5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and informative
I was very impressed with Ms. Lurie's previous book, Don't Tell the Grownups, because she recognized and applauded the inherent subversion of great children's literature. I would have chucked any book that the anti-Harry Potter forces liked, with namby-pamby characters who ALWAYS followed the rules - straight into the donation bin - only because I NEVER throw books in the garbage. This book picks up on the same theme, showing that books such as Little Women, which are considered "sweet and sentimental" today, were actually quite radical for the time they were written. She also looks at the lives of the authors and the influences on them. I certainly never realized that L. Frank Baum's wife and mother-in-law were outspoken feminists, which probably explains the presence of so many strong female characters in his work, sometimes to the detriment of the males.
5-0 out of 5 stars Your favorite childhood books, deconstructed!
I just finished this, and loved it, loved it, loved it!Alison Lurie, besides being a great novelist, teaches Children's Literature at Cornell. This book "deconstructs" classics such as Little Women, The Wizard of Oz, Charlotte's Web, etc, with such acute observations that it was a great joy to read. Of course the book talks about Harry Potter and the criticism it has received from certain religious circles. This is not new in children's lit: The Wizard of Oz suffered the same kind of stigma. It was interesting to read how nothing is new in the realm of religious intolerance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Book
This was another nice listing of recommended books. There were many books to choose from, such as Anne of Green Gables, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, Missing May, and so much more! There are summaries for each book, along with the number of pages, the author, year it was published, and the genre or subject. My only complaint is that the book does not divide the book into specific categories. For example, there will be a chapter called "Moving On: Books for Ages 10 and Up", but it's not divided into historical fiction, biography, sports, or another subject. It would be easier to find books that way! Otherwise, it was a fantastic book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not the best guide out there
This is a decent guide, so it's too bad it lacks age levels. If you are looking for a more up-to-date guide with more books and an age range for each book, try Great Books for Girls by Kathleen Odean, revised in 2002.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now or Neverland
In "Now or Neverland," Ann Yeoman invites her readers to explore the complex world of the archetype of the eternal boy (puer aeternus) through her lively psychological analysis of J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan.Yeoman's book is an outstanding example of interdisciplinary scholarship. She intelligently integrates the work done in such seemingly diverse fields as Mythological Studies (Eliade, Campbell, Kerenyi), Literary Criticism (Frye, Calvino, Armitt), and Analytical Psychology (Jung, Hillman, von Franz). Her use of literature, both poetry (Coleridge, Auden, Keats, Wordsworth, Shelley) and fiction (Dostoyevsky, Joyce, Melville), to illuminate various dimensions of puer psychology is outstanding and speaks highly of her as a literary scholar. Her cultural contextualization of Peter Pan in history (Edwardian England, the current Information Revolution, the British public school system) presents a provocative analysis of the collective psychology of the times. Finally, her reinterpretation and elaboration of earlier (1970s) studies of puer psychology and psychopathology by analytical (Jungian) psychologists, makes her one of the foremost authorities on the psychology of what popular culture has called the "Peter Pan Syndrome". There is little doubt that Now or Neverland will become a classic and take its place alongside Hillman's "Puer Papers" and von Franz's "The Problem of Puer Aeternus."

5-0 out of 5 stars A New Persective on the Peter Pan Myth
Peter Pan was always a childhood favorite of mine. Now, having read Ann Yeoman's "Now and Neverland. Peter Pan on the Myth of Eternal Youth",I will approach the story and its characters with a new and, dare I say it, "grown-up" (sorry Peter) perspective. 5-0 out of 5 stars

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pictures
Wonderful glossy full spread pictures of the beautiful grasses and flowers. Makes you want to live on the prairie!!2-0 out of 5 stars Rather disappointing
I was disappointed in this book right from the start. To pay [the money I had to pay], I expected to get a hardcover book. Instead, what I found was a flimsy paperback which was as thin as a magazine. Instead of showing scenery from the time Laura lived in places, there were a lot of pictures of plain grasslands of the present time. I turned the page only to find a big picture of a piece of grass! How boring! To my dismay, there were no pictures of Mr. Edwards, Nellie Oleson, Mr. and Mrs. Boast, Mary Power, Reverend Alden, and absolutely no mention of the beloved bulldog, Jack. One advantage in owning this book is that it is much more detailed informative than the "Little House" books. We learn about Laura's younger brother, the fact that the Ingalls once owned a hotel, how Rose Wilder also had a son and died, and shockingly, that Rose obtained a divorce. If you are a hardcore enthusiast for Laura Ingalls Wilder things, then one reason you might want to get this book is because of the pictures from the Ingalls family album. There are lovely pictures of all of Laura's sisters, Ma, Pa, Rose, and Almanzo. The family portrait of the Wilder's is also a plus. Overall, this book was OK. The pictures of Laura and Almanzo's farm, homes, car, horses, and family settings are all good and the information is refreshing. However, the author fails to mention numerous important people in Laura's childhood as well as pictures of them. Instead of putting pictures of friends and family, he puts in way too much scenery from which the pictures were taken in the 1990's, and not from the 1880's.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely book
A beautifully photographed book that gives the reader an idea of what the places in Wilder's books really looked like. These sights are what Laura was envisioning when she wrote her childhood memories.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Textbook
If I was teaching a course on fairy tales, this book would be the course's primary text.Editor Jack Zipes compiled the book with such a purpose in mind and it's a job well done. The largest section, The Texts of the Great Fairy Tale Tradition, is comprised of fairy tale texts grouped into over 35 themes.Examples of themes include: Love Conquers All, Abandoned Children, Shrewd Cats, and Envious Sisters. Each theme has a minimum of two tales--usually more--with an introduction explaining the history of the theme and its tales.Zipes' introduction includes a definition of the literary fairy tale and its history as a genre.Critical essays by respected scholars are included in the Criticism section.Short biographies of the authors, black and white illustrations, and a selected bibliography add to the resources found inside. My only wish is that an index to aid with finding and cross-referencing tales had been included. This book makes a great reference book or textbook for the armchair scholar at an affordable price. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable to Alexander's fans
The Prydain Chronicles have become a fantasy classic, a collection of five novels and one short story collection that are considered by many to be up there just below J.R.R. Tolkien's works (which the Chronicles resemble, in their depth and use of mythology). Now Michael Tunnell's guide to the Prydain Chronicles has been rereleased, and it's definitely worth getting.4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
If you love the Prydain Chronicles, as I do, this companion is a must have. It's an excellent resource if you want to find out about a character in the Chronicles without going back and re-reading.It's veryeasy-to-use, and well done, one volume I definitely recommend adding toyour personal library when you have the chance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Full of interesting facts....
I always wondered why someone would use a name that started with initials. This and other interesting facts are explained in this book by Sean Smith about the life of JK Rowling. If you are a fan of the Harry Potter series this book would be an enjoyable read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good for book reports!
I read this book for a book report, and found that it was extremely interesting. While a bit dry at times, it got very interesting around the time at which she was getting the book published. I highly recommend this book for Harry Potter fans, and for teenagers needing to read biographies for book reports.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for Harry fans!
I found this book very entertaining. JK Rowling's life has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride but the downs like her messy marriage and her mother's long term illness made me want to turn the pages all the more to see how it all turned out for her. It's an unpretentious read packed with facts about the author that I had no idea about. You can't always believe what you read in the newspapers! It's fun joining the author in trying to find Harry Potter references in her own life story and this book doesn't take itself too seriously. JK Rowling is a good writer but her own story is a great one. Thoroughly recommended. ... Read more
