Editorial Review

Kids tend to blame themselves when parents divorce. The Sandcastles workshop--now mandatory in over a dozen counties throughout the United States--is a half-day group session for children of divorce between the ages of 6 and 17. This intensive workshop helps kids open up and deal with their feelings through drawings, games, poetry, role playing, and other activities. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great secular source of idea's and inspiration to help kids.
Dear Reader, This book is a great help for parents who have small children and want to make sure they are not lost in the divorce process. Get this book and read it all. As well it will help the parents and everyone connected to their life and affected by the divorce. Since no therapist, government body or secular agency can help from a spiritual perspective this book is the definitive secular bible for divorcing\divorced parents with kids. Divorce and the reasons for it are as old as Moses, and if you must enter that arena, at least the world's modern ways to cope with it are most all found here and for a price far less than the divorce and classes that follow. If reconciliation has even half a chance... Go For It First. With that in mind, remember or remind the reader to seek spiritual support if they have any religious affiliation. Otherwise, this book, good supportive friends\family and the best support therapy you can afford for yourself and your kids is about all there is. Good Luck to All. Amen.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are divorcing and have children, read this book!
I am a retired elementary school guidance counselor, and have often recommended this book to parents who have come to me for advise in understanding how their children experience divorce and strategies for helping them cope with it. I have also used it as I developed small group activities for my "divorce groups". It is filled with invaluable information and includes many easy but effective activities for parents to do with their child to maintain communication during this difficult time. One of the most valuable features is information about how children adjust to the separation of their parents at different developmental levels. Sadly, I recently dug out my copy of the book and then ordered two copies, one for my son and one for my daughter-in-law, to use in helping my granddaughter cope with the end of their marriage. I wish everyone who is divorcing and has children would read this book and follow the advise contained therein. We'd have lots more kids surviving the break-up of their parents with their emotional health intact.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicely balanced book
As a mental health professional I am always a little skeptical about this kind of book - when people write based on their experience they sometimes forgo the need to check whether their experience is consistent with that of other people in other places by reviewing the research literature before writing their books. I was pleasantly surprised to find this book full of evidence based suggestions and information for separating/separated parents. It is an easy read, with information clearlypresented so non-professionals will find it very helpful; and for those who have a scientific background and who are familiar with the psychological research in this field it will be clear that the book is based upon solid information. A very useful resource. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I needed this one
I needed this book.I will probably refer to it often. There is no life after divorce if you don't move on.This book contained many eye-openers for me.Hopefully after reading this I won't sabotage my own happiness by staying attached to a man who is unable to make a committment to anyone other than himself.I've probably read at least ten books on survival and recovery from divorce. This one is helping me let my 32-year marriage die.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book! Finally
My parents divorced 2 years ago after being married for 30 years. After 2 whole years, my mom was still stagnant, as hurt and as mad as the day she filed for divorce. I've sent her numerous books, groups and web sites and she never got trough any of them. She's really not a reader so I thought she would not read it at all. The day I sent this book to her, she began reading it right there, cover to cover. She said it is the most relavant book she has read that she can actually relate to. That it help put a lot of what she was going through into focus. glad something my mom finally finds useful to help in healing and growing after life with my dad.

1-0 out of 5 stars Overly Simplistic but Good Tips
As someone who has a toxic mother, you know how everyday feels like an eternity when you feel so much pain inside.Half of the book is about other people's experiences with her in therapy and the other half is about how we can change our situation ourselves.I gave her 1 star because of this very important point that she misses:If you have a truly toxic parent, confrontation is not the answer (as she says).I agree with the other reviewer who gave one star because it doesn't seem like she has truly been in this kind of a situation. The REALITY of LIVING WITH TOXIC PARENTS is that THEY DO NOT CHANGE.I am a grounded and fair minded person, but I think her advice is baloney. And she spent chapters on bits of advice that you could outline on one page.I felt so bad after reading it.Thanks for letting me share my thoughts with all of you.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Only Wish I Had Read this YEARS Ago!
It would have saved me years of guilt about hating my mother ("Mommie Dearest" without all the glamour) and wishing things could be different.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite
This is my fourth child and I was bored with my old pregnancy books. This book contains good information, but the writing style seemed strange. The author seems to have some "issues" that I found distracting. When talking about ultrasounds she says that "you might see your baby. . .frowning as if to say, 'You again?'"I guess she just seems very negative about pregnancy in general.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Educational
I found this book to be an excellent reference and informative of my weekly progress, as well as what to expect in coming weeks. The color photos of the baby's progress are amazing, the section layout comprehensive, the glossary and relative questions helpful.I felt it was a bonus for Dr. Riley to cover post-partum and baby care, questions and information about the many pre-natal testing out there. It helps educate and inform without overloading the reader.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not great
I don't care for the way this book is organized. I have only glanced at "What to Expect...", but the two books seem very similar, with small sections (paragraph-length or sometimes longer) in each chapter that are usually not in any obviously logical order, which makes it difficult to reference. The information is also pretty basic. I would say this reads more like tiny magazine articles than any comprehensive and useful guide to rely on in your pregnancy. I haven't found any other guide that really excites me, but the closest I've found is the "Mayo Clinic's Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy". That book gives all the same information you find in this plus more in a more logical format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Practical and Supportive
This book was very helpful to me as an adult child of a borderline parent. It gave me validation, the secure sense that I was not going crazy through all this time of the tough experiences in this relationship with my mother.Reading the book was like I had told someone what I went through and they were talking to me about it.The exercises are very practical if you have the time to follow them. The only suggestion I would have for the authors would be a set of recommendations for how to connect with other family members who are not "target" of the BPD behavior.Another aspect that would be helpful is to how to help a sibling that is going through this challenge, overcome the difficulties a BPD parent can cause to them and how they see life.Despite these two things not being part of the book, it is still a great work, a quick read, and understanding of where the adult child of a borderline parent is coming from. Also helpful for spouses of the adult children, to better understand them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for Dealing with a Difficult Parent
Not sure what was wrong with my relationship with my mother, but suspecting BPD, I read this book in 2 days. It is the only book I've read that offers practical advice for dealing with difficult people, especially the overbearing, moody, and negative parent. This book was my saving grace and I have given it to friends who also have difficult family members. I can't say enough about the positive change this book has brought, helping me create boundaries and be able to communicate effectively and respectfully. It has also helped me, as a borderline mother myself, not make the same mistakes my mother did.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is so healing!
I am a 39 year old woman who has been living with confusion about my childhood all of my life. This book is exactly what I've needed, I wish I read it 20 years ago.Reading the stories of other survivors has been so healing. My feelings are normal, as far as having grown up with a mother with BPD!I can't say enough about how much this book means to me!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another living proof!
My twin babies were born 8lbs and 8lbs4oz at 38 weeks 3 days, and are as healthy as can be.Being someone who likes to know all the possible risks and be mentally prepared for them, this book gave me that.At the same time I actually found the book very comforting with milestones to look forward to (for example the head circumference diagram and footprint comparison of each month the babies stay inside the womb).I also followed Dr Luke's weight gain recommendation and packed on necessary pounds which I believe helped contributed to the high birth weight of the babies.I definitely recommend this book to pregnant moms of multiples!I have read other books on multiple pregnancies that were downright depressing and uncaring, and other light readings like "Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy", which was fun to read but not at all helpful for a high risk multiples pregnancy. Thanks Dr Luke and Tamara!!!I am so grateful for your book.

5-0 out of 5 stars TWINS GALORE - the proof is in the pudding!
7 lbs 5 oz and 6 lbs 11 oz - huge, healthy, and full-term!! Think about it - how many parents of twins can actually (truthfully) say that?? I'm living the reality of my dreams and hopes and I owe it SOLELY to THIS BOOK. And let me also reassure you that the outcome of my twin pregnancy was NOT just a fluke - I worked very hard toward it, by reading, understanding and fully implementing the entire protocol that Dr. Luke recommends. Now that I glow as a proud mom of beautifull, completely healthy, remarkable twins, I owe it to the world to share my secret - if you are expecting twins or more, PLEASE read and follow this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have book if you are prego with multiples
I purchased this book when I first found out I was prego with triplets. I was quite distressed because my regular OB wanted me to reduce down to twins as he was sure I wouldn't be able to carry triplets to term (for trips)and healthy.I am also a petite woman (5ft)and he said "there isn't enough room in your uterus".I read this book in two days and was so encouraged by all the things expectant moms can do to increase their chances. So far, so good. This is the Bible for HOM moms.I have since spoken to other triplet moms and they too LOVE this book. I have referred to this book several times during the course of my pregancy and keep it by my bedside. This is a must have!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, Fun Book for Beginnner Dads
This book is a great starting place if you are like me and are a first time Dad with absolutely zero experience dealing with babies. It presents really useful information and tidbits in an entertaining format for guys. The illustrations are quite amusing as well. Who knew that Bob Marley's 'Buffalo Solider' has a perfectly soothing rhythym that matches the baby's heartbeat and helps them relax? It is also contains tidbits on how to leverage your bundle of joy psychologically on others - catching relief at work etc. Things that guys need to know that they would never learn from your typical baby books. I particularly like the bit on how to powernap to minimize fatigue.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and informative
Read this book 3 times before the baby was born, because it was so funny. Several of the nurses in the hospital saw it and wrote down the name of the book so that they could recommend it to other new fathers. I've bought another copy for my bro in law so that he can enjoy it and learn as much as I have. I haven't found any other source of information more valuable and humorous for a new father then this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches you a lot.. Even if you think you know it all...
I was a single mom before I met my husband.. I wish I had read this book! Now we are going to start trying in January and I read this book hoping to find something that wouldn't sound condescending, protaganistic, or droll. I found it informative, funny and interesting to read. It really taught ME a lot. I left in the bathroom for my husband to read.. :) He read a couple of pages and found it interesting. Trust me you won't be dissapointed! BTW.. I have bought almost every book out there for fathers.. This is by far one of the best! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, depending on your parenting philosophy
Most baby parenting books fall into one of two categories: the old-school, "get the baby on a schedule" philosophy or the pro-co-sleeping, child-led "attachment parenting" philosophy.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Reference Guide and Helpful Resource
At first I did not use the book.I just created a routine and followed it, but now he is 4 months old and I use this book as a guide.I actually am reading it from beginning to end now.The book breaks down each chapter by situation, i.e.. routines, sleep, feedings; then within each chapter she talks about what happens at each age groups, i.e.. 0-3 months, 4-6, as so on.
1-0 out of 5 stars sad
I feel bad for the babies who are forced into what this book promotes.Nature did not intend babies to stick to such a regimented schedule, and parenthood was not intended to be so difficult and structured.I knew this book was not right when the author suggested that formula is just as good as breastmilk - this is absolutely NOT true and such unfortunate advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book to refer back to again and again!
I can not say enough positive things about this outstanding book.As a child therapist, who works with many children in the foster care system and increasing numbers of adopted children, Theraplay has become the single most important tool in my repertoire of therapy modalities. It is veryexciting to find a method of working with children that offers practicaland impactful strategies to try, which are very different from what you mayalready be doing.I have also attended the Theraplay trainings at theTheraplay Institute in Chicago and am near completion of the TheraplayCertification process.Even if I am not using Theraplay with a particularchild, the foundation and understanding of attachment that this model hasgiven me pervade my work.Parents of children that I am using Theraplaywith often report dramatic progress in their child's behavior andattachment to them in a short period of time. One father of aninternationally adopted child that I am using Theraplay with said it best. He stated, "We finally came to realize that our child was not going tobe able to fully benefit from all the supportive services we were takinghim to (including occupational therapy, speech therapy, and physicaltherapy) until he was able to form an attachment with us.Theraplay hasallowed that attachment to form and we are now seeing much more progress inother areas of development."5-0 out of 5 stars This book offers elegant solutions to complex problems.
Jernberg and Booth explore attachment beginning in the nursery, what it looks like when all goes well and when it doesn't.Difficult concepts are presented in ways that make them highly accessable. The beauty of thiswork, is in the solutions that are offered. As I read this book, I foundmy self saying repeatedly, "this make too much sense."Afterreading Theraplay, I registered for the next training offered in Chicago. Anyone working with children in most any capacity would benefit from thiswell researched, time-tested work.Reading this book and attending thetraining has had a tremendous, positive impact on my work as a childtherapist. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I recommend this book for anyone thinking about having having a baby or who is pregnant.Sometimes the best way to address tough issues is with humor and this book is hysterical.Jenny hits the nail on the head.

3-0 out of 5 stars Amusing, but not particularly innovative
There are some very funny and truthful parts of this book, but I wouldn't really call it revolutionary.Maybe most moms just don't sit around and talk honestly with their friends like I do.Not everyone will appreciate her humor or agree with some of her parenting choices.I was unimpressed with the chapter on breastfeeding. It came off as ill-informed and defensive rather than comical. But that's okay, to each her own. Overall McCarthy has a funny and self-deprecating way of writing that makes this very readable. If you're looking for light reading and some fun, this could be a good book for you.I'd recommend checking it out from the library or borrowing it from a friend though.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must read for Potential Moms
I bought this book for a funny and insightful look at what the first year may bring. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it and laughed myself into tears. It was a insightful and humorus look at what it might be like. It did not convince me to get pregnant but I am thinking about it and now have a better idea of what I'm in for. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Every Stage in your Relationship
This hits every point exactly! It is an objective point of view that relates to what you're going through as well as how you choose to make it through on the other side - and what you need to have a succesful relationship.Or to just make sure you don't make the same mistakes over and over.I would highly recommend it!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Right of Passage (spelling is intentional)
"Crazy Time" is a useful book for reading about some of the emotions you may experience in decoupling a marriage. The author discusses marital deadlock, separation, feeling on-edge, denial, shock, ambivalence, depression and three phases of rebirth. I finished the book for what is hoped to be a useful broadening of perspective for which only the passing of time will render a fair verdict. There are some significant criticisms, however.
5-0 out of 5 stars I didn't realize everyone went through this!
I stumbled across this book in a used bookstore, and I believe it was FATE that I found it!This book helps explain the erratic behavior most people experience during the divorce process, WITHOUT JUDGEMENT.She does not try to assign "right" or "wrong" behaviors, simply "behaviors."People who are looking to blame spouses for their actions will not find a willing ear, but this book is for people who want to move on with their lives, yet seek to understand why we act the way we do.Extremely insightful, I've recommended this book to others going through divorce, and they have all found passages that have helped them personally. Buy this used, since you will probably loan it out to someone who won't give it back! ... Read more

This book is truly a celebration of life.If you read this book and still think that allowing abortions on demand is okay, then your heart has grown too hard.dls

5-0 out of 5 stars Miracle:A Celebration of New Life
The book filled with unbelievable moving pictures of babies and the lovely songs on the CD make this book choice one of my favorites.

2-0 out of 5 stars some almost ghoulish
Some of the Geddes photos in this book are a bit extreme - almost ghoulish - with babies under stretched sheer fabric - giving a weird, almost preborn appearance to the infant. Most of the photos, though, are beautiful and creative and just what we have come to expect from this photographer. The audio CD by Celine Dion is absolute perfection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book That Sticks With You
I was particularly taken by this very sad story and in fact read it again, almost a year later (something I rarely do).The author had everything it takes to keep my interest and make the story real enough to haunt me for a long time. This is an excellent memoir.

5-0 out of 5 stars They Cage the animals at night
Growing up was hard for me. As the oldest of three, eventually five, with a mon addicted to crack cocaine, I moved from hosue to house, from school to school. Though always with family. When I read this book I cried until I couldn't cry anymore. Selective amnesia has made it difficult to remember the simplest of things but I will never forget this book and its incredible author, that taught me not that life is rough but that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I read this book almost ten years ago, during a time in my life when I wished to end it all but this book gave me the courage to go on and now at 22 yrs of age I am happier than I've ever been.

This book is very touching. I recomend it to anyone who is in for a sad story. You can see how bad Jennings was treated and how he lived his terrible life. This book is sure to make you cry ... Read more

Editorial Review

The 9 months preceding and the 12 months following child birth are exciting, trying, confusing times; they are the months of many questions. You wonder about your itchy palms, morning sickness, fetus development, home midwife or hospital doctor choices, what to eat, amniocentesis, miscarriages, labor painkillers, maintaining your physical and emotional health after childbirth, and, not least, how to care for your growing, developing baby. A live-in pediatrician would be nice; a 750-page comprehensive reference guide is the next best solution. It won't eliminate anxiety, but it's a reassuring presence, and a soothing source of answers and explanations. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but appears out dated....
I was very excited to receive this book, and started reading it immediately. It is a large hard-cover edition, certainly making it feel as though it has all the information you'll ever need.I'm sure this book has tons of good information, but when I got to the nutrition section, I knew that the food pyramid they showed was out of date.I hadn't checked the copyright when I ordered the book and was disappointed to see that it was published in 1994!12 years old is pretty old when it comes to any medical/health information, and so I'm returning it for the more updated "Mayo Clinic Guide to a healthy Pregnancy".I would have liked the new version to also cover the first year of life like this book, but I need up-to-date information, or I won't trust it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
This is absolutely the best resource for anyone trying to conceive, pregnant, with an infant or just curious about the entire process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, vital book
I first saw the accusations in the book on a half finished Yorkshire television documentary that never made it to television. The allegations were so horrific in the film; it near enough reduced me to tears. So shocked at the material in the film I had to read the book. Sadly the book documents episodes that are far more disheartening than the film did.
5-0 out of 5 stars Corruption In High Places
Lawyer and former state senator John Decamp's book can't be easily dismissed as a wild conspiracy theory, given all the evidence presented in the book and the solid reputation of many who believe in the crimes and the cover-up. One victim of abuse comments that this corruption must stop because next time it could be your kid. Not for the faint of heart, the book covers many grisly details of satanic ritual murder and torture of children by prominent members of society and a subsequent cover-up orchestrated by law enforcement and the press. I believe the problem will grow worse if you let people who are supposedly here to protect us and keep us informed abuse their positions of privilege, trust, and authority for their own gain or security. We might have to start limiting the amassing of great wealth and power because people who get a great amount of wealth and power think that they can get away with anything. And so far, they have.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just not that into it.
I also didn't like it. I don't see what the hype is about it personally. I thought Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy was great but this one doesn't tell you anything that common sense wouldn't! I say if you want to try it out, use the library. That way you aren't wasting your money on it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for making me feel normal!
I love Vicki's books, her sense of humour and sometimes outrageous comments help me feel sane in this otherwise insane parenting ride.If you're looking for the politically correct, always attached parenting book...please save yourself the bother, you'll only get hot under the collar! If, on the other hand, you struggle to do your best, have a load of parent baggage left over from your parents, feel life has got to be more amusing than it currently is...then read and enjoy!

2-0 out of 5 stars Ummm... what is everyone raving about?
I unfortunaely am not like every other person who has read this book . I too am one of those "Hippie" moms (not the worst thing in the world to be called, but I am insulted nonetheless)- although there are a few cute anectdotes in this book that make me smile I can only say that is why I gave this book two stars instead of one.
