5-0 out of 5 stars we've been Doing It Wrong for decades ~ and EveryOne is
paying a terrible price...
2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
I bought this book after having my son and because I am an elementary school teacher. I do agree it is easy to read however much of it IS common sense and quite frankly some of the statements turned me off a bit. I almost quit reading the book after the first few pages. For example, the author says boys should NOT be in daycare for the first three years of their lives. I think many working parents, like myself, would find that remark a bit preachy and generalized. I think I know kids pretty well having taught for many years and some of what the author writes had me going, "Whaaaat? That's crazy?!" I should have just saved the money and checked it out at the library instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feminism aside: Boys and Girls have distinct needs during particular developmental stages
Boys are often overlooked as the "touchy feeling" pop psychology movement caters to the self-esteem demands of little girls. The old patriarchal style of treating a little boy like a little man is not much emotional help either. When most mothers dream of a daughter despite having a son, it is no wonder why generations of men have grown up with mother issues that spill over into the gender war. So .... gender politics aside ... here is one way to meet the needs at the heart of boy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great suggestions and direction with christian insight
many idenifying stories and great, helpful suggestions. Really helped me with my two daughters 10 -12 years old. Honor, a lost concept in our world today. But a key concept to self esteem and esteeming others properly.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT parenting book!
I heard about this book through my church Sunday School class. It is GREAT!Offers wonderful and practical advice on how to parent to the "heart" of the child.Teaches parents the difference between a child "respecting" his parents and a child "honoring" her parents.I've read MANY parenting books but this one really opened my eyes up.Am I disciplining just to get the right response and just to "look" like a good parent?Or am I truly teaching my children the right behavior through the right attitude? Most helpful book. You won't be disappointed! PS - Our church also used teaching video made to accompany book (sold seperately)..it was *okay*...the book is MUCH more useful.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!An actual answer to many of my parenting questions!
The authors conducted a parenting seminar at my church a couple of years ago.I thoroughly enjoyed it and felt like I got a lot out of their presentation, but decided not to buy their book since I'd taken detailed notes. After several weeks, I found myself asking questions about some of the practical applications of their "honor-based" method of parenting.Eventually, I stopped doing it and went back to my previous free-form ideas and style. One day my two older children had been picking on each other mercilessly and whining beyond belief.I decided to buy a copy of Turansky and Miller's book to see if it would make a difference having the book itself handy for reference and taking notes.Much to my surprise, after reading the book and taking notes about the practicals details of teaching my children about "showing honor" to other family members, I noticed a difference in our family dynamics the first day! It's been quite awhile now that we've been implementing these ideas, and this weekend I had a group of middle school youth at church comment to me about how my children actually like their siblings and treat each other with kindness and respect.Evidently the kids who were talking to me thought this was really, REALLY unusual ... brothers and sisters who actually like each other?Who make an effort to be nice and speak kindly to each other (and about each other)?Wow ... what a concept. It was so encouraging to realize that the fruit of "honor" in our family was evident to others, too.I highly recommend this book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The "Missing Manual"
My wife and I were recently blessed with the placement of three beautiful children (ages 2, 3 & 6) through Children's Protective Services.Having never been parents before, we were initially overwhelmed with the responsibility and chaos. We spent several tearful evenings wondering if we were cut out for the challenges of child-rearing.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have....
This is a great book!It is easy to reference and easy to read.I use it all the time with questions I have about my kids sleep, diet, discipline, illness.... If you have a toddler, buy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight forward advice that works!
I read Baby 411 and when I found out there was a Toddler 411, I had to go out and get it. These authors know there stuff and there advice is so straight forward and helpful. I have been looking for a book on what to do with my son who is amazingly active, stubborn, and in need of direction. Most books out there were of little or no help regarding discipline and this book is just the opposite. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has a toddler....and when I say toddler, I mean 12 months, NOT TWO YEARS OLD!!! Go out and buy a copy of this for your library. It will be so worth it. I am keeping Baby 411 for my next who is due any day and will also be keeping Toddler 411. It's great! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Just not that into it.
I also didn't like it. I don't see what the hype is about it personally. I thought Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy was great but this one doesn't tell you anything that common sense wouldn't! I say if you want to try it out, use the library. That way you aren't wasting your money on it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for making me feel normal!
I love Vicki's books, her sense of humour and sometimes outrageous comments help me feel sane in this otherwise insane parenting ride.If you're looking for the politically correct, always attached parenting book...please save yourself the bother, you'll only get hot under the collar! If, on the other hand, you struggle to do your best, have a load of parent baggage left over from your parents, feel life has got to be more amusing than it currently is...then read and enjoy!

2-0 out of 5 stars Ummm... what is everyone raving about?
I unfortunaely am not like every other person who has read this book . I too am one of those "Hippie" moms (not the worst thing in the world to be called, but I am insulted nonetheless)- although there are a few cute anectdotes in this book that make me smile I can only say that is why I gave this book two stars instead of one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Father to Son to.......
I gave this book to my husband to give to our older son.
5-0 out of 5 stars a new father's best gift
I am 26 and I just became a father. I still feel like a kid myself. Someone gave me this book for a birthday present.I read it to see if these were letters I would send my son. They are not really letters but more like essays or thoughts. This man says so many things I wish I could say.He helps me understand what is important in my life, what is important to teach my boy when he gets old enough.I don't always agree with Kent Nerburn's thinking. But I think he is very wise.I wish my dad was like him.I hope I can be a dad like him.He knows what is important in life.He doesn't just preach or lecture. He unfolds his thinking with stories from his own life.Sometimes he made mistakes and he tells us.He learned. Now he is teaching me so I can teach my son.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
This book is nice, sweet, and somewhat insightful. But I wanted a book that spoke more of the relationship between a father and a son. The vast majority of essays/chapters in this book could have been written by anyone for anyone. For example, Nerburn warns of the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and extols the virtues of giving. But those lessons could have been taught by a mother to her daughter, a priest to a parishioner, or an uncle to a nephew. Many other essays in the book are similar in that they contain no unique perspective on the father-son relationship. (What does the "Power of Art" have to do with fatherhood?)This book reads like Chicken Soup for the Soul. In my opinion, the other reviews overrate this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Breastfeeding Questions Answered
I purchased this book after I began my journey to becoming a lactation consultant. Though I never read the book from cover-to-cover, I have covered nearly every page (some pages over and over!) over the last several months in my effort to support nursing mothers within the LLL philosophy. The information in this book is thorough and simply written, though at times I have considered it poorly organized. The BF Answer Book is probably the best book for helping breastfeeding moms. I hope to continue to learn from this book as I explore it's pages while providing support and information to mothers who need it.

Editorial Review

If parents, educators, and youth workers were to read only one book about helping adolescence—this would be the one. Chap Clark managed to get inside the world of US teenagers and reveal the depths of angst, pressure and loneliness they feel. Hurt is a illuminates the under layers of teen culture, the places where adolescents are most honest and vulnerable, only to discover that today’s youth are indeed a tribe apart—and it is the adults who have isolated them. 3-0 out of 5 stars Sociology, not theology
I bought this book expecting to get a healthy dose of sociology along with some seriouse theological reflection on the sociological data.I was wrong. In my opinion this book was too heavy on sociology and too lite on theology. If Clark would've spent more time connecting the sociological conclusions to theological implications, the book would've been a gem.

2-0 out of 5 stars These messages are obvious
I bought this book because I loved the No Cry Sleep Solution. After reading the first three examples and the "hidden" messages, I was completely disappointed and returned the book.I found that I didn't even need to finish reading the chapter to guess at what the message was.In one of the chapters, Pantley uses an example from her own parenting.I thought, okay, now she's going to share with us one of her mistakes and how she learned from it, and was about to give her some credit for being honest with her readers.Unfortunately for me, in this example she comes out having done everything correctly (not doing her child's homework project for him) and a number of her son's classmates' parents are in the wrong.Don't we all know that the child should do his/her OWN homework? And maybe by not allowing him/her to do the homework, we are saying that he/she isn't capable of doing it?Or that mom or dad will always be available to tackle the complicated stuff?I don't think that we need a book to figure that out. These messages are anything but subtle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging me to better parenting!
Reading this book has been a seriously eye-opening experience for me.While I "knew" that our children are little sponges and take in everything around them, I had no idea how many "hidden messages" I was giving my daughter that were so negative.I truly saw myself as an excellent and attached parent, and I still do, but this book has truly called me to a deeper parenting model. Not everyone comes from a wonderful family of origin, and this book showed me how many things I was passing on that I had no intention of teaching my daughter.I recommend this book to every parent!

5-0 out of 5 stars Most powerful book I've ever read!
Powerful is the only word to describe this book.I can't believe the impact it can have on your life.I think if all parents were required to read it before their children were born our world would be a place I'd be more than happy to raise my 2 children in!Read more

Editorial Review

Health-care practitioners are a polarized lot: generally speaking, either they subscribe wholeheartedly to conventional medical treatments, or they eschew them altogether. This can be a great source of frustration to parents, whose natural response to a child's illness is a desire to do everything possible to make that child well. Written by a natural-medicine practitioner, a traditionally licensed doctor, and a pediatric nurse, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MVP- Most Valuable Publication for Parents.....Available!!!
This book was the most important parenting book that I have ever owned. It comforted me on late nights when my child (newborn-teens)might be up coughing, itching, or vomiting, etc.It gave me recommendations that I could do to help ease symptoms that my child was experiencing. While it is in no way a substitute for individual medical advise, it is an intelligent and practical guide. I often shared it with my pediatricians who were/are highly respected in their profession(and who were grateful for the varied information). It integrates Western and holistic medicine as well as wellness suggestions.I recommend it to EVERY parent that I know and I often give it as a shower gift or baby gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll wear this book out
I received this book as a baby gift and practically wore it out in the first two years of my child's life. She's 11 years old now and we still use it.Because of the variety of remedies suggested, anyone can use this book and find one that's comfortable for their family. We've been able to avoid antibiotics completely with the advice from the book. It's now my baby gift of choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Parenting Handbook
Although some of the passages in this book and it's companion volumes are quite dated, it is still one of the most helpful parenting books that I have found in 25 years of teaching preschoolers. Many parents through the years have breathed a sigh of relief after reading these books which start with "Your One Year Old" and go all the way up to "Your Ten to Fourteen Year Old".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for parents of 5 year olds
When I gave birth, I hoped the manual would have popped out right after the baby, alas,I was wrong. We used The What to expect books until they no longer covered our age group. A local bookstore suggested Dr. Ames' books and they have been a GOD SEND! These books are the best from 2 to 5 so far they have been right on the money...Our son turns six in March and we are buying the 6 book tomorrow. My husband & I can not think of any other book(s) that has been more helpful or informative, than those written by Dr. Ames. Kudos to her and her easy to digest books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing tools to help you become emotionally strong
With all the self-help/self-understanding/relationship books I've read (including Mars and Venus), yours has been the most influential in my life. It has given me the tools I've needed most to be my own person and begin to repair the damage my emotional unavailability has caused for both myself and my (beautiful, wonderful, amazing) wife.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book for both parent & child to read.
This book should be a requirement in every home.It is wriiten for a teen but shoul dbe read by both parent and child. The concept of the 40 assets is fundamentally simple. The book defines the assets and then gives adviceon how the adolescent, parent(s), community, school, and congregation canhelp to ensure that a child is brought up with all of the assets they needto be a successful person. It has examples of the successes thatcommunities across the country have had setting the concepts of the assetsinto into motion. The excellence of the book is reinforced by a lecture Iattended by Dr. Benson 2 months ago.The concept of the developmentalassets being the framework for a successful, well-rounded person makesperfect sense. It should be adopted as a National standard.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for teens and their parents!
We like the book so much that we are adopting the asset building concepts featured!Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful book
As a teacher I found that this book had many fun and functional activities.I do wish this book had more activities for older (teenage) students with moderate to severe disabilities; but, a great book overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book for Sensory Integration out there!!
I *LOVED* this book.It was such a quick read that I got through it in two days, *with* two kids underfoot, but there certainly was no lack in valuable content to read. This has transformed the way that I understand and work with my daughter, and she has had a diagnosis for sensory integration disorder for years!I reccommend this to *any* parent, even those without sensory kids....

5-0 out of 5 stars Best resource for activities I've found!
I found this book very helpful for use in my field as a social worker who works with children and adolescents, not just with sensory issues, but across a wide spectrum of issues. This book offers MANY activities targeting children of all ages and with diverse interests, and I have also found it helpful to recommend to parents as options for activities to entertain their kids with! ... I found this book to be a good read, and generally helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fuel the Revolution
This book will set you straight about what is healthy and what is not.All other nutrition advice that I have come across is weak and ineffective.I am buying this book as well as Eat to Live for everyone I know and meet; month by month as I can afford.Do the same for there is no gift comparable to the gift of health.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Diet on Earth
This is one book that no parent(s) or "potential" parent(s) should be without. It talks about "to be" mothers and the foods they eat can affect their childs development before they are even conceived.

1-0 out of 5 stars Violence Begets Violence
Dobson has it wrong. Children's susceptibility to God and the attributes of God has to do with rearing them with the love of God in their hearts from the beginning, praying and relying on God, and being taught to please God. Violence begets violence. To spank and be violent toward children is proof of the perpetrator's ignorance of modern scientific evidence that spanking is detrimental to the emotional, physical and spiritual evolution of children. Ignorance begets ignorance, and if you're in charge of children, feeding your mind with ignorance is no benefit to your child.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful advice for the christian family.
My mother in law recommended this book to me after the birth of my first child. She had read the original version when her children were young.I also bought the original version and used it with my first child. Now that my son is firmly entrenched in his terrible two's I decided to update to this newer edition to see if Dr. Dobson had any new insights several decades later.I'm pleased to say he sticks to his guns and The New Dare to Discipline is almost word for word the same as the original.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be misled
This is a great book.My parents used these principles and so do I.It advocates spanking among other forms of discipline. It contains balanced, tried and true principles for child rearing. This book never advocates abuse, beating, shoving, pushing or broken arms as some on this site have claimed.Almost of all of the kids I knew growing up got the occasional spanking.I can't name one, who feels that a spanking was abuse or who feels they were emotionally damaged by it. Child abuse is a horrific evil in the world, but this isn't child abuse. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Anxious Billy-Bully.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Dear god please think of the Children" or "Falafel."
Amazon truly did you all a favor by mercifully offering you an excerpt of ten whole pages of Mr. O'Reilly's book. This was a luxury I was not given, and now I can't help but feel it's too late for my poor soul. I stomached the whole enchilada, and I warn you this is one Mexican (or wet-back, as Mr. O'Reilly ocassionally refers to people of Mexican origin) dish you do NOT wish to tackle. The first ten pages alone tell you exactly what kind of person Bill O'Reilly is. It is obvious that this iteration of this children's edition of his wildlyasinine "The O'Reilly Factor" is just another attempt to gouge his enamored viewers for more money. This book offers no real advice that cannot be already garnored by the occasional disney channel blurb or the elusive "common sense." It takes him two precious pages to explain to his obviously mentally ill readers that "real friends" are not anything like those on the show "Friends." Being a fan of the show I have to agree with O'Reilly, but then I'd be forced to ask "What the hell Bill?!" He recently settled a lawsuit pressed against him for a rumored $10 million by a Ms. Mackris for sexual harassment. He attempts to teach our children about sex, but is himself a barely disguised chauvenist and borderline deviant. His previous "The O'Reilly Factor" has it's own section on sex. Here he shows just how little respect for woman and boastfully describes many of his "sexual conquests." In his fiction novel "Those Who Tresspass" he self inserts himself as an irresistable and dangerous womanizer. Feel free to use the main character in this novel as a personality guide for O'Reilly himself. He is desperately and consistently seeking admiration from his audience. It's both sad and sickening. He barely alludes to his "rambunctious" childhood misadventures with his friends, trying to pass by his readers what he "learned" from those experiences. However, both his massively (depressingly) popular cable "news" show and his series of near toxic books reveal a man borderline insane. He's rediculously angry at the most obnoxiously inane things, a chronic liar, and has the memory span of an 80 year old hamster with alzheimers. He will literally make points in this book and provide evidence that counters his own argument. His show is no different. He will make wildly offensive comments. When his callers call him up on it, he has his chronies "replay the tape." Of course, in the year 2006 we are completely unable to actually replay this tape on modern television for viewers, as you can see when his chronies shout back off camera a completely different statement. He has never apologized for his actions, only grunting with simian aggression and angrily moving on to the next segment. This man cannot hold multiple marriages, yet he attempts to teach children about relationships. Mr. O'Reilley is to televised journalism what pornography is professional photography. Any person who truly consider themselves a conservative should be horrified by how he represents the demographic. A recent example is of a jewish man who called into his show to make his case that having Christmas during school as he grew up made him feel uncomfortable because he felt constantly pressured to be more Christian. O'Reilly responded by telling the man that if he didn't want to live in a Christian nation he should move to Israel. Any truly religious person whether Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or Buddhist should find a comment like this wildly offensive. Well, perhaps the Buddhists will let that one go. In a country where religious freedom is one of it's main tenets, perhaps O'Reilly would be advised to know that a marginal amount of secularism in public and government institution is necessary for religious freedom. The founding fathers considered religion a largely personal matter, as did Jesus. "Render unto Caesar's what is Caesar's."
5-0 out of 5 stars During breaks in bingo....
...I read this book.I find it a pleasant diversion (like Mr. O'Reilly himself) as well during those all-too-frequent shuffleboard lulls. If he'd been born a century or so earlier, Bill would've been one of those "shoot from the hip" type of fellows; pity then that he wasn't.I like Bill. That's a clear as I can make it.So I figured I'd turn my kids on to him -- sounds innocent enough, right?Wrong. See, my kids hated this book.Mocked it.Made it an ongoing joke at every dinner table since."But Bill has some good advice," I pleaded with them over chips and salsa one leathery afternoon, "he's a real shoot from the hip guy, kids".Doh! ...
