4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed, but useful overall
Girl-specific lists are always up for extra criticism, and this is no different. The authors do a great job of discussing their criteria, and for me there's a gap between theirs and mine. I want great books, that also are positive for girls. Theirs seems to possibly be books that are positive for girls, but except for that aren't that great. I'd rather a smaller, more selective list.5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for your book shelf
This is a carefully constructed resource of books about and for girls. While it includes recommendations on the well known..."Little Women", "Anne of Green Gables" and "Harriet the Spy", it also includes recommendations on unusual, clever and hard to find books such as Jan Andrews' "Very Last First Time" amd Jacqueline Dembar Greene's "Out of Many Waters".5-0 out of 5 stars Once Upon a Heroine: 400 Books for Girls to Love
I can't tell you how excited I am to have found this book.As a mother of a 2 1/2 year old little girl, I am thrilled that I will have found a tool in which to seek out books that will help build her self esteem, selfconfidence and self assurance. It'll accompany me on our many trips to thelibrary. The books listed within, are phenomenal. And best of all, it'llcarry her from toddler to teenage! It's a must have! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I found this to be an excellent resource to help locate books with black boys as main characters. This book is divided into different sections --- preschoolers and upward --- which helps you select age appropriate titles. Wonderfully detailed descriptions and opinions of books are given as well as publisher information, etc.Books are of a great variety (educational, entertaining, etc.).Certain authors are highlighted with a biographical sketch. Also highlighted are real black boys of various ages who briefly tell of there favorite book.I never new that 90% of these books existed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Black Books Galore
I purchased the book relating to boys and found it to be an extremely helpful resource in locating books that depict black children in the stories. The book entries are categorized by the age of the child reader from newborn to teenager, and is accompanied by a thorough description of its contents, as well as background information on the authors. I know I will return to this resource time and time again as my grandson enters each new phase of growing up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Prompted to re-read the classics
I stumbled across this book a few years ago when browsing through the various sections on Amazon's web site (it was in the National Public Radio section). The reviews sounded interesting, so I took a chance. I am so glad I did.5-0 out of 5 stars Value of Classic Stories
The themes of classic stories have not been improved upon over the years. As well as awaken a child's moral imagination, they also reinforce character traits with biblical origin and timeless application.I also recommend Storybook Mentors, Grown-up wisdom from children's classics for families, teachers and counselors, and all who love classic literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom in Action
Professor Guroian's latest work provides the reader with a challenging prescription for developing moral excellence. The framework of the Aristotleian notions of intellectual and moral virtue give an ancient andyet ever so modern perspective to his understanding of the practicalscience of ethics illuminated by fairy tales and modern children'sliterature. Those who are responsible for the young will do well to makefrequent reference to this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you
Thanks to authors Bates and Latempa for their delightful and intelligent approach to traveling with kids. We have used books such as Linnea in Monet's Garden, Eloise in Paris, and the Madeleine books in our travels to Paris, but what's impressive about this book is the way the authors have drawn on so many other children's classics as a backdrop for family travel. I write about family travel myself and highly recommend this book --it's a good read whether you are packing to go, or just happy as an armchair traveler.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiration
This book is a great jumping-off point for family vacations in the US or abroad. It will inspire you to travel AND read with your family!

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb and easy-to-use reference especially recommended for librarians
Now in an updated edition for 2006, The Newberry And Caldecott Awards by the Association For Library Service To Children is a straightforward catalog of children's books that received the Newberry award (2006-1922) and the Caldecott Award (2006-1938). Each entry lists the title, author, and illustrator of the book, along with a brief summary of the book's and art style, and a supplementary list of other honors the book earned. The 2006 edition also features a brand new essay by children's literacy consultant Sue McCleaf Nespeca, "Sharing Picture Books with Children to Promote Art Appreciation", which reviews the elements of great art and reveals how modern children's book artists incorporate such into their work. A superb and easy-to-use reference especially recommended for librarians.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Resource

Whether you like cats, kings and queens, basketball, math, or magic tricks, there's sure to be a book in here that is right for you. The book is divided into subject categories with categories about the subject. (e.g.: sports, than one of the categories is football.) The back of the book includes a basic reference shelf for home, book-related parties, tips for reading out loud, lists of books in series, and much, much more. This is an invaluable resource and a perfect gift for all kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Children's Literature
I wish I had had this wonderful and varied list of children's books when I was growing up.Because I didn't, I know now that I missed out on a great deal of excellent reading.Just think, this collection of reviews covers 550 years of children's literature. There are 133 titles, and the reviews are written by 62 people from every walk of life. This is truly an amazing book, one that you will want to read from cover to cover for the pure enjoyment of it.It also contains brief biographies of all the authors as well as biographies of each of the reviewers. This is a book that should be at the elbow of every parent and teacher, to suggest different titles based on the reading readiness of each child. The editor has thoughtfully put together a compilation that you won't want to miss.
5-0 out of 5 stars An English Teacher's Review
In reading the reviews in Rev. Peck'sgreat undertakingI have foundthat many of them are ofthings I haveread in my youth and others are of things I have heard about, but never read. Of the ones I have read, I find myself wanting to experience them again with a grandchild. Many fairy tales, fables and stories as they have been presented in modern times have been Disneyfied far away from the original and show little resemblance to what the author actually wrote. Many author's of children's literature were not concerned with political correctness if it interfered with an imaginative and worthwhile story. These reviews are a fine avenue for a parent, teacher or grandparent to refresh or increase their knowledge in preparation for exposing their own charges to the wonderful world of the imagination as represented in classic children's literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars The musings ofa highly intelligent mind
Susan Cooper is probably best known for writing the superb Dark Is Rising sequence of five children's novels, one of which garnered the Newbery Medaland another a Newbery Honor. This book, however, is not fiction but aboutfiction, at least primarily. The essays and speeches contained here discussexperiences from Cooper's own childhood (in World War II England), thepiercing nostalgia brought on by finding a new copy of a long-belovedthough mostly-forgotten storybook, the author's experiences with thetheater (and friendship with Jessica Tandy), and many other topics. Thetone is often introspective, but never arrogant, and the book can be readin segments or in a single sitting. Definitely worthwhile for anyone withthe slightest interest in children's literature . . . there is far morehere than one might expect. ... Read more
