5-0 out of 5 stars A must read! Highly recommended!
I just finished this book about 20 minutes ago. During the past two weeks I read all 3 books in this series. My heart broke during the first book as I read a trageic story that no child should ever have to experience. During the second book I cheered Pelzer on as he was slowly recovering and sometimes even enjoying life. I almost didn't read the 3rd book in the series, because I was confident that Pelzer's life turned out well. However, I just couldn't stop myself from wanting to know how it all ended.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
The end of the trilogy. I finally got my head around part of what makes him so compelling. If you read what the marketers put together, you may think this is gloomy and such. Nope. It's about how he survived, and is therefore inspiring. But what finally comes together for me in this conclusion is the author's refusal to let me hate his mother the way I'd like to. Damn, life would be easier that way. Pelzer's no saint, mind you. He's human too. But dang, I really did want him to let me hate his mother. You can learn a lot from this guy, even if you do hate his mother.

3-0 out of 5 stars For more "advanced" moms
I think this would be a great book, but I feel it spoke more to moms who are done having kids and have older kids. This is just my take on it. I have one child and one on the way, so it didn't appeal to me as much as I thought it would. I mean, although I'm not done having kids, I still want to "get my groove back"! :-)

2-0 out of 5 stars Awful book- her husband should be mortified
....since she makes him look like the worst man alive. Anecdotes about how she has to beg him to do his part as a father and how he negatively reacts to her pregnancies really set my teeth on edge. Am I the only woman alive whose husband truly cherishes his role as a father? Even worse, I put 2 and 2 together and realized the man in question is none other then THE Jimmy Iovine, famous producer. Is THAT how she was able to get this drivel published? I agree with the previous reviewer who noted the overabundance of run on sentences as well. Don't waste your money on this book:The Iovines have plenty as it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vicki is at it again.
I have read all of her books. Her humorous writing has helped to save my sanity during the mommy years. Her brutal honesty about raising children is much appreciated in a society that fails to acknowledge the true challenge that parenting is. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for all Dads of Daughters
This is a book to be read and re-read at various stages of your daughter's life.It provides encouragement, insight and a fresh perspective on the girl or girls in your charge -- as well as some insight into your wife. Whenever friends tell me that they are pregnant with a girl, this is the gift I give.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful information!
My husband is a great dad. I gave this to him as a birthday gift. He loved it! He read it in 2 weeks. He is now an even greater dad!!!!!!! I advise you to buy this for any DAd you know who has a girl. Dads sometimes underestimate the power they have to shape their little girls. Your little girl will be formed by her Dad r/to: future jobs, relationships, life skills, choosing a mate, the list goes on and on. Yes, as a mom, I read it too! Buy it today!!!! P.S. Our little girl is 6 years old.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must
Ive been looking around for a book that gives insight to that father/daughter relationship, this is the book for it PERIOD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Book For Singles
Ignore the negative reviews about this book. Dr. Gary Chapman has done a great job at helping single people find their love language in this book. I used it for small group bible study class & for devotional reading. It helped me connect with my christian & non christian friends, co-workers, family members, etc. in much a better way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not near the quality of the original
The original Five Love Languages was insightful, had a variety of examples and provided a good amount of psychological and Christian theory and application. This book is supposed to be for singles, but almost every example has to do with dating couples--people I don't really consider single.Rarely does it talk about regular friendship--and when it does, it's guy-girl friendships.I was hoping to get some insight into my same-sex friendships, family relationships and guy-girl non-romantic friendships, but this book falls horribly short of that.Get the original copy and just use a little imagination and brain-power to apply it to your single life. You'll save the time, money and frustration.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Five Love Languages for Singles
This is an excellent book and I would recommend this to anyone. It really opens up your eyes on relationships and how they should work.I think that everyone should read this before getting married!!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars WHY MARRIAGES SUCCEED OR FAIL: AND HOW YOU CAN MAKE YOURS LAST
Not as useful as his later work

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as well written as the companion book by the author
This book is very similar to "The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work : A Practical Guide from the Country's Foremost Relationship Expert".It almost seems like a first draft of the other book. Not as well organized or clearly written. It is a very good book, but I would recommend "The Seven Principles" over this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites
This is one of my favorite relationship books. It really focuses on communication, and gives you real guidance on what to do, and what to watch out for, in your communication with your spouse.I asked my husband to read it after I had, and he very grudgingly accepted.Once he started reading it, however, he was quite impressed, and had many highlighters and sticky notes on his favorite parts.I highly recommend. Also, I suggest this over his "Seven Principles" book which I have also read. This seems more to be the real deal, and the "Seven Principles" more of a spin off. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Really Great Book
If you want to know the history of your parents or grand parents on a more personal level this is a great book to have. It would be nice to have a CD included to type on the computer, because not everyone has the best hand writing

2-0 out of 5 stars Book ?'s Too Focused on Emotional Rather Than Factual Data
I bought this book for my 62-year-old mother and my 95-year-old great-aunt to fill out so that I could keep a written document of their memories. Both separately told me the same thing - that the book asked far too personal of questions. Neither was willing to fill it out.It asked questions about their feelings about their childhood, feelings about marriage, etc.I had not wanted to record their feelings, but rather more historical type of data such as the cost of bread, the local scenery when it was all orchards, etc.If the book were full of more factually-based questions as opposed to emotionally-based, it would be more suitable.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Way to Preserve Memories
My grandparents are elderly. One evening my grandfather was recounting an interesting story about his father that we had never heard before - it suddenly dawned on me that there may be many more wonderful stories that we may never hear.I searched and searched for a journal or diary that they could use to preserve these memories and stumbled across this Journal.First of all it is a beautiful hard-bound book - truly a keepsake.Inside is is divided into logical sections and provides a good mix of questions as well as space for additional thoughts, pictures or memories.I really liked that it had questions that covered all parts of my grandparents lives (i.e. growing up, high school, college, military etc) - they don't have to fill out every section - but at least it gives them some guidance.I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in preserving their family history.A beautiful gift. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful to learn about attachment
This was one of many books I have been reading regarding attachment. This book had my sons name written all over it.I am a mother of a foreign adopted son with many issues ahead. This has by far been the best one I have found. It showed examples of problems along with a recommended solution to correcting the behavior. We are now seeing some much needed changes in our household.I highly recommend this selection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
Daniel Hughes really understands children with RAD! I especially would recommend this book for parents adopting or doing foster care.

5-0 out of 5 stars highly recommend
We recently adopted a 9 yr old boy. This book helped me understand the source of his behavior and have more compassion. There weren't a lot of methods to help me cope, but I hope his other book will have that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't stop reading this!
I read this through when I was pregnant with my 4 months old twins. And I thought it was cute and interesting. But once they got here I have become desperate for any advice on how to handle twins.I have re-read this book dozens of times!! Trying to figure out sleeping habits, what to do for schedules, and reassureance from other twin moms that at the 3 month old mark it will get better. The things that I giggled at the most have held the most truth for me.Like, 'you should never microwave formula'.....'But you will, we all do and its o.k.' If you are haveing twins you need a sense of humor and THIS BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful hints
This book was not only very funny but also very helpful. It kept my attention the whole time I was reading it.I couldn't put it down. I did not know what to expect with twins.I already had a little girl (who is now 7) and even then when she was a baby I did not know how to handle her.Elizabeth (the author of this book) gives great tips and hints on how to deal with and cope with having 2 babies at one time!I would recommend this book to anyone who is expecting twins or more.I would even recommend this book for someone who is only expecting one child. The tips and hints she gives do aim more at a mother of twins (being a mother of twins herself), however, the tips she gives would work just as well with a single child. Please take the time to read the excerpt of this book.It will not only make you laugh, but it will make you want to read more.If you are an expecting mother (of any amount of babies) I would strongly recommend reading this book! I myself have already read it more then once!

3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been better...
Home on bedrest and expecting twins in the fall, I have been doing a lot of reading this summer.I have a 3 year old and purchased this book to help me prepare for our new additions. As others have written, it's just not as good as it could be.There are certainly funny parts and useful suggestions. However, much of the book reads as a diary of the author's experiences rather than a summary of approaches and objective recommendations. Certainly, not as witty and well-written as the "Girlfriend's Guide" series. That said, it is a fast read with some useful information on twins that your generic "what to expect" pregnancy books won't have. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional book- very healing
As a grown woman who has been puzzled and confused by my relationship with my mother for 30+ years this book was an enormous relief. Clearly written, not assigning blame, not overly complex. It was incredibly validating to a person found their entire childhood, teenage years and young adult life in plain simple words.A tremendous relief just to know that I am not alone in experiencing the criticism, sharp words, irritability, and outright competition and that it was undeserved. The information alone has provided an enormous perspective on my own behaviors and attitudes and why they developed as coping mechanisms or byproducts of that unhealthy relationship. Just the knowledge that those attitudes and beliefs are a normal response to what I experienced inspires me to make changes that will lead to the kind of life I want.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
I am quite sure this book has saved me thousands of dollars in therapy. The book does an excellent job of describing what narcissistic behavior (the bad kind) really is and how it impacts those who are raised by narcissists. It offers some very empowering information. Most importantly... clearly stating that narcissists will never change and acknowledge the hurtful things they do to their children because they are not capable of seeing their children as individual beings AND that it is okay to protect yourself against the hurt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
During my own course of therapy, I discovered that my mother was most likely a narcisstistic parent. I picked up this book and my mom fit the descriptions to a 'T.' The information is presented extrememly well, very organized - much better than other books on the topic. And it validated some of the issues I'm dealing with personally in therapy. The tone is gentle and reassuring, but not coddling. I felt like finally, somebody understood what I had been dealing with all my life. There are exercises to help you deal with overcoming issues - I've done a couple and shown them to my therapist. If you have a parent like this, wow, it's very difficult to handle the repercussions. But this book really will help. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Those who have read it usually have two comments: I wish I had read this book years ago, and this book is the only thing that has really helped my relationship with this person. This insightful book was recommended to me by people I work with as a pathway inside the minds of people with BPD.Paul Mason helped me to understand why sufferers of this disorder do the things they do, and how to effectively deal with them. It is an excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-saver when I felt desperate!
This book was a total life-saver for me when I was in a really desperate situation. I am a straightforward, honest, responsible, compassionate and unfortunately naive guy who cannot say not if somebody needs help. People with borderline features are very needy and may drain you until you feel like a wreck, and beyond. (If you are in love, you are twice as vulnerable!) This book explains you what is going on and helps you recognize that you are not crazy and that although the other person may be charming and miserable at once, you must not neglect yourself. If you are feeling desperate, check out the BPD central webpage (by the book author) immediately and read this book within days or weeks. If you feel that you got back some control, consider reading "Codependent No More" by Melody Beattie. She will explain you how to improve your own life and how to avoid self-defeating patterns in the future. Both books have helped me in a very difficult private situation, but now I am also using the knowledge in the workplace, it is quite universal.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but dont agree with labels
Definitely an accurate and knowledgeable approach to this common array of symptoms.Personally I do not choose to label those individulas that are struggling with life.I actually choose to work with them and discover their true beings. Some of the most creative and wonderful human beings I have worked with have been diagnosed with BPD and unfortunately made worse by this label. ... I am a family lawyer and this book is one of the best that I have read.

5-0 out of 5 stars It saved my soul
I have been abused again and again - over and over and overby practically everyone in my life - friends, family, teachers, and lovers.I always felt like I was a magnet for hurt and deception. One day I looked at myself in the mirror and I wasn't there - my soul was gone - in hiding.I had to do something - I walked to the bookstore since my husband had taken away the keys to the car - another example of EMOTIONAL ABUSE - and I found this book.I read it cover to cover and changed my life. Now I have the weapons to stop any emtional abuse.now I am the agressor - and my soul is back - and dancing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some good stories, a few misses
Russert has distilled a large number of readers' letters into a very readable book. There are a number of truly inspiring stories in this collection. There are, however, a few that were disappointing.I also found a few admittedly minor items rather annoying: the commentary by Russert at the start of each story doesn't really add much; and the chapter on baseball should have been named "The Yankees", as Russert manages to ignore just about every other team in the sport in favor of the pinstripes.Still, it's enjoyable to read some of the many ways that fathers influence their children's lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars A How To book if ever there was one
Take the choicest moment in your life with your dad, a scene or words spoken that truly personify all that is your own father, multiply that by a thousand, and you have "Wisdom of Our Father's".

5-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't get better than this book.
In this excellent workbook, Laura Davis shows each survivor of child abuse {of all kinds}how to turn the traumatic and the shocking into the simple and the ordinary. A thorough and very important book championing the quiet and personal recovery of the child and the adult while advocating for the social recovery of a society stuck in its own ignorance and injury. Very simply, every man and women needs to own this book.

Just as The Courage to Heal was my Bible in helping me get through the crisis stage of sexual abuse revisited, helping me to decipher what it was I was feeling, and that it was perfectly normal, probably more normal than anything in my life ever had been, and letting me know what I may be going through next, and how people might react to me, ect.....This Courage to Heal Workbook is my homework in learning to become the person I should have started out as. I do a chapter a day, but you can do it a chapter a week, or at your own pace. Pre-reading The Courage to Heal is not necessary, either. It's all self-explanatory. Encourages one to give lots of deep thought to differing topics and to answer honestly and in depth. I strongly recommend this workbook to anyone struggling to heal the wounds of childhood sexual abuse. It allows you to get to know the real you inside all of the protective layers that have been unconsciencously piled on over the years....not who you want people to know, but who you really are, and who you were really meant to be.A bright shining star!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is hard work but good
I am not sure why people whose lives are being "ruined" or hurt by "unfounded" repressed memories are being so hard on the authors of this book.Sounds like the psychiatric professionals that their loved one or they themselves are seeing need to be held to task for the "bringing forth the memories" problem - not the authors of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL Reading
Dr. Warshak has done his homework, and is dedicated to diminishing parental alienation. Well researched, well-written, I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you are suspecting parental alienation, if you are a good parent, if you believe your kids should have two parents involved in their life....read this book. Do NOT let yourself slide into a secondary parenting role just because your ex or soon-to-be ex is using the kids to hurt or belittle you. Do everything you can to avoid putting your kids in the middle of your divorce. Way beyond Five Stars!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Proceed With Caution
Just like all the others who are damaged and angry, my friend's ex told her kids terrible things about her. Her attorney decided to focus on PAS as their primary custody issue using Dr. Gardner's work as a base. It went very wrong. The judge didn't buy it. My friend was a great mom and now she has lost custody and can only see her children during supervised visitation.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Accurate
As an adult child who was alienated from my father by my mother I can attest to Dr. Warshak's amazing accuracy in defining parental alienation, and its devastating impact on all involved.Dr. Warshak's suggestion that parents who are the victim of alienation not sit by passively is wonderful advice. This is a must read for all who is going through a divorce, or are divorced and believe they may be the victim of a vindictive ex-spouse who cannot separate their feelings from those of their children. The information and advice is invaluable and quite likely will serve to save your relationship with your children. ... Editorial Review

Do you think your child is special? Well, perhaps he or she is! Self-help professionals Lee Carroll and Jan Tober have collected essays by dozens of doctors, counselors, and other childhood experts that seem to document the arrival on earth of a newly evolved species of human kiddie referred to here as an "indigo" child. The 10 most common traits are: 1.) They come into the world with a feeling of royalty. 2.) They have a feeling of deserving to be here. 3.) Self-worth is not a big issue. 4.) They have difficulty with authority by ritual or without explanation. 5.) They simply will not do certain things. 6.) They get frustrated with systems that don't require creative thought. 7.) They often see better ways of doing things. 8.) School is often difficult for them and they can seem antisocial. 9.) They will not respond to guilt-trip discipline. 10.) They are not shy about letting you know what they need. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Half-baked... just like "gifted child" programs, no support for adults?
The problem I have with a book like this isn't necessarily the premise. I agree there are some kids with a profound amount of energy, intuition, and desire to change the world. The problem I do have is with the movements as a whole, that fill a kid's head with extremely lofty ideas... and then what?

He spends all his time pushing his agenda...
3-0 out of 5 stars I expected something more substantial...
I do believe we are living the indigo children era. However, I think the book brings just a superficial view of the subject. It's a simple compilation of testimonials. It could have gone deeper on the indigo's phenomenon and its spiritual characteristics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars When a relationship ends, it feels like a car wreck!
When a relationship ends, it feels like a car wreck! Everything hurts, your days become longer your nights become lonelier and the inevitable question of why comes up. Why did that person leave? Why wasn't I good enough? Why didn't I see it coming? Why does it hurt so badly? Why can't I stop the pain? An endless stream seems to conquer your will to move on to the next level of a better tomorrow.
3-0 out of 5 stars Get the second edition!!!
This is a good book, but I found it strange the way that Alberti always talks about Bruce Fisher's ideas in the third person. And in a couple of instances, he even contradicts Fisher's teachings! Better to just get it straight from the horse's mouth, in my opinion! Bruce Fisher is the sole author of the first and second editions. THOSE books get five stars!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading For Husbands and Fathers
Alright, besides being a great read for women, the book should be required reading for husbands, brothers, and fathers of sisters and mothers...(hey, that's all of us?)
3-0 out of 5 stars Okay if you read textbooks for pleasure
There was some interesting information in the book, but it was a pretty dry read overall. Most of my book club didn't make it past the first 25 pages, and only two of us finished it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Amazon rip off
