4-0 out of 5 stars Also Good for Fathers-To-Be
One of the very few stipulations my wife made after we learned we were going to have a child is that I read this book by the doyenne of natural childbirth in the U.S. While the tone of the book is much too touchy-feely/hippyish for me, I have to admit that it is well worth reading regardless of whether you're planning a natural childbirth or a fully tech'ed out hospital one. That said, it would be very easy to read it as gospel and get swept up in its giddy repudiation of modern medicine, so one should approach it with, if not a skeptical eye, at least with one's critical faculties fully engaged. There is also the potential that readers who are fully committed to a hospital birth may come away from this book feeling scolded, or as if their decision is somehow"wrong".
5-0 out of 5 stars Ina May is an Inspiration to all women
I read Ina May's book "Spiritual Wifery" and was inspired to get a midwife for the birth of my child (I am now 34 weeks). This book is even better thatn the 1st because it is 1) up to date, 2)has clear recommendations on what to do to have an unmedicated birth and 3) full of science and positive birth stories, she separates fact from fiction. And there's a lot of fiction out there concerning birth in the USA!Every woman should read this book, especially pregnant women.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
I love all of Ina May's books, but this one is, hands down, the best book on childbirth out there. It tottaly changed my perceptions on childbirth, my body, etc., and it is very informative when it comes to the topic of interventions and the choices that women have. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend Sensational Kids
Have you ever wanted to be a 'little mouse in the corner' to see what life is really like for children with a Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)?You can do that through Lucy Miller's new book, Sensational Kids. This book is truly sensational.I've been recommending it to a lot of the parents and teachers of students I service.
5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not finished reading yet, and our lives have already changed!
My 3.5 year-old daughter was diagnosed with SPD (at that time it was called SID) when she was 8 months old, and has been in and out of OT ever since.Lately she has had some significant behavior problems, and we have tried multiple strategies that haven't worked.I'm a counselor and parent coach, and I was beginning to feel very inept because all the strategies that I teach my clients weren't working with my own child. When I started reading this book, I realized (duh!) that the behavior issues were caused by SPD, and, therefore, typical "behavior management" techniques don't work the same way.We have changed our framework in responding to her behavior, and my daughter has become the most cooperative and happy child overnight. Her teachers have even noticed a huge change from just giving her a big tight hug when she begins to "melt down."It's incredible! Our lives have been completely changed in just a few days.Thank you, Lucy, and we hope to see you soon at the STAR Center in Colorado!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Lucy Miller...Congratulations and Many Thanks!
I am thrilled with Sensational Kids:Hope and Help for Children with SPD!Dr. Lucy Miller has done an outstanding job of making a complex subject understandable in an easy-to-read format.Sensory Processing Disorder creates life challenges for many children and their families. The hope and help that Dr. Miller shares is powerful and offers the latest information - right at our fingertips! Her work with research is far-reaching and is making a positive difference for so many people! We are behind you Dr. Miller! 3-0 out of 5 stars Other than the actual "Ferberizing", great info
I am a mother of 6 month old twins who recently *both* were waking every 1 to 2 hours on some nights.I read this book after trying No-Cry Sleep Solution for a month with lots of improvment on everything *except* the number of night-wakings.The girls fell asleep faster, easier, and with less help - but kept waking up, dropping only about one night-waking.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - REALLY helped
Our two older kids basically didn't fall asleep on their own for a long time, as well as woke up quite frequently at nights. We were big followers of Sears method. I think, our nervous system was quite drained as a result of bad and insufficient sleep.
4-0 out of 5 stars On the fourth night, it really seems to be working!
I think now, after trying the Ferber method, that a baby trying to fall asleep is just like a curious kitten that climbed up a tree and got herself stuck.I thought that my baby was always crying for us, but really she was crying for our help so she could fall back asleep. We were always rescuing our little kitten from that tall tree branch by picking her up out of the tree, without teaching her how to climb down on her own.

5-0 out of 5 stars LISTEN!!! for anyone who read the reviews about Dr. Young's lack of cred
This book is full of amazing health advice that, for the most part you already knew (you just didn't know exactly why it was healthy). Yes this diet, if followed word for word is difficult. WHO SAYS YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW ANYTHING WORD FOR WORD. Fundamentalist religious people don't even follow their book of choice word for word. Take what works for you and make it work for you. Super hydration, and green supplements are essential for our malnutritioned society. Eat more green vegetables. Eat higher water rich foods. Lower your intake of refined sugars (and fruit juice that averages 50 grams of sugar per serving!). Are these pieces of advice that need credential backing. Listen, If you asked ten ivy-league educated doctors their opinion on any given health issue, you would get ten different answer, maybe more depending on what drug company they are more closely linked to. BE LOGICAL. The majority of this book is irrefutable. The rest, as with any new theory you'll have to exercise faith. Which, by the way is what you're constantly doing with western medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars change your life
With the changes today in how we view our health, this book is great. The need to understand how we can control our own health is without so many drugs and is within these pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars a PH Miracle for life
I have been following this program for 2 1/2 years. I was dealing with numerous health challenges, some quite serious. I started this, quit drinking coffee, soda, eating meat and have never looked back. My extreme acidreflux was gone in a matter of days. I lost 28 pound in just under 3 months, my rosacea I have suffered with for 5+ years is completely gone. I have strangers tell me how beautiful my skin looks and I no longer have flare ups, I get facials, peels and go in the sun! My liver and digestive system are working again! This program may sound complicated, but it is not. It is the simplicity of it that makes it work. And puts all the responsibility in your hands for your health. I have fired my Doctor!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sun Shone on Me
Get the "Expanded Edition" if possible. Alcoholic issues and mental health issues have been around for quite some time. Woititz Marries the two in a wonderful owner's manual for your (or someone close to yours soul) The person close to me was severely compromised by her (sober) parents ACoA issues and the other siblings' willingness to buy into the insanity. If you can find a book called "Grandchildren of Alcoholics" by Ann W. Smith, it is an excellent resourse for people who dont see alcoholism in their own families, but perhaps do see it in their grandparents. Would love to hear from others on the same journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational/Easy to Read
This book is excellant for ACOA's who wish to gain a better understanding of how their childhood has lasting effects on their life as an adult. It was my first book on the subject, and a great introduction.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a good first book on the subject
I've read a number of books on this subject. I wouldn't say this book was unhelpful but is too absolute in its information to be anything but alarming to anyone tentatively looking for answers. It's also not very well written. I would suggest reading either "Recovery, A Guide for Adult Children of Alcoholics" by Gravitz & Bowden (an excellent first book) along with "A Primer on Adult Children of Alcoholics" by Cermak for an added layer; and then, absolutely essential as a more in-depth book: "Children of Alcoholism - A Survivor's Manual" by Seixas & Youcha. Leave the Woititz book for more information. By all means, read it. It does have excellent information; just remember the adage "Take what you need and leave the rest". Something she unfortunately forgot to include. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I am a patient of Dr. Vliet
I purchased Dr. Vliet's book while searching for relief from a difficult gynecological and urinary tract problem.I found the chapters dealing with my problem very easy to read and could not put it down. I was so impressed, that I made an appointment to visit her office.Over 4 hours were spent at Dr. Vliet's office going over in great detail my medical history. I had these problems for almost 20 years, and other doctors had told me "it was all in my head"!Dr. Vliet clearly explained why I had these problems and we developed a successful treatment plan. The staff was empathetic and knowledgable. Her research is exceptional and I have recommended this book to other doctors and medical professionals. Very few doctors are knowledgable about hormones largely do to the misinformation in the press and the propaganda distributed by the drug companies. It has been 3 years since I first visited Dr. Vliet and I thank God every day that I found this book and my life has returned to normal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, But Not Easy to Read!
This book is fantastic and you get a true sense in your gut that she is telling the facts.I have recommended this book to several doctor friends and regular friends, who all have ordered it.All my friends have the same complaint, that their doctors won't listen to them or won't give them the tests they want.Fortunately my dr. is very open to trying different things. What my doctor said, is it's my body and I can chose how to deal with it.One thing that is interesting, is that I asked my doctor for the N-telopeptide (NTx) test, and they had never heard of it.Also the lab where I had the test done had never heard of it either.Just goes to show you have to be your own advocate!
5-0 out of 5 stars Still the best book on the subject
I have bought this book seven years ago, when I was still in my thirties. My erratic hormone levels had caused me so much trouble I was at my wits' end. I read the book then, and I have read it again recently, in my early forties, when a sympathetic gynaecologist offered me a hormone replacement therapy. In between the readings, I have done my best to learn all about nutrition, healthy living, and about keeping healthy balance. Reading widely, I discovered dogmas and ideologies both in the allopathic and the alternative medicine camps. Elisabeth Vliet is in neither camp; she is quite the opposite of ideological. She knows what she is talking about, and no authority will change what she has learned through practice. My conclusion today is that Screaming to be heard is probably the best available book on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for all Dads of Daughters
This is a book to be read and re-read at various stages of your daughter's life.It provides encouragement, insight and a fresh perspective on the girl or girls in your charge -- as well as some insight into your wife. Whenever friends tell me that they are pregnant with a girl, this is the gift I give.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful information!
My husband is a great dad. I gave this to him as a birthday gift. He loved it! He read it in 2 weeks. He is now an even greater dad!!!!!!! I advise you to buy this for any DAd you know who has a girl. Dads sometimes underestimate the power they have to shape their little girls. Your little girl will be formed by her Dad r/to: future jobs, relationships, life skills, choosing a mate, the list goes on and on. Yes, as a mom, I read it too! Buy it today!!!! P.S. 3-0 out of 5 stars Overall, OK, but beware of bias
You'll find lots of short, direct answers to a lot of common parenting and medical questions in this book. However, I was bothered by Dr. Brown's bias when it came to certain topics; she presents her opinions as established fact when at times it isn't.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!!!
This book is such a great reference for first time moms, like me. It has such straightforward advice and information for any level of parental education. I am a pediatric nurse practitioner in a large clinic and an experienced NICU nurse, and of course, you think that you know a lot. However, I can tell you that I learned so much with every page and chapter. I will recommend this book to my parents daily!! I am even taking it to my work when I return from maternity leave, in case I need a quick reference!!

5-0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL for the first time mom
I don't think I can give enough praise for this book.It is so well written with humor and common sense. As a new mother I skimmed it constantly for answers to my daughter's latest skin issue, bowel movement, eating schedule, etc.I consider myself well-read.I am college educated and have a good head on my shoulders...but there was nothing that fully prepared me for motherhood once I got there at 30.This book was a blessing for both our family and our pediatrician's office who had one less phone call to answer!

1-0 out of 5 stars Justifies affairs
I hated this book.It says quite strongly that if you're not meeing ALL your spouse's needs ALL the time, they may "fall victim" to an affair. It is a kind of emotional blackmail.None of us is perfect at meeting our spouse's needs. While I encourage communication about these needs, it is awful to use any shortcomings (which we all have) to justify a spouse's straying.

3-0 out of 5 stars why didn't they give us "the joy of sex"??
*sigh* someone gave us this for our wedding, so I read it on the honeymoon.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lifesaver!
I swear by this book, the techniques work like magic, and it made me feel okay about letting my baby sleep in the swing.I would not only recommend this book to all new parents, I would say that it is absolutely a requirement to read if you have a new baby or will soon.Don't have a baby without it!It's also a very interesting read.I absolutely loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The single most valuable purchase for our baby!
I started reading this book when my newborn was about 2 weeks old and I only wish I had read it before she was born because as soon as I started implementing the techniques that Dr. Karp suggests for calming babies, I found I was able to comfort my crying baby almost instantly.I plan to purchase this book for every expectant mom I know - its that good, and honestly, it may be the best gift any parent could receive!
5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my life!
It may sound a bit melodramatic but if this book didn't save my life it sure made it a zillion times better.Since my baby's arrival there is the BTB and the ATB -the "Before The Book" and the "After The Book". The difference has been like night and day...my newborn daughter used to cry and scream for what seemed hours and hours and got so upset she couldn't (and I couldn't help her to) find her way to calmness, after trying nearly everything we would end up crying together... I felt so scared and anxious whenever her fussy time would start...but after reading this book and aplying the techniques for the 5 S's well... I am scared no more. I feel truly empowered. These methods 1. the snug swaddling, 2. the white noise, 3. the swaying, 4. the sucking; they all work -if performed correctly. Now when my baby cries, it's no longer a marathon cry...we apply the layers of soothing and she is back to her happy calm self in no time, and if sleeping, she sleeps at least twice as long as before. I am forever grateful to the author.

4-0 out of 5 stars out of syn child
I got the book in great condition, and I can't really review it higher because I haven't gotten through the whole book yet. It seems very helpful so far, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars At last!!!!
I was told about this book by a doctor andfinally I feel better knowing there is a name for what our child was experiencing. We thought it was odd he never cuddled and did not like to walk on certain textures, etc. As i read this book,I could picture exactly how our child would react to situations and it all clicked. Now he is getting a therapist trained in sensory development.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for ANY parent
This book is the must-read for every parent, whether their children suffer from sensory integration or not.It is an eye opening look into the way we interpret our surroundings, and has given me information, tools, and hope for my daughter, who suffers severe developmental delays from this disorder.I would highly reccommend this book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best baby name book ever!
I have never felt compelled to write a review for a book on Amazon until I bought this book!I am in the process of naming my third baby.Although I already had five baby name books on my shelf, I picked this up at the bookstore and immediately wanted it.I am so glad I bought it.Not only is it a great book for naming your baby but it's extremely interesting to sit and read. This book is so much more than just a list of names, or a dictionary of name meanings. After searching countless baby name websites and my other baby name books I had come across no names I liked well enough to put on my list. After reading this book, so many names struck me as great options.I have a list so long now I don't know how to choose!Feel confident in choosing to buy this book!Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most enlightening baby-name book I've ever read
This is the most fantastic baby-name book I've ever read. And I've read it purely for FUN. The truth is, my husband and I have our minds made up about Baby #3's name (or, at least, we've narrowed the selection down considerably), and STILL, I can't put Laura's book down. (I've also spent way too many hours perusing her archived blogs online.)

3-0 out of 5 stars 2 1/2 stars.
this book is not very good. if you have ever had sex this book does not tell you anything new. basically it tells you a couple positions. guy on top. girl on top. it tells you not to wear a flannel pajamas and bunny slippers to bed if you want to turn your partner on. just basic things that are nothing more than common knowledge. sorry to say im very disappointed and would not reccomend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Become the sex goddess you've always wanted to be!
Or at least be bad in bed, that is to say, be a bad girl. It's all about confidence, the author states, and it is. This book helps to give us women sexual confidence we may have been lacking. It's one of the better books I've read about sex, along with "Good Sex, a woman's guide" among others.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, worth buying
Its a great book for any woman who wants to be a little more outgoing where sex is concerned. Outgoing meaning uninhibited not prostitute or slut girl. It's a very liberating book. The author does not advocate protitution or a loss of self respect, but an incorporation of a healthy sex life into a healthy personality. It is not meant to change your whole persona, just your outlook on sex. For example, the author tells you to go into your underwear drawer and throw away any underwear that you wouldn't want to be caught in if by chance you had the opportunity to be intimate with a hunky movie star. She is not saying to go be with a hunky movie star but to dress in more appealing undergarments for your partner or just for yourself to feel sexy and good about yourself and to be proud of your body. It definitely does not say to go out and sleep with everyone!--not at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goodman's Fourier Optics 3rd Edition:An Improved Classic.
For the last month, I have been using this book for self study to aid me in my work with lasers.Originally, I was working from the 1st edition (borrowed from a co-worker), but decided to buy my own copy.I wound up buying the 3rd edition, a significantly expanded version of the original.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide
I really enjoy using this reference guide to parenting. It helped me learn new parenting skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Toddler Resource
This is the best toddler discipling resource i have seen. Most of the books that offer true discipline tips and advice are for older kids, and the ones for toddlers offer ways to keep from needing to use discipline, but if you're in a situation where you need to- they are no help. As a mom of a very active 2 and a half year old boy i found it priceless! It truly is like advice from an older neighbor who has been there!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars practical tips and funny stories
This is a great resource that should be on every parents' shelf! It offers down-to-earth, sensible tips for dealing with a multitude of common parenting dilemmas, but my favorite parts are the funny stories.Being a parent is a hard job, but it's easier if we keep a sense of humor and relish the ridiculous situations that inevitably occur with kids. It's also reassuring to know that the authors have 'been there!'I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty accurate.
Having been (and perhaps am still) a combination of "queen bee"/"floater", I found this book to be amazingly accurate. Though the situations are a bit overdramatic (and generalized), the book is amazingly accurate when it comes to the social behavior of girls.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Book
I thought that this book is a great book for parents of teens to read.It includes realistic examples of different situations that his/her daughter might be in, but some of the stadegies suggested to solve problems are not always good.I an a teen myself, and I think that some of the ideas given were just another way to embarass the teen rather than help them.the general idea of the book, though, was good.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall: ok...
I felt that this book was just ok. It was well written, and I can see how it would benefit a parent of a teen. However, I am a teen, and I feel that some of the book was a little too dramatic and harsh on teens. There are some dramatizations of situations which were somewhat unrealistic. Besides this, I feel that it was an interesting read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good information
I used this book to train my 29 month old son just over 2 weeks ago.He was fully trained within a week, including staying dry at night.Actually, he started staying dry at night (day 2) before he stopped having accidents during the daytime. He had 7 accidents on day one.I was starting to lose hope when it suddenly clicked for him.He stayed dry for the second half of day one and had about 1 accident per day until day 6 (I had a little trouble convincing him to poo-poo in the potty).
5-0 out of 5 stars It really works!
I am so thankful for this toilet training book!As a [once] working mom, a stay-at-home mom, and as a mother of a child with a disability, I recommend this book to everyone!!We all want to potty train our child as quickly as possible and this book tells you how.I don't think there is a quicker method available.Even if you don't get the child trained in "less than a day," your child will still be toilet trained quicker by using this method than other methods.I have trained 6 children, and it took my kids an average of 2-3 days to be potty trained. What other method can do that?
4-0 out of 5 stars Positive Reinforcement
I liked the dicrete trial/positive reinforcement approach of the book. It can be very effective, and work quickly. My son didn't have it down in one day, but three days later, we were good to go. Give it a try! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bipolar Survival Guide
Excellent resource for families struggling with this devastating diagnosis. Lots of great information and help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to coping with bipolar disorder/manic depression
I have read many books about bipolar disorder, and this is one of the best I've found. It offers strategies for coping with the diagnosis itself, depression, and mania. It talks about diagnostic criteria, biology of the disease, medications, psychotherapy, and coping in both family and work settings. The fact that there is only an 8% chance of passing bipolar to your kids (20% if you include major depression) was worth the price of the book all by itself. ...
