5-0 out of 5 stars Step Into the Children's Shoes
What a powerful and much-needed resource for stepfamilies! So many stepfamily issues can be prevented or solved if the adults involved will do their best to "Step Into the Children's Shoes." Many thanks to Susan Philips for her work in bringing this important book to life. As much as I try to step into all my children's shoes and remain sensitive to their feelings on this complicated stepfamily journey, her book opened my eyes further and gave me new insights. What a gift that through Stepchildren Speak we can learn from the voices of grown-up stepchildren who have shared their stories, their struggles, their triumphs and their advice, so that we might all be better parents and stepparents NOW.
4-0 out of 5 stars What Stepchildren Really Think
If you've ever wondered what stepchildren truly think about their experiences growing up in a stepfamily, then you need to check out Stepchildren Speak: Ten Grown-Up Stepchildren Teach Us How to Build Healthy Stepfamilies. Author Susan Phillips profiles ten people in their late twenties and early thirties who grew up in stepfamilies. The interviewees describe how it feels to juggle in between households and to navigate homes with different values. This book does not spare any punches - it looks at stepfamilies with honesty - in both their bad and good aspects. In some cases the interviewees describe selfish and even abusive behavior from their guardians. In others they talk about positive relationships with siblings and parental figures, the merits of learning how to accept other people's differences, and talents they discovered because of the influence of a stepparent. Drawing on their own experiences, the interviewees offer advice to stepparents and stepchildren.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stepchildren speak
Stepchildren Speak competently answers a grave need of our families today.Straight "from the horse's mouth," so to speak, this book provides an intimate, caring view into those who have walked this path -- and survived.A "must read" for anyone contemplating marriage to one with children.

Anger and hurt tend to figure strongly in divorce, hand-in-hand with resentment, sadness, and fear about your future. And more often than not, these emotional woes all coalesce under the banner of money. Nolo Press is known for its thorough research and user-friendly approach to legal matters, and its book on

5-0 out of 5 stars Take it from me, this is the best book
All the dueling reviews below would have you wonder about the quality of both "Divorce and Money" books, so as an experiment I got both. It's pretty clear that this book (Nolo's) is the better one, hands down. The difference was evident in just minutes. Everything's presented in easy to read verbiage, the charts are easy to use, and the forms and checklists were really handy. Helped me and my ex make the split easier than I expected, frankly. Thank you for this book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My new favorite book!
Okay I might be exagerating but I did love this book. A friend recommended it after my husband and I decide to "part ways." I accidently picked up the other book with the same title and was not so thrilled with all the Get A Attorney advice, but then I realized my mistake and got this version -- it's SO helpful. It almost took me by the hand and showed me how to be less emotional than I would be when making decisions affecting how to split our property and bills up, and how to figure out child support.

1-0 out of 5 stars My eyes glazed over.........FELT LIKE I WAS IN LATIN CLASS!!
Read both books and all the reviews of 2 books with basically the same name and if you want more information in a MUCH MORE user friendly, readable (in English) format at 1/2 the price buy the other book by Smith, Divorce and Money Everything you need to know.I read a review that the Smith book just wants you to hire expensive lawyers.NOTHING could be further from the truth. No matter what, you need a lawyer and this book tells you the same thing. It doesn't mean you have to be stupid! As a normal, middle class guy with a college education and MY OWN BUSINESS this book makes you feel like you are in Latin Class again.Do your self a favor and not only buy Smith's book on Money get her book on Children.......you will save lots of time and stress. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars "Divorce does not destroy families" is an illogical sentence
The title of this book:"What Grown Children Have to Say About Their Parents' Divorce" is wrong. This book is written for Divorced Parents so that they can feel ok about tearing their families apart. She says that Wallerstein's studies are innaccurate because they involve families from Marin County, CA where everyone evidentally is mentally ill.Although she lives in California herself, Ahrons' study involves a small amount of participants from the Mid-West, obviously her idea of a "normal community."As a Californian I resent that and I hope she retires soon and moves back to wherever the hell she thinks the people are normal and nice.
2-0 out of 5 stars Agenda science
Sociologists are normally very meticulous about how they design and conduct surveys and interviews.I found the questions the author posed to be unclear and subject to criticism, or to alternative interpretation. The individual quotations from adults who experienced divorce as a child have a complex underpinning that deserves further analysis:I suspect that many of these respondents are synthesizing an experience, sort of "making the best of a bad history."In any case, I don't think this book does more than try to substantiate further the theory of good divorce by interpreting grown children's responses to the best advantage of that theory. Not convincing.

This was a great book, well-researched and living proof kids can survive and thrive after divorce! It's great to hear what the kids have to say about things 20 yrs later. 4-0 out of 5 stars A gift of healing!
A poem, written when the author was 18, starts the book by describing her parents' divorce as resembling an earthquake, rumbling with rage, anger and guilt that have been festering for a long time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!
Jen just spoke at my church this morning.I have not read the book yet, though and intend on doing so shortly.Jen spoke about how she dealt with the pain and how her it is important for parents to understand that divorce is not a closed subject. It effects children for years and decades to come. She touched on the subject about how important it is for those children to see healthy marriage models as their own view may be broken and distorted.Jen was a wonderful speaker and her growth as a christian showed as she spoke about her parents divorce at the age of 6 and her parents remarriages.Definently recomended

This book surveys a lot of research on joint and sole custody and gives the reasons why children do better when they have both of their parents in their lives. There is enough material in here for any parent to know whatto say to his/her lawyer or to the judge as to why he/she wants jointcustody. There is also ample information in this book to enable parents todraw up shared parenting agreements. There is also an index of the custodylaws in all 50 states, and an index of mediation statutes and practices inall 50 states. A terrific book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good addition to the practical clinical library.
This is a clever and useful book to help clinicians and divorcing clients and couples alike. It can be used even before a divorce, if a couple or individual client is considering separation, but is mostly useful during the many stages that follow the break-up. It is a book and therapeutic tool to be used during the life of the post-divorce cycle, from divorce to final "recovery" from the divorce, and filled with ideas, practical information about the emotional process of the divorce, and strong writing exercises that can help clients better understand their emotional and practical needs, and control the negative fall-out that can often occur following a divorce. It can also help the couples therapist figure out how to best assess and help. Good addition for the library of marriage and couples therapists, and other therapists who work with divorce. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just Another Marriage Book
As a marriage seminar speaker, I am always on the lookout for fresh approaches to the topic of marriage. BHOH is not just another marraige book. It is a close friend with love and compassion for the heartbroken, it is the trusted mentor with wisdom for the struggling-to-hold-it-together, and it is the voice of experieince tenderly calling you to take one more step of faith. There are no pat answers here, no quick and easy solutions. Whether you are hurting in your own marriage, or need that "I'm here and I care about you" gift for a friend who is hurting, I highly recommend Broken Heart on Hold. I will at my marriage seminars and I'm certain it will soon become a favorite of marraige counselors everywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid and encompassing
I had one of these authors for two classes in seminary and he was always informative and provoking. This book is an exhaustive, for the average person, biblical treatment of the subjects of marriage and family. Anyone who works with families and children should have this book, and will use it time and time again. I have worked it into parenting classes, and while it may be a little on the thick side for a new Christian it lends itself nicely to borrowing ideas and material to give a more shallow curriculum some meat. Get a few copies to give away during counseling and classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for this subject available
At a time of crisis in marriages and in family relationships, this refreshing and thought provoking book is one of very few that examines and tackles what the Bible has to say about marriage, family and other related subjects. There are ethical discussions on reproductive health and rights, and a discussion on the role of women in society. It may change your views on birth control and reproduction as Dr. Kstenberger addresses "how to think GOD'S way." It honestly discusses Jesus' teachings on homosexuality, the gift of singleness, celibacy, parenting, and divorce and remarriage. The ideas are not only for married men and women, but for all of us! They offer practical advice on the issue of purity, even for those who consider themselves anything but pure!

1-0 out of 5 stars Rabbis and other clergy should be on the side of marriage!
This book inspired my wife to divorce. She did not want to go to counselling, she did not want to attempt to work out our problems.I spoke with this Rabbi and he readily dispenses the advice to divorce. He totally glosses over the trauma it brings to children with "they will be all right" and let me tell you -- they are NOT all right.Even if they do recover, that is like making the arguement that since kids recover from broken arms fairly quickly and easily that it is ok to break their arms!
5-0 out of 5 stars Advice from a Rabbi that lives in the real world
In "Divorce is a Mitzvah" Rabbi Perry Netter takes the reader through a Jewish perspective of divorce.A mitzvah is defined as a response to the voice of God that commands us to behave in a particular way. While Jewish scholars have many writings on the importance and symbolic significance of marriage and being an ideal couple, there is a dearth of writings concerning divorce.5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Reviews!

3-0 out of 5 stars Advice for difficult times
In this book, dozens of women tell their breakup stories with poignancy and wit, giving the reader not just the insight about thoughts and feelings, but some great suggestions about what to do to heal, to grow, and to move on.The authors got the idea for this book when both of them, within six months of each other, ended significant relationships.Watrous and Honeychurch do not claim to be experts, at least not the kind with credentials and degrees. But they have suffered through traumatic separations and describe themselves simply as "women's issues freelance writers who have recently rebuilt their lives after difficult breakups"; both live in the San Francisco Bay area.
4-0 out of 5 stars Its one of the few breakup books with lots of content
There are a ton of breakup books, heck it is almost its own genre. This book, while not written by pyschologists does have some worthwhile material in it.The book is unique because it also has referrences to same sex relationships. The book incorporates many aspects of a breakup and the aftermath.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I ordered this book after my girlfriend and I broke up in a difficult situation. This book was so wonderful, it kept me sane, and reminded me to trust myself. It was a comfort during the ground zero stage, and later allowed a sigh of relief, as life came out of that stage. All along the way it was like having other women to associate how you were feeling with, and it was a great source of comfort, after the support of a partner was lost. I would reccomend this book to every woman, even before a breakup, so that they are always prepared!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for Reconciliation
Everyone married or to-be-married should read this book. Finally Christian based, excellent advise for a troubled marriage.I got excited, could relate, cried, felt overwelmed, and found hope in this book.It is the best advise I have read on honoring my marriage covenant (besides the Bible) in the past year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped my marriage
I saw Dr. Linda on television several times and then saw that Dr. Laura endorsed her book. I was intrigued and struggling in my own marriage. So I bought her new book and was so thankful I did. Dr. Linda not only gives helpful advice on how to strengthen marriage but she addresses the way we think about marriage. After reading her book, I realized how much my thoughts influenced my marital behavior. This revelation has literally saved my marraige in that I was thinking divorce. Now I am applying her ideas and seeing my marriage turn around for the better. Just practicing the Five to One Rule has helped. I have begun to Divorce Proof My Marriage! Donna in Carol Stream, IL.

Dr. Linda has written a couple of good books. This one is AMAZING! I've never read anything like this one.She takes you down a familiar path (no matter what yourmarital status: newlywed, married, divorced, remarried) ...it has to be familiar because she tells so many real-life stories from 20 some years of therapy. She hits us all!I saw myself and my spouse onnearly every page. This is going to be one of those books people buy, read, and then buy another for their "friend" who's going through problems. Make room at the top of the BEST SELLER charts. Here comes Dr.Linda. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ms. Covington covers a lot
Yes a woman named Lee wrote this book. She was on the radio talking about it.I had thought it was a man.My ignorance.I am the first to admit that divorce is horrible but sometimes necessary.Ask any loving man that has a self absorbed wife.Men get the short end of the stick in divorce and this is the one book you will find that addresses how you can get out with more than just the shirt on your back which she (and I mean her lawyer not her) will still try to get.The main thing is planning. If you plan ahead you will make divorce as painless for you as possible. If you are a woman reading this and think god how could someone write about this, take a look at the number of books written on the reverse side that show how to squeeze a man until he cries like a choir boy.Ms. Covington does say that you may have to pay and in some cases you should pay but the lawyers are the ones that will pressure your dear wife to nail you for everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yess! You gonna need this book.
Get the book before your wife had put her hands on it all. You gonna need all advice you can get. You may save on a lawyer as well by reading it ahead! And on the doctor too.. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you've recently lost your love, this is the book for you.
This book is fantastic! I bought the book when i was still in shock from my break-up and i used it after i had gone through the hardcore mourning period. I was confused for days, forgetting things, crying all the time, and then i just decided to try out the book.I quickly gained clarity and although i'm still sad, i've moved to a new place where i'm walking MY path, and feel lie i've got some control back on my "new" life without my ex.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this first.
There's a lot of important advice within these pages, event if the contributors don't always agree. It's good to have several perspectives on important issues! The book is an easy read, but doesn't stint on facing difficult questions. This isn't all from the female standpoint. There are many male contributors, too, which rounds out the opinions.
