5-0 out of 5 stars Adventures of a stay-at-home home dad - for moms too!
This book is absolutely hilarious! It is warm, funny, smart, and should be read by dads AND moms alike. Ladies, don't let the title sway you from picking this up.5-0 out of 5 stars REQUIRED READING FOR PARENTS
This very funny take on fatherhood by Mr. Eddy should have a place of honour on every new parent's bookshelf-right alongside whichever overly earnest new authority is the current guru on childrearing.Dead-on in its insights into parenting and family life,it's the perfect antidote to the notion that marriage and babies is the end to life as we know it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Punk to Pa book a riot
Housebroken is a book about parenting for people who arent interested in books about parenting. Finally, a witty, playful AND philosophical take on the biggest decision of your life, by one of the funniest authors of our day. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Join Margaret's Fight Club!
Sometimes, even if you are a comedienne, you have to get angry, get it all out of your system and say exactly what is on your mind...even if its not the usual comedy in your stand up act.Margaret Cho has done that---something we all need to do considering the political climate we have lived under since the hijacking of the White House by Dubya and his cronies.Once Bush # 2 leaves office, this country will be in a horrible state (actually its already in a horrible state!) and all Margaret is doing is reacting to the devastation created not only by Bush but by the conservative religious right that he so vigorously caters to.
1-0 out of 5 stars It Just Isn't Funny
Well, I have long been a fan of Margaret Cho. For me, she is the alpha AND the beta of modern comediennes. I remember her great stand-up routine in...wait, give me a minute, I'll think of it. It was...geez, what the heck was she good in? Or am I thinking of Eddie Izzard?
2-0 out of 5 stars She's much better at standup
She's wonderful as a standup, but in this book, it's just doesn't work. The 'anger' that works so well on stage is somehow a complete turn off in this book. And for all her railing against Whites whites whites and especially white males, painting huge and nasty stereotypical portraits of them, one comes away wondering-- hey, Margaret, who exactly is the racist here? ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes laugh out loud funny, sometimes tedious and maudlin
This book on tape, read by Al Roker himself is a mixed bag. There are laugh out loud moments and sweet moments, but generally speaking the book has too many filler moments, WAY too much information about his second wife's attempts to get pregnant and sometimes is sickeningly sentimental. The last half of the book saves the first half from being a total disaster.

5-0 out of 5 stars a favorite
By now, I've probably read this book three or four times.Although the beginning was a bit boring, a couple of chapters in I got really into it.All of it was told with a bit of a funny tint. You can tell he loves his kids through it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Al Roker is a sweet man
I expected something really funny and light.Instead, I learned WAY too much about the birth of one of Al Roker's children.I walked away thinking that I had learned a lot more about what a wonderful person Al Roker is......but the title led me to believe that I would have something funny to listen to over and over again. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A series worth every funny moment
If you think you're the only person whose dad said "Not under this roof, you're not" or "You're not going out in THAT!" then this series is going to broaden your horizons! Hilarious and pitch-perfect, it captures fathers' "wisdom" (if you can call it that) in true form. As a father myself, I cringe to realize I actually have said about half this stuff! Hamilton has created a marvelous little entertainment that perfect for families where dad has often put into words the kind of man he really is! Buy it for the dad in your life, and read it together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! I thought only my dad said these things...
With father's Day just around the corner, I have been keeping an eye out for something for my pop.I found the funniest book called, "Dad-isms."It was great reading through it and hearing all the things that used to come out of my own dad's mouth. The book tells you of a phrase you may have heard from your own, but what he really meant by the statement. One of my favorites was a phrase that went something like, "turn that racket down in there."But what he really meant was, "turn down your music, I can't hear the TV."And what about this warning, "Don't you ever let me catch you doing that again!" That simply meant, "you can do it, I just don't want to find out about it."It's hilarious. ... Read more

My entire family enjoys reading Bill's columns, when we are together, someone will always read the newspaper aloud. The stories are so funny, and the same craziness that goes on in EVERYONE'S family.I purchased this book, used, as a gift for my Dad, but of course I had to read it FIRST.Hysterical (I actually read excerpts aloud to my Mom on the telephone) Thanks Bill, your outlook on life is SO appreciated!

5-0 out of 5 stars Soul restoring reading for any stressed out parent
In I'm Counting To 10...: Hope And Humor For Frazzled Parents, Jahnna Beecham and Malcolm Hillgartner effectively collaborate to present forty-five stories chronicling a year in the life of a slightly eccentric couple and their two children. Told in the voice of Jahnna, the mom, the stories ring as true as they are laced throughout with recognizable humor. I'm Counting To 10... is very highly recommended reading and soul restoring reading for any stressed out parent who has ever had their kid erupt with embarrassing behavior in church, at a restaurant, on a plane, in front of grandparents, friends, or strangers passing by. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Witty and charming!
I found this book to be very charming. The author shines when describing the physical angst of midlife. Her humor is gentle and a bit sappy, but very heartfelt. The essay style was a bit inconsistent at times, but still, an easy read.I was disappointed at the overall Christian tone of this book, which I did not expect nor want, and felt it was kind of preachy.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hey girlfriend, let's talk!
It's all about knowing you're not the only one! Thanks for this chatty, funny book about the change -- it's all attitude, all the time.Doesn't tell how to replace the hormones, just how to deal with not having them -- but there are other "replacement" books.Caron is a blessing, no matter what your religion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pops Will Salute Sons Who Give This Book
This swift gift book is cute, and is filled with pictures of our favorite stooges with fun taglines. Constructed to be a Father's Day gift from a son to a dad, it will bring a few chuckles and smiles. Many of the pictures are in standard Stooge calenders. The writing is not particularly funny for anyone over 12. Fans of the Stooge shorts will recognize where the captured frames were first shown.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift for Dad.
POP, YOU'RE POIFECT is a great gift to give to a dad. Most men love watching The Three Stooges, especially fathers. The book is like a giant card filled with photos of the stooges in some of their most hilarious moments. This is a wonderful, inexpensive gift for any father. It's also a nice present for any Three Stooges fan.

Editorial Review

Just 26 weeks into her first pregnancy, Ann Leary's water broke--an event she sardonically refers to as "the PROM" (doctor-speak for "premature rupture of membranes). Unfortunately for her, the "PROM" took place while she was strolling along Oxford Street during a weekend trip to London, where her (then-unknown) husband Denis Leary was booked to perform a BBC comedy show. Forbidden to return home and placed on total bed rest, Ann gets "knackered" from the medications pumped into her body to prevent premature labor. In some of the book's funniest passages, she makes great efforts to prevent her many hospital roommates from discovering she's American, lest they suspect she's freeloading off the National Health Service. (Don't let the bad pun of the book's title put you off; Ann's sense of humor is often as biting and gritty as her husband's).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Moms of Preemies Must Read
This book was excellent. Very funny and touching. Ann Leary captures the dread and fear of not only having a preemie but the fear of loving a preemie whole heartedly because of the uncertainty of the outcome. I liked that she included the lingering effects of being a mom of a preemie both in terms of the worry that something will happen to the child and the realization of just how precious this child really is; something moms of plump, healthy, sleep-through-the-night-at-six-weeks (and remember to breathe)babies may not appreciate to the same extent. I would recommend this book to any mom who has had a premature baby.
4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and real
I really enjoyed this book. Ann Leary has an engaging and enjoyable writing style and a great sense of humor. Her story, about her premature son Jack, was touching and heartfelt without straying into maudlin. I read it in one sitting, in a few hours, and can honestly say it was worth staying up until 1:00 am to finish it, even though I'm now grouchy at work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and true
Ann Leary's autobiographical account of her sons birth abroad, amidst the rise of her husbands comedy career, is well-written, interesting, and very truthful. Unlike some autobiographical stories, Ann doesn't attempt to present herself as some sort of hero, and she doesn't portray anything that happened to her in a way that is self-serving. She tells it like it is. And it is a very interesting story. From her son's surprise appearance, to her unexpected life abroad, Anne's story is intriguing, sometimes sad, funny, and sometimes happy. I would expect that anyone who's ever had a premie, or anyone who's lived abroad, would especially enjoy her story, but to the rest of us, it's still a good read. ... Read more

and not edgewise. With the same neurotic quirkiness of the poems in his first volume, these poems delight with the difference manifested in the father-son relationship. Despite the brevity, Sirowitz manages to capture those funny, annoying, sad moments in tiny memories of intimate verbal exchanges. It is as if wehad a chair, listening in the next room.

5-0 out of 5 stars An anthology of his one-page free-verse poems
Award-winning poet Hal Sirowitz presents Father Said, an anthology of his one-page free-verse poems, written in an almost conversational style, that distill the connection between father and son into bits of wisdom, large and small, that strengthen a lifelong bond. A compelling and eminently readable compendium of ageless wisdom, wry insight, and catch-one's-eye phrases make Father Said a superb giftbook even for individuals who may be unaccustomed to reading poetry - the words speak with a plain-terms, everyman spirit that one does not need years of literary education to wholeheartedly appreciate. Highly recommended. Mother of Invention: They say necessity is the mother / of invention, Father said, but you / don't feel the necessity of inventing / an excuse for why you don't visit us anymore. / Your sister, who has given less than you, doesn't / visit us much either but at least she invents a new excuse / every week that she's unable to come.
5-0 out of 5 stars gems to be savored
Hal Sirowitz, the former Poet Laureate of Queens (who now lives in another boro), offers us this funny look at his father's sayings and life philosophy. It is a follow up to "Mother Said" and "My Therapist Said."Just as Sedaris is better read with aCarolina accent, these are better read with a dry, montone, slightly whiny Queens accent.

4-0 out of 5 stars ITS FUNNY!
As the other reviewer said, it is a complete joke, BUT ITS HELLA FUNNY! I am a person who reads nonsense anyway and why would you buy a book titled "How to cope when youre surrounded by idiots or if you are one" if you didnt expect it to be a bunch of bull? Anywho, my point is that this book is extremely funny although it is pointless. I truthfully loved the book. If you have a lot of time on your hands and don't mind reading useless information, then it is the perfect book for ya.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not What You Think
When I first read the description of this book, it sounded interesting to a cynic like myself.I was expecting a witty but generally serious book with a real point, and this wasn't.It was mainly just a joke, and not avery good one at that. ... Read more
