5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!!!!
This is the best book on infertility and its effects on relationships that I've read (and I've read quite a few). It is written by an anthropologist who has struggled with infertility herself and is based on her research. I never expected to find such words of wisdom in a book like this. Empowering, life-affirming, hopeful, and full of love. Every couple who is experiencing infertility should read it. I would also recommend it to infertility doctors and counselors, and social workers working with adoption.2-0 out of 5 stars Healing the Infertile Family
I read this book cover to cover. from the beginning it wasn't grabbing my attention.I was very bored while reading it.It's main focus to me was on older couples, 35 and up, with infertility problems. Completely ignoring the younger reader such as myself. (I'm 24 and have had infertility issues for 4 yrs.)I did like the interviews the author used to express the couples actual feelings, although, my husband and myself didn't seem to relate to a lot of the male perspective and some of the female perspective the author was giving. The title is -Healing the Infertile family:Strengthening your relationship in the search for Parenthood- I don't feel like I learned any new coping techniques,I don't feel any good information on what my husband and myself could do to strengthen our relationship was presented like the title would insinuate. So I rate this book only 2 stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Empty Womb, Aching Heart: Hope and Help for Those Struggling with Infertility
This book has helped me mourn and FINALLY move on from my infertility. It made me realize that my feelings of anger and sadness were normal and it makes it easier to hear that others have experienced the same frustration and inconsolable feelings. It's so important to mourn so that you can move on to other options if that is your plan and I am finally able to do that with the help of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful comfort
I took so much comfort in realizing I was not the only one with the thoughts, emotions, and fears that go along with the infertility struggle. I found myself laughing and crying along with the women (and men) in these stories as I realized they were speaking about what I felt. Such an encouraging book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps one look at the "big" picture
after reading this book, it really helped me to explore many different ways to look at infertility. The best part of this book is that it allows insight into the many emotions that one can have when dealing with infertility by sharing stories of many who live with it daily. It is a spiritual guide as well. The only drawback is because it is centered around faith and spirituality, it only discusses infertility for couples- no mention here at all for those of us who are single and want to have a child but have not been blessed to have found the perfect spouse. Not a book for open-minds and open-hearts, but definitely helpful with the emotional roller coaster ride that is infertilty. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and Educational
This book is the best!I have read and reread it so many times I almost know it by heart.I have lent this book to so many people that I need a new copy!As a woman who has gone through the infertility nightmare and has gained hope by conceiving (and is looking to go through it again).I recommend this book to every woman who faces infertility and is looking for answers. This book gives the insights into the numerous tests that you will face as well as honest personal accounts about how they are (like how a HSG really feels - Ouch!)Thank you to the authors for this guide through the maze of infertility!

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive overview
The book offers a comprehensive overview of issues related to infertility, including medical, psychological, and financial. One shortcoming is that the discussion of age and fertility is too brief. A major strength is the medical discussion, which very clearly explains not only the basics, but also the many tests which may be part of an infertility evaluation. The personal stories and comments are also insightful. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading, unfortunately
It's true that a woman's general health may play a role in her fertility (and certainly in her ability to carry a healthy pregnancy), and that certain medical problems can drastically increase the risk of infertility (untreated polycystic ovary syndrome, STDs).This book might be useful in suggesting some testing that women in their early 30s might do to help them decide how long it might be relatively safe to delay trying to conceive.

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated information
I made the mistake of purchasing his older book called The A.R.T. of making babies updated edition. Do not buy unless your doing a research paper. This book was written in 1998 and the information is outdated. Make sure you purchase the 2005 edition. I wish amazon.com would have made this clearer. I did read it anyways and had the bookbeen filled with updated information it could be informative. I found the "Couple's guide to In Vitro Fertilization a much better book. Having recently gone through the procedure it was right on the money and very easy to read and understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good source of information
My husband and I recently found out that IVF was probably our only hope at having a biological child. We live in an area where IVF is basically non-existent... as is the information that we've received.I wanted to find out everything I could about the IVF process, expenses, etc. This book was an excellent source of information from fertility testing, to the entire IVF process. It also went into depth on new procedures that can be used along with IVF.VERY inforamtive, and I would recommend to anyone craving knowledge about IVF.

5-0 out of 5 stars A WOMAN'S JOURNEY FROM HEARTACHE TO PEACE
This book shares the author's journey of learning to accept the fact that she'll never be able to conceive children. Her story begins in 1988, when her doctor discloses the dreaded news. She said his words became like "a constant, haunting hum in my head, like a song you can't shake -- a song with the power to drive you insane. His voice was inescapable."
5-0 out of 5 stars Journey of Healing
I am absolutely awed by Shannon Woodward's ability to tell this story.A story lived by many, but voiced by far too few.
4-0 out of 5 stars More for those who decide to pursue adoption
In this book, Shannon Woodward basically shares her personal story and struggle with infertility. While I related to many of the feelings she expressed, and found some things helpful in the book, overall I did not identify with most of what she wrote about. Her book largely covers her pursuit of adoption, and the many failed attempts she endured. While I found her stories engaging, I personally have not chosen the adoption route. I have pursued my path more through medical intervention to conceive biological children, and very little was mentioned in her book about this option, mostly because she seemed to have barely pursued it. I do think this is a good book, but I wish that I had been able to get more of a picture of what this book actually covered before I had purchased it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Infertile Couples
This book, along with "Adopting After Infertility" are two of the most helpful books my husband and I have read on infertility. We're undergoing our third and last IVF in the fall, so we're getting ready to close the door on the possibility of a child who is biologically ours.We credit both of these books for helping to keep us emotionally grounded during the process -- there IS life after infertility!4-0 out of 5 stars A Positive Spin on Bad Luck
This is a comforting, positive book for those struggling with infertility. It is often Pollyanna-ish -- the authors suggest "helping" careers such as social work and teaching, pets, gardening and hobbies as substitutes for having children. These can be rewarding things, but having and raising children is another thing altogether, for which there are no substitutes.5-0 out of 5 stars A light at the end of the tunnel...
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! An amazing book to help you survive infertility. After 7 IVF's, several miscarriages and a medical conclusion that what felt impossible, was impossible, this book changed my life. After reading it, I felt as though there was a light at the end of the tunnel. I took control of my life and realized that I could have a rewarding, happy life...I just needed to make the active choice to BE HAPPY! If you feel "stuck", read this book...it will change your perspective on life! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The women in this book are ME
I was browsing through the bookstore and this book caught my eye.I thumbed through it, and could not put it down.I bought it, and read the entire thing in one night.5-0 out of 5 stars It's About Time
It's about time a book on the topic of infertility explored the more emotional aspects of this situation. As men and women, when we are confronted with the possibility of infertility, we are thrown to the scientific wolves and sometimes end up feeling like "road kill." Doctors, labs, medicines and experimental procedures can make us feel like modern day Frankensteins. It was so theraputic for me to read this book. Not merely a scientific forum for informative medical information but more importantly, a bible that helped me move forward emotionally. A must read for anyone going through this experience. Well written and heartfelt. Bravo, Harriet and Debby--thank you so much for sharing your wealth of expertise.

5-0 out of 5 stars -What to Expect When You're Experiencing Infertility : How t
As a professional working for more than 15 years w/ couples experiencing infertility, I have found that the insight offered within this book has greatly enhanced my clinical effectiveness. I have gained sensitivity to the emotional impact of infertitlity at a deeper and more meaningful level. Sadly I became aware that I had overlooked some of the day-to-day experiences of infertility. Experiences that I simply took for granted as a woman who biologically conceived without difficulty. These overlooked experiences were profoundly significant to couples working hard to resolve their infertility. Imagine my surprise when I read the review titled, "There are Better Choices Out There." It appeared that this reader was having a very personal & emotional response to this book, given his or her overly harsh reference to literary merit and the lack of professionalism of its authors.
