5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I felt this book was insightful, consise, and most importantly helpful. The strategies in this book focus on automatic thoughts, your perception of your mate, and how to foster good communication. The tone of the book is very friendly and non confrontational.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but some shortcomings.....
This is a great book on cognitve therapy as it applies to relationships. It is well-written, rigorous and illustrates important points with useful examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars MOTHER-DAUGTER WISDOM RESONATES...
...with wisdom and truth. You read her words and know somewhere deep inside that it's true--the connection with our mothers--and the connection with our daughters. This is a wonderful book to give and to receive. Your girlfriends, daughters and sisters will thank you. Sound medical advice and much, much more. MOTHERING-DAUGHTER WISDOM is not only the best in its field, there's little to compare!
5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Northrup walks her talk!
I always look to see if an author stands in their truth. If they walk their talk.Dr. Christiane Northrup does.I have read all of her books, Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom, The Wisdom of Menopause and now Mother-Daughter Wisdom. They all embody her path to well-being and her knowledge on the subject of women's health. In her book Mother-Daughter Wisdom, she shares her own life experiences from raising two daughters and her expertise as a medical doctor and relates them to health and wellness.I find this book to be a great tool and guide to help mothers raise empowered daughters and a model for a healthy mother-daughter relationship.I have three grown daugthers and would have loved to have had this book when they were growing up.I found out through much trial and error how to raise empowered daughters.Dr. Northrup is a pioneer in our time venturing into these unchartered waters of how mothers and daughters can have a balanced and loving relationship. She addresses the many challenges in our society today facing girls and gives suggestions on how to deal with them in a positive way.She talks about mothers caring and nurturing themselves in order to care for their daughter. This book is also areference book as Dr. Northrup covers from birth to adulthood for the many stages in a mother and daughter's life.Mothers, men, and women without children, would benefit by reading this book to connect with their own legacy with their mother or if raising a daughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids
My granddaughter loved the explanations about autism in this book. She is 9, and it is written where she can understand more about the behaviors of her brother with autism. She was even going to take it to school for her teacher to read, and some of her classmates. Many adults would benefit from reading it also.

5-0 out of 5 stars MARCHING TO YOUR OWN DRUMMER
This is an excellent teaching tool that paves the way towards acceptance of persons who display autistic behavior.Autism and its related neurobiological condition, Asperger's are spectrum conditions.Common spectrum behaviors include a myriad of sensory issues such as strong aversions for loud noises; strong reactions to certain smells and tastes and distinctive speaking styles. Many spectrum behaviors overlap and Asperger's, while considered at the higher end of the autism spectrum does indeed share common neuro-sensory ground with autism.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
Ignore the fussy Library Journal review up there and get this book if you have any suspicion that you were raised by a narcissist. I'm just starting the process of coming to terms with my childhood and this book has been a tremendous help. Dr. Golomb collects a diverse range of case studies, insightfully explains the psychological processes at work in each one, and then finally brings the lessons of all the cases together to offer practical advice on recovery. If you've been dogged by the cruelty and rejection of a narcissistic parent all your life, this book is a great way to begin the process of moving out from under that shadow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a "GREAT BOOK" if your ready to learn how your life has been effected by your childhood.Very moving and can be pain full in some parts.A must read if your ready to understand the why and the what.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good book not just about narcissists, but about manipulative people!
This book was great. It flowed well, with a lot of real life stories. The explanation and solutions were well tied into those stories.

1-0 out of 5 stars Violence Begets Violence
Dobson has it wrong. Children's susceptibility to God and the attributes of God has to do with rearing them with the love of God in their hearts from the beginning, praying and relying on God, and being taught to please God. Violence begets violence. To spank and be violent toward children is proof of the perpetrator's ignorance of modern scientific evidence that spanking is detrimental to the emotional, physical and spiritual evolution of children. Ignorance begets ignorance, and if you're in charge of children, feeding your mind with ignorance is no benefit to your child.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful advice for the christian family.
My mother in law recommended this book to me after the birth of my first child. She had read the original version when her children were young.I also bought the original version and used it with my first child. Now that my son is firmly entrenched in his terrible two's I decided to update to this newer edition to see if Dr. Dobson had any new insights several decades later.I'm pleased to say he sticks to his guns and The New Dare to Discipline is almost word for word the same as the original.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be misled
This is a great book.My parents used these principles and so do I.It advocates spanking among other forms of discipline. It contains balanced, tried and true principles for child rearing. This book never advocates abuse, beating, shoving, pushing or broken arms as some on this site have claimed.Almost of all of the kids I knew growing up got the occasional spanking.I can't name one, who feels that a spanking was abuse or who feels they were emotionally damaged by it. Child abuse is a horrific evil in the world, but this isn't child abuse. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable and Helpful Approach
This book offers an alternative to radical action that could help save many marriages and preserve the friendship in cases where the marriage is over. It was nice to know there are ways to soften the transition if it is determined that one or both of you do not wish to remain in the marriage. It is also good to hear that in many cases, the author's suggestions helped rock the boat enough that the couple was spurred to actions that resulted in not only saving the marriage, but restoring the relationship to health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marriage saver
This book was a huge help for me.My husband wanted a divorce which came as a shock. My therapist recommended this book for us.It contains a contract to seperate instead of jumping into divorce. My husband and I were able to agree to the rules of the contract, which gave us time to think things out and try to work at the marriage instead of ditching it altogether.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer
This book is an excellent primer for a family therapist, and is written as such. The text does not assume that the reader knows anything. It is a good introduction to family therapy for those who go above and beyond family counseling. As a mental health counseling grad student, I noticed that the text stays within its scope of family therapyt and does not stray from a this model.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for all beginning therapists!
This book will take you step-by-step through the process of doing psychotherapy from beginning to end. It is very user-friendly, basic and real. Out of my 8 textbooks this semester to read, this is the one that gets read first because of the valuable information it offers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and interesting therapeutic model.
Richard Schwartz clearly explains his therapeutic model of working with sub-personalities (parts) in a way that empowers the client to lead their lives from their Self instead of having one or more of their 'parts' run the show!Although I have intuitively been working this way in a gestalt framework, his model gives many guidelines to make this process smoother and avoid pitfalls in this type of work.An excellent guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" book for those entering the counseling field.
Through personal application of the therapies described in this book, I found it to be profoundly enlightening. It shed bright lights on the origins of my own thoughts and self-talk. Experiencing the benefits of the therapies, seeing that they work, it provided the best form of teaching to me as to how it can be a valuable resource for helping one's self and for helping others. Having specialized in pastoral counseling while earning my Masters of Divinity degree, this book has done more to help me understand the multiple (and valuable) personalities all persons develop from childhood to adulthood and then how to use these therapies in a counseling setting. Its methods provide such a positive way of looking at ourselves, at other individuals, and at family dynamics. The concept of internal family systems therapy makes so much sense that I hope more therapists and counselors discover it, utilize it, and recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book with permanently change your view of psychotherapy
Internal Family Systems Therapy by Richard C. Schwartz represents the author's attempt at documenting a fascinating journey into the inner lives of clients. His model uniquely applies systems thinking to internalprocess, seeing our inner lives as yet another level of human systems. As Iread this book, I was taken aback by how psychodynamics suddenly becamecoherent to me in a way that made intuitive and intellectual sense. Schwartz takes the reader through the development of the IFS model, anddemonstrates how the therapy emerged from his interactions with hisclients. He is successful in describing the step-by-step process of IFStherapy that is tied directly to the theory.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Steps to peace, joy, and love in every home.
Raising Respectful Children becomes more of a challenge each day as we the Baby Boomers have raised a generation of children without a high moral standard or appropriate social skills.Jill Rigby's book has given us the opportunity to make a difference in children today by providing a well developed manual to teach respect. There is an extra benefit to her work in that as adults we can all benefit personally when we apply the lessons in our own lives.I'm giving this book to all of my friends with young children and grandparents.
5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL BOOK!
I read this book in one sitting and have constantly referred to pages I have earmarked for guidance. It is practical and helps parents be better parents and the end result is better children. We all have seen how disrespectful the majority of kids are today and with Ms. Rigby's book, I think we can all benefit from this and help our kids become responsible, delightful adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Parenting
This is a practical guide for any parent who is concerned about raising children in our post modern culture. The book is full of wisdom that was common knowlege in prior generations but has to be taught to parents today. It is sad how our culture has degenerated and books like this are necessary today. This book could be the start of a cultural revolution. Who knows, maybe the US could become a civil society again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Plan
I'm smack in the middle of reading this book, but I've done so much scanning of it, I've checked out what the book has to offer.I really feel like this book gives solid plans for many toddlers' routines. It's true that much of what she says is "common sense", but also a lot of it is stuff I wasn't thinking at the time I read it, so it gave me great ideas.I esp. liked her plans for bathing, eating, and diapering.I wish now that I had payed more attention when I read her baby edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars common sense...but couldn't we use a little more of that?
I like Tracy Hogg...and after reading her first book I was compelled to try this one as well. Although a lot of her wisdom is really common sense, it's always good to get a refresher. It's easy to get caught up in being tired and emotional as the mom of a toddler, so this book made me take a deep breath and re-evaluate my actions. I recommend it to all new moms!

2-0 out of 5 stars Common Sence
I thought this book was a lot of basic information about toddlers that most parents already know. It gave no strategies to try or routines to set up to make life easier. It basically says that to be able to manage your toddler's behavior you need to know what kind of a toddler they are. Ok? So I know my child is a "textbook" toddler, now what? I feel like the book doesn't go any further than that! It was a waste of money. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Identifies Problem, but Doesn't Provide Solution
I felt this book identified the problem extremely well.I could see how a relationship I've been in fits the description of a betrayal bond nearly perfectly. However, I was disappointed in that I did not think the solution was very clearly explained. In fact, p. 35 says that trauma bonds "can be formed almost instantaneously, but they can last forever," leaving me to wonder if there is any hope.p. 165 identifies the dimensions of recovery as healthy bonds, boundary development, role development, trauma resolution, systems change, sense of self, key metaphors, and a recovery plan. However, I did not feel that these dimensions (except perhaps the recovery plan) were adequately explained in the book. One final criticism is that the suggestion to develop healthy bonds seems to focus only on developing healthy bonds with a therapist and support groups. Not everyone is going to feel the need for therapy and support groups, if they have adequate support from significant people in their life. Why doesn't the author address the importance of forming healthy bonds with family and friends?I would think a trauma survivor would be better off with healthy, supportive relationships in their life in the form of family and friends, than to become dependent on a therapist and support group.I am not much of a believer in psychotherapy, so I did not find this particular book very useful.I would have liked concrete suggestions for how to detach from the person who I have this unhealthy bond with.

THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK. IT HAS BEEN OVER THIRTY YEARS SINCE I WAS A COLLEGE FRESHMAN AND THIS BOOK WAS INSIGHTFUL AND HELPFUL AS MY SON LEAVES FOR COLLEGE.I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR PARENTS WHOSE FIRST CHILD IS LEAVING FOR COLLEGE OR THEIR LAST CHILD.EVERY PARENT OF A COLLEGE STUDENT SHOULD READ THIS BOOK.

I was having a hard time dealing with my younger sisters going away to college but this book helped me to cope and put things into perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Letting Go and What's Next
As a Career Coach and parent of two college students, I have used this book as a personal and professional resource.Too often parents can get swept up in the busy high school years of their teen's junior and senior years.Along with parenting other children, working their own jobs, managing the home, etc.the stress of supporting their son or daughter for college or post high school education can be overwheliming, espcially for the student who is reluctant to commit to the research or is apathetic about the process of preparing for college selection.LETTING GO is a helpful resource for hanging in there, getting grounded in your role as parent, and helping you prepare for the changing family dynamics.Sending a student to college brings up the big question, what's next, not only for the student but the parent. This book can support both of you as you wrestle with the issues of independence, decision making, and planning a successful future. 4-0 out of 5 stars Character - A Lost Art that McCain is trying to Revive
This is a good book. Not something you sit down and read but rather something you sit by the bed and read a chapter now and then. It's long but its worth the time. Took me a few months. You'll read about all kinds of real people and their courageous acts that seperate them from the normal. Everyone from Gandhi, to Shackleton, to Lord Nelson and Abraham Lincoln to Martin Luther King and Mother Teresa. I think there is 36 in all. The diversity is great since you read about all times in history and all kinds of situations and people. Loved it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Personifying Character
John McCain has successfully shown us the important characteristics of a good life. He assigns different people to each of the different traits that he covers in this book.Character is Destiny, despite what many may think, is unbiased and nonpartisan. If you did not know from the beginning, you would not be able to tell that it was a politician that wrote this book.McCain uses personal accounts of people, as well as other resources in writing this book.He uses national leaders, religious leaders, professional athletes, and plain selfless people. He shows that people of all types can add something to their community. This book covers thirty-four character traits that every person should long to possess.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good reminder of the best in us for the young and old.
McCain and Salter have produced a fine compilation of condensed stories which exemplify character. Each chapter can be read in a short time frame, making it a good book to sit by the armchair or bedside.

4-0 out of 5 stars highly recommended for parents of teen girls
I really learned alot from this book & plan on reading it again. It helped me adjust my parenting techniques with my 13 year old daughter and also made me feel better about myself. I have told many people to read this book, it is very well written and really helps a parent with the adolecent girl.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great advice if your kids perfect already!
I wouldn't have bought this book if I wasn't dealing with a VERY defiant, and manipulative teenage daughter--so when this book assumes that I can just say the right thing and everything will be fine, is an absolute joke! This advice would be great if it worked as simply as the book says. But if you already have a tough kid, these tips are NOT going to suddenly make her see the logic in my rules.Kids don't care about the explaination of why it's wrong to dress trashy or wear too much makeup...they want what they want. This book assumes that your kid obeys you in the first place! The title really drew me in--I thought that I had finally found a book that understood what I am going through. But it's just another below-average parenting book with a catchy title!

5-0 out of 5 stars No, I'm not going crazy!
I thought I going was nuts, not knowing how to parent my pre-teen.At last, a book to let me know I was not going crazy by myself, that it is perfectly normal what we are going through, why I as the mom am the target and spring board for her growing up.It also gives ideas on how to rethink parenting, your responses to issues. It shows why "I" the mom am the only one, cuz I'm the closest one to her, that she is 'experimenting with life' off of.I don't feel so alone, I'm okay, and can see why I get the backwash, and the testing.I highly recommend this book to other moms and also dads too, so they can understand the battle while they watch from the sidelines. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Brainy and well worth it
This is a scholarly collection of essays from leading theorists in the field of attachment and neurobiology. It provides an exciting, in-depth overview from various perspectives from the inner workings of the brain, to the development of the social mind, to what it all mean for clinicians. There is both theory and practical advice. The last several chapters are particularly relevant to psychotherapists in the field working with individuals with trauma. The down side of the book is that some of the early chapters are somewhat rhedundant and heady, necessarily so in the science presented, but definately overlapping. However, I'd strongly recommend it for all clinicians wanting to stay abreast of the exciting developments in this area. I use it in supervision groups I lead for therapists, for example.
5-0 out of 5 stars Traumas as Social Interactions
We react to serious mishaps, life altering setbacks, disasters, abuse, and death by going through the phases of grieving. Traumas are the complex outcomes of psychodynamic and biochemical processes. But the particulars of traumas depend heavily on the interaction between the victim and his social milieu.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for every mom (and dad)!
Wow!I loved this book. The writing is so great... practical and hilarious at the same time. The description of her childrens' rooms matches perfectly with what I see in my own home.I was laughing out loud at many of the descriptions and will recommend this book to every mom I know. This book is a voice of sanity and reason in a crazy parenting world!Paula Spencer doesn't claim to have all the answers but her advice is to trust your gut and r-e-l-a-x.I think that's the best advice out there.Parenting shouldn't be so hard. It's the most natural thing in the world!I'm glad to know that I'm not the only mom who lets the kids clean themselves in the tub simply by splashing around in the bubbles.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wise, Witty and Wonderful!
Laugh-out-loud funny and head-nodding wise, Momfidence is an essential guide to modern motherhood.Like a modern-day Erma Bombeck, Paula Spencer brings a delightful sense of humor, solid experience and a warm heart to the challenges of parenting, offering up sound and practical advice. Kudos to Paula for bringing common sense--and fun--back into being a Mom.

5-0 out of 5 stars No more guilt trips!!
Paula Spencer is well-versed in all the parenting advice from the 'experts'. Heck, she's interviewed them for articles she has written for magazines. That's why it's ironically-fitting (and somehow poetic justice) for her to tell all of us mothers not to worry so much about what we did -- or didn't do -- in our motherhood roles. Momfidence! is a welcome break from the guilt trip that we often find ourselves on.The book covers so many different aspects of real-life motherhood, and every mom is sure to see herself in many of the situations Paula describes. There is lots of practical wisdom in this book and lots of humor, too. Paula shares personal anecdotes with her readers, giving them a window into her world and true appreciation of her own pursuit of Momfidence! I gave this book to two of my friends who had babies recently, and they love it. I wish this book had been around 15 years ago when I had the first of my three sons. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A helping hand
A beautiful book containing many simple yet profound insights.A very helpful tool for those exploring the within for the purpose of healing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Legacy of the Heart
Just what I expected it to be. It's a practical application of spiritual principles. Very easy to follow and very poigniant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book of it's kind!
This book helps readers to identify in what ways they may be hampered by their past and gives amazing practices to help overcome being stuck there. The author is compassionate but unerringly insightful about the defences we use to stop ourselves from incurring futher pain, yet he makes us want to move from that place by realizing how much we are cutting ourselves off from the joys of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, hilarious and scriptural
Ginger Plowman is humble, real and hilarious. It's like having a godly friend that's more experienced taking you by the hand and leading you through training your children. She's has helped me to be a more discerning listener to the pulse of my child's heart. She helps you train your child by diagnosing the root of the problem rather than just pruning and pruning but never really getting at the "cancer"... (the sin in their hearts, their motives, desires.)
2-0 out of 5 stars Extremely focused on spanking only
I did find some of the advice in this book to be helpful and convicting spiritually. However, I cannot recommend it because of the serious problems. In the first place, the only discipline tool for punishment that the book recommends is spanking (although in one example, in the middle of the *large* section about spanking, the author takes away privileges, but she never recommends that). She never acknowledges or addresses the possibility that the "rod" in scripture might mean anything other than or in addition to literal physical discipline, and she provides no analysis of what the "rod" actually meant in the time of the writing of Proverbs nor of what a "child" is in that context (what age was the writer referring to?).Her point would be much stronger if she addressed some of these issues, but she just glibly throws out the standard scriptures, without any meaningful interpretation or analysis, and then moves on.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Practical Book on Heart-Oriented Discipline
