5-0 out of 5 stars Everything from endometriosis to donor gametes
Collaboratively written by obstetrician/gynecologist John C. Jarreet and fertility-related stress and management counselor Deidra T. Rausch, The Fertility Guide: A Couples Handbook For When You Want To Have A Baby (More Than Anything Else) is a comprehensive, straightforward and "reader friendly" guide specifically for couples wanting to know the medical facts about the variety of options to improve their chances of successful conception. Covering medical terms in detail, yet written specifically for non-specialist general readers seeking to educate themselves on a complex condition, The Fertility Guide covers everything from endometriosis to donor gametes. The Fertility Guide is superbly presented, authoritative, extensive, and highly recommended reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that keeps its promise to the reader.
John C. Jarrett, M.D. and Deidra T. Rausch, Ph.D. have spent years helping couples with fertility difficulties. They've teamed up to write The Fertility Guide:A Couples Guidebook For When You Want To Have A Baby, a complete and easy-to-understand manual for people with problems becomingpregnant.Their book is unique among fertility books because theydiscuss the emotional aspects of infertility, as well as the medicalaspects.(...)

5-0 out of 5 stars A must to take charge of your infertility
I feel this book arms the reader with theinformation needed in deciding which direction to take once you've found yourself on the path where no hopeful parent wants to be.I love that it validates the many feelings which accompany infertility when society, out of a misguided need to help, often encourages us to squelch these emotions. The book also offersalternatives to "genetic parenting" rather than enforcingtreatment as your only hope of getting on with your life.I found PartTwo:Understanding the Medical Aspects of Infertility, to be aneasy-to-comprehend guide of the workings of the body and a walk-through ofthe various procedures available to assist in your quest for parenthood. It's my opinion that every would-be parent would feel so much more "incontrol", something that is rarely felt in infertility, if they wouldwalk into their doctor's office with this book firmly under their arm. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I Laughed and Cried
I loved the stories and poems in Experiencing Infertility. Some made me laugh, especially the pregnant after infertility diary. Others made me cry.I was especially touched by the two stories of people who dealt withinfertility after cancer treatment.I was also deeply moved by the finalessay in the book, Enduring Losses. Although I have mentioned someof my favorite essays, I really enjoyed all of them. The book wascompelling, compassionate and comprehensive. I encourage anyone goingthrough infertility--or pregnancy after infertility--to read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book
Experiencing Infertility is the most moving, deeply personal and poetic book that I have found about infertility.I liked Ellen Glazer's chapter introductions, all of which are brief, to-the-point and informative, but ILOVED the essays that her contributors wrote. Each one is interesting andtells a compelling story, but a few are true gems.I encourage readers toget this book and go immediately to the following essays: "EnduringLosses" and "You Can Take That to the Bank." As an adoptivemom, I was also deeply touched by "Random Acts of Love."This is a great book to own.I have read some of the essays several timesand have loaned it to my mother and two sisters.Although none of themhave personally experienced infertility, they all found it fascinating andeach seems more sensitive to what I have been through. A great find.

3-0 out of 5 stars An Important Helping Hand
As somebody who is just starting out on the infertility bandwagon, I found the book useful, in mainly in letting me know that there are thousands of people who have grappled with the same whirlwind, and have felt just asalone as I have. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Passing It Forward
Written by infertility patients for infirtility patients, this most excellent resource answers questions not normally addressed by infertility resources in a sympathetic, practical, no-nonsense manner. I've used this book, recommended it to my sister and several friends. We all found the information very helpful. It really clarified the process, making it easier to figure out what our limits were and what we truly wanted to do. The emotional inventory included is invaluable for any couple going through the trying process of creating a family.I particularly appreciated how the various testing procedures were described: everything from what the test was expected to accomplish and how it is conducted, to how the various procedures you'll go through actually feel. This isn't the only good resource out there, but it is easily one of the best.If you're struggling with infirtility and feeling overwhelmed by the whole subject, start your exploration with this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Whining, Negative Outlook
All this book does is cite the negative effects of fertility treatments, including surgery! It points out how horrible certain patients' experiences were, without any positive outlooks. What a horrible waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!!!
Any women or couple starting to experience infertility must read this book!!!!This book was a great source of information for my husband and I when we began our trip down the infertility road.During our doctorvisits, our doctor would ramble of numerous prosedures, surgerys, test andmedications we may have to go through, it would boggle both our minds. We'd go home, look up everything discussed at the appointment in this bookand we knew exactly what to expect from any given procedure or test.Ithelp relieve a lot of the stress we were both experiencing. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars It's NOT What You Do but HOW You Do It!!
Nothing in life is perfect and nothing we do ever matters, from conceing out children in the most natural and "normal" of ways to using any sort of infertility assistance-- what truly matters in the end is the WHYs and the HOWs of everything we do. 1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible INSENSITIVE HORRIBLE book
This is a terrible book. It refers to children by DI as "illegitimate" and compares donor insemination to adultery. Its a terrible book and I don't recommend it to anyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT WHAT HAPPENED NEXT BOOK
How did Elizabeth Noble conceive with a sperm donor she knew but without having sex with him?How did her family feel about it?This is an thought provoking book which not only tells Noble's story but has an interestingchapter on donor offspring and their reactions at learning as adults thatthey have biological fathers who are not the fathers they grew up with. While this is a good book I would also recommend to anyone planning to bythis book to also buy Helping the Stork: The Choices and Challenges ofDonor Insemination by Vercollone.Vercollone's book helps you discuss DIwith your donor offspring so they don't become bitter...which was Noble'sexperience. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Studies Focusing Mostly on the Underweight
This book is meant for people who are 1) thin or underweight and/or exercise too much 2) a medical student or one interested in the mechanics of fertility or 3) Overweight/Obese women looking to understand WHY being overweight/obese is impairing your fertility (BMI > than 27).For the average women who does not fall into these two categories and is looking for insight into her infertility, I would advise this book is not the right one for you.If you are still curious, check it out from your local library (as I did), and you won't be disappointed you spent any money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information, tedious to read
This book lays out a fascinating analysis of the causal relationship between fatness and fertility, and it is undoubtedly a testament to the enduring power of the author's work that so many of the ideas in this book seem quite intuitive to me--I've grown up with these ideas generally accepted. The empirical analysis in the book is first-rate, and I found the population studies illuminating.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clearly, it's NOT true that you can never be too thin!
This fascinating, intelligent book makes for quick reading and lots of thinking.I wish I'd discovered Rose Frisch a long time ago, as she explains some events of puberty that, had I understood them at the time, would have alarmed me far less. This was an encouraging, lively, and absorbing book.Hopefully it will help women struggling with infertilty and body image to get to the bottom of at least one area of potential misunderstanding.I've recommended this book to several friends and will continue to get the word out. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent uplifting book!!!
As a woman who waited until her 30's to start having children, I found this book very uplifting, it satisfied alot of my fears of waiting to get pregnant, and what to expect if you are having trouble conceiving, and alternative methods of fertility therapy.I give this book two thumbs up, it was very helpful to me.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is NOT about Choices, Decisions, Options
The title of this book led me to believe that the book would focus mostly on the pre-conception aspects of motherhood after 35.This was not the case.Four out of six chapters focused on pregnancy, childbirth, andcaring for a new baby.I was disappointed in this book for several otherreasons as well. The two chapters that did deal with the actual decisionto become pregnant and the alternatives available were poorly written andinsensitive to women like myself who are having difficulty conceiving dueto age.I thought this book would offer me some insight into thebiological and emotional aspects of trying to become a mother after the ageof 35.I found the medical facts to be out of date and pregnancy optionsnot thorougly explored (for example, there were only 2 pages on donor eggand one paragraph on adoption). In addition, the book seemed to be writtenfrom the perspective that anyone can get pregnant easily, whether they wantto or not. There were many stories in the first chapter of women in theirlater years who found out they were accidentally pregnant, or suddenlyfound themselves pregnant and were happy because they suddenly felt"older" and "grownup."This is a severe injustice towomen who sincerely desire to become a mother, but are having difficulty. I would not recommend this book to anyone--even those women who have easilyconceived. ... Read more

Editorial Review

With measures to tackle the social issues caused by teen pregnancy being bantered about the halls of Congress like a beach volleyball, it's refreshing to receive some serious, measured thinking on the context and causes of teenage pregnancy. Kristin Luker, a professor of sociology and law at the University of California, Berkeley, and the author ofAbortion and the Politics of Motherhood, presents a book that tracks the history of our near-obsession with the subject. Her central point is that pregnancy is a measuring stick of poverty, not a cause. While there's statistical analysis aplenty, the work comes to life through the words of the young mothers she interviewed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is a very insightful look at "teen" pregnancies and may help destroy many ideas that people have of the "fast" "immature" teen girl pregnant because of her hormonal drive and rebelliousness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Start understanding what's really going on..
If you'republic health professional, a teacher, a social worker, or even a politician, dealing with teen pregnancy at any level, you don't really understand what's going on, unless you've walked the walk, or read Kristin Luker's Dubious Conceptions, Judith Musick's Young, Poor and Pregnant, or Norine Johnson et al's (Eds.) Beyond Appearance: A New Look at Adolescent Girls. If you haven't been in their (adolescent mothers') shoes, but you have the social conscience and sense of social justice to want to help these kids, these three works are, in my view, indispensible reading. If you depend on organizations like The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy for your good ideas, you have really been missing the boat. Come down to earth and discover their real world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book about what we call "teen pregnancy"
Along with Judith Musick's "Young, Poor, and Pregnant," Luker'sbook is a masterpiece shattering beloved myths on all sides of the utterlyphony "teen pregnancy" squabble. ... Read more
