5-0 out of 5 stars The book I wish I hadwritten
I am a play therapist, author of "The Successful Divorce, In The Eyes of the Child" course and have taught parenting divorced for nine years. This is the book that says it all. The authors teach in clear logical manner how to co parent your children. They are sensitive to the pain both parents and children feel post divorce and teach how to proceed in parenting. I frequently use sections of their book in teaching to remind parents that they must still work together enough to meet children's needs. This is a concise book, no long drawn out narratives or tales of others pain... just the facts and how to avoid the pitfalls. I and the children of divorce, owe these authors a huge thank you.Their new book is also great,

when i divorced two years ago, reasonably contentiously and with a four year old daughter, the best advice i got was to read this book.i did, with highlighter in hand, and found it absolutely invaluable.i continue to this day to consider it absolutely invaluable!such that, i just ordered a gift copy for my brother and his new wife, to help them with my niece and her co-parent.that gift brings the total i've purchased for others up to five.its an unfortunate reality that there will probably be more in the future, but the book helps immensely and so there will be gifts.

I went through a high-conflict divorce in Connecticut in 2004, complete with restraining orders, police, and the whole 9 yards. As I saw the divorce approaching, I researched a great deal of divorce/parenting literature on my own, hoping to find a framework of something my (soon-to-be) ex and I could agree to work with, and I found this book.I read it and gave a copy to my ex.I also found an divorce/custody attorney who would focus on our children's interests, and his very first recommendation was to get this book and see Dr. Thayer in her practice jointly with my ex.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I am a professional counselor and this book was recommended to me by another professional counselor.I find it very helpful in working with children of all ages.I even use some of the techniques on my oldest child who has some anxious behaviors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for parents
This book is one of the best I've seen in terms of describing how anxiety works and providing tips to combat it. It is written clearly and plainly and even includes some illustrations that make it very easy to understand why kids with anxiety have difficulty with certain tasks. This book gave me hope for how I could help my two sons with anxiety. It made me feel empowered by giving me concrete advice that I could use at home and pass on to their teachers at school. This is required reading for anyone who has anxiety themselves or is trying to helping someone else who does.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Grief Recovery Handbook
As a grief facilitator, this is my one and only text for my participants. It is wonderful!

4-0 out of 5 stars Add this book to your Grief Toolbox
I found this handbook to be helpful, informative, and full of "aha" moments. There was much that I could relate to, especially the lists of commonly heard advice (misinformed, though well-meaning) intended by others as consolation. For example, I was comforted to learn that I wasn't the only one who found the comment "They lived a long life" to be insipid, irritating, and irrelevant.I really liked the authors' simple writing style and clear, concise instructions. The only potential downside to this book is that its effectiveness will be limited if you are working through your grief alone. Many of the exercises are intended to be done with a partner, and although the authors revised the book to include alternatives for those working alone, it's just not the same.As in PTSD work, much of the healing comes from the act of verbalizing thoughts and feelings to a trusted ally.Unfortunately, many of us - especially those who have been ostracized or have chosen a path of isolation - do not have this luxury.Still, I would recommend adding this book to your grief toolbox.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK!
This is probably one of the best books you could ever read in order to become emotionally complete about ANY kind of loss or grief. If you want to take this a step further attend the Grief Recovery Workshop conducted by the author of this book, Russell Friedman, in Sherman Oaks, CA.What a life changing experience!www.grief.net ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The must-read book for sisters
When I review a book, I usually have a copy right next to the computer, so I can refer to key passages and even quote a few lines. But this time I don't because I gave away my review copy right after I read it. I have a friend who's very close to her two sisters and I knew she'd enjoy reading this book. And I just ordered a gift copy to give a professional associate who's very close to her own sister.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is your chance to tell your own story
This is the best possible gift that you could give your grandchild - very charming illustrations, with lots of room for pictures and your own comments and doodles - and just the right questions to elicit the story of your own life - this is the gift that all grandchildren should really want - the story of their grandmother told in her own words about what she was like as a girl, a teenager, a young woman - all those things that the pictures alone don't tell.It is not only a gift for your grandchild, but also for your son or daughter, who may not know these things about you.I gave this as a gift to other friends and family members who I knew would also want to share these thoughts and memories with a beloved grandchild.I just wish my grandmothers had given this gift to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grandmother Remembers
I purchased this book first in about 1982 for a "future" grandchild.I simply fell in love with the illustrations.I found it very easy to fill in the various categories about myself and my family.Eventually, when my first grandchild was born in 1991, I completed the sections which referred specifically to him.My grandson loves to read "his" book from Gramma. My granddaughter loves hers too.I keep several copies of Grandmother Remembers on hand to use as gifts for expectant grandmothers or for my own future grandchildren.I highly recommend this book to all Grandmothers or expectant Grandmothers. You will enjoy remembering things from your childhood and family as you complete the pages. Most of all, you will enjoy sharing this information with your grandchild.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure!!!
My parents bought this book for my grandma when I was little. She filled it out and gave it to me when I turned 13, 2 years after my grandfather went home to the Lord.It is a treasure to me.I love reading through it and can't wait to show it to my daughter when she gets older.I am close to my grandma, but this book helped me learn so much more about her, my great-grandparents, and my grandpa. The part I love most is "What your grandfather would want you to know" -- he would want me to know that he was very proud of me.I still get teary-eyed even thinking about it.

Another great book by Joshua Harris. This is a must read for both ladies and gentlemen who are considering dating or courting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Principles for Relationships
There is not much I can say that has not already been said but Joshua Harris' books were very helpful to me. 'Boy meets Girl' and 'I Kissed dating Goodbye' helped me to put my life into perspective and showed me where I've been going wrong and what I've been doing right in terms of dating and friendship.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the courage of this child
It Seems like everyone is trying to compare him with his brother. It shouldn't matter who got beaten the worse, their both strong and brave because they survived. I think the brothers should have help each other alot more. And their dad was a disgrace. It's just ashamed the community let this happen, And did not put her in jail for all the harsh stuff she did and they also had proof of it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Following his brothers footsteps
I read all of David's books and was very moved..however Richard's seemed to hit alot of the same incidents..in either case I can't believe no one ever spoke up to help..I do feel David's books were better written .. I feel bad anyone would have to go through life as they did.. I wouldn't pass this book as I feel it almost reads the same as David's

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing story
This book was amazing. The hell Richard Pelzer and his brother David were put through makes you wonder how a mother could ever harm their child. I couldn't put this book down as I couldn't put David Pelzer's books down either. As soon as I recieved the book in the mail, I started to read it and was done in 2 days, which was disappointing because now I have nothing to read! Order this book, you won't be disappointed! ... My favorite is Mary Higgins Clark who closes her story with her visit to Ireland to discover the barn where her dad (who died when she was 11) was raised, running her fingers over her dad's carved names in the old oak barn door.Have some tissues nearby when you read the many captivating, emotional memories!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I love it so far!
Im not a big reader, but when I realized my marriage needed help I was willing to read every book I could get my hands on if it would help. Im just in the third chapter of this one but I can already see a difference inmy communication with others and I cant wait to keep reading! What I really like about this book is the way it's written. It seems as though Mr Gottman writes as if he were speaking in converstation and adds a bit of humor as well. I am really enjoying this book! 4 stars just because im not done with it yet, but I think it will be a 5!

This book is so simple yet, so true.I like the fact that the content came out of real observations of people. The steps are clearly grounded in reality... not just theory about the way people behave.

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed my Life
I have NEVER been a person who believed that a self-help book could change your life. But this one changed mine! I read this book years ago (I am buying it now for a friend). I was in my 30's and I was still intimidated by my mother's manipulation. This book made me slap my forehead and say to myself "why on earth have I put up with this for so long???!!If ever a book liberated me, this book did. It showed me that it takes two to tango. If I didn't like the way my mother acted, there wasn't much I could do to change her behavior. However, I COULD change the way I responded - I could refuse to "dance the dance." For any adult who feels intimated or bullied by a parent, this is the book to read. Highly recommended!

3-0 out of 5 stars Parents of adults are themselves adults, and should act it.
Parents of adults are themselves adults - so making excuses for their obnoxious or hurtful behavior does not to me create an incentive for them to change it.3-0 out of 5 stars Simplified solutions
The book was very complete since it included mostly every parental abusive situation from moralistic parents to unavailable to self-centered and controlling. However, the solutions given for children to address the damage done to them is over-simplified and puts the responsibility of understanding back on to the child. Every chapter has an explanation of the type of behavor and goes on to indicate how it is the child in the parent who is really reponding to his/her child or adult child. To solve the hurt and enmeshment with the parent, the adult-child must now see the child in the parent when the dysfunctional behavior takes place and everything will be okay. Also, Halpern chooses a parent for each behavior. For example, the unavailable "father" and the controlling "father." Perhpas the domineering, controlling person is the "mother." This adjudication makes it harder to see since I must substitute one for the other throughout full chapters. ... Read more

I've listened to the audio version of this book and I found it to be insightful and enlightening.I've also read the other reviews about this book and-well it is obvious that is just isn't for every one.Speaking to anyonymous about recovered memories, I have to say that I disagree completely.I am a victim of childhood abuse (not incest.I dissociated those memories and from time to time I acted them out(described as re-enactment by those who have studied PTSD).No Psychologist has told me this and in fact I went to prison because I refused to go to mental health after being court ordered to do so, specifically because I did not want them manipulating me or my thoughts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Illuminating
With an emphasis on words and the associations we make with them, Rogers unveils how some children continue to re-experience and re-live past trauma.First, she describes her own childhood crises in a narrative that is both revealing and intimate. She describes her state in ways that allow one to experience it as she had, instead of something simply as foreign and "over with."Then, through example, we follow her as she tries to understand what the children's gestures and words are trying to "say" without their being able to verbalize it.However, she uses the children's own meanings of things (instead of simply standard symbolic meanings) to re-explain to them what has happened and how it continues to persist in their lives, unwittingly. This is what keeps it fresh and real. Moreover, throughout the book, there is an unstated underlying stream of empathy and relatedness. A great book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique book documenting an amazing journey
We received this book from my father-in-law as a gift after we announced my wife's pregnancy. It was really a very good choice for a gift to expectant parents.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Child Is Born
The photographs in this new edition are amazing.I bought the book for my daughter, since I had followed her development in the edition I purchased in 1980.Every expectant mother should have this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book.
This is such a great book.It helped my 6 year-old son prepare for his little brother. He was so amazed by all the pictures that he actually wanted to watch his brother be born.Later on I was able to pass the book on to a friend who was pregnant for the first time. The book is so good I had to buy another one.I would recommend this book to everyone. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Book for Caregives
There are many books on how to care and plan for an elderly person, but this is one of the few designed to deal with the often delicate issue of communicating about those plans. This is an excellent book for anyone caring for seniors, either as a family member or in a professional capacity. I am a legal aid hotline attorney and own an online medical supply business. In both capacities I work with many seniors and those who care for them. This book fills in an important gap in the caregiving relationship.I strongly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars How to Say it to Seniors
Very helpful and accessable information.Wish I'd learned about this years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humane, wise, practical...SUPERB
It's shocking that this book is being marketed merely to professionals who must deal with the vagaries of the senior personality. It's simply the best book on the subject I've read. The author has a huge heart for seniors and those who work with them--professionals, certainly, but also neighbors, friends, children, grandchildren.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a lifesaver.
I have purchased 15 copies of this book. One for every mother of young children that I know.It has completely changed the way I parent and the way my daughter respondes to me.It has reduced the tension in our home and I feel the need to reccomend it to everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless, Thought-Provoking, Effective
After two months of working on our kids we've concluded that this book works. Our 4 and 2 1/2 year old children had been easygoing and sweet toddlers who one day just became unmanageable and we couldn't understand why. My husband and I found ourselves constantly disciplining them and losing our tempers. Our "tactics" were failing, and we felt guilty at how angry and resentful we were becoming toward our children.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful roadmap to parenting
As a new parent, who really didn't know what to do to raise a child, this book has given me some great principles that are humane and sensible to follow.I love that it is centered on respect for the child, and giving him or her the right to make their own decisions.I like that it gives me rights too.I have been reading and re-reading this book regularly since my son was 18 months old, and now that he is three years old, he is independent and helpful. He's also a little terror at times, but this book helps me deal with agression, tantrums, defiance. It helps keep me calm, and even when offering him tough choices (Do you want to stop throwing sand or do you want me to carry you home?) I do it in a friendly way, where I am really interested in the answer. It's truly up to him, and I feel happy that the choice is his to make, and I can live with either. He may scream and shout, but he clearly feels the fairness in it, because he gets over it so quickly. In contrast, where I do lose my temper occasionally, and am then unfairly dictatorial in my attitude, he doesn't get over it so quickly. But he seems to respond to the respect inherent in the guidelines in this book.If you are not sure how to be a parent, this is a great foundation book, and I recommend it beyond words. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably insightful, powerful, helpful
This book moved me enough to actually write this review, not something I would normally do.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
A must-read, but as previously stated by others, this is not a quick easy read. It requires careful studying. You will get the most out of it if you keep a journal and do the exercises Mr. Richo suggests. I also recommend keeping a dictionary by your side as you read. This is not a superficial treatment of the topic. I also agree with others that this book is best for someone over 40. You need to have some knowledge about the nature of relationships already and in life in general. If you are ready to hear the message in this book, then, this will be one of those books that changes your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars By god I love this man
I find the act of reading books by David Richo comforting in itself. In some ways it feels like his writings are just one long mantra. As if he is saying the same thing over and over and so for the duration of your reading it feels almost like a blissful meditation... and so long as you are reading his words, you feel comforted and as if you can handle whatever the world brings you.The challenge of course is to translate this feeling into practice in your day to day life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful to use as a tool in healing or therapy
This book was an easy read and helps the reader to see what happens to the entire family when an affair takes place. It also shows how both marital partners need to make changes in their thoughts and actions after the affair is over to progress to a higher level of intimacy and that the recovery process is not short or easy.I would recommend it to couples who are in therapy and/or are considering reconciling.

5-0 out of 5 stars I should have read this book sooner.
Two years after my own husband had an affair I came across this book.It has been so helpful. It is proof that affairs happen even in "great" marriages, and that, although the journey back is hellish, it is possible and well worth all the work and pain.Lots of love and hugs to you, dear friend and fellow reader. You are not alone and this book will become like a warm and friendly conversation with Anne, Brian, and their daughter on how to get back to just being "us" again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
I couldn't put this book down. I recently experienced the betrayalof my husband having an affair. I gained a lot of knowlegde from this book that I can apply to my own situation. I loved that it was written from not only the betrayed spouse's point of view, but also included excerpts from her husband and daughter. I disagree with the reviewer who said that you wouldn't like this book if you aren't into religion. I am not "into" reglion, but still loved this book! ... Read more
