5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for everyone, infertile or not!
Dr Toth is a remarkable man. His work and treatment are simple but groundbreaking. In a world where those experiencing infertility are sent hurtling towards high-tech (and high cost) procedures such as IVF, his advice seems almost mundane yet it flies in the face of current medical thinking - fix the cause not the symptom. He believes, and his practice shows, that chronic infections cause many of todays reproductive problems; problems that can often be easily remedied with an extended course of antibiotics. Even more astounding, he purports that infections cause many of the diseases we are facing today - diabetes, heart disease, even some cancers. He talks about how infections can be passed from partner to partner but also from mother to child. The more I read his work and evidence, more convinced I became. As someone who has benefitted tremendously from reproductive medicine but has also seen it fail in a tragic way, I have become convinced that Dr Toth is onto something here. Testing of all couples prior to pregnancy is the only sensible outcome of his work but beyond that, his work has huge implications for the way we manage our overall health and medicine in general. We all should read his book, whether facing infertility or not, and take heed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fertility versus Infertility
This is an important book not only for pre-sexually active teens, but also their parents and/or those to provide them with advice. It is well written, and provides enough clear technical detail to keep the average reader interested even though the topics could be boaring in another context. For those who are sexually active and/or contemplating starting a family the self-assessment chapter combined with the chapter on signs and symtoms are extremely helpful. This is book that clearly provides insight in to the problem of infertility for both the medical professional and the public at large.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! Of critical importance!
I have the utmost respect for Dr. Toth's crucial work which isclearly described in this book. I was referred to Dr. Toth by several women who regained health and achieved successful pregnancies after Dr. Toth treated them for chronic infections not addressed by other physicians.Although I consulted many well-respected NYC specialists for pelvic pain and malaise, only Dr. Toth diagnosed and treated my condition correctly.Despite normal laboratory findings and a history of very few sexual partners, a laparoscopy revealed an active pelvic infection. I referred a friend to Dr. Toth and she delivered a healthy baby after Dr. Toth treated her and her husband for infection. A physician they had consulted previously, had diagnosed genital infection as a probable cause of their inferitlity, yet inadequately treated their condition.Recent research correlates medical deseases such as heart disease with chronic infections.Dr. Toth outlines the connection between medical problems, low-grade infections and reproductive difficulties. Dr. Toth therefore emphasizes the importance of adquately treating genital track infections prior to planning for childbearing.I am using a pen name because of the sensitive nature of this topic.I feel so grateful that I learned of Dr. Toth and and benefited from his work. I was so pleased to see this book as it will likely help a larger number of women and couples be exposed to Dr. Toth's critical findings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good balance of scientific evidence and practical information
As a scientist, it is comforting to know that there are authors out there that know that many people would like to know scientific information without being treated like a specimen. This book gives great scientific citations while also giving practical information and personal stories.I think it is a good balance for this type of book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for those in need.
This was a great book for us.Very easy to read - it had the technical stuff but explained in a very down to earth way.It covered many subjects from IVF, IVF ICSI, donor sperm. All in non-judgmental ways, I gives you the facts of all and lets you decide without steering you one way or the other. It also discusses some of the causes.I thought the books was super and should be required reading for all couples that are in this situation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just the facts, ma'am
I am lucky in having pursued infertility therapy as a client (successfully, thankfully) as well as by being a urologist who treats infertility clients.I read this book to decide if it would be a helpful adjunct to the people I treat.I have decided not to recommend it to my clients.I would sooner have them read Larry Lipshultz's book, technical as it is. 5-0 out of 5 stars A straightforward, down-to-earth "must-read"
Doctors and clinical professors at the UCLA School of Medicine, Arthur L. Wisot and David R. Meldrum have expertly collaborated to create a comprehensive and thoroughly "reader friendly" 360-page introductory guide to In Vitro Fertilization and other assisted reprouction techniques. Intended especially to educate those considering such fertility procedures, Conceptions & Misconceptions covers common causes of infertility, tests that infertile couples seeking treatment need to undergo, the risks and preparations needed for multiple births, alternative treatments for infertility, and much more. A straightforward, down-to-earth "must-read" for any couple seeking information on this often difficult or painful subject.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Book for Assisted Reproduction
Conceptions & Misconception is truly the "must have" book for any couple faced with assisted reproduction. Whether you are just starting out and wondering if you should see your doctor about your difficulties conceiving or whether you have been at it for a while and have seen your fair share of doctors with little to show for your efforts, this book will offer you insight, information, perspective and most importantly, hope.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book!
Reproductive technology fails for 80% of the people who try it, but all you ever read in the press (which relies on the advertising dollars of pharmeceutical companies)are the success stories.Very important reading for anyone considering fertility treatment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Broad but not deep
This book is great at laying out and discussing a variety of issues related to infertility, the complex technologies used to treat it, and the emotions that arise from these things. However, I was continually frustrated while reading this book because I felt that the author did not analyze very well the things she said. She would point out interesting comments made by couples seeking fertility treatment, but then give the same anaytical comments over and over again about the different couples' feelings. Also, I felt she was too biased and critical in her assessment of fertility treatment. It seemed like every couple (indeed, virtually everyone in the book was a married couple, very little representation from anyone else) felt the same way, ultimately -- disillusioned, doubtful about themselves, cynical about the process, and overall disappointed, even angry and bitter. This has not been my own personal experience, and I have a hard time believing that everyone in her large study sample was so dismal. It just wasn't a sophisticated, layered analysis. But it will probably be interesting to non-academics who would like to get a foundation for some of the negatives associated with infertility treatments, and with having problems with infertility. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Everything helps, and it all matters!
To think that getting medical intervention is the only way, when there are things we can do to improve chances is limited thinking.
2-0 out of 5 stars So-So
Some tips for increasing fertility - avoiding tobacco, alcohol, caffeine and stress...hmmm. Well, I'm still waiting for someone i.e., a medical professional, to write a book about why some women who DO smoke cigarettes regularly, drink coffee and consume alcohol on a fairly frequent basis have no problem whatsoever conceiving. I'm more interested in having that mystery solved. Fertility aside, I already know that tobacco, alcohol, caffeine and stress are not good for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars I owe my pregnancy to this book!
I never write book reviews, but I owe the birth of my daughter to the advice given by this book! After 6 years of no contraception, my husband and I finally decided that we were going to REALLY TRY to have a child, so I bought this book, as a starting point to figure out what we--both over 35-- needed to do to get pregnant. In our case, the changes in lifestyle recommended in the book were all we needed; I got pregnant 3 months after putting its advice into practice. This is the perfect book to start with if you want to create a lifestyle that gives you the best chance for getting pregnant, without starting with the infertility drugs. Note that the medical options are also discussed in the book, as well as how much time is reasonable for trying to get pregnant "naturally." Good Luck! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Response to Il Fiore's review
I have read Kate's book. I also worked for her and therefore felt compelled to respond to il fiore's comments. When Kate had her daughter she was married and her husband was making a good living. Shortly thereafter that marriage ended and from that point on Kate struggled as a single parent, living on limited funds, while dealing with a very serious, very active and debilitating disease -lupus. When I went to work with Kate she was opening The Mind Body Fertility Clinic based on Ali Domars work at Harvard because she so wanted to help other women "find their babies" either biologically or thru adoption. Most importantly she wanted to help women learn to take control of their lives again, stop the insanity that infertility creates, save their marriages, stop hating themselves and their lives, and have hope. The tips that she advocates are for women of any economic background - relaxation, diet, meditation, journaling, time with your partner. The program that she started was open to anyone and if the couples could not afford it then Kate would work out a way for them to attend anyway...even if it meant that she lost money. She is an amazing woman and your review was mean spirited. Kate wrote about her experiences so that other women could see that there are options outside of endless medical tests and last time I checked she had received little to no money for all the time and effort she put into writing I Got Pregnant You Can Too. I recommend this book and if you are in LA I recommend attending The Mind Body Fertility Clinic - which is now being run by Dr. Laurel Kline.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let's be fair :)A great place to start.
Some of the lower-rated reviews of this book focus on the author's "privilege."Personally, I didn't see it that way at all.I'm a fairly middle-class woman who doesn't have the freedom (or cash) to jet off to Arizona, but the advice and esecially "life lessons" in this book helped me enormously!Reading this book made me feel like I was getting advice from a big sister who's been through it all.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Do you remember what it was like to laugh ... truly laugh

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks for helping our relationship
I thought I was alone in how much difficulty infertility caused in my relationship with my husband.I now realize that I am not alone and some of Kristen's ideas have helped both my husband and me.I especially liked the part about the mind/body connection.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Author is NOT my Girlfriend...
I read this book early in my own infertility journey. Unfortunately, all this book did for me was SCARE the living daylights out of me. The author encountered some of the "worst-case" scenarios that we all know exist: extreme adverse reaction to Clomid, ectopic pregnancy, etc. Rather than serve as a practical guide to the day-to-day drone of infertility, the book dealt in worst-case scenarios.

5-0 out of 5 stars You must have this book!
This book saved my sanity. It gave me the education I needed to take charge of my own fertility. It explained things that the doctors didn't. It was a source of reference to back up what they did say. Most of all it gave me the confidence to walk away from Doctors that didn't specialize in my needs and to find someone that did. AND every room in my Doctors office had a copy of this book! - Get it - It's worth every cent.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive, valuable, "reader friendly" guide
Now in its third edition, The Couple's Guide To Fertility has been completely revised and updated to represent the latest scientific findings to help infertile couples become parents. Research on genetics, fertility drugs, and the latest minimally invasive surgeries to correct infertility problems are all discussed in great depth, but with attention to lay audiences. A comprehensive, valuable, "reader friendly" guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT "BEGINNERS' BIBLE" FOR NEWCOMERS TOINFERTILITY
A person who is just getting his feet wet in the frightening and confusing world of infertility, obviously finds himself overwhelmed. The medical jargon today, all those acronym -- GIFT, ZIFT, IUI, PCT, BBT, LH, FSH, HCG,HSG, IVF, not to mention PROST, TOAST, SUZI, FREDI, etc. can just make yourmind spin. There are many difficult moral decisions to make as well. Dr.Goldstien's book is a perfect "beginners' bible" to infertility. It explains every facet of the experience in great detail, and patientsbecome better medical consumers as a result. In addition, Dr. Goldstien isthe #1 recommended urologist in New York City, and is widely used by theJewish community in N.Y. He is very knowledgeable and sensitive to theneeds of the Jewish community and the restrictions they haveconcerningmale infertility. Recommended reading for everyone -- whether you want toseek help, you are in the thick of being helped, or are almost beyondhelp..... This book has a lot of good info. It has a lot of straight to the point facts and numbers. If you worry a lot like me this book will give you good info but don't take the statistics to heart. It does cover a lot of areas of concern and things you wonder about when you and your partner are considering having a baby. Things to do things to not to and how to prepare your body for pregnancy.

This is an extraordinary book. Every woman should own a copy. I still don't understand why we are not taught about our own bodies since childhood. If this was the case there wouldn't be so many unplanned pregnancies. Not only that but we wouldn't have to put harsh chemicals into our bodies to avoid pregnancy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Questionable scientific merit on some subtopics
While the author provides a good, concise overview of NFP techniques, she makes some assertions that are not supported by scientific evidence. For example:

5-0 out of 5 stars Comforting and informative... a MUST HAVE
I am so glad I happened upon this book! The personal experiences of Sandra, the expertise of Dr. Bill, and the spiritual issues addressed in this book have been an invaluable resource to my husband and me as we have struggled through the difficulties of infertility. This book is a terrific guide to anyone going through infertility themselves or any lay person or clergy helping a couple that is struggling. Rarely does one find a book that balances medical terminology and its great detail with the emotional and spiritual aspects of the patients' experience, but this book does. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone that is beginning the journey of infertility as it clearly gives medical information. More important to me, though, was the biblical content that reminds us that we are NOT alone through this process, that God is still God, and that the emotional roller coaster is a normal thing. Not to mention the chapter that deals with handling well-intentioned advice... great content there, too! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Good resource
Very good resource if you are considering the ethical implications of IVF and infertility treatments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical information with heart
Right around this time of year, sermons about Mother's Day and the beauty of parenthood bring grief to those experiencing the hellish ride of infertility. Though I have not personally experienced this, I have walked with several friends that have. This book was invaluable in helping me understand the medical, spiritual and emotional issues facing infertile couples. Glahn's personal story is woven throughout, giving the reader glimpses into the pain of infertility. Cutrer offers the reader practical and sound medical advice, gleaned from years and years of treating infertile couples. Both grapple with theological questions like "Is infertility a curse from God?" and "Why did God create sex?" Perhaps the most helpful chapter detailed the well-intentioned (but painful) things people say: Just relax. You can have my children for a weekend. If you adopt, you'll conceive. Just trust God. The latter half of the book deals with the ethics of medical intervention in an honest, non-alarmist way. If you are looking for an infertility manual with heart, pick up this book. If you are longing to love a friend or family member through infertility's minefield, read it for understanding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book before embarking on infertility treatment
This book is one of the only sources--in any media--that presents unbiased information about fertility treatments.Next time you look at a website that purports to offer "education" about infertility, scan the ads that support the website. You'll find the major pharmeceutical companies that Turiel covers in her book are funding your "education."5-0 out of 5 stars Read This Book First!
I would recommend reading this book first before going to a fertility clinic.I am undergoing fertility treatment and have therefore looked at several books on fertility and none of them tell you the truth like this book does.At the clinics, very little was explained to me and the doctors seemed eager to prescribe drugs without explaining the risks of multiple pregnancies and cancer.Basically, this book explains that fertility treatments are experimental and that the long term effects may be harmful, i.e. the risks may outweigh the benefits. So a couple considering fertility treatment should be well-informed and the best place to begin is this excellent, well-written and informative book.

2-0 out of 5 stars I think I'll donate it to the wood stove this winter!
Well - this is the first book about Infertility that I have ever purchased. And if more Infertility books are like this- I don't want 'em. It has made it hard for me to want to put any more money into buying a new infertility book. I just felt like the author was very negative toward the infertility specialist. Its a total "bash my doctor book- read all medical journals ever written because your just a guinea pig". Not the type of positive material I want in my home. If I could return it I would! I think I'll donate it to the wood stove this winter. It was too long it didn't keep my interest. I am undergoing infertility treatment and it just didn't seem very helpful!!! I mean lady quit whining about your mothers infertility treatment~ the doctors did the best they knew at the time and you are the miracle from there hard work! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Making a Bad Situation Worse
Anyone who is interested in reading this book is likely faced with some pretty tough decisions. I would not suggest buying this book. It is written with a very one-sided point of view. The author includes only "proof" that supports her opinions.

5-0 out of 5 stars donor conception
I found this book the best I had ever read regarding donor conception. It covered so many of the issues that I needed to think about such as why we should tell our children the truth about their conception and what we will need to get for them in the way of information about their donor.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Out of Date
This book is horribly out of date, vague and poorly edited.I found a few pieces of information helpful but not much.I will certainly look for a more current book this time around. Many of the examples refer to California and are, therefore, very misleading. You'd be better off with internet research.

4-0 out of 5 stars A surrogacy must have!
A Matter of Trust by Gail Dutton is a "must have" for anyone considering surrogacy of any type. It not only gives the reader pointers on expenses, contracts, and logistics, it also covers the emotional aspect of infertility and the hopes involved in conceiving a baby. It is written in a caring, knowledgable manner without a lot of medical jargon. It also has numerous resources for individuals seeking information on surrogacy. Before you sign anything, read this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book, a gift from a gifted writer, you will love it
I have registered with Amazon just to be able to review this fabulous book."Baby B" is the story of one couple's struggle with infertility. Ultimately, though, it is a unique and wonderful love story."Baby B" is an incredible read on so many levels. While the story is compelling, it is the writing that kept me hooked. The author is able to convey deeply felt and very private emotions just beautifully. That would be enough, more than enough, but he does this with rare and generous introspection, mingled with a terrific sense of humor. This is not an "infertility book", it is a great book, a treat for everyone!
5-0 out of 5 stars The IVF Spousal Primer
When a substantial part of Baby B was published in the New Yorker in June of 2002, my wife went off to the hammock for an uninterrupted read. When she returned, she simply set the magazine down beside me as if to tell me she had just been primed on how to be the perfect spouse. The timing was impeccable; I was about to undergo the first of 4 IVF cycles in Boston, and Baby B gave me an idea of what I'd be in for, from injections to bed rest. Baby B is particularly engaging because it is written from the support partner's point of view; a departure from most infertility or birthing sagas that focus on the psychology of the birth mother. There are tender moments-such as the women in the waiting room eager to help those with children, because they anticipate what a child-so painfully absent from their own lives-would want or need. Ryan is also well versed in the significance of a high FSH, and how devastating it is when day three labs exclude a couple from IVF.Read more
