Editorial Review

Go ahead and laugh at the title of this book, but admit it--do you know what a cytomegalovirus is, or how to get rid of one? (It's a little-known sexually-transmitted disease, and there's no known cure.) Dr. Ruth Westheimer has written a valuable reference for those who think they know it all--and for those who admit they know nothing. Westheimer covers male and female anatomy, masturbation, birth control, and the ups and downs of orgasms, along with many other very sensitive subjects--such as how to come out when you're married and have children. For parents who are having trouble talking with their teens about sex, this book could break the ice. It's especially worthy reading--for young and old alike--for Westheimer's candid discussions of the often-ignored emotional and psychological aspects of sexuality, from the effects of losing one's virginity to having cybersex to handling premature ejaculation and other sexual problems. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
This book is very clear and understandable.Everything you ever wanted to know about sex but were afraid to ask.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Many Blurry Pictures
This thing has caused a little rift between Wanda and me. She's not really the adventurous type. I, however, love to let my hair down and go hog wild. Actually, I try to keep my hair up in its ponytail when I can. (been told it makes me look like a much older, fatter Richie Sambora) I guess I'm just what some might call a free spirit. Me and the wife are a little mismatched in this sense, but we stay together for the sake of the girls. (3 more years)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best on communication ever
This book is the best on communication I have ever read!It has a thorough understanding of the problems of communication and provides a most practical approach to enhancing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are ready to giveup on your marriage, READ THIS FIRST!
Quite seriously, this book is amazing.Attend a workshop if you can or take a class that examples the ideas.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book
Its been a little while since I read this book, but I recommend it to all that might benefit from it. Being a psychologist, I may have a bit better insight into relationships than most, but alas, my own marriage did come to an untimely ending.Nevertheless, I'd encourage all couples (both members) to give this book a read...who knows, it just might save your marriage (no guarantees though)...

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Introduction
This simple, sensitive book is a wonderful introduction to those new to therapy and/or exploring their childhood histories of abuse. It is written for people of all backgrounds and thus is accessible to most. I've probably referred well over a hundred people to this book at some point in their therapy. Reactions have included "It doesn't apply to me", but were mostly along the lines of "I couldn't put it down - I kept reading and re-reading it." The beauty and power of it lies in it's simplicity. It's almost impossible to get lost in it intellectually - you have the space to "get it" emotionally.

2-0 out of 5 stars Outgrowing But Up-growing
I thought it was a little immature. Not for older readers. It's for young teens to sit around and read to understand their "so-called" feelings about what they have experienced in the recent past. Or a older teen that just remember about a past experienced about at the ages of 4-6. Not for prelonged abuse survivors.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good read--but a bit short
This is a simple read to get a survivor physical, emotional, or sexual abuse started. I found it a bit lacking in depth--perhaps because it is so short--and I did not care for the illustrations. Again, recommended as a good starting point. For a more in-depth examination of this subject, I found Miss America By Day by Marilyn VanDerber to be extremely compelling. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars God's Vehicle To Recovery
Aloha.I have been using this book for over ten years as a tool in helping people to recover from their brokenness and draw closer to the God.The Lord uses the class, of which I teach using this text "Growing Through Divorce", as a vehicle to draw people to Him.To let them understand how God is more interested in their relationship with Him, then He is about their brokenness. Not that He doesn't care about their despair; through their adversities He brings them closer to Him.Going through the book, praying, reading scriptures and having open and honest communication with the group has helped hundreds of people. They have become stronger in their walk with the Lord Jesus Christ, and a high percentage of them are actively involved in some kind of ministry. Some become leaders within the group and are co-leaders, and attend leadershp classes along with me. The results have been tremendous.People are healthier, happier, stronger-mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually and financially.Yes, people have and continue to "Grow Through Divorce".This book is a "must" for you who are serious about recovering from the devastation of a broken relationship.God Bless You.

4-0 out of 5 stars Growing Through Divorce is great conversation starter
Our HOPE...a ministry for divorced women at church is using "Growing Through Divorce" as a conversation starter for our small group and it is working. The topical chapters are designed to encourage us to start talking in a positive, forward moving direction. The "working guide" at the back of the book offers encouraging Christian reflections that are healing for those of us who are/have experienced the painful divorce process.

3-0 out of 5 stars an adequate book
I found this book useful, but most of the value could be condensed to a shorter text. One thing readers should understand (not evident from the book jacket or the excerpts) is that this book has a very strong emphasis on the Christian faith as it relates to one's experience of divorce. If you look at the other posted reviews, you will see that the greatest value was derived from people who shared this cultural background. As someone of another faith, I found that I skipped over at least 50% of the text because it did not apply to me. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It was almost better than my own honeymoon!
Franz Wisner AND his brother are funny, smart and so very brave!I found this book in the travel section of my local bookstore, but it very much deserves its place on the NY Times Bestseller List (where it's been for 15 straight weeks at the time of this review).Move that book to the front of the store! You will love this book for several reasons:
1-0 out of 5 stars Good Title: Bad Book
Not witty enough to be funny. Not deep enough to be heartfelt. Not written well enough to have been published.I got a great idea why his fiance dumped him and why his boss demoted him, but I have no idea why any editor gave the 'thumbs up' to this mess.I gave the one star for the title. It was the most interesting part of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Katz is right on--this is the next step in ending violence.
Jackson Katz believes that an end to violence (of all kinds, but particularly violence against women) must come from a new definition of masculinity that does not support violent behavior. His book explains clearly why this is and how to begin to make it happen and is some of the most positive and forward-thinking work in this field. This book is very accessible--it is not accusatory or preach-y and is very honest.I have bought a second copy of the book because so many people have been interested in borrowing it.Jackson Katz is a real innovator and his book is insightful and inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this for the men in your life....
I wish I had 200 copies of this book. There are so many men I know that can find themselves depicted in Katz's clear and insightful reflections on male culture today. Why has the violence women suffer at the hands of some men been called a "woman's issue"? Where's the curiosity and creativity of more men when it comes to looking at why violence and sexual violence in particular are so epidemic? Or even, more dangerously, glamorized in aspects of the pornography industry? Forget "Pretty Woman" or "The Girl Next Door" and dive into real life. Katz has done his research and articulates a vision that should make every man stand up and collectively work to make this a world they are proud their daughters and sons will inherit. I really wish I had 200 copies....

5-0 out of 5 stars Great job, Jackson
I've always been a big fan of Jackson Katz' work and his latest book is no exception. This is a really accessible, well written, and thorough piece that takes a critical look at the hegemony in our society that makes violence against women by men, men's destructive and violent behavior become a culturally normal thing. Katz does an incredible job in piecing together his argument in a clear manner that doesn't alienate the audience..and in any sort of anti-violence work, that's a really difficult thing to do because the subject matter is such a serious and taboo one. I would highly recommend this book for any parent, any educator, anybody that wants to take proactive steps against men's violence in america and think critically about those issues. I would also suggest Jackson's video, the bible of any men's anti-violence work "Tough Guise" (www.mediaed.org). As a student in the women studies department at the University of Washington, I can say that Jackson's work is always highly respected and popular among the students and faculty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable
I read this book and it took me about a week!! Why??? Because everytime I started to read it the tears just started flowing! It is unthinkable what this poor child went through. I cannot even imagine what the mother was thinking or should I say "monster" because she is by NO means a mother! I can just feel for this little girl, she was so wanting to please her monster to no avail. Right up to the end thats all she wanted to do. HOW can people do THIS??? There is barely a day when I don't think about Ursula and wish SOMEONE had done SOMETHING to stop this! To me it's ridiculous how people can just ignore it or not see it. This world just gets worse day by day. For you URSULA I say the world is cruel. I love you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cried Tears For This Baby Girl................
I just received this book in the mail today and could not stop reading it until I was done.I cried from the beginning til the end. This beautiful little girl,Ursula was beaten to death.I pictured all the abuse Ursula went through as I looked at her face on the back cover from time to time as I read.I was crying so hard for the pain that Ursula was going through my husband came into the room. The severity of the abuse Ursula suffered, no little girl should have to endure. The most heart-breaking part of the book is the comments and cries out for help to Ursula's mother in her weakened little voice. This book is definitely not for young readers. What these people did to this sweet loving little girl and no one saw the signs. No one helped her.Why didn't the teacher, neighbors, co-workers or friends see her malnourished, beaten and slumped over body? She cried out for help and no one heard her cries or they did and ignored them. That's all Ursula wanted was to be loved and taken care of by her mother. Instead every day she left Ursula with a monster and did nothing to stop him when she came home.Eventually she even joins in at the instruction of her boyfriend. When Ursula died they threw her away and erased all traces of her like she never existed.I shed more tears in the time it took me to read Ursula's story than her mother did when she died. She had every chance to help that little girl and sat idly by.I recommend this book to everyone with a child. I recommend this book to everyone without a child.Recognize the signs and get involved.Save these kinds of children from going through this pain. I will hug my kids a little more and a little tighter after having read this tragic story of a little girl named Ursula Sunshine Assaid.

5-0 out of 5 stars i will never forget.........................
I lived down the street from ursula, when i was young,i used to walk down the street every day.....after reading this book,a part of me felt guilty, thinking why i didn't pay attention to a lone little girl tied to a tree....i wonder did i ever see her outside and if so why i never saw she was in pain....i know i was only 12 but, maybe if i had noticed, maybe she would be alive today...what he did to her and the neighbor, she confided in and the teachers not noticing i'll never understand why adults just look the other way...Sorry Ursula...we should have noticed your pain and saved you. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I'm using this book as part of homeschooling my preschoolers. It is great to get ideas from, and the children love learning and practicing new manners. This book not only serves for the good of my children, but also in reminding me of certain things as well. Family life has been much more pleasant since implementing the ideas in this book. My only complaint is that it should have been organized by topic and had tabs for quick reference. Otherwise, it's a good book if you take the time to look for what you want.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Information, Poor Layout
This book is FULL of great ideas and information. It is however, listed in calendar format which cannot really be used practically.February 16 is about swimiming pools and unless they are indoors, not many are swimming at this time of year. And there aren't exactly 365 differnent manners because some of them are repeated and build on each other.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful law enforcement field guide
Obviously the author of the one star review has had some negative experience with regards to the subject matter of this book. To call the information "outdated" is ludicrous in that so little information has been available for so long. Those that have participated in the web of deceit referred to as Munchausen's Syndrome find it difficult to accept the truth and are often on the offensive with anyone that possesses the knowledge of this disorder and its existance. Their anger and resentment is further exacerbated when this information is conveyed in any logical, fact based manner.

1-0 out of 5 stars Over-priced and Out Dated!
This witch-hunt is over. The creator of MSBP (Roy Meadow) has been exposed and discredited for his "fanciful tales" and courts all over the UK are overturning convictions. Courts in the US are recognizing that this is not a diagnosis accepted by any medical establishment. 5-0 out of 5 stars An important work from an acknowledged expert in the field.
Detective Artingstall is well-known for her body of writings and her experience in Munchausen syndrome and Munchausen by proxy cases. In this authoritative work, she provides insights and practical assistance missingfrom most other books on the subject.Legal forms, lists of pertinentquestions to ask as cases are examined, and summaries of chapter highlightsare among the useful elements of the book. The book is also liberallydotted with case studies, including legal outcomes.Although thecopy-editing is not as thorough as I would have liked, the content of thebook is outstanding.Detective Artingstall's book will be an often-citedresource for practitioners of multiple disciplines--social work, lawenforcement, nursing, medicine, child protection, and more.Whilefactitious disorder and Munchausen syndrome have been long-acknowledged inthe professional literature, the type of abuse called Munchausen by proxyhas been recognized and studied only within the last 2 decades.Works suchas this one--based on a mastery of the literature, a wealth of personalexperience, and an abiding desire to uncover the truth (no matter howdisturbing)--will be invaluable in irrefutably establishing Munchausen byproxy as a public health and criminal-justice issue that requires ourcareful attention. ... This book explained so much!Growing up with foster parents and no consistent parenting has made life confusing. Its been interesting to read that any adult, even the adults with the same parents from birth also have attachment issues. This is the first book I have found that explains how someone's childhood dramatically affects our ability to attach to our own children.Every parent I know wants to give their children their best and this book shows me how anyone understand ALL the sides of attachment disorder. Most of the books I have found have only explained why a child is not able to attach. What a relief to understand the whole subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for professionals in mental health fields!
Karen's work reviews attatchment research and theory from inception through present day. It's a fascinating read as well, authored by a practitioner and teacher, one who interviewed the great minds that participated in creating a phenomenal view of child development. However, the back cover recommends it as a guide for parents, which it is not. Most parents would feel misled by finding a review of the field rather than recommended parenting skills or practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most influential books I have ever read
My education is in Physics and Economics, so whatever psychological knowledge (or lack there of) I have is self-taught. Accordingly, please understand my review is from a perspective that is surely naive. That being said I found "Becoming Attached" so profound that it spawned a hunger in me too learn as much as I can about psychology that has continued unabated 2 years after I first read this book. Currently I am immersed in Carl Jung's original writings. If anyone wants a real understanding of how nurture influences individually psychology, I believe this to be an amazing starting point. Please note: this book is solid and dense, I would not read it if you are looking for something light and airy or are interested in the latest pop-psychology. It is for the serious novice. Since I am now a firm believer that nature and nurture work in combination to determine who we are individually, I also highly recommend reading the book "Moral Animal" by Robert Wright. "Moral Animal" is the perfect compliment to "Becoming Attached" and gives a very compelling introduction on how nature influences us. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for some, maybe not for others
When my wife told me she wanted a divorce, I almost immediately grabbed every book I could find on resurrecting a marriage and handling a breakup with kids.I had plenty of time to read suddenly, after all.I found this book to be not only the most effective in handling kidds, but probably contained the best advice on keeping the marriage together.Alas, it was not meant to be.
5-0 out of 5 stars Susan Ashley, Ph.D. Author of The ADD and ADHD Answer Book
This is my first choice for book recommendations in my practice for divorcing families. It is a blueprint for how to raise a well adjusted child in two homes. If divorced parents only followed the advice in this book divorce would not be so tragic for children. This book advocates putting the child first and tells parent how to behave civilly and work co-operatively with the other parent for the sake of the child, telling parents what to do and what to say that keeps your child out of the middle of the anger between former spouses. This book is for every divorcing family regardless of your unique circumstances.

4-0 out of 5 stars An essential book
This book breaks down the basics for families living under two roofs. It simplifies a very complicated, emotional process with rational, logical solutions. It is a must for any parents who share custody of their children. It will keep your decision-making based on what's best for the children and not about parental conflicts.A must-read for all shared custody families. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK "SAVED MY MARRIAGE"
There are three of you in a marriage. YOU, ME and US. All three need to be happy. This book can get you there. It saved our marriage.

5-0 out of 5 stars A profound, important, and implication-rich book
For me this book is one of the most profound and important books I have ever read about relationships and communication.Although it is written as a book about marital relationships, it has implications for every kind of relationship, and not only intimate or dyadic ones. And, although it is written as a pop psychology book, I think it makes a real contribution to the social-scientific understanding of relationships and communication -- that is, it stands up well as a general model of communication and relationship.I think it is a great book and would be of great value not only to those trying to solve relationship problems but to those wanting to understand the ways in which self and relationship are intertwined in general. It illuminates all of the areas of one's life in which one communicates with others and, as another reader said, can be as valuable for understanding past relationships as for dealing with present ones. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally Advice for Dads
As the dad of a teen girl who has gone through a lot of bullying I was nodding my head at the stories. Then I got to the chapter on Dads and Daughters and thought "At last!"This is the first concrete advice I've found on how to help my daughter. It's great to recognize that fathers play an important role too.One of my daughter's teachers read this, and is going to start a program at her school to stop relational aggression, so even more girls will benefit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and inspiring!
This book on female bullying is an absolutely wonderful."Sticks and stones can break your bones, but words can break your heart." That's what female bullying would hurt girls deeply. This book is worth reading and there are some great take-home points. I really enjoyed the book and found it helpful. Only if I read it earlier! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Response to Mr. Greenstein
Mr. Greenstein wasn't being accurate earlier with regard to the section, "The Entitlement Myth."Although we respect his opinion, we beleive he has taken our work out of context. Here are the first few paragraphs of that section for future potential readers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, actually
I bought this along with a few other self-help books, and this one was probably the most realistic. The overall tone is sincere but firm, which I think is a good thing especially with a sometimes delicate subject like dating and love. I think the title may be a little misleading, and perhaps a more fitting one would be along the lines of "Dating Advice for Nice People," but I guess I can't critique that since titles are supposed to catch your attention and well, I own the book now.
