My wife and I receieved this book as a gift when we announced her pregnancy.It is by far our favorite pregnancy book.The week-by-week format is perfect for following along with your progress and also makes it nice to read together.There are even helpful hints for dads along the way.

When I was pregnant my first time, I carried this around everywhere!I was hungry for knowledge and this seemed to be the only book that I could refer to more frequently than just the month-to-month!I had wished that there was a day-to-day book, but this came very close to providing me with new information as frequently as possible.It is a staple of the pregnancy book diet!

I absolutely LOVE this book.I grabbed a pile of books at the bookstore and looked through each one carefully before selecting this one.It is the only best-selling guide written by a doctor with millions of copies sold.And I know why now that I own it!!I don't see the negative like some readers do.It is written by a doctor, so it provides a lot of info that you'd get by talking with your doctor every day!So there are things that you should know about even if you don't want to hear it or don't think it will happen to you!It explains things such as bleeding during pregnancy, some common medications to avoid to prevent birth defects, pollutants to avoid and why, STDS during pregnancy, nutrition and sources/serving sizes, how your actions affect your baby's development (vaccinations, smoking, xray, falling, safety, etc.), possible tests, required tests, lying on your back, rh-sensitivity, douching, sex, backaches, exercise guidelines, air travel, car safety, breastfeeding, pregnancy discomforts (hemmorhoids, constipation, backaches, foot swelling, dizziness, breast itching, cramping, contractions), infections, hot tubs, jaundice...It really is like having a doctor's advice for each week of your pregnancy.It relieved alot of the worrying about symptoms I was experiencing, realizing that I was "normal".

REQUIRED READING!!
I just finished this book and must say it has had a profound effect on the way I look at health, nutrition and the information we are spoonfed on a daily basis.I will never again eat dairy and will always question where the latest and greatest research findings came from and who funded them!This book should be required reading for every single American person today!Why the information in this book is not front page news speaks volumes about the influence agricultural lobby groups have on government, science and the media.

I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. Ever since I read Martin Gardiner's book on multiple intelligences, I have been intrigued by the study of how we learn and the different types of intelligence. No one disputes that mathematical/analytical brain-power is a very different type of intelligence from the kind of bodily intelligence that makes someone a graceful gymnast or a super athlete; while there is often some cross-over between the kinds of intelligence that make for good mathematicians and good musicians, the kinds of intelligence that are brought to bear on different parts of our lives get developed in different ways.

I placed my original order for Dan Goleman's book "Emotional Intelligence" about one month before it's release in 1995 after reading the Time magazine cover story "What is Your E.Q.?"At the time I was going through a very difficult divorce, and I was asking myself the question "What did I do to deserve this terrible mess?"I was a 37 year old medical internist then who, in 7th grade, modeled my emotional style after Mr. Spock (from Star Trek) to avoid emotional issues I faced then.I accepted the messages from my parents and teachers who taught me that if I earned good grades, went to college, received an undergraduate and hopefully a graduate degree, then I shall expect to become happy & successful in life.Well, I DID that. Some Instructions Inadequate
I purchased this book as my figure has changed and I needed to re-do my basic slopers.The pattern design books I currently have did not cover trousers so I was delighted to finda new book that was apparently so comprehensive.
Finally !Best value for my dollar
I received this book yesterday and read the first 100 pages.I've sewn all my life and consider myself an advanced seamstress.I've sewn and made my own patterns for childrens' heirloom, business suits, and now enjoy making (jazz) dance costumes.I'm the one in line at the fabric store buying ten patterns, just to combine different details and features in different sizes, especially if sewing for a group.I probably own hundreds of patterns and almost that many books.For me, this book will pay for itself many times over.It isn't a sewing "how to" book and it wouldn't be the first book for a beginner.The reader should be familiar or use other reference books for actual garment construction techniques.I've bought other, less expensive sewing books to learn pattern manipulation and fitting techniques.I put off the purchase of this book, being put off by its price.But, finally!This book is so inspiring and liberating. In just the first 100 pages, I've gotten through the basic patternmaking and dart manipulation.I think I may never have to buy another pattern again !This is definitely a must have for the serious sewing enthusiast.

This book was used during a 12 week class I attended for Patternmaking.It is very thorough and is an excellent reference for just about any type of pattern one could desire to make.I learned a great deal using the book as a reference guide while I studied the various fundamental components to patternmaking.However, it can be a little intimidating if used as a self-study text.This issue could have been solved if there had been an answer section for the various exercises that accompanied each chapter.Many of the students in our class felt it was a text designed for those enrolled in a formal college level class, i.e., it oftened assumed reader knowledge beyond that expected of a lay person. (Everyone in our class was required to be at the advanced level of sewing experience.)Some of the exercises were made more difficult because the technique to design a sample pattern was in a later chapter, not having been covered in the one just studied.Overall,though,it is a good reference and certainly belongs in the personal library of any serious home sewer. ... Interracial relationship data in book is biased
I study close relationships of all kinds regardless of race. I have noticed something troubling about books such as yours. I have noticed many texts are off base or one sided when discussing heterogamous or "interracial" relationships involving black men. Rather than present a balanced picture of heterogamous relationships within the black community, the authors of this text deliberately took a stance which casts a negative shadow on black men in heterogamous relationships even going so far as to quote an article in a popular magazine as a source. This is a text book. There's no room for unsupported opinions from popular media. All arguments should be fairly presented and documented with a diversity of academic sources because you're influencing the minds of students who are relying upon your "expertise."

Couldn't have done it without it!
I would recommend this to any nursing mother. I bought the book and had it memorized by the time my daughter came into this world. I had a lot of questions, and it always had the answers. I never had to go digging around for another book because it didn't have what was looking for.
The BEST Nursing Book Out There!!
I received this book as a gift and it has been beside my bed for 6 months (ever since my daughter was born).It is great as a reference to look up answers to quick questions or concerns.I would also recommend reading this book from start to finish before baby arrives... Actual useful advice!
This book was by far the most useful nursing book I read (the others were the Sears book, the LLL book, and BF made simple).When I had a specific problem, this book actually gave a list of different things to do to try to resolve the problem - exactly what I wanted!-and there's always an accompanying discussion if you want know more.I would say this book is also the most clinical of the books, and I consider that a good thing.I (and I think most people who bother to buy a nursing book) know BF is a good choice before buying these books.I don't need a hard sell.This book simply lays out the facts in an easy to understand way.Highly recommended. ... Should be Mandatory Reading
I feel this book should be on the "mandatory reading" list for all women - especially young women.Our society and most of our mothers have wholly failed at teaching us about this sacred subject! Whether you are trying to get pregnant, trying to prevent pregnancy, or neither of the above, this is a must read.I would add, that there is a lot of information in this book that men should know too.

Read this and got pregnant the first month!
I had no trouble conceiving my first child when I was 35 years old. When we tried for baby #2, however, I was 39 years old and after 6 months of fruitless efforts we were beginning to get frustrated. A friend recommended this book to me. I got the book and began charting my cycle using the methods in the book. BINGO! I got pregnant the very first month I charted. What I learned in the process, was that I was ovulating a full week later than normal, so while my husband and I were diligently trying to conceive in the early part of my cycle, up through the time I thought I would be ovulating, we were stopping our determined efforts a little too early. The month I started charting, we just kept on going (much to my husband's delight: )until the thermometer said we could stop. A couple of weeks later I discovered I was pregnant and now our daughter has a little brother!: )

Strategies for dealing with the opposite sex
This book not only explains the differences between men and women but also gives strategies to each sex for dealing with those differences. For example men and women have different values. Men tend to value competence and accomplishments while women tend to value relationships. Women tend to express their caring by offering unsolicited advice that is often causes men to feel incompetent. Women need to express how they feel about their problems, while men interpret this as blaming them for their problems. Men often need time alone to solve their problems while women interpret this as not caring. If everyone practiced the methods in this book the sexes would get along much better. The book, however, is at times dry reading.

Every diabetic should own a copy

a must read........
this book is chock full of information on the realities of dealing with alzheimer's disease and other memory impairment disorders.it is clearly written and uses examples of real-time situations to highlight situations that can arise and suggestions on how to deal with them.highly recommend it for care providers and others in the lives of those with memory impairment disorders.required reading for adult children to gain an appreciation for the pressures on the care provider(s) for a parent.

The 36 Hour Day
This is a really good book. I kept borrowing it from the library and kept getting fined for having it too long, so I thought I'd save myself time and trouble (and money, too) and buy it. I've come across alot of the same things that are mentioned in the book. This book is helpful to give the caregiver a different perspective on AD and it's nice to know that you're not alone in your struggles. It also reminds you that others have it worse than you do. I recommend this book for anyone who has elderly relatives, with the increased incidence of AD the chances are pretty good/bad that a relative will suffer from it. I think it's best to be prepared for the worst before it gets here. That way you'd have a start on what care would be required and how much you'll have to change your life to accomadate your aging relatives.

5 minutes to orgasm
I bought this book hoping to learn more about how to make sure that my wonderful wife will be very satisfied every time. Claire Hutchins definitely has strong and well supported position about women's sexuality and certain associated issues. I agree with her that it is not necessary for men to be fully responsible for the sexual satisfaction of their partners (any more). Intimacy should be fun, pleasant and an opportunity to get rid of stress and tension not the opposite. I am thankful to the author for encouraging and empowering my wife to feel more in charge of her orgasms than she used to. Similar thing happened with me after I easily became multi-orgasmic thanks to scientificlly guaranteed male multiple orgasms and ultimate sex. You can hardly imagine what burden will fall from your shoulders when you learn from such books how to have orgasms at will and can finally focus on the rest- foreplay, different positions, and truly lovemaking that makes the bond between the partners stronger and deeper. Crazy
I am going to be very opinionated here, but just to make the point to you of what it is like.I could not stand this book.I thought the ideas were LOONEY!They recomend that when you child has a tantrum, you join them to help them understand that you understand, even in front of others.Ha!No thanks.I do love my kids, but I also would like them to learn what is correct behavior in front of others.They do have to grow up eventually!

Disappointed
Having really enjoyed Happiest Baby on the Block, I thought this book would be helpful too. I was so turned off by it, I couldn't even finish reading. Dr. Karp is pushing evolution in explaining why toddlers behave the way the do. I just couldn't take it anymore.

Read the book before you review it
To those who think this book recommends ignorning a hungry child just because he ate 2 hours ago rather than the prescribed 3, I suggest you read the book a little more carefully. The feeding schedule is just a guideline, and the book does emphasize (in several places) that when your child is hungry, food should never be denied, hunger cues should never be ignored. Parents: read the book, then make up your mind on whether or not this technique is one you want to adopt. If you haven't read the book, keep your opinions to yourself. No one cares to know what you learned after doing a google search on the author. If the information in the book makes sense to you, and your pediatrician doesn't disagree, does it really matter in what subject the author earned his master's degree?

Don't knock it until you've READ it.
This book is about setting boundaries for your child at a young age.I read the book in one sitting because it was fascinating and the next night after following the advice, my son slept for 9 hours (he was 4 months old).He hasconsitently been a very well behaved, happy, and well adjusted child.A routine, established boundaries, and yes... even discipline gives your child confidence (mommy actually knows what's up!!).I've met moms who thought babywise was "terrible" and "cruel", but interstingly enough not a single one of them had actually read the book... and guess what??The same babies that decided their own schedules turned into toddlers and children that ran the household.If you don't teach your kids the rules and boundaries, they will learn them the hard way; by testing you....
Wonderful Book!
I love this book!My children are 17 months apart and I used Baby Wise for both of them.They were and are very happy confident children.They were not clingy because the schedule was consistent and they new what to expect.I was better at knowing their needs because of the schedule.I have always received compliments on their behavior and they are now Child Wise.:)I highly recommend this book!! ... Well worth the money!
I bought this book when expecting my first.It took what was completely overwhelming and helped me sort through what I HAD to have, could use but not necessary and was a waste of money.I loved that it incorporates feedback from parents as well as the expert ratings and such.
The best book you can buy when pregnant!
I don't know what I would have done without this book.It completely made the overwhelming task of registering so much easier.It tells you all about every baby product you can imagine and rates it with an A, B, C, etc.It breaks out products by type and then by brand.It is absolutely a must have and I recommend it to anyone expecting their first child.

Great information...
This book has great information about all types of minerals and vitamins.I had a hard time putting the book down.I learned so much more about the minerals and vitamins and what doses you should be using.Now I know how much my body needs of certain vitamins.

Careful - this book isn't as neutral as the author claims it to be
If you read this book you will be given lots of evidence and independent studies on the various benefits of vitamins and minerals.But while this book claims to be neutral and balanced on the good and bad of each vitamin, the author does leave out a variety of studies that have cast doubt on the benefits of "mega-doses" of various vitamins and minerals.
