5-0 out of 5 stars fascinating discussion of conception through donated eggs
This isn't so much a book about "Motherhood Late In Life" as it is about conception using donor eggs.As a 40+ woman pregnant for the first time (through traditional methods), I picked up this book after my first OB visit, thinking it would provide a good overview of some of the issues I might face.At the time, I didn't realize that the book was specifically about ART (assisted reproductive technology) and pregnancies through donated eggs; I assumed it was just about being an older mom.Nonetheless, once I started reading, I couldn't put the book down.It provides much more detail about the biology of conception than do any of the traditional pregnancy books.Juxtaposed with the detailed biology lessons are installments in the story of Sarah & Joe, an older (Sarah is 48; Joe is younger) couple that opts for donor egg use after years of more traditional fertility treaments. In telling the story of Sarah & Joe, the authors address the ethical issues of pregnancy in post-menopausal women in what struck me as a balanced, compassionate, and very thoughtul manner. In the Sarah/Joe story, they discuss the response Sarah & Joe elicit from family members, friends, Sarah's sister, Sarah's adult daughter from a previous relationship.Let's face it -- not everyone is going to be congratulatory & rushing to hold a baby shower for a 50 year old pregnant woman -- or a lesbian or single woman for that matter; nor do all folks embrace the idea of creating an embryo in a test tube rather than accepting whatever God apparently had in mind. And I think it would make a typical adult women a little put off to learn her mother (and her children's grandmother) was using a donor egg to become prenant again.Paulson & Sachs deal with the questions and challenges that women choosing egg donation (or even pregnancy later in life or under other non-traditional circumstances) may face, and their treatment is even-handed -- realistic, not pedantic or preachy, not utopian.I think this would be essential reading for anyone considering assistance in reproduction, especially egg donation. It would also be helpful for the friends and families of women who have elected to use donor eggs.

4-0 out of 5 stars An important aspect of the donor egg cycle was not discussed
A donor egg cycle may include the medication, Lupron. Weeks of Lupron therapy puts one in a hormonal different state. With supressed natural hormones, one is barely able to function. The hot flashes and headaches can be debilitating. Dr. Paulson does not address the issues of 1) physical symptoms that occur with supression of one's natural hormones and 2) how to deal with those physical symptoms. Although the book is generally informative, I wonder what other critical information may have been left out of the book.I bought this book because I was searching for answers while undergoing a donor egg cycle. After failed first fresh embryo transfer, I am "downregulatng" for a frozen embryo transfer.
5-0 out of 5 stars An instructive book, written with compassion and respect.
An instructive book about assisted reproduction in the postmenoupausal years, written with great compassion and respect for the couples contemplating such a decision.Paulson and Sachs are obviously attuned toall of the emotional and ethical, as well as practical issues, that enterinto such a decision. As a clinical discourse on post-menopausal pregnancyissues it is first rate.As the journey of a fictious woman who must dealwith all of the complexities of making such a decision it is an emotionaland compelling story. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great look at the big and little issues with infertility treatment...
When I was undergoing fertility treatment with my first child, I didn't have a comprehensive resource to turn to for both the big, emotional issues, and the smaller, detail-oriented issues (like what to do with all the paperwork!) I could have really benefited from this book, and am glad it's now available for other women undergoing infertility treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A complete guide to overcoming the inevitable hardships that dealing with infertility
In Riding The Infertility Roller Coaster: A Guide To Educate And Inspire, Iris Waichler draws upon her years of experience as a medical social worker to address the difficult emotional and physical health issues surrounding issue of infertility. Deftly providing readers through a sensitive understanding of the variety of infertility causes affecting men and women, Riding The Infertility Roller Coaster covers the issues of menopause, disclosure infertility and conception, parenting after infertility, how to find a doctor or lawyer, the psychology of infertility treatment, becoming a couple again, and the choice of a childless marriage. Riding The Infertility Roller Coaster is very strongly recommended for couples searching for a comprehensive grasp of infertility issues and is a complete guide to overcoming the inevitable hardships that dealing with infertility will inevitably encumber.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Insightful Look at Infertility
'Riding the Infertility Roller Coaster' is a book that speaks not only to those directly affected by infertility, but to those of us who have family members and friends going through the highly emotional experience of treatment, high expectations, and a less than guaranteed outcome.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book covers the interesting in contemp ethics
The best part of this book is in the last few chapters or so when Stout comments on the work of Alasdair MacIntyre and Richard Rorty.Stout paints himself as a "sensible" Rortian but adopts the conceptual framework of chapters 13 & 14 of MacIntyre's _After Virtue_.This is a very interesting amalgamation indeed and well-worthy of its characterization as "bricolage."One of the most interesting things Stout does with MacIntyre is to apply M's virtue ethic concepts (tradition, practice internal goods, etc.) to medical ethics.Since virtue ethics is unquestionably one of the most promising strands of contemporary moral philosophy, and because applied ethics have been dominated by Consequentialists and Kantians to this point, Stout's suggestions here cannot be but intriguing. The opening chapter where Stout categorizes types of relativism and explains his own position is also helpful. The chapters on moral abomination and James Gustafson do not cohere well with the rest of the book. The stuff about why we view things as abominable is good food for thought but doesn't seem truly apropos. In the Gustafson chapter, Stout appears to correctly identify Gustafson's views as theism with the theism taken away. But if this is true, why would this material prove interesting to the theist or the atheist? The ideas in this chapter certainly did not prove interesting to me.It would be well-skipped.But all in all, this book is worth reading, if selectively. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Harvard Study
Harvard did a study that prayer and meditation improves the prognosis and coping of at least half the people in studies from heart, hypertension, to cancer and you name it, there is a study that belief makes a difference. Now, I wrote a book and it is also about spirituality. So when I say look at this book plese, by Ty Canady, I am not whistling Dixie!
1-0 out of 5 stars HOLY OVERKILL BIBLE THUMPERS!
OK.I tried to be flexible getting into this book, but I don't know about the whole preaching part of it.What a waste of money.Glad I got mine used.I plan to sell mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely What I Needed!!!
I read reviews of those who were disappointed by the Christian overtone of the book and still decided to give the book a try. This book was awesome!!! I too contacted the author after reading the book. Her book is very inspiring and is what I needed. She unlike several of the infertility book author has a child after 10 years of infertility and is pregnany with her second child. She has gone through alot of the things I have gone through and is living proof that GOD will bless you with a child...not facts from some infertility doctor. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who SERIOUSLY wants to overcome infertility and all the challenges that come with it, be blessed with a Child versus tons of factual informational that will get you nothing but frustration. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Prayer studies
Meditations or prayers are very helpful for people with the stress of infertility. My website has changed to a blog I change more than weekly. I have this book on the blog because it meant something to me. There are so few people out there who understand. fertileprayers/blogspot.com for a whole heap of links!

5-0 out of 5 stars How many meditations are there for the infertile?
There are only three I know of!This is the first I saw, and then I wrote one. See my website where this is also linked, www.fertilityfair.com to learn more.
2-0 out of 5 stars For heterosexuals in the very early stages of infertility
This book would be appropriate for heterosexual couples who are still trying to conceive and have not yet seen a doctor about it. Its an extremely simple book and not for the seriously infertile. THe book also never addresses the possibility that a woman may be trying to conceive a child without a man in her life or with another woman. A good book if your sad that you didnt get a positive on a home pregnancy test after your first cycle of trying. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't refer to a specialist? Use this book!
When managed care makes it impossible to refer a client to someone who specializes in infertility, here is the book that will make you feel confident about your work. And when you don't have time to read a whole book at once, here is the book that allows you to choose the chapters you need when you need them. The impressive array of interdisciplinary experts follow the same format in each chapter, making cross-references for the reader very easy. This book is truly comprehensive, including topics such as "Special Populations" and "Adoption after Infertility", along with the practical guidelines we all want but which are often lost amidst theory and statistics in other books. The appendices and resource section are especially impressive. There are questionnaires, guidelines, consent forms, and a record-keeping form. The resources section has over 20 pages ofdouble-column entries. The authors have organized a stunning amount of information in a way that is useful to clinicians new to infertility issues and to those with experience who want to learn more

3-0 out of 5 stars Suitable for teething
Elaine Tyler May's "Barren in the Promised Land: Childless Americans and the Pursuit of Happiness" fills an important gap in American social history. Through the use of myriad sources--largely secondary sources but also a collection of more than 500 letters sent to the author by voluntarily and involuntarily childless people--May concludes that the issue of reproduction and the social, economic, and political responses to it changed over time. The author decided to explore the topic after witnessing the public spectacle of the "Baby M" case, in which a surrogate mother hired by an infertile couple to bear their child chose to keep the baby instead of relinquishing custody as required by prior arrangement. Media reports on the case presented surrogate motherhood as a recent phenomenon, a claim May found to be erroneous upon further investigation. The press also presented infertility as a recently discovered problem, another claim the author easily refuted. It was how the media framed the Baby M case that interested the author the most, namely how public and private life in America interacts regarding the issue of childbearing. Reproduction as a private activity and its importance, or perceived importance, in the public sphere forms a central component of the book's structural framework.
4-0 out of 5 stars good ideas
Tyler May's book does a good job tracing the history of childlessness in the US from colonial times to the present.I wish she had dedicated more of the book to those who are childfree by choice.Much of the second part of the book dealt with those who experienced infertility problems, rather than voluntary childfree status.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, thoroughly-researched book!
Hooray for Elaine Tyler May!This is a very well researched cultural study of infertility. It will be particularly helpful to those who desire to be parents or to those who are parents after a long struggle with infertility. As an infertile woman in the United States, I was empowered by seeing so clearly how I fit into the history of the country.Perhaps a detailed academic study is not everyone's idea of fun reading, but I was enthralled.I could not put this book down and read it cover to cover, questioning constantly how my education could have had so many obvious, women-centered omissions.I count few books as life-changing but, for me, this is one of them. ...
