An Excellent Start to Good Habits
This book was a great help to me as a first time/new mom. I can't begin to see how helpful it was to get the baby into a routine instead of dragging her around and keeping her out to suit my needs. Once you see how happy and rested you can be by following some simple routines it really made a difference. I would highly recommend this book.

Great Advice for New Moms!!
This book was given to me as a gift. When I first glanced through it, I really didn't think it was for me. Then one night my 4 week old son spent a good 2 hours screaming. I looked through the "What to Expect" book and a "Living through the First Year" book and finally, I picked this book up and found a chart on a baby's cries. My husband and I were able to quickly figure out that our son was backed up with good old fashioned gas! She had all sorts of advice on how to relieve him. After that I read the book cover to cover - I used the E.A.S.Y. method and things went smoothly!!! He is now 14 months and still has a great routine! He thrives and always knows what's coming at naptimes,mealtimes and bedtime. This book offers solid advice rooted in common sense. What more could a new mom need?

A must read for teens, adults and parents!
Dr. Grandin has taken her knowledge, expertise and sensitivity one step further in Developing Talents: Careers for Individuals with Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism. She offers many ideas for those affected by or those working with these individuals. This area is filled with people of talent who are underemployed. An example of one of the suggestions offered - an individual who is interested in cartoons and spends their days drawing - all day - being encouraged to go to a museum of cartooning, learning about different kinds of cartoons, the history of cartoons which expands their interest - meeting others with the same interest. It is not enough to have a talent or the intellectual ability to understand complex things. Without work, Dr. Grandin explains, her life would not have had order, content or meaning. She covers many different kinds of jobs that people on the autism spectrum can accommodate to and ones that would be more difficult for them. The book is well thought out and because Dr. Grandin is herself on the spectrum and spends so much of her time speaking to others at her many presentations she has analyzed a great deal of what works and what does not. This book is an absolute must read! I run a large group for parents, professionals and individuals and it is one of my first recommendations. This book gives concrete suggestions and hope.

As a parent of an Asperger teen, this book was confirming and enlightening
As a parent of a teenager with Aspergers, alot of Ms. Gradin's recommendations confirmed what I already thought: sell the skills not the personality, go into areas where your interests/fixations lie and consider working as a consultant in your area of expertise.Finding recommendations I already thought of didn't make me feel like those parts of the book were a waste.On the contrary, it is nice to have affirmation from an outside source, particularly one intimately knowledgable of autism.
Ways to use special interests for people with ASD/AS!
I have read all three of Temple Grandin's books. Each offers a different look at what it is like to experience Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Real life example.
My nephew is 21, a college senior, and last week his mother yelled at him because he keeps getting a certain ringtone on his cellphone.She yelled because that ringtone is reserved for the girls he no longer wants to see, but who keep calling him constantly anyway.His mom yelled because she thought he should be honest with them, but he "just couldn't be that mean." He preferred to tell them he was too busy and then just stop calling.And you know what?Very few of them take the hint.They need this book -- stat.If you keep calling, texting and emailing a guy and he never answers or is "too busy," he's not busy, or scared, or confused about his feelings - he's just not that into you.Believe me, Behrendt is onto something.When my nephew wants to date a girl, nothing stops him from seeing her.It's that simple.

Eye opening stuff
This book was very useful and eye opening. In a very honest, fun and frank way, Greg explains there are no mixed messages and that men are not complicated, but terrified to tell a woman directly "you are not the one". It is very useful so that women don't waste time making excuses for these men and move on to find the one guy who is really into them. I would also recommend reading "How to create a Magical Relationship" from Ariel and Shya Kane, which is a very simple and direct guide to have satisfying, honest, fun and magical relationships. The Kanes' approach is gentle and full of wisdom and gives a fresh take on a world that keeps wanting to divide men from women.It also really explains how to keep relationships alive and fully in-love, which is absolutely the next step after he is totally into you!!" ... Deceptive Title?
In my experience, it only took about two to three days to see real results. To be sure, other parents may have more difficult situations. This book is really valuable because it organizes and presents the information in a way that is easy to understand and implement. It addresses the fundamental issues regarding communication and helps a parent gain an appreciation of the child's need to assume their own individuality. The book is not about ensuring absolute obedience; in fact, such a goal is likely to result in defiant behavior. However, if what you ultimately hope to achieve is a solid and mostly harmonious relationship with your children, you should be well served by the advice in this book. You might not end up being able to force your teen-age daughter to wear pink polka-dot corduroy knickers with dark green taffeta tops (or force her not to wear them), but you probably will be able to get her to arrive at school on time and not scream at you when you ask how the homework is coming along. Furthermore, it is better to have a child who perceives you as an understanding ally in life than one who thinks you are another source of frustration or pain. By discussing how to avoid unconstructive behavior on your part, the book's guidance goes a long way to teaching skills that allow you to influence the important aspects ofgrowing up in a positive way. ... One of the Best Books on Labor & Delivery
I've been a working with expectant parents for the last 14 years, 5 of which as a birth doula and childbirth educator. When I meet with a new client, I always ask that they read 'The Birth Partner' along with those who are attending their birth. Childbirth is definitely an area in which knowledge equals power - in this case 'The Birth Partner' is a true powder keg to empower yourself in your childbirth journey. I feel that it is a 'must read' for every expectant family.
If you really want to be a PARTNER, this is the book to read!
I can't even count how many times I have checked this book out from the library.It's great to see that it is in it's second edition and still getting great reviews and helping so many people.I read this book from cover to cover when I was pregnant with my first child.My husband wanted to support me in my efforts to give birth naturally but wasn't sure how--and I wasn't sure what to tell him.Lamaze classes didn't really help him to understand his role.He wanted to be more than the pillow holder and breathing coach.After reading this book I was able to tell him exactly what he could do and say that would really help me.As he is not an avid reader, I read and then discussed each section with him.This definitely helped build confidence and trust for both of us.We have since been able to have 4 natural and unmedicated births, which I belive would be nearly impossible without the right kind of support from a labor partner.

Insightful, Educational, and Very Important
This book is a must read for anyone who has experienced domestic violence or cares about someone who is experiencing it.No other book does as good of a job explaining why abusers do what they do.It is key to understanding the dynamic of these people and avoiding further damage.

Made me want to leave my husband!
I can't really say that I hated this book or that I really liked it. I can say that it makes an abuser look REALLY bad and make you almost hate that person. It made me feel like my husband, even though he doesn't physically abuse me, knows what he's doing when he manipulates and frightens me. I have chosen to seek god for myself but it would be a sin to leave him. My husband is also a recovering alcoholic. Is he an abuser or an alcoholic? I don't know know, maybe he's both. Or maybe his parents were so screwed up with their own lives that my poor husband never got a chance to live a spiritual life. I do know that my husband as little to no self esteem and that is something that can be worked on I am sure. Men are delicate creatures in their emotions. Woman are much stronger, contrary to popular belief. A man will give an emotional answer to a practical question a lot. I would like a christian point of view when it comes to angry men and why they do the things they do and how to manage your family around it. I mean do I just let my husband yell at us ALL the time? The bible tells me to act one way but as a mother I feel it is my duty to stand in front of them and protect them from an emotionally abusive attack. So with that said, anyone have any suggestions? I am going to try Angry Men and the Women who love them. And see if that one is any better. I have heard it's great.

A timely and extremely valuable eye-opener. Life and sanity saving!
This book was a Godsend. It was extremely useful in helping me understand the reasoning and motivation behind my husband's abusive behavior, and it gave me clear and compelling guidance about how to deal with it from the man recognized as the leading expert in this field. I have shared it with my pastor and intend to give copies to several dear counselors and friends who mean well and love me but aren't really familiar with the issues surrounding domestic violence and abuse. This book will give a great deal of valuable insight to anyone in need or interested in supporting others in crisis (both the battered and those who batter). It's great

THE best calendar for families with more than one child
Ok, so I now have my NINETH Family Calendar hanging on the side of the fridge... I've been using them since my younger child was two... and I absolutely could not keep everyone in the family straight without it. It's even better now that my kids are old enough to know to look at their columns to find out what's up for them. I keep a mug of fine Sharpies on top of the fridge to write on it. Woe to anyone who touches Mom's pens without permission!! Love the new stickers... so cute. It's been VERY fun to keep the old ones and be able to look back at who did what when, going back to before preschool! Honestly, my only complaint is that now that the calendar is 18 months, it's much heavier and bulkier. I don't use the first six months of the calendar; I just clip the new year's under the old year until January. Kind of a waste for those of us who are repeat offenders.

If you can't get organized with this calendar, you're just hopeless
I happened upon the 2006 Mom's Family Calendar at a book sale and I'm so glad I found it because now I can't live without it.I'm looking forward to using the 2007 version.My mother purchased one for my brother because he has four busy children and he really is hopeless when it comes to organization.Unfortunately his wife had recently passsed away, so giving him a calendar with Mom pre-filled in one of the columns seemed a bit insensitive.That's my only criticism of the product though.For me it is a must have. ... This is a survival guide for parents who find themselves marooned among volatile and incomprehensible aliens on Planet Teen. Area maps cover the obvious ground--there are chapters on school, sex, suicide, and so on--but it's the title of Chapter 2, "What They Do and Why," that best captures the book's spirit and technique. Anthony Wolf's modus operandi is not so much to make pronouncements about what parents should do, as to explain adolescent behavior in a way that's bound to leave parents with a changed view of the plausible options. Wolf is a clinical psychologist, and his writing is clear--even witty--and he doesn't resort to jargon. The expository text is punctuated with snatches of illustrative dialogue, which serve as concrete examples and help parents learn how to see, anticipate, and avoid "bad strategies." (One key mistake is getting dragged into no-win conflicts instead of having the wisdom to shut up at the moment when shutting up would be most effective--albeit the least satisfying--thing to do.) There are also some nicely tongue-in-cheek samples of "ideal" communication--the stuff we imagine might get said if only we were better parents. After one such rosily cooperative and considerate interchange between a father and his adolescent son, Wolf offers the following two-edged comfort: "The above conversation has never happened. Never. An absolute read
As a parent of a 15 year old son and an 11 year daughter, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It sat on my night stand for sometime, but once I opened the book, I couldn't put it down. It helped me to realize the differences and the similarities in remembering my teenage years and now being in the parental role, that life can be hard... some things have changed greatly while a lot of things are still the same. It is a very straight forward book.

Must read
Having two teenagers, one of each sex, I found this book extremely insightful.It explains why they act the way they do, and tells how to "handle" these turbulent times.A MUST READ for all who are rasing or about to raise a teenager.

Important Info
Any parent of a teenager should read this book.It is not your usual self-help manual.The author presents a truly different and effective way of perceiving erradic teenage behavior and in so doing offers a whole new world of possible and appropriate parental responses to that behavior that will reduce the stress and anxiety for both parents and their teenage children.If you want to survive adolescence with your sanity intact, read this book. ... Years of success with this book
I've used this book as a reference for many new parents to assist them for over 20 years, my own daughter is a result of using this book and I can't say enough about the benefits of this book, Vimala is terrific for having researched abd written the fantastic book.

Nice for a book, but I'd rather look at a video.(I'm very visual.)
This book is nice, but for the same price you can buy a DVD on the subject.I like Aimee Ketchum's DVD because not only does she do a great job of demonstrating baby massage, but she also gives lots of information on how your baby develops.Her massage method lasts only 4-5 minutes per session. I really don't have the time to spend an hour giving my baby a massage.There is so much more information on her DVD about your baby and how simple exercises can help your baby's brain development and lots and lots of other stuff.I just don't see why you'd want to buy a book with only massage pictures in it when you can buy a DVD with not only lots of massage info, but also has tons and tons of other simple stuff you can do with your baby. It makes so much sense and you don't need to buy anything else. Plus Aimee has a nice personality and you can tell she really cares. She's very qualified and is a pediatric OT plus certified massage therapist for babies, like Gweneth Paltro hires to massage her baby. ... Read more

All Covey is saying in his longwinded book, basically, is this: Listen to the people you love. Put the family first in all your decisions. Blah blah blah and something about synergy.

Truthfully, just another set of excuses for poor instructional techniques!
Using MRI and neuroscience to try to answer questions about dyslexia as Sally Md Shaywitz has tried to do is dangerously short sighted and terribly misguided.Especially when you consider that her conclusions about remediation reflect what is so deeply wrong with education today.Trying to cram human brain function and the human spirit into the confines of modern educationis akin to stuffing an elephant into a thimble. Imagine if one were so dimwitted as to blame the elephant for the obvious lack of success.This is precisely what is happening today in public education.If one were able to step back from the tree and catch a glimpse of the forest, one might see that ego drives professionals to draw conclusions about student performance that reflect the stupidity of arrogance.More and more students are being labeled learning disabled and dyslexic, more medication is being doled out and more and more remediations are being invented to control and force students into a useless development that does much more to impede brain function than to enhance it.In fact, students are being driven into intellectual comas and instead of rethinking methods and curriculum, teachers blame students and their families for their own professional shortcomings. Uniforms, drill and kill, direct instruction amongst other inhumane and unintelligent strategies are exactly what has gotten us to this desperate point.In one more generation, Sally Md Shaywitz will be able to prove that 2 in 5 students have dyslexia and her confidence in modern science will soar to new heights.Teachers everywhere will be able to rejoice that their own drastic failings are not their fault at all, but that of the flawed human condition.
Well meaning, but flawed and scary presentation of dyslexia
Some of the book was very interesting, especially the chapter on the functional MRI findings.I appreciate her writing the book to share her experiences, and think she truly wants to help. However, I admit I have grave doubts about her premise, because it is inherently contradictory.She repeats throughout the book that anyone who is dyslexic will always remain so, and yet is simultaneously convinced that the kind of intervention she recommends is uniformly effective. In addition, the graph on which she bases her claim about the absolute persistence of dyslexia does not justify her conclusions. The book names various intervention programs, but doesn't compare and contrast them. It is hard to tease out specific recommendations about what to do.She mentions that people vary in their reading stumbling blocks, but prescribes the same programs for all.She states that anyone using programs like Open Court should succeed, but thousands of California children still have trouble reading.Though she means the book to be empowering, I think it scares parents instead.

NOT Manipulative
I'm a recently divorced 50-something-year-old woman. I only vaguely remember what dating is all about/like, and felt I needed a 'brush-up course' before tackling the now (increasingly frightening) dating world. I chose "Men are Like Fish..." because it was a cute title, and I was intrigued by the fact that it is written from a MAN's perspective. Being manipulative, coy, or false in any way does not figure in to Mr. Nakamura's advice. This refreshingly honest book advises leading with your brain, but following with your heart - advice that I have given my daughter - but had forgotten for myself. I'm sending this book to my daughter ASAP, as it's really about being happy and sharing that appropriately and safely with interesting men.

If someone is giving you the keys to the kingdom, why would you refuse?
I loved this book and Mr. Nakamoto is really giving us women the keys to the kingdom.Men Are Like Fish should not be overlooked.It is filled with many "cheat sheets" that you can use to quickly check the pulse of your current relationship (or of the current man in your life).If, after having compared the relationship to Mr. N's key points, you still think your man is worth spending more time with, then you can give a little slack on the line but you'd probably want to check back in a week or two to check the temperature of the waters.If the waters haven't changed, then you have your answer and you should jump ship as fast as you can or you're headed for the falls.I see no problem with having this book around, it can also be used to measure your other relationships.Many of the items on his lists, you may already know in your heart; but, wouldn't it help to have it handy to remind you what's really important to consider when you want the relationship to last a long time?If you can put up with the constant references and metaphors to fishing, this book is very easy to read.(I can't seem to get into the other guy's book, He's Just Not Into You.)Buy Men Are Like Fish, you won't regret it.It's worth the tiny investment.It's your happiness that's at stake here after all.

This is the worst book on the subject that I have read.It is not written well - or even easy to read for that matter and with advice like have good skin, have a pleasant voice and don't have an opinion that is contradictory to your date's, Nakamoto's book is shallow and unhelpful. Great Book
This book makes you realize things that are obvious but women don't see.I loved this book and recommended it to my girlfriends.The great part is that it changed me and the way I think when it comes to men.Loved it.

Great Book
This is a great book for women who have just broken up with someone or who are having a hard time meeting decent men. It's also a great book for women who are doormats when they meet and date men...they give him too much too soon, before he even earned it. I would recommend it only for these women (when I read the book years ago, I was in a relationship where I was definately a doormat, and it really helped me raise my self-esteem and change the relationship for the better). This book will help make unhealthy relationships healthier.
Some good advice, but goes a little too far
I think the main premise of this book is wonderful: a woman should not make her whole life about the man she is dating.It also gives helpful insight into why a man doesn't appreciate a woman who gives him everything.However, to go as far as the author advises would push many men away.After a period of time, a relationship should be a 50-50 partnership, and the author doesn't recognize this.What woman wants to play these "hard-to-get" games for the rest of her life?I don't! ... Great book for parents
My thoughts: Its well written-not verbose at all, each chapter is to the point with great suggestions. His points are based recent on scientific studies and are not from glossed over like many writers do who don't fully comprehend the research. the "mozart effect" is a perfect example. He tells you the limits of what the research shows, eg Dont plunck the kid in front of the stereo all day because thats not going to do much.
Valuable Information for Parents
Raise a Smarter Child by Kindergarten is perhaps the most comprehensive book I've ever seen relating to enhancing our children's intelligence and paving the way for their future success. Dr. Perlmutter, a neurologist, not only provides the activities, lifestyle recommendations anf nutritional information to build a better brain, but he goes so far as to claim that as many as 30 IQ points are up for grabs and provides the hard core science to back it up. He shows us not only how to treat ADHD without medication, but more importantly, how we can easily prevent it in the first place. His unique schedule for immunizations is especially helpful. This is very important read for all parents and future parents.

A book that promotes creavitiy and skills development early in life
"Raise a Smarter Child by Kindergarten: Build a Better Brain and Increase IQ by up to 30 points" by David Md Perlmutter is a pretty good book which promotes creativity, skills development, and it reinforces common knowledge directed towards improving a child's mental skills prior to the elementary school years. Perlmutter provides readers with a list of tools that they can use specifically towards these purposes and advises against common pitfalls, such as excessive television viewing and video game playing. Four Stars, Not Five--Here's Why:
I'm a Hodgkin's patient who's almost finished reading this book. I found it to be an easy, quick read that felt good since it validated everything I feel about illness and life in general already. My guess is most of the reviewers who gave this book five stars are the same.
Dr. Siegel helped my spouse to live two years, three months rather than six months to a year
My spouse, Lynne Behar Eagen, upon initial diagnosis in November 1993, had stage four colon cancer.The prognosis was six months to a year. However, in part, Dr. Siegel's book helped her change her worldview, her way of seeing the world and responding to the world, which assisted her in living longer than was anticipated. My loving lady Lynne died February 26, 1996.
Inspirational
I originally bought this for a friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer. After flipping through it I had to buy two more copies, one for another friend and one for myself. Even if you don't have cancer, a disease or an infection I think you will find lots of inspiration and a lot of practical advice in this book. This book is an easy read. There are a lot of amazing true stories sprinkled throughout the chapters. I've always believed in miracles being possible when our mind/body communication is opened up.
