. This book is largely a waste of time for professionals in the field of special education.Unless you want to read a rehash of ideas over and over again, I would not waste my time with this book.I was going to order another book by Dr. Greenspan entitled "The Child With Special Needs:Encouraging Intellectual and Emotional Growth" but will not be doing it at this time.

3-0 out of 5 stars For more "advanced" moms
I think this would be a great book, but I feel it spoke more to moms who are done having kids and have older kids. This is just my take on it. I have one child and one on the way, so it didn't appeal to me as much as I thought it would. I mean, although I'm not done having kids, I still want to "get my groove back"! :-)

2-0 out of 5 stars Awful book- her husband should be mortified
....since she makes him look like the worst man alive. Anecdotes about how she has to beg him to do his part as a father and how he negatively reacts to her pregnancies really set my teeth on edge. Am I the only woman alive whose husband truly cherishes his role as a father? Even worse, I put 2 and 2 together and realized the man in question is none other then THE Jimmy Iovine, famous producer. Is THAT how she was able to get this drivel published? I agree with the previous reviewer who noted the overabundance of run on sentences as well. Don't waste your money on this book:The Iovines have plenty as it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vicki is at it again.
I have read all of her books. Her humorous writing has helped to save my sanity during the mommy years. Her brutal honesty about raising children is much appreciated in a society that fails to acknowledge the true challenge that parenting is. ... Read more

There is little sugar but lots of spice in journalist Rachel Simmons's brave and brilliant book that skewers the stereotype of girls as the kinder, gentler gender.

5-0 out of 5 stars Girls Need To Make Peace With Conflict
I found this book, "Odd Girl Out," not only helpful but also cathartic. It answered a lot of current questions I have about raising an adolescent daughter by enabling me to go back and visit my own youth and remind me of my own experiences. This book illustrates how easy it is for mothers raising daughters to live vicariously through them and see how it brings out old fears and insecurities. It was a re-education.
4-0 out of 5 stars Part of the Puzzle, Read It, but Don't Stop Here
You know, this is actually a topic that is near and dear for my heart and it did have a lot of interesting examples and data...but like Fast Girls before it, this reads a lot like someone's research paper and doesn't really delve too far into the history of aggression (in boys or girls) beyond a barest basics that most people probably already know.Simmons also doesn't offer any statistics, she mentions repeatedly that there really isn't any research on this, but I felt like this was just a big book length article that focused on her own personal fascination with the topic and the scope of the book really doesn't go much beyond her own group of interviewees.I was also kind of annoyed by the great deal of repeated information, it's as if in the absence of statistical data to support her theory she just keeps saying the same thing over and over.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dads and Educators ALSO Need to READ This Book!!!
The book opened my eyes into a girls' world I'd never realized existed. A father, I got the book to understand the social dynamics my daughter navigates. It's like a gardner suddenly discovering that flowers have aromas, weeds have deep roots, and roses have thorns.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Help for Parents and Therapists
Very helpful for therapists and parents who want to use the Collaborative Problem Approach with explosive kids.Using plenty of examples and scripts, Drs. Green and Ablon help to walk people through the approach, through common pitfalls, and provide guidance and support for therapists working with families.A must-read for every family therapist and teacher who has ever worked with an explosive child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creating a better world
I am reading "Treating the Explosive Child" and simply cannot put this book down - if everyone incorporated this approach into everyday life, what a humane world it could be.Thank you, Dr Ablon and Green for the expertise you are sharing and disseminating to the world - in my eyes, you are true heroes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally an answer
Ever since my child was about 4 I have been wondering what he "had"....what his behavioral issues were all about.Three therapists later, psychological testing, and countless offerings of advice from friends, parents and teachers I have finally found an explanation that rings true and speaks to my husband and me. My son is now 14.How I wish I had known about this "CPS approach" years ago. The approach is not "Magic 123" (and therefore simplistic) but if it's followed, it works.I first read Dr. Greene's other book aimed at parents called "The Explosive Child" which is also wonderful."Treating Explosive Kids" is directed at therapists and is therefore more dense and a little more difficult to understand for the lay person but the book is filled with dialogue between professionals, parents, and kids which brilliantly and realistically illustrates how to treat a child who is inflexible, explosive, and therefore incredibly frustrating.Guess what:these kids are not simply being manipulative or looking for attention. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well written with practical solutions
My son was recently diagnosed with Aspergers so I purchased many books on the subject to better help him. This book by far offers the most practical solutions to everyday school issues.Reading about theories and studies is helpful up to a point but as a parent I needed hands on solutions to common problems and this book provided many options that have worked for my son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe I'm Singing to the Choir!
I haven't found anyone who hasn't found this book incredibly valuable. I have bought at least four of them because my friends keep "borrowing" them and somehow don't manage to get them back to me. It is such a helpful book that lays out point by point how our kids experience elementary school, their various challenges and how to deal with them. Any parent who is actively involved with their child who has Autism Spectrum Disorder or Asperger Syndrome should have this book as a reference. And every elementary school teacher working with our AS kids should read it too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Every AS parent should have one of these
Since my son's diagnosis at the end of first grade, I've been purchasing book after book, trying to educate myself. The realities of being a parent of an AS child means that you have to educate, not only yourself, but your child's teachers. This book is a great way to go about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend Sensational Kids
Have you ever wanted to be a 'little mouse in the corner' to see what life is really like for children with a Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)?You can do that through Lucy Miller's new book, Sensational Kids. This book is truly sensational.I've been recommending it to a lot of the parents and teachers of students I service.
5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not finished reading yet, and our lives have already changed!
My 3.5 year-old daughter was diagnosed with SPD (at that time it was called SID) when she was 8 months old, and has been in and out of OT ever since.Lately she has had some significant behavior problems, and we have tried multiple strategies that haven't worked.I'm a counselor and parent coach, and I was beginning to feel very inept because all the strategies that I teach my clients weren't working with my own child. When I started reading this book, I realized (duh!) that the behavior issues were caused by SPD, and, therefore, typical "behavior management" techniques don't work the same way.We have changed our framework in responding to her behavior, and my daughter has become the most cooperative and happy child overnight. Her teachers have even noticed a huge change from just giving her a big tight hug when she begins to "melt down."It's incredible! Our lives have been completely changed in just a few days.Thank you, Lucy, and we hope to see you soon at the STAR Center in Colorado!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Lucy Miller...Congratulations and Many Thanks!
I am thrilled with Sensational Kids:Hope and Help for Children with SPD!Dr. Lucy Miller has done an outstanding job of making a complex subject understandable in an easy-to-read format.Sensory Processing Disorder creates life challenges for many children and their families. 3-0 out of 5 stars Other than the actual "Ferberizing", great info
I am a mother of 6 month old twins who recently *both* were waking every 1 to 2 hours on some nights.I read this book after trying No-Cry Sleep Solution for a month with lots of improvment on everything *except* the number of night-wakings.The girls fell asleep faster, easier, and with less help - but kept waking up, dropping only about one night-waking.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - REALLY helped
Our two older kids basically didn't fall asleep on their own for a long time, as well as woke up quite frequently at nights. We were big followers of Sears method. I think, our nervous system was quite drained as a result of bad and insufficient sleep.
4-0 out of 5 stars On the fourth night, it really seems to be working!
I think now, after trying the Ferber method, that a baby trying to fall asleep is just like a curious kitten that climbed up a tree and got herself stuck.I thought that my baby was always crying for us, but really she was crying for our help so she could fall back asleep. We were always rescuing our little kitten from that tall tree branch by picking her up out of the tree, without teaching her how to climb down on her own.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sun Shone on Me
Get the "Expanded Edition" if possible. Alcoholic issues and mental health issues have been around for quite some time. Woititz Marries the two in a wonderful owner's manual for your (or someone close to yours soul) The person close to me was severely compromised by her (sober) parents ACoA issues and the other siblings' willingness to buy into the insanity. If you can find a book called "Grandchildren of Alcoholics" by Ann W. Smith, it is an excellent resourse for people who dont see alcoholism in their own families, but perhaps do see it in their grandparents. Would love to hear from others on the same journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational/Easy to Read
This book is excellant for ACOA's who wish to gain a better understanding of how their childhood has lasting effects on their life as an adult. It was my first book on the subject, and a great introduction.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a good first book on the subject
I've read a number of books on this subject. I wouldn't say this book was unhelpful but is too absolute in its information to be anything but alarming to anyone tentatively looking for answers. It's also not very well written. I would suggest reading either "Recovery, A Guide for Adult Children of Alcoholics" by Gravitz & Bowden (an excellent first book) along with "A Primer on Adult Children of Alcoholics" by Cermak for an added layer; and then, absolutely essential as a more in-depth book: "Children of Alcoholism - A Survivor's Manual" by Seixas & Youcha. Leave the Woititz book for more information. By all means, read it. It does have excellent information; just remember the adage "Take what you need and leave the rest". Something she unfortunately forgot to include. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New edition has great updates
THE WOMANLY ART is an important book to me. I read an old edition while pregnant. Upon reading this new edition of the book with a baby in my arms, I fell in love with the words because they described mothering through breastfeeding and all the other concepts that I have since lived. I found information about flat nipples and nipple shields that was absent from earlier editions, and wished I had this information while I was struggling with a newborn. I reread other pages that provided the classic La Leche League information and now fully process the time-tested information. Information is factual and carries the spirit of mothering through breastfeeding with it.

2-0 out of 5 stars No help increasing milk supply
Yes, I agree with all the comments about this book being very smug about non-breast feeding or formula-supplamenting mothers. My problem with this book was the very clear indication on the back cover that there was information on how to increase milk supply. The was absolutely NO such information ANYWHERE in this book, and I read it cover to cover. The closest thing I found were a few reassuring comments that as long as your baby is gaining weight, and your diet is good, you should be fine. As a working mom who is pumping daily I have recently noticed a decline in my milk, and while their reassurance is very nice, what I need is ACTUAL practical advice. This book was seriously irritating.

5-0 out of 5 stars A breastfeeding mother's guide.
I purchased this book as a gift for a woman I work with who is pregnant and wanting to breastfeed her baby.

5-0 out of 5 stars .So far, so interesting
I love the philospohy behind this book, but Dr. Marshall goes one step further and adds the golden element of classroom testing. When he tells me I will need to use a particular strategy with about 2 % of my students, I feel confidence that this material has truly been tested in real situations.Part of the problem with many discipline programs that aim to address classroom management without rewards, tokens, and such is they often talk down to teachers for using token systems, but offer only theories and clinical data as proof without workable ideas for in the classroom.I am trying out Dr. Marshall's program and will see how far it takes me, but after the first two introductory lessons on the ABCD heirarchy, this weird quiet settled into my room, like the idea of democracy had just sunk into my students heads.Very heady stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars No More Class Store or Missed Recess
I purchased this book after an extremely challenging year of behavior problems in first grade. As a teacher who had previous success using rewards (giving plastic money that could be redeemed in a class store) and punishment (taking away recess time), this new class had so many problems that nothing seemed to work! During the summer, I read everything on behavior management I could find in preparation for my new third grade class and found this book while searching the web. Needless to say, this past year was the best year of teaching I've had in my short career of five years. Using the daily class meetings--the students' favorite part of the day--to solve problems and asking disruptive students to tell me "their level," I found that most problems went away quickly and students didn't get resentful of me because they had to reflect on how they were acting. Using the agenda for students to write down issues that bothered them was a great way to deal with tattling. I also linked the system with students who would forget homework. Rather than punish them, I would give them the Level 1 Essay to reflect on why they forgot their homework and what they could try so they could remember it. It worked! I also recommend buying "Positive Discipline in the Classroom" (Nelson) as a companion to this book if you want more step-by-step instructions for the classroom meeting. It picks up where Dr. Marshall's book leaves off regarding class meetings, especially on how to introduce it at the beginning of the year. One more thing: parents LOVE this system and will love you for using it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Civilized Alternative
Marshall makes a compelling case for giving children tools to evaluate their own behavioral options and make positive choices.I am looking forward to empowering my kindergarteners to be their best selves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for all Dads of Daughters
This is a book to be read and re-read at various stages of your daughter's life.It provides encouragement, insight and a fresh perspective on the girl or girls in your charge -- as well as some insight into your wife. Whenever friends tell me that they are pregnant with a girl, this is the gift I give.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful information!
My husband is a great dad. I gave this to him as a birthday gift. He loved it! He read it in 2 weeks. He is now an even greater dad!!!!!!! I advise you to buy this for any DAd you know who has a girl. Dads sometimes underestimate the power they have to shape their little girls. Your little girl will be formed by her Dad r/to: future jobs, relationships, life skills, choosing a mate, the list goes on and on. Yes, as a mom, I read it too! Buy it today!!!! P.S. Our little girl is 6 years old.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must
Ive been looking around for a book that gives insight to that father/daughter relationship, this is the book for it PERIOD.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall, OK, but beware of bias
You'll find lots of short, direct answers to a lot of common parenting and medical questions in this book. However, I was bothered by Dr. Brown's bias when it came to certain topics; she presents her opinions as established fact when at times it isn't.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!!!
This book is such a great reference for first time moms, like me. It has such straightforward advice and information for any level of parental education. I am a pediatric nurse practitioner in a large clinic and an experienced NICU nurse, and of course, you think that you know a lot. However, I can tell you that I learned so much with every page and chapter. I will recommend this book to my parents daily!! I am even taking it to my work when I return from maternity leave, in case I need a quick reference!!

5-0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL for the first time mom
I don't think I can give enough praise for this book.It is so well written with humor and common sense. As a new mother I skimmed it constantly for answers to my daughter's latest skin issue, bowel movement, eating schedule, etc.I consider myself well-read.I am college educated and have a good head on my shoulders...but there was nothing that fully prepared me for motherhood once I got there at 30.This book was a blessing for both our family and our pediatrician's office who had one less phone call to answer!

5-0 out of 5 stars A lifesaver!
I swear by this book, the techniques work like magic, and it made me feel okay about letting my baby sleep in the swing.I would not only recommend this book to all new parents, I would say that it is absolutely a requirement to read if you have a new baby or will soon.Don't have a baby without it!It's also a very interesting read.I absolutely loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The single most valuable purchase for our baby!
I started reading this book when my newborn was about 2 weeks old and I only wish I had read it before she was born because as soon as I started implementing the techniques that Dr. Karp suggests for calming babies, I found I was able to comfort my crying baby almost instantly.I plan to purchase this book for every expectant mom I know - its that good, and honestly, it may be the best gift any parent could receive!
5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my life!
It may sound a bit melodramatic but if this book didn't save my life it sure made it a zillion times better.Since my baby's arrival there is the BTB and the ATB -the "Before The Book" and the "After The Book". The difference has been like night and day...my newborn daughter used to cry and scream for what seemed hours and hours and got so upset she couldn't (and I couldn't help her to) find her way to calmness, after trying nearly everything we would end up crying together... I felt so scared and anxious whenever her fussy time would start...but after reading this book and aplying the techniques for the 5 S's well... I am scared no more. I feel truly empowered. These methods 1. the snug swaddling, 2. the white noise, 3. the swaying, 4. the sucking; they all work -if performed correctly. Now when my baby cries, it's no longer a marathon cry...we apply the layers of soothing and she is back to her happy calm self in no time, and if sleeping, she sleeps at least twice as long as before. I am forever grateful to the author.

4-0 out of 5 stars out of syn child
I got the book in great condition, and I can't really review it higher because I haven't gotten through the whole book yet. It seems very helpful so far, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars At last!!!!
I was told about this book by a doctor andfinally I feel better knowing there is a name for what our child was experiencing. We thought it was odd he never cuddled and did not like to walk on certain textures, etc. As i read this book,I could picture exactly how our child would react to situations and it all clicked. Now he is getting a therapist trained in sensory development.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for ANY parent
This book is the must-read for every parent, whether their children suffer from sensory integration or not.It is an eye opening look into the way we interpret our surroundings, and has given me information, tools, and hope for my daughter, who suffers severe developmental delays from this disorder.I would highly reccommend this book! ... A great resource book for everyone. Everyone can benefit something from using this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for Borderlines who really want help
This is an amazing workbook. The first time I looked through it, I thought is was over-simplified and would not be of much use to me.But I was wrong. It teaches readers how to understand where their emotions come from, how to identify emotions that seem to come out of nowhere, and how to control how we react to those overwhelming emotions. It's indispensible for anyone who has Borderline Personality Disorder and truly wants to get better. It's also great for anyone who has difficult controling extreme emotional feelings. The workbook format makes this very easy to read. The exercises are very helpful and informative.Heck, some of them are even fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for clients
I've found this to be a very user-friendly, readable workbook.Interesting, informative and normalizing w/o unnecessary jargon or psychobabble.I'm going through it with a client who's learning what it means to be "borderline".The DBT principles are beautifully woven in.It is a great introduction to her of what a DBT group could offer her and a very helpful adjunct to our individual therapy, especially now while a DBT group is not an option for her. ...
