A lifesaver!
I swear by this book, the techniques work like magic, and it made me feel okay about letting my baby sleep in the swing.I would not only recommend this book to all new parents, I would say that it is absolutely a requirement to read if you have a new baby or will soon.Don't have a baby without it!It's also a very interesting read.I absolutely loved it!

The single most valuable purchase for our baby!
I started reading this book when my newborn was about 2 weeks old and I only wish I had read it before she was born because as soon as I started implementing the techniques that Dr. Karp suggests for calming babies, I found I was able to comfort my crying baby almost instantly.I plan to purchase this book for every expectant mom I know - its that good, and honestly, it may be the best gift any parent could receive!
Saved my life!
It may sound a bit melodramatic but if this book didn't save my life it sure made it a zillion times better.Since my baby's arrival there is the BTB and the ATB -the "Before The Book" and the "After The Book". The difference has been like night and day...my newborn daughter used to cry and scream for what seemed hours and hours and got so upset she couldn't (and I couldn't help her to) find her way to calmness, after trying nearly everything we would end up crying together... I felt so scared and anxious whenever her fussy time would start...but after reading this book and aplying the techniques for the 5 S's well... I am scared no more. I feel truly empowered. These methods 1. the snug swaddling, 2. the white noise, 3. the swaying, 4. the sucking; they all work -if performed correctly. Now when my baby cries, it's no longer a marathon cry...we apply the layers of soothing and she is back to her happy calm self in no time, and if sleeping, she sleeps at least twice as long as before. I am forever grateful to the author.

I got the book in great condition, and I can't really review it higher because I haven't gotten through the whole book yet. It seems very helpful so far, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

At last!!!!
I was told about this book by a doctor andfinally I feel better knowing there is a name for what our child was experiencing.We thought it was odd he never cuddled and did not like to walk on certain textures, etc. As i read this book,I could picture exactly how our child would react to situations and it all clicked. Now he is getting a therapist trained in sensory development.

A Must Read for ANY parent

The best baby name book ever!
I have never felt compelled to write a review for a book on Amazon until I bought this book!I am in the process of naming my third baby.Although I already had five baby name books on my shelf, I picked this up at the bookstore and immediately wanted it.I am so glad I bought it.Not only is it a great book for naming your baby but it's extremely interesting to sit and read.This book is so much more than just a list of names, or a dictionary of name meanings.After searching countless baby name websites and my other baby name books I had come across no names I liked well enough to put on my list.After reading this book, so many names struck me as great options.I have a list so long now I don't know how to choose!Feel confident in choosing to buy this book!Good luck.

The most enlightening baby-name book I've ever read
This is the most fantastic baby-name book I've ever read. And I've read it purely for FUN. The truth is, my husband and I have our minds made up about Baby #3's name (or, at least, we've narrowed the selection down considerably), and STILL, I can't put Laura's book down. (I've also spent way too many hours perusing her archived blogs online.)

Book of hope
This book gives lots of case stories of adults with ADD.The book is long, but easy to read.There is lots of information about ADD, its diagnosis, and the newest treatments for it.But most of all, this book offers lots of hope for adults with ADD, that they can have happy and full, productive lives.

Finally, Somebody knows what they're talking about
As an adult with ADHD, I really appreciated this book's frank approach to all the sides of having ADHD. The authors have it too, which helps, because they are successful professionals. I am a professional who plans to be more successful once my doctor and I get my medication right. I have read it twice now and will continue to use the book as an invaluable resource.

Help for Borderlines who really want help
This is an amazing workbook.The first time I looked through it, I thought is was over-simplified and would not be of much use to me.But I was wrong.It teaches readers how to understand where their emotions come from, how to identify emotions that seem to come out of nowhere, and how to control how we react to those overwhelming emotions.It's indispensible for anyone who has Borderline Personality Disorder and truly wants to get better.It's also great for anyone who has difficult controling extreme emotional feelings.The workbook format makes this very easy to read.The exercises are very helpful and informative.Heck, some of them are even fun!

Great for clients
I've found this to be a very user-friendly, readable workbook.Interesting,informative and normalizing w/o unnecessary jargon or psychobabble.I'm going through it with a client who's learning what it means to be "borderline".The DBT principles are beautifully woven in.It is a great introduction to her of what a DBT group could offer her and a very helpful adjunct to our individual therapy, especially now while a DBT group is not an option for her. ... this book is not very good. if you have ever had sex this book does not tell you anything new. basically it tells you a couple positions. guy on top. girl on top. it tells you not to wear a flannel pajamas and bunny slippers to bed if you want to turn your partner on. just basic things that are nothing more than common knowledge. sorry to say im very disappointed and would not reccomend this book.

Become the sex goddess you've always wanted to be!
Or at least be bad in bed, that is to say, be a bad girl. It's all about confidence, the author states, and it is. This book helps to give us women sexual confidence we may have been lacking. It's one of the better books I've read about sex, along with "Good Sex, a woman's guide" among others.
Good book, worth buying
Its a great book for any woman who wants to be a little more outgoing where sex is concerned. Outgoing meaning uninhibited not prostitute or slut girl.It's a very liberating book.The author does not advocate protitution or a loss of self respect, but an incorporation of a healthy sex life into a healthy personality. It is not meant to change your whole persona, just your outlook on sex. For example, the author tells you to go into your underwear drawer and throw away any underwear that you wouldn't want to be caught in if by chance you had the opportunity to be intimate with a hunky movie star. She is not saying to go be with a hunky movie star but to dress in more appealing undergarments for your partner or just for yourself to feel sexy and good about yourself and to be proud of your body. It definitely does not say to go out and sleep with everyone!--not at all.

A Very Helpful Book For Singles
Ignore the negative reviews about this book. Dr. Gary Chapman has done a great job at helping single people find their love language in this book. I used it for small group bible study class & for devotional reading. It helped me connect with my christian & non christian friends, co-workers, family members, etc. in much a better way.

Not near the quality of the original
The original Five Love Languages was insightful, had a variety of examples and provided a good amount of psychological and Christian theory and application.This book is supposed to be for singles, but almost every example has to do with dating couples--people I don't really consider single.Rarely does it talk about regular friendship--and when it does, it's guy-girl friendships.I was hoping to get some insight into my same-sex friendships, family relationships and guy-girl non-romantic friendships, but this book falls horribly short of that.Get the original copy and just use a little imagination and brain-power to apply it to your single life.You'll save the time, money and frustration.

Great Guide
I really enjoy using this reference guide to parenting. It helped me learn new parenting skills.

Best Toddler Resource
This is the best toddler discipling resource i have seen. Most of the books that offer true discipline tips and advice are for older kids, and the ones for toddlers offer ways to keep from needing to use discipline, but if you're in a situation where you need to- they are no help. As a mom of a very active 2 and a half year old boy i found it priceless! It truly is like advice from an older neighbor who has been there!!!

practical tips and funny stories
This is a great resource that should be on every parents' shelf!It offers down-to-earth, sensible tips for dealing with a multitude of common parenting dilemmas, but my favorite parts are the funny stories.Being a parent is a hard job, but it's easier if we keep a sense of humor and relish the ridiculous situations that inevitably occur with kids.It's also reassuring to know that the authors have 'been there!'I highly recommend this book.

Pretty accurate.
Having been (and perhaps am still) a combination of "queen bee"/"floater", I found this book to be amazingly accurate. Though the situations are a bit overdramatic (and generalized), the book is amazingly accurate when it comes to the social behavior of girls.
Pretty Good Book
I thought that this book is a great book for parents of teens to read.It includes realistic examples of different situations that his/her daughter might be in, but some of the stadegies suggested to solve problems are not always good.I an a teen myself, and I think that some of the ideas given were just another way to embarass the teen rather than help them.the general idea of the book, though, was good.

However, I am a teen, and I feel that some of the book was a little too dramatic and harsh on teens. There are some dramatizations of situations which were somewhat unrealistic. Good information
I used this book to train my 29 month old son just over 2 weeks ago.He was fully trained within a week, including staying dry at night.Actually, he started staying dry at night (day 2) before he stopped having accidents during the daytime.He had 7 accidents on day one.I was starting to lose hope when it suddenly clicked for him.He stayed dry for the second half of day one and had about 1 accident per day until day 6 (I had a little trouble convincing him to poo-poo in the potty).
It really works!
I am so thankful for this toilet training book!As a [once] working mom, a stay-at-home mom, and as a mother of a child with a disability, I recommend this book to everyone!!We all want to potty train our child as quickly as possible and this book tells you how.I don't think there is a quicker method available.Even if you don't get the child trained in "less than a day," your child will still be toilet trained quicker by using this method than other methods.I have trained 6 children, and it took my kids an average of 2-3 days to be potty trained.What other method can do that?

I have read many books about bipolar disorder, and this is one of the best I've found.It offers strategies for coping with the diagnosis itself, depression, and mania.It talks about diagnostic criteria, biology of the disease, medications, psychotherapy, and coping in both family and work settings.The fact that there is only an 8% chance of passing bipolar to your kids (20% if you include major depression) was worth the price of the book all by itself. ... The best education in Type 2 Diabetes
When I need to learn about a topic I go to the library. My research leads me to read many books on the subject. There are usually some duds or outdated books. This book is a standout! The very best of the dozen or so books I have read on Diabetes. I learned more in this book than all the other combined. The author writes from experience and has many ideas on ways to get the best blood sugar control. The other books can stay on the shelf. This is one that I need to buy and own so I can refer back to it again and again. I recommend that anyone with Type 2 diabetes to read this book if you are serious about getting better blood sugar control! Her approach is sypathetic too. It's good to get this information from someone who knows from the inside what you are thinking and feeling. Two chapters standout in my mind. One is about burnout; you have to face diabetes everyday, it doesn't go on vacation. The other is about going to social events and having trouble finding something acceptable to eat. I would think this would be a very good book for diabetes counslors to give to their new patients when first learning of diagnosis of diabetes.
Misses the boat on Depression
I was incredibly impressed with this bookuntil I got to the bit on depression.As one of my clients said, this woman has never been depressed. There are books dating back to the 30s on how eating sugar significantly affects mood in some people. Many clients seem to be able to guess their own blood sugar ratings based on their depressed mood and lack of motivation. I was surprised that Mendosa's wonderful website doesn't list the word depression.People who have significant depression associated with variations in blood sugar are severly underserved by Becker's book. While there are many studies that claim you are at no greater risk for diabetes after a diagnosis (which is probably true) it seems to me that what actually occurs is that people are more likely to experience significant clinical depression related to diabetes BEFORE it is diagnosed.Then when blood sugar is controlled they actually have less depression. How unusual and fortunate for Becker and Mendosa that they are so blessed to be depression free. I hope it doesn't make people who do have depression associated with diabetes and variations in blood sugar feel crazy.

Intimate Issues
Once again, Linda Dillow offers her help and wisdom.She is an ispiration to all who read her books.Based on Scripture, she answers all the questions a woman, and a man, can have on sex.Specifically, she let's us know what is NOT okay and what is okay between a married couple;while remaining respectful and tactful in her presentation.I read portions of the book to my husband;he too has enjoyed listening to her insight in helping us to live a life in the light with God.

Every Women Should Read This Book
This is a fabulous book.We have just taken the last 14 weeks in our church to read it, and it has broken down so many lies that our society tells us.Every newly wed should be given this book before she gets married.

A mixed bag
This book sounded more promising than it turned out to be. Alone, it has little real value, but if used as a base for conversation (like a women's Bible study or in premarital counseling) it has real merit.

Good Book onCognitive Thinking
This book deals with Cognitive Thinking. It gives the 10 "cognitive distortions" that we do the most. It gives information on how "thoughts" become "feelings". If we can change of method of thinking, we can change the way that we feel.
If your problems are due to negative thinking alone...
...then this very upbeat book by Dr. Burns can indeed help.But I very much doubt the central thesis that thoughts control feelings and that substituting positive for negative thought patterns is the key to happiness.
Definitely worth the money and time
This book is extremely useful. It is well worth your time and money if you are feeling down or are looking for a way to cope with issues or problems in your life.

Take Care of the Child
Almost all sleep books talk about bedtime routines, sleep associations, and getting kids to fall asleep on their own, but Elizabeth Pantley does a good job of explaining why this is important.Imagine that your baby 'falls asleep rocking, nursing, sucking a pacifier' and then enters a light sleep phase and notices that everything is different from when she fell asleep.Is she likely to keep sleeping or wake up?Of course she is likely to wake up.The no-cry sleep solution will also help you to 'Change Your Baby's Sleep Associations' and 'Help Your Baby to Fall Back to Sleep on His Own' after he wakes up, whether you are breastfeeding, co-sleeping, or going back to sleep in his own crib.

Yes, it IS work - but worth it!
I love reading the critics of this book.They are looking for a gentle method of getting their child to sleep, but expect it to happen in a week or less.Parenting doesn't end at eight o'clock.And, like teaching your child to read, eat, go to the potty etc, it takes time and patience and practice and lots of reinforment.And this is coming from an exhausted mom, folks.And I know, from an sleep-deprived place in your brain, you tell yourself the crying is okay, it's not going to damage them - and it may be true.But going to your child when they're crying and holding them or nursing them tells them they can trust you, and THAT lasts.I used this book with my now 3 1/2 year old - she never slept...and this worked after a couple of months.I did let her fuss beside me in the bed as I held her, but she didn't so it alone.I so don't get that!Let a 4/5/6/7 month old baby lay there in a dark room, alone and bawl their head off until you've broke them like a horse and fall asleep.Insane.Elizabeth's book is just honest reading, makes you feel supported and not alone.If you want to help your child to sleep w/o CIO, seriously, not just as a pretty thought, but a commitment - this is the book for you. ... Very good source to keep track of the pregnancy
I found it excellent to track my medical examinations medicines etc. Before I tend to forget my appointment with Doc. NOw I am very much on time. Other parts I am yet to use :-)

This is a must have to keep track of everything while you're pregnant. I wrote in this organizer every day while I was pregnant & would recommend to anyone who is expecting.
Great to keep track of dr appts!
I'm about to order this for my second pregnancy.During my first pregnancy it was vary handy to carry back and forth to the dr appts.I would write down questions in between appts. and that helped a lot!I also used the journaling pages.Not so much as a diary, but something for my child to look back at to find out how my life was before her.I would write down world news, aches and pain, anything I had time for.

WHY MARRIAGES SUCCEED OR FAIL: AND HOW YOU CAN MAKE YOURS LAST

Not as well written as the companion book by the author
This book is very similar to "The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work : A Practical Guide from the Country's Foremost Relationship Expert".It almost seems like a first draft of the other book.Not as well organized or clearly written. It is a very good book, but I would recommend "The Seven Principles" over this one.

One of my favorites
This is one of my favorite relationship books.It really focuses on communication, and gives you real guidance on what to do, and what to watch out for, in your communication with your spouse.I asked my husband to read it after I had, and he very grudgingly accepted.Once he started reading it, however, he was quite impressed, and had many highlighters and sticky notes on his favorite parts.I highly recommend.Also, I suggest this over his "Seven Principles" book which I have also read.This seems more to be the real deal, and the "Seven Principles" more of a spin off. ... Really Great Book
If you want to know the history of your parents or grand parents on a more personal level this is a great book to have. It would be nice to have a CD included to type on the computer, because not everyone has the best hand writing

Book ?'s Too Focused on Emotional Rather Than Factual Data
I bought this book for my 62-year-old mother and my 95-year-old great-aunt to fill out so that I could keep a written document of their memories.Both separately told me the same thing - that the book asked far too personal of questions. Neither was willing to fill it out.It asked questions about their feelings about their childhood, feelings about marriage, etc.I had not wanted to record their feelings, but rather more historical type of data such as the cost of bread, the local scenery when it was all orchards, etc.If the book were full of more factually-based questions as opposed to emotionally-based, it would be more suitable.
A Beautiful Way to Preserve Memories
My grandparents are elderly.One evening my grandfather was recounting an interesting story about his father that we had never heard before - it suddenly dawned on me that there may be many more wonderful stories that we may never hear.I searched and searched for a journal or diary that they could use to preserve these memories and stumbled across this Journal.First of all it is a beautiful hard-bound book - truly a keepsake.Inside is is divided into logical sections and provides a good mix of questions as well as space for additional thoughts, pictures or memories.I really liked that it had questions that covered all parts of my grandparents lives (i.e. growing up, high school, college, military etc) - they don't have to fill out every section - but at least it gives them some guidance.I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in preserving their family history.A beautiful gift. ...
