5-0 out of 5 stars Lively and readable
This book surveys the literature and drama produced about and for children and their parents during the Harlem Renaissance, the period associated with the flowering of the arts not only in Harlem but in other urban centers as well. Believing that the "New Negro" would ultimately arise from black youth, W.E.B. Du Bois, Carter G. Woodson, Langston Hughes, Alice Dunbar-Nelson, and other major figures took an impassioned interest in the literary models offered to children.

5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone charged with the responsibility for keeping order and safety within their school populations
The Bully In The Book And In The Classroom by academician and educational consultant C. J. Bott cogently addresses the often covert problem of bullying in the halls, offices, and classrooms of elementary, junior high, and senior high schools. Bott informs parents, classroom teachers and school staff members just what to look for and how to react when witnessing harassment among students, including the behavior of bullies, their targeted victims, and the bystanders. Each individual chapter highlights a particular age group and describes the most frequent types of bullying associated with each group. Bott also provides informative reviews of books recommended for each reading level from elementary and middle school titles, to more sophisticated reading for high school students. Each book review contains an in-depth summary, activities, and quotes. The final section is dedicated to providing resources for teachers, librarians, counselors, administrators, and parents. Superbly written and accessibly presented, The Bully In The Book And In The Classroom should be considered "must" reading for anyone charged with the responsibility for keeping order and safety within their school populations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic fantasy collection
Auerbach and Knoepflmacher have assembled a fascinating collection of fairy tales by Victorian women writers. The collection offer rarities by well-known writers such as E. Nesbit, Christina Rosetti and Francis Hodgson Burnett and by forgotten, but equally interesting, writers such as Jean Ingelow. Absorbing reads all on their own, the stories also offerinteresting contrasts to the better-known Victorian children's fantasies authored by men, such as Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and the Oz books. The editors' discussion of the stories (and one novel) are enlightening without being heavy-handed.An extra pleasure is the inclusion of several illustrations. This is that rare piece of lit. crit. that can be read aloud to children--I particularly recommend E. Nesbit's stories for this purpose. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique way to expand a child's imagination!
Most of the time when I read my daughter a book, we end up discussing little things relating to what's happening in the book. It could be something that she was reminded of, or something I want to share with her at that time. Books are not only for reading...they're for helping expand minds and imagination. There is no end to what a book can accomplish for its reader.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Gift
This book is a series of games for parents (aunts, uncles, grandparents, teachers, and other interested parties) to teach children the myriad skills necessary to read, write, and imagine. Each game is based on a classic of children's fiction. And for each game, the author, Peggy Kaye, tells the story of playing the game with one of her students. One of the great charms of this book is that it is so full of vivid characters. First, there are all the characters from the Pantheon of children's fiction--Stuart Little, Curious George, Pippi Longstocking--who fairly leap from the page in Peggy Kaye's shrewd and engaging recounting of each of these 28 classic tales. Peggy Kaye's students--Molly, Mathias, Sara, to name but a few--also come alive page after page with their individual enthusiams, frustrations, trepidations, and accomplishments. Finally, there's Peggy Kaye herself. It's no mystery why her student Bonnie wanted to make Friendship Necklaces with her.She comes through as charmed, empathic, and committed, with a flair for acting. By the end of the book, you'll understand why Peggy Kaye keeps a box of Teaching Treasures and why it's full.5-0 out of 5 stars Scrumptious Ideas to Celebrate Children and Books They Love
In her introduction, Peggy Kaye indicates that games played with books should be "carefully chosen." One doesn't want to debase the wonder of a classic book with sleazy peripherals that distract a child's appreciation of the book. Read more

Editorial Review

Like the Oklahoma dust bowl from which she came, 14-year-old narrator Billie Jo writes in sparse, free-floating verse. In this compelling, immediate journal, Billie Jo reveals the grim domestic realities of living during the years of constant dust storms: That hopes--like the crops--blow away in the night like skittering tumbleweeds. That trucks, tractors, even Billie Jo's beloved piano, can suddenly be buried beneath drifts of dust. Perhaps swallowing all that grit is what gives Billie Jo--our strong, endearing, rough-cut heroine--the stoic courage to face the death of her mother after a hideous accident that also leaves her piano-playing hands in pain and permanently scarred. 4-0 out of 5 stars Be careful with this book
My daughter was allowed to borrow this book from her school library when she was 7 because she tested high on her SRI. She was sitting on the couch reading it with tears welling up in her eyes. I read the book, and it is a beautifully-written, powerful piece, BUT be careful. If your child is not ready for this emotionally, DO NOT allow her/him to read it. The baby and mom die horribly, the father withers away and the girl is racked with guilt and blame. It's not something you give lightly to a child of any age.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Mon avis...
Though this book is well written and has a creative style I absolutely despised the story. The reason I dislike this book has nothing to do with it being "very sad" as some other reviewers have commented. Instead I dislike the book because the story is lacking and I do not think the author does a good job of creating empathy towards the characters. Usually when a reading a "sad" book I have sympathy towards the characters. In this book there was none. Also I felt the character development was lacking. I don't reccomend this book if you are looking for a good story I do reccomend it though if you are interested in learning about free verse or seeing how the author shaped the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetry
This book is AWESOME! I believe that it is simply amazing how this authour was able to portray so eloquently the joys and hardships of Billie Jo during the Dust Bowl, especially when writing it all in poetry. This a must-read for anyone really, even those who are 10, like me. I loved it because of the above reason, and, because Billie Jo is so truthful and pure about here feelings in this book, and you don't see a lot of that nowdays. My advise is to READ IT!!!!!!! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A mishmash of everything
This book tries to cover a lot of ground, but in the end you get a sense that it has gotten you anywhere. The first impression I got was that this book was actually a bunch of journal articles thrown together because there isn't much sense of continuity to this book.It doesn't have an overall theme and the topics covered don't seem to connect well.It starts off with a short biography of the Grimms, so far so good. After that, it covers the orgins of the tales, a little dry, but not bad. After that, there's a chapter about how the Grimm tales indoctrinate children into the bourgeoisie. The Marxism seems a little dated. After that, out of the blue, you get a chapter on Henri Pourrault, an obscure writer of fairy tales. It's never explained why this writer is in this book, but I guess the author really liked this journal article and couldn't resist throwing it in.
5-0 out of 5 stars For serious students of European fantasy literature
The Brothers Grimm: From Enchanted Forests To The Modern World by Jack Zipes (Professor of German, University of Minnesota) is an informed and informative examination of the lives of the famous fairy tale gatherers, writers, and preservers, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. From their humble origins amidst poverty and prejudice to their ultimate contribution to literature as a whole, The Brothers Grimm is a truly fascinating account and a "must-read" for serious students of European fantasy literature and folklore. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars From juvenile series fiction's changing presentation
Science Fiction, Children's Literature And Popular Culture proves a college-level cross-section analysis of representative works of science fiction, children's literature and popular culture to examine depictions of coming of age in the modern world. From picture and comic books which appeal to the young to films, videos, and popular novels and writings, this covers everything from juvenile series fiction's changing presentations to multimedia presentations.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding anthology of informative essays.
Westfahl's essays in Science Fiction, Children's Literature And Popular Culture, range widely over American children's and YA popularentertainment, starting with a little known children's series but coveringSuperman, Horatio Algier and the Hardy boys, SF film (esp. the fifties)Star Trek and even music video in the context of film and advertising.Westfahl, a well known SF critic, allows himself more free-play in theseessays. His playfulness gives rise to many intriguing speculations, connecting popular culture phenomena in convincing but previouslyunarticulated ways. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Worthy Subject, Forgettable Biography
It's no small task to create an enchanting picture of an adored figure in children's literature.Unfortunately, Leonard Marcus was not up to the challenge. The biography is too linear, too literal, and written too much like a graduate school study.Still, the segment about her studies at Bank Street College of Education (I'm a grad) was interesting, as was the description of her evolving sense of child development as it affected her story crafting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtfully written
Thoughtfully written biography of an intriguing woman author. All the "interesting" details present without dropping into lurid. Many would consider this a "dry" reading book, but in the context of that specific time in US history she really broke ground, both professionally and personally.

3-0 out of 5 stars Put to sleep by the book
Awakened by the Moon is a somewhat interesting account of the life and times of Margaret Wise Brown but it drags itself down in minute details. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Auseful book based on solid research
What's good about this book is that it gathers information directly from the horses mouth; few books on education bother to ask kids what they think.Author Mary L. Warner asked 1400 adolescents a whole battery of questions on what they thought about the books they had read and how these books influenced them, and the results are interesting to say the least. One surprising finding is the strong impact of the "chicken soup" series of books.Who knew?Salinger's classic The Catcher in the Rye figures prominently, as well as the Bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars When You Are Done Reading ORDER OF THE PHOENIX.....
......read this book about the great writer, J. K. Rowling!I like how she played guitar and drew pictures, besides doing her writing. The author of this biography says that J. K. Rowling and Harry Potter are like the Beatles. From what my parents say about them, I think so, too. Then I heard on the webcast interview from London that J. K. Rowling's favorite group is the Beatles--so, it's like this author knew that already! You'll love this book if you like Harry Potter and J. K. Rowling. I love the names of the fungi in the Forest of Dean.If you grew up there, maybe you'd have J. K. Rowling's imagination, too!She read lots of books, too, which figures, doesn't it?This book tells more about the books she read than any other book I've seen about her.Over the summer, I'm going to write a letter to J. K. Rowling using her addresses in the back of this book. This book is packed with information!Buy it and read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love This Book!
Most of the books about J. K. Rowling are either too young for me or are just gossip about her. This book tells me about her life and her writing and about Harry Potter in a way I like. It's for older kids and adults. It's the most up-to-date book about J. K. Rowling on Amazon. There is a lot of information in the back, too, like addresses where to write to her and addresses for the charities she's involved with.It has pictures in it, too.I got this book as a gift, since my dad knew I would already get Order of the Phoenix.I love this book!I love J. K. Rowling and Harry Potter!I recommend this book to everyone who loves J. K. Rowling and Harry Potter like I do!

I bought this book and Sean Smith's biography of the same name as I love the Harry Potter books and wanted to find out more about the author, who seems to be quite private and doesn't reveal much about herself. There is no new material in Kirk's book - in fact she has taken a lot of the information from Smith's book which came out 2 years ago so you may as well just buy that one!Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I recommend for any teacher or parent!
I found this book in my local library, and had to get it for everyone I knew with children.I like the idea of literature and science, and everything in school and life, being connected.Schools don't do enough interdisciplinary teaching that lets children understand the connections between everything in life. This books is a good start towards that. While I would prefer the inclusion of more literary works aimed at older children, the fact that the authors have included activities and questions, along with specific lessons for specific grade levels, makes this book unique and invaluable. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Reacquainting Myself with Lewis
I read "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" when I was 9. I think two years later I read, "The Last Battle." I enjoyed both of them. For a long time, I forgot about Narnia, but when the movie version of "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" came out, I started thinking about Narnia again. I saw the movie and thought it was quite faithful to the book, as I remember it.
4-0 out of 5 stars A celebration of recognition
Being rather fond of both the novells and the essays of C.S. Lewis reading books on his work often turns out to be a rather disapointing experience. However interesting to a certain extend most of them do not catch the reader, dryasdust as they are written.
5-0 out of 5 stars Glimpse of Greatness
This is a well written and thoughtful introduction to C.S. Lewis. The author walks you thru the life and accomplishments of C.S. Lewis (Known as "Jack" by his friends and admirers).
