5-0 out of 5 stars David's courage story continues
10 stars - As with David's first book A Child called It this book is just as fabulous. It really gives readers an excellent perspective of what's it like to be a foster child. To get attached to people and then have to leave, never really knowing where your going to end up. In this book David thankfully was taken out of his mothers care and ended up a F-Child or Foster Child. In the book we see young David still struggling with what his mother did too him and wondering the biggest question why? We see David over several years go through 5 foster families each who help shape and mold his life for the better. We see him go from a scared little 12 year old to a young man who sees more for himself and has a path planned for his future.

4-0 out of 5 stars One person's tragedy is another's miracle
Sitting down with this book, I thought it would be just as heartbreaking as "A child called it". However, this book was inspiring and moving. David Pelzer took a tradgedy and turned it into a miracle. None the less, he managed to do this all before the age of eighteen, a challenge most adults could not take on. As David reaches his goals, he teaches all of us an important lesson, reach for the stars and never give up; there is always room for hope, love, and passion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking, inspirational story - Highly Recommended!
I wasn't a big reader until recently after finishing my Master's degree and not having anything to do with all my free time. I heard about A Child Called It from a friend and read it in 24 hours. It was a horrifying tale and I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to go through that kind of abuse and neglect as a child. Within the hour of finishing that book, I drove to the closest bookstore to pick up The Lost Boy, but I couldn't find it!!! I ordered it from Amazon and the wait was somewhat painful. I just had to know what happened next and I couldn't stop thinking about little David Pelzer until my book finally arrived!

Editorial Review

People joke that the start of a couple's marriage means the end of their sex life. David Schnarch, a sex therapist praised by Pepper Schwartz, uses epiphany-laden conversations taken directly from his own marriage and the married couples he sees in practice to help readers defy the myth that marriages are necessarily passionless, and instead prove that the longer a couple has been together, the higher the fireworks can fly. It's especially aimed at older couples who, Schnarch says, are self-actualized and therefore better able to handle intimacy than younger partners. "People have difficulty with intimacy because they're supposed to," he says, and goes on in this inspiring book to combine elements of marriage therapy and sex therapy to bring plenty of practical, fresh ideas to the crowd of mostly vapid relationship books. (Note that despite its title, it's for any emotionally committed couple, not just married folks.) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, inspiring and reassuring advice
My wife and I have been married for 7 years. We have had a great time together but gradually we started being colder and less anticipating. It was obvious that the things were going in a bad direction. I was reluctant to rely on a book but a friend of mine recommended me this one so I bought it. I completely agree that this is an excellent book!
4-0 out of 5 stars This is NOT a self-help manual - thank goodness!

5-0 out of 5 stars Diminished desire
Diminished sexual desire is the clear problem of focus for most couples I now see in my private practice as a psychologist and sex therapist. This book is one that is written for mature individuals who can harness the energy of a committed relationship and find a meaningful and powerful substitute for the spiritually empty variations of excitement so often marketed in the self-help section of the bookstore. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book.
I can't recommend this book enough. When people say babies don't come with owner's manuals, I say they haven't read The Baby Whisperer. Friends and family were shocked, SHOCKED that both of my kids slept through the night at 8 weeks, fell asleep on their own, and napped beautifully. I was able to interpret their cries and movements so I could anticipate their needs. I and my babies were happy and content.
4-0 out of 5 stars Loved It - Saved us a Ton of Headaches as New Parents!
We loved this book - both my husband and I.The author has a very balanced view on baby scheduling and other helpful tips for new parents. Our sweet baby girl was on a wonderful schedule within 3 weeks and slept through the night at 6 weeks old! Now, we realize that all babies are different, so you need to see what works best for you & your family - read it and see what you think!

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for new moms
this is my 1st review.i found myself buying yet another copy for an expectant friend, and i just had to let everyone know how much this book helped me.it helped me look at the world from my son's perspective.helped me come to terms that if my baby cries it's not because i've done something wrong. it's just his way of communicating a need.this book will help a new and completely inexperienced mother understand and gently guide her new child in his or her first months of life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of two great books for stressed out parents
As parents who have seen many of our friends completely lose perspective as their kids apply to college, my wife and decided that we would not go down that road when our time came. Forget all the books that imply they will get your child into a "brand name" school. It's about discovering together a place where they can grow, and strenghtening your relationshipas you launch them toward their future. In the name of sanity, I recommend this book (and also a great one our own pediatrician recommended, "Getting In Without Freaking Out.") Stop hovering -- start helping your kids by not imposing your agenda.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential book for parents of high school students
As a pediatrician and the mother of a senior, I see the unhealthy stress that my patients and some classmates of my son go through during high school, particularly during their senior year. This essential book for every high school parent will give them new models for guiding their child to healthy success.Rather than defining success for your high school student as getting into a college ranked high by a magazine, parents will learn how to help their child define and reach their own goals. For those who choose college, they need a parent's help to find the right match --- a school that allows them to grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially.

2-0 out of 5 stars Read Other Books First
I have recently completed reading BabyWise II. I consider myself a Christian and this book is extremely popular in my church. Throughout the entire book, I had moments of complete confusion and disagreement accompanied by moments of complete agreement and lucidity regarding how to implement these methods. However, by the end, I realized that I should not be confused by or passionately against any section of a book that would truly benefit my child.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
My son also had trouble eating and staying awake. At 7 weeks I thought i would scream. We followed the advice in this book and our son started sleeping through the night by 9 weeks. We love these books and have a wonderful polite kind 4 year old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby Wise
I loved the first Baby Wise book and the 2nd is also just as helpful. Everyone tells me I have such a good baby and that I'm so lucky.I tell them it's not luck but, Baby Wise.I tell all my friends and family who are pregnant or have children about these books. They are so wonderful and based on Christian teachings which I think is so important.I am a pediatric emergency nurse and I see so many children that are demand fed and have no routine (as the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends) in there lives and these parents are usually stressed out and have fussy babies.I recommend Baby Wise to them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars See Your Son or Your Students Here
The library at the college where I work puts out a list of new books they have purchased in our area once per month, and this book was on the psychology list back in January.I thought it looked interesting and picked it up then, thinking it might have some good things to say about a book I'm writing about men and depression.I finally picked it up and started reading it last week, and finished it in less than a week.I really enjoyed the authors' styles of writing which made some of the technical information more accessible and easier to understand, which to me means it would be a great resource for students studying education and for parents of boys of all ages.
5-0 out of 5 stars A teacher's review
More informative than 'Boys and Girls Learn Differently,' 'The Minds of Boys' is a fascinating look into the specific reasons why boys are doing so poorly in school nowadays. Very, very awfulif you did not know - Boys are the overwhelming majority of special education students, are more likely to drop out, and are much less likely to attend college.
4-0 out of 5 stars A needed step forward for boys:
I really sympathize with Michael Gurian.I felt much the same way about the failures of the industrialized education system in the 1950s that he described a couple of decades later. It's set up to fail boys, and has gotten worse over the past several decades as men teachers have been driven out.

3-0 out of 5 stars An OK reference for common problems
I had high hopes for this book but I was a little disappointed when I read through it.I was looking for a comprehensive reference that would give mefairly specific information on common complaints in early childhood.Unfortunately, the book is somewhat vague about most of the problems. For example, I was interested in learning more about reflux in infants and I was able to learn more about reflux in one of my breastfeeding books than in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE reference for new parents.
As a nurse, I highly recommend this book for new parents. It is easy to read and understand for all audiences.I found many answers here that prevented me from calling the pediatrician or advice nurse after hours. It is divided into sections by age so don't let the number of pages intimidate you - keep it by your bed and read a few pages when you have a spare moment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, excellent, excellent...
In my last trimester, it started to dawn on me that I was now an expert on pregnancy (having read every pregnancy book I could get my hands on), but I hadn't the foggiest idea of what to do when we brought the baby home!I started scrambling to find a guide to those stressful first weeks, and I came upon this book after reading through countless others. This is truly the best guide out there. Why?

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Explicit, Detailed and Valuable!
Paget's "How to be a great lover" provides a lot of explicit and detailed instructions, and descriptions. She discussed a broad spectrum of topics from sexually transmitted diseases to oral and manual stimulation. My husband and I are experienced and for us most of the information was not something new. We did learn new things however and it was nice to read a book written by so experienced and genuinely interested in sex woman. We would like to recommend as well scientist Ritz' bestseller "Scientfically guaranteed male multiple orgasms and ultimate sex" because it provides breakthrough information, which made a great difference for us in bed.

5-0 out of 5 stars I liked it
This is a very good book which I liked and recommend to everyone. It contains a lot of information that I am sure you will find interesting and valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars worth reading
I just bought this book a few days ago after reading the positive reviews. It was definitely worth reading! The best part about the book is the tone she uses.It really does come across as girlfriend-to-girlfriend.It's not clinical (which is a turn-off) or condescending in tone - she doesn't act like a sex guru speaking down to the plebian undersexed. She's very encouraging and her main goal is to give you confidence as a lover.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Start to Good Habits
This book was a great help to me as a first time/new mom. I can't begin to see how helpful it was to get the baby into a routine instead of dragging her around and keeping her out to suit my needs. Once you see how happy and rested you can be by following some simple routines it really made a difference. I would highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Advice for New Moms!!
This book was given to me as a gift. When I first glanced through it, I really didn't think it was for me. Then one night my 4 week old son spent a good 2 hours screaming. I looked through the "What to Expect" book and a "Living through the First Year" book and finally, I picked this book up and found a chart on a baby's cries. My husband and I were able to quickly figure out that our son was backed up with good old fashioned gas! She had all sorts of advice on how to relieve him. After that I read the book cover to cover - I used the E.A.S.Y. method and things went smoothly!!! He is now 14 months and still has a great routine! He thrives and always knows what's coming at naptimes, mealtimes and bedtime. This book offers solid advice rooted in common sense. What more could a new mom need?

I highly recommend this book to any parent of a newborn.Since he was my first I had no idea how to get him into a routine. After hearing a few people rave about it, I bought the bookwhen my son was about 6 weeks old & after following E.A.S.Y. he was sleeping through the night at 12 weeks old.I could easily distinguish his cries & could tell when he was tired and needed to sleep. ... My nephew is 21, a college senior, and last week his mother yelled at him because he keeps getting a certain ringtone on his cellphone. She yelled because that ringtone is reserved for the girls he no longer wants to see, but who keep calling him constantly anyway. His mom yelled because she thought he should be honest with them, but he "just couldn't be that mean." He preferred to tell them he was too busy and then just stop calling. And you know what?Very few of them take the hint. They need this book -- stat.If you keep calling, texting and emailing a guy and he never answers or is "too busy," he's not busy, or scared, or confused about his feelings - he's just not that into you.Believe me, Behrendt is onto something. When my nephew wants to date a girl, nothing stops him from seeing her. It's that simple.

Admit it or not, this book speaks the truth. We just need reminding not to settle.Practical, funny, witty and every woman's must-read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Eye opening stuff
This book was very useful and eye opening. In a very honest, fun and frank way, Greg explains there are no mixed messages and that men are not complicated, but terrified to tell a woman directly "you are not the one". It is very useful so that women don't waste time making excuses for these men and move on to find the one guy who is really into them. I would also recommend reading "How to create a Magical Relationship" from Ariel and Shya Kane, which is a very simple and direct guide to have satisfying, honest, fun and magical relationships. The Kanes' approach is gentle and full of wisdom and gives a fresh take on a world that keeps wanting to divide men from women. It also really explains how to keep relationships alive and fully in-love, which is absolutely the next step after he is totally into you!!" ... Have you ever been frustrated with your relationship to your child? Have you ever thought that your child is just being defiant? Maybe you have tried severe punishments and scolding that don't lead to a change in future behavior as you had hoped. Most parents, like my-self experience a children's defiance from time to time, and some experience that defiance 24/7.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tomi Tuel's Review
In the day of my upbringing, my parents had a child rearing handbook they considered omnipotent. Those philosophies are now considered old school. As a product of those old school philosophies I could have cursed them as a child, and now as an adult I sometimes find myself unknowingly reverting to them for lack of a better way.The need for such parental guidance is still ever present.Dr. Bernstein bridges the gaps in our thinking during times of crisis with our own defiant children.By arming us with the tools of love, Dr. Bernstein's teachings help any parent grappling with a defiant child restore the love and maintain the peace. If you have kids or work with them, have this book handy - you're going to need it!10 Days To A Less Defiant Child is the omnipotent handbook for today's modern parent.
5-0 out of 5 stars Deceptive Title?
In my experience, it only took about two to three days to see real results. To be sure, other parents may have more difficult situations. This book is really valuable because it organizes and presents the information in a way that is easy to understand and implement. It addresses the fundamental issues regarding communication and helps a parent gain an appreciation of the child's need to assume their own individuality. The book is not about ensuring absolute obedience; in fact, such a goal is likely to result in defiant behavior. However, if what you ultimately hope to achieve is a solid and mostly harmonious relationship with your children, you should be well served by the advice in this book. You might not end up being able to force your teen-age daughter to wear pink polka-dot corduroy knickers with dark green taffeta tops (or force her not to wear them), but you probably will be able to get her to arrive at school on time and not scream at you when you ask how the homework is coming along. Furthermore, it is better to have a child who perceives you as an understanding ally in life than one who thinks you are another source of frustration or pain. By discussing how to avoid unconstructive behavior on your part, the book's guidance goes a long way to teaching skills that allow you to influence the important aspects ofgrowing up in a positive way. ... Editorial Review

The role of birth partner is a tough one. A birth partner may be expected to help a laboring woman make decisions and help her get through the pain and discomfort of childbirth. During this high-intensity time, the birthpartner--whether father, partner, or friend--needs a book that can give thorough information for studying ahead of time, yet can be easily referenced in an emergency or for quick answers during labor and delivery.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on Labor & Delivery
I've been a working with expectant parents for the last 14 years, 5 of which as a birth doula and childbirth educator. When I meet with a new client, I always ask that they read 'The Birth Partner' along with those who are attending their birth. Childbirth is definitely an area in which knowledge equals power - in this case 'The Birth Partner' is a true powder keg to empower yourself in your childbirth journey. I feel that it is a 'must read' for every expectant family.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you really want to be a PARTNER, this is the book to read!
I can't even count how many times I have checked this book out from the library. It's great to see that it is in it's second edition and still getting great reviews and helping so many people.I read this book from cover to cover when I was pregnant with my first child. My husband wanted to support me in my efforts to give birth naturally but wasn't sure how--and I wasn't sure what to tell him.Lamaze classes didn't really help him to understand his role.He wanted to be more than the pillow holder and breathing coach. After reading this book I was able to tell him exactly what he could do and say that would really help me.As he is not an avid reader, I read and then discussed each section with him. This definitely helped build confidence and trust for both of us.We have since been able to have 4 natural and unmedicated births, which I belive would be nearly impossible without the right kind of support from a labor partner.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE best calendar for families with more than one child
Ok, so I now have my NINETH Family Calendar hanging on the side of the fridge... I've been using them since my younger child was two... and I absolutely could not keep everyone in the family straight without it. It's even better now that my kids are old enough to know to look at their columns to find out what's up for them. I keep a mug of fine Sharpies on top of the fridge to write on it. Woe to anyone who touches Mom's pens without permission!! Love the new stickers... so cute. It's been VERY fun to keep the old ones and be able to look back at who did what when, going back to before preschool! Honestly, my only complaint is that now that the calendar is 18 months, it's much heavier and bulkier. I don't use the first six months of the calendar; I just clip the new year's under the old year until January. Kind of a waste for those of us who are repeat offenders.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you can't get organized with this calendar, you're just hopeless
I happened upon the 2006 Mom's Family Calendar at a book sale and I'm so glad I found it because now I can't live without it.I'm looking forward to using the 2007 version. My mother purchased one for my brother because he has four busy children and he really is hopeless when it comes to organization.Unfortunately his wife had recently passsed away, so giving him a calendar with Mom pre-filled in one of the columns seemed a bit insensitive. That's my only criticism of the product though. For me it is a must have. ... Editorial Review

This is a survival guide for parents who find themselves marooned among volatile and incomprehensible aliens on Planet Teen. Area maps cover the obvious ground--there are chapters on school, sex, suicide, and so on--but it's the title of Chapter 2, "What They Do and Why," that best captures the book's spirit and technique. Anthony Wolf's modus operandi is not so much to make pronouncements about what parents should do, as to explain adolescent behavior in a way that's bound to leave parents with a changed view of the plausible options. Wolf is a clinical psychologist, and his writing is clear--even witty--and he doesn't resort to jargon. The expository text is punctuated with snatches of illustrative dialogue, which serve as concrete examples and help parents learn how to see, anticipate, and avoid "bad strategies." (One key mistake is getting dragged into no-win conflicts instead of having
