Editorial Review

This book caused quite a ruckus when it was released 25 years ago because it directly quotes the sexual fantasies of dozens of women, ranging from the "very common" rape fantasy to lesbian affairs to unusually explicit scenarios that are unmentionable here. 4-0 out of 5 stars Celebration of Woman's Fantasies
Friday intended for My Secret Garden to be a candid celebration of woman's fantasies.A ground breaker. As with any book that dwells on such subjects some will think it is just a soft porn book. Friday tries hard to give the book a serious edge and to show it for what it is a book that attempts to free a woman's mind and her conscience.Friday looks at a wide range of subjects in the book. Believe it or not it isn't 307 pages of woman telling the world they to put it crudely want a good seeing to by a well endowed man. The fantastisies are written in the woman's own words so the style and language used does differ from page to page.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Secret Garden by Nancy Friday
I am online to purchase more of this amazing woman's work.I found her open mind to the hidden world of women's fantasies refreshing. She also opened my mind to how thoughtless I have been as a lover. It is a great book to travel with, the person sitting next to you will either "not bother you, due to the subject" or "start an interesting conversation, because of it".I am ready for the next adventure, thank you Nancy Friday.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will Steam Glasses
Nancy Friday asked women around the world, to send in their sexual fantasies and experiences. What she got even shocked her. Some of, if not THE most provocative fantasies and experiences ever published. I have owned(notice I said "have owned") a couple of copies of this extraordinary book. But each time I bought one, someone would want to "see it", and I would never get it back. Like Forbidden Flowers (a similar publication by Nancy Friday), anytime someone seen me reading a copy, they'd want to read a page. Only thing is, I never had anyone who could only read one page. They would be so captivated by its contents, they'd read more and more. I've had as many as 5 women at a time, come up to me and inquire as to what I was reading, then ask to let them "read a page". As they read, mouths dropped open, eyes would widen, faces would turn flush, and giggles galore would occur. It's amazing how a book can make women in their 20's 30's 40's and 50's act.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book; a must read!!
i thoroughly enjoyed this book!it's my first James Dobson (although I've heard his Focus on the Family broadcast quite a bit) and i thought it was excellent.as the mother of a two year old, i find myself concerned for is well-being and adjustment in a world that seems to have lost its belief in God.this book has provided me with new interpretations to raising boys that i don't get in many of my university psychology classes.as a psychology major, i found this book twice as gratifying due to its presentation of several researchventures.so not only does he have something to say, he has the facts to back it up.not to mention he's BRAVE enough to say it!!in the chapter on homosexuality, he presents a new concept to gay men that i had never heard in any of my psychology classes!no professors like to talk about it as an alternative to genetic make-up, even though there has been ZERO conclusions that homosexuality is genetic.it's interesting to hear a different perspective that makes just as much sense as the current, more popular one, that of genetics rather than environment.thank you, Dr. Dobson, for telling it how you see it, not just how people want to hear!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for parents with boys of any age!
This is an excellent book for parents who have boys...any age, 1 or more! I plan to read it every couple of years as my boys get into new "phases" of their lives!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing Up Boys
This is an excellent book that parents will find essential in helping to rear boys in today's world. The scientific evidence presented that differentiates boys from girls helps substantiate why boys act differently than girls. It shows that this difference is a strength and should be encouraged and celebrated, not minimized.I highly recommend that it be made a part of your library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Memories
Loved this book!!Had to keep the kleenex nearby.Every story different but the common theme is how fathers shape the lives of their daughters. It brought back so many memroies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Amazing Book. Not only for daughters and fathers, this book is for anyone.Emotional and intriguing. You wont want to put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotions and glimpses
Karyn Frist has compiled a diverse group of women to open their hearts about their dads.Wow!! My favorite is Mary Higgins Clark who closes her story with her visit to Ireland to discover the barn where her dad (who died when she was 11) was raised, running her fingers over her dad's carved names in the old oak barn door.Have some tissues nearby when you read the many captivating, emotional memories!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life
Through this very easy to understand book, I found out what I was doing wrong in life and have fixed it. I cannot say enough good things about this book and the discussion forum that goes with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life changing
I purchased this book a few years back.At the time, I wanted to blame everyone else for my shortcomings.Recently I have read to book twice.Every man should have this book. This book is only good if you approach it with an open mind.Meaning if you are in denial about being a nice guy, this book or any other book wont help you. After years of being a nice guy and being disappointed, I am enjoying life alot more.

5-0 out of 5 stars This small book packs a LOT of punch!
I have been struggling with social anxiety and the "Nice Guy Syndrome" for a VERY long time. Somehow I have managed to avoid this little gem of a book. Until now.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love it so far!
Im not a big reader, but when I realized my marriage needed help I was willing to read every book I could get my hands on if it would help. Im just in the third chapter of this one but I can already see a difference inmy communication with others and I cant wait to keep reading! What I really like about this book is the way it's written. It seems as though Mr Gottman writes as if he were speaking in converstation and adds a bit of humor as well. I am really enjoying this book! 4 stars just because im not done with it yet, but I think it will be a 5!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Relationship Cure : A 5 Step Guide to Strengthening Your Marriage, Family, and Friendships
Practical is the main wqord.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Insightful
This book is so simple yet, so true.I like the fact that the content came out of real observations of people. The steps are clearly grounded in reality... not just theory about the way people behave.

5-0 out of 5 stars this worked for my child
I am very impressed by this program. My son was 5 1/2 and half way through kindergarten last winter and didn't know a single sight word.He was already speech delayed and I knew that was going to cause enough problems in school.I didn't want him to be behind academically as well.I found this program and am so thankful I did.He was reading books by the end of kindergarten and his teachers couldn't believe his progress.I just sat through his IEP meeting at the beginning of first grade and he has no academic IEP goals (now if we could just get the speech and behavior worked out).My only regret is that I did not find this book sooner.I will certainly start my other children much, much sooner.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting methodology but...
...overall too ponderous and unwieldly for teaching an average child to read...perhaps more to the point it's quite tedious and would probably be difficult to use given a typical child's attention span...however, for remedial work in adults I suspect it would be quite useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
Three months into kindergarten my son's teacher and I were concerned because he was having such a hard time learning the names and sounds of his letters.A friend recommended this book to me so we started it.He learned so much faster by just doing the sounds of the letters first.By the end of the school year his teacher was amazed at his progress.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good research
I think that this book has some great stories to get you excited about signing. I love the research in this book. I would like more signs. I bought this book and a baby sign language dictionary called Teach Your Tot to Sign that has tons of signs that I use everyday. I suggest that you do that too if you want to learn more signs. Keep signing because our babies have so much to say and no way to say it with their mouths but they can use their hands!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book if you like touching stories, needs a larger sign dictionary
I started out with this book when my daughter was about 6 months. She has some language delay but started picking up some signs by 13 months and by 15 months she was picking up new ones daily (she couldn't speak any words).unfortunately, this book doesn't have a very exhaustive list of useful signs so you will have to get a different one eventually.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginning & reference book.
Even though my son is 20 months old, we have gotten a lot of use out of this book. The illustrations are great and there are songs to sing in the back of the book that incorporate signs as well.We get a kick out of doing the butterfly song and it's really helped in his language development. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy if Affair was with an OLD FLAME
Glass has some good suggestions on how to rebuild your marriage after an affair, however she made some very troubling comments in regards to affairs with ex's and/or "Old Flames".Some of the comments almost seem to encourage affairs with Ex's.Her are a few examples:
5-0 out of 5 stars This truly did save my sanity and our relationship!
Oh boy...Was I a mess after I found out about the affair.I couldn't stop obsessing about it and the anger stayed at the boiling point at our house. He was too immersed in shame to reach out and help.We wanted to save our relationship but weren't sure how.We couldn't manage a civil conversation about anything and I wanted to know every detail.I happened across a magazine article about cheating that suggested this book.I went straight home, ordered it, paid for overnight shipping, and started reading as soon as it arrived. It definitely helped me regain my sanity and helped us talk in a constuctive way so the healing could start. He wouldn't read the book but I shared the advice it gave and we both followed it.We've succeeded and strangely enough, are probably doing better now than before the affair. If you've been the victim of an affair and wonder when the pain will start to subside, I strongly suggest you order this book. When it arrives, put everything else aside and just read and read and start to regain your sanity.
4-0 out of 5 stars Root of the problem
I was quite impressed with this book, it is alot to get through, but focuses on the root of the problem and encourages self analysis. In effect giving you some pointers to be your own therapist, and work through the current siuation into the next phase of life after infidelity.I only give it four stars because it can be a little repeatative and doesn't focus much on the effects on and ways to deal with your children at this tough time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The book is awesome, but...
For me, the book started in the middle since I'm already aware of the damage of the traditional parenting style in our society.I understand why he wrote what he did in the first part of the book, though, since a lot of it is news to a great deal of people.
5-0 out of 5 stars Parenting for emotional competence and relationships
This book is an excellent resource for parents who want to move away from parenting children who are simply obedientand "apparently" no trouble.Because the world has changed, and the family context is very different from that in which most parents were brought up, it is extremely important to help them develop strong resilient families where children learn emotional competence as well as how they belong and care in their relationships- skills they will need for life in the world of 21C.This book offers well researched strategies for achieving these goals and helping parents find a credible way to cope with the changes they face.

5-0 out of 5 stars A much-needed shift in thinking about parenting
This is perhaps one of the most important books I've read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Parents of Teens & Pre-teens
Great hands-on advice for learning how to love your pre-teen and teenager.I wish now that I had this book when my first daughter was a teen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Christian resource on parenting teens
The Five Love Languages for Teenagers by Gary Chapman is a book every parent needs to own.I'll admit, I went looking for a quick fix with this book. The other Love Languages books have a quiz in the back to help you identify your language, and that's right where I went with this book: to the back.I was disappointed to find no quiz in this book, but Chapman explains that teenagers would be quick to figure out how to manipulate the system if they knew that we were trying to figure them out.The book discusses the five love languages as broken down in Chapman's other books in this series, but directs them specifically at how teenagers are affected by them.I learned so much from this book about how to talk to my kids and that both of my teens are quality time people.During the course of reading this book, I've seen a change in my daughter already. She's spent more time talking to me, because I've spent more time listening to her. This is a book I will purchase for my own bookshelf and continue the practices in it for the next 17 years (until my three-year-old turns 20).

5-0 out of 5 stars "Must reading for any parent or teacher of teenagers"

5-0 out of 5 stars great!
this book is one of the most commonly borrowed books by patients.they report liking it and it helping them in making progress in their journey to greater sense of self worth.i personally liked it, as well.easy read.not the most academically-based, researched book, but, then, it's supposed to be an applied workbook.another reviewer wrote about not liking the anti-gay sentiments.i, maybe not as astute as that writer, found that the issue wasn't as much anti-gay as it is the person who is gay who doesn't accept one's self. either way, it's turned out to be an excellent book, i would recommend it and i think that it was definitely worth the purchase price, new.

5-0 out of 5 stars ACoA can benefit from this book
I have dealt with anxiety from time to time in my life. Lately, I decided to go to a therapist who recommended this book. This book has helped me understand that some beliefs from my childhood are distorted such as "boys don't cry,"and it is wrong to get angry, so I am learning how to use techniques in order to replace negative thoughts into more positive ones. I am learning a lot about myself because of this book. More importantly, I am learning to deal with my anxiety effectively. I wished I had applied these techniques in my childhood, but you know the saying, "it is never too late."

5-0 out of 5 stars Increase your psychological self-esteem without seeing a psychologist
Everyone talks about the importance of self-esteem, but how exactly do you go about increasing it?The Self-Esteem Workbook is a sequence of 27 short chapters that address various aspects of self-esteem along with exercises that promote awareness and change.Schiraldi argues that unconditional worth, love, and growing are the three factors that help self-esteem to flourish, and each gets its own section. For example, in the unconditional worth section, readers are asked to rate themselves on certain personality characteristics and then to reflect on which attributes they feel best about. The concept of self-esteem that is used throughout is the psychological construct, not the kind of "self-esteem" where everyone on the team gets prizes.

Google the words Foster Cline and Attachment Therapy, and be prepared to lose your lunch. Happy research!

5-0 out of 5 stars Who is this child and what happened to my 5 year-old?
This book is very reassuring to the parents of a child who turns six and becomes someone very different from the sweet, compliant five-year-old of yesterday. Our boy's behavior was "textbook" so many times that our mantra has become "It's in the book".Even though he is still a delight 99% of the time, we will all be glad when he gets through this period of disequilibrium and is a little more loving and less defiant.

This book helped me put a lot of parenting into perspective. I found that the take-home messages of the book are easy to remember. The key one for me was, "Who owns the problem?"What a concept. The premise is that rescuing my kids from the consequences of their actions is a lousy way to teach kids responsibility. The section on grounding of kids was great too. This book is making me question practically every aspect of my knee-jerk parenting responses.Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sound Advice for Breaking Bad Habits!
I saw this book just as I was about to call "that man" again--the one my friends told me to dump before I went completely crazy. This book is indeed a survival guide to letting go of toxic relationships that many of us have at some time in our lives. There are questions and writing exercises in the book that help us understand why we are attracted to men who have no interest in us romantically and never will regardless of what we do to change their minds.Instead, this book teaches us the techniques in recovering from rejection and moving on with the help of a support system. The writing exercises are invaluable and therapeutic. When you finish reading this book, you will have taken the first step towards finding and attracting men who are emotionally available and are able to meet your needs. So, before you pick up the phone, read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful
This author can offer authoritative, insightful information to a recently heartbroken woman because she has an active psychotherapy practice in which she specifically deals with women who experience relationship issues.I found this book to offer clinical advice on some matters in terms easily understood by the layperson. This book explains why we often have the compulsion to call or otherwise cling to men who have clearly given us all indications that they no longer (or never) wish to commit to us and a relationship with us.I thank the author for creating this work because it truly helped me to refrain from calling (and allowing him to call me).I gleaned insight as to why, even after having left me, my ex still calls me to tell me that he loves me and wants to be with me--can we say AMBIVALENCE and MANIPULATION???I am glad that I had this book to assist me with an exceptionally painful breakup--it helped me to understand WHY the breakup was painful and offered some steps to take to work through it.I found this book to be timely and useful.THANKS A MILLION!

4-0 out of 5 stars States the obvious, but proves a point
I bought this book for myself after I went through a break-up.It showed me that I was not the only one that felt that way and helped me a lot mainly by stating obvious things but sometimes hearing them again and again really helps. I passed the book along to a friend and she took it with her everywhere for a few weeks and wrote and highligted all over it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the help for my toddler
She really breaks it down and helps me understand my son's sleep patterns, what he needs me to do and what I may want to consider changing in our routine.I've made a few changes as she suggested and so far so good!

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked for us!
I highly recommend this book for anyone! It was our saving grace!
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must for any parents with toddlers
I read countless books on sleeping out of desperation.I've met a few parents who think they have all the answers to the sleep problem and they have only one child who happened to be 'not normal' and sleep well.I wish I had read this book much earlier.I tried cry-out methods (and there're many variations) and they only work temporarily.Everytime we sleep over at our in-laws, one of them get sick, or something changed, we had to go through the horrible cry-out methods over and over again.I've been thinking I am not persistent and can't control my own kids (I have two boys 4 & 2 1/2).While reading this book, I assessed my kids' sleep habits and was relieved they're normal and getting enough sleep.I just needed to adjust a few little things and even before I finished the book, everyone (including myself!) started sleeping better at night.Night routines are much more pleasant.Of course, there are nights they wake up and come to get me, but armed with helpful information, I can deal with it much more effectively and everyone quickly goes back to sleep.I feel much happier since I am getting better sleep at nights. We're expecting our third and I am going to read her book on babies. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Illuminating
With an emphasis on words and the associations we make with them, Rogers unveils how some children continue to re-experience and re-live past trauma.First, she describes her own childhood crises in a narrative that is both revealing and intimate. She describes her state in ways that allow one to experience it as she had, instead of something simply as foreign and "over with."Then, through example, we follow her as she tries to understand what the children's gestures and words are trying to "say" without their being able to verbalize it.However, she uses the children's own meanings of things (instead of simply standard symbolic meanings) to re-explain to them what has happened and how it continues to persist in their lives, unwittingly. This is what keeps it fresh and real. Moreover, throughout the book, there is an unstated underlying stream of empathy and relatedness. A great book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cognitive therapy classic
I read this book when I was going through a divorce several years ago.The handbook helped me to review the thinking that was contributing to my depression. Although my depression was situational, I was overwhelmed and was filtering information negatively.Recently, my son went through a depression and I gave him this book and another excellent book, Optimal Thinking--How to Be Your Best Self that provides specific questions to resolve disturbing emotions.I recommend each of these books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars *****The best wedding saver resource out there****
I bought this book about a year ago right after I got engaged.Since then I am constantly amazed at how much research and collaboration the authors have done on this book.I have spent hours in books store flipping through all the wedding books and have found that hands down this is the best out there if you are wanting to save some money and get the best bargain.I am definitely recommending this book to all my friends and everyone planning a wedding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I have to admit, I plan events for a living (Fundraisers & Corporate events, but no clue on wedding planning) so I figured I needed something to "enlight me" and I bought this book from this website I have to say I love it! I has awesome ideas, obviously you might not agree with every single thing in it, but still, some of the ideas are great. Also, the book is kind of funny, the writers are great. I hightly recomend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bridal Bargains is a great help!
There are so many factors that go into wedding planning, it can be overwhelming!I bought this book because I have a rather modest budget, but still want my special day to be, well, special. There are dozens of great tips, and tons of information - things I never would have thought of myself. My only complaint is the size and shape of the book itself - I suppose it's long and narrow to fit into a tote, but instead its a little difficult to deal with.Of course, this doesn't have anything to do with what's inside!I highly recommend this book! ... Editorial Review

According to author Loren Cordain, modern health and diet problems didn't start with the advent of packaged snack food, but much earlier--back at the dawn of the agricultural age many thousands of years ago. As humans became less nomadic and more dependent on high-carbohydrate diets, we left behind the diet we had evolved with, which is based on low-fat proteins and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Sugars, fats, and carbs were rare, if they were present at all, and survival required a steady, if low-key, level of activity. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Stricter Variation of the South Beach/Atkins Diet
This diet elimninates starches and grains, sugar, of course, legumes and dairy products and makes the case for us eating like our ancestors. Good examples and receipies. May be hard to follow completely in its purest form.

2-0 out of 5 stars Closer to healthy than atkins, but not quite there.
The Paleo Diet is based on an interesting premise- the idea that what we ate before agriculture suited our needs perfectly because our bodies had been bred by evolution in response to our what we could find to eat in our environment. It seems like a giant leap to assume our paleolithic ancestors naturally gravitated towards exactly what we need to eat. Animals in the wild do make sensible choices most of the time, because their decisions are instinctual. Self-awareness creates a problem that doesn't exist for other animal behavior as it does for humans. Sometimes we do things out of curiosity, or laziness, or false beliefs. So, considering the erratic behavior of present-day humans, who is to say our paleolithic ancestors were any more intuitive about their nutritive needs? Even the book suggests humans ate what they did out of trial and error, frequently just trying whatever they encountered in the wild.
