4-0 out of 5 stars helpful for parents
As a professional counselor, I was interested in specific ideas on helping parents & children of divorce. This book had some very concrete ideas. It is aimed at parents, written in 'plain-speak'.There's nothing new or eath-shaking here, but it is a pretty all-inclusive little book for parents interested in helping their children deal with the issue of divorce.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview
It's a good overview, but I needed more situational type information. How to work through the tough disagreements with a spouse who is unwilling to meet on common ground. How to deal with younger children and how it impacts them.I did take away some good advice, but most of the book is common sense.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reminder of what's important
The questions in this book allow the reader to muse on their own relationships with their parents and others close to them, and hopefully to realise how important it is to make time to communicate within families.Buy it to read, think and keep it visible on your bookshelf as a reminder of what is important and that there is always time to talk to those close to you, however busy you think you are.

5-0 out of 5 stars A dark ride
At first glance I thought this was just another "quick-fix" book offering [bad] platitudes about the quest to reveal the mythical father-figure. 5-0 out of 5 stars Questions for My father: finding the man behind your dad

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun!
My husband has been reading it, and I've been sneaking peeks at it, and it's lots of fun.I think it's helping him understand a little more what I am going through right now, but then again, it takes some Cavemen a while to get in touch with their noncaveman side.=)He's getting there, and I think the book is definately helping him do that.I especially like the Dr. Brian tidbits.I'm learning a few things I didn't even know.=)=)

5-0 out of 5 stars A accurate and hysterical account of the experience
This is the mens version of the Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy series.Hysterical but painfully accurate which can bring any hormonally driven pregnant man to tears just to know that he is not alone in his weight gain and morning sickness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Experienced Caveman Father
I picked up this book for a friend of mine who is expecting his first child. While I am a veteran of the pregnancy and child birth process, I decided to hold onto the book for a bit and check it out.Dave and JR have hit a home run with this realistic and quite humerous guide to being a pregnancy companion.I especially enjoyed the list of "What Not To Do in the Delivery Room" as I definitely violated some of the caveman rules and paid dearly for it.Fellow cavemen, this is a must read.Enjoy! ... Editorial Review

Nationally acclaimed speaker and memoir writer Clifton Taulbert presents eight habits that build the essence of social stability. His habits, which are broken down into brief chapters--"A Nurturing Attitude," "Dependability," "Responsibility," "Friendship," "Brotherhood," "High Expectations," "Courage," and "Hope"--may not be stunningly original, yet they reflect a kind of plainspoken "front-porch wisdom" rooted in Taulbert's Southern upbringing. His elders ignored the boundaries of legal segregation and embarked on a campaign to offer a community that embraced the dreams and successes of each child and family. This is an excellent book for young-adult readers who will appreciate the rich, memoir-style storytelling and the simple but genuine lessons of how to be a good person in order to build a more spiritually evolved world. 3-0 out of 5 stars Chicken Soup, Kugle and some home spun advice
Sharon Strassfeld's work is autobiographical, yet conveys to her children some of the history and good advice which she thinks they need to be successful in life.Other than keep your priorities around family and someJewishy values, almost no where does one see anything about the children'sfather, as if he never existed, which the reader would be excused if he/shecame to that conclusion.4-0 out of 5 stars a well-written book from a mother's heart
what a shame that one of the reviewers gave this lovely book only one star because the author, a Jew, advised her children to not seek a marriage outside the faith. 1990's, 1890's - it does not matter. I am not Jewish, but I teach religion on the university level. The number one nail in thecoffin of Judaism is, in my opinion, intermarriage. Studies have shown thatthe majority of children raised in Jewish/Christian homes do not becomereligious Jews. Because the writer is a Gentile female, her children arenot considered Jews at all except bythe most liberal congregations andwould have to convert if they ever did choose their father's religion.Ithought this book was charming and liked the down to earth writing style ofthe mother. I bought it for my Jewish sister in law (who converted formarriage) and she loved it as well. If you never had a Jewish mamma at hometo confer with, or if you'd like to get another mamma's p.o.v. this book isgreat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Mother's Day gift
It's the perfect gift for the daughter or daughter-in-law in your life. This amusing and realistic set of incidents illustrates the dynamics of extended family life from a grandmother's viewpoint. It will make the reader laugh and cry. It's more than a one-time read. It's the book you will look at over the years to always find a new insight into living with grandchildren and their parents. "Perfect grandmas" always buy this book for adult children and their spouses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift for New Grandmom
I bought this book and fell down laughing, so I bought it for all my friends, new grandmas, experienced grandmas, even one grandma-to-be.The author has shared her anecdotes and they are hysterical. In the mix, are tips on grandmothering and advice on how to follow the rules laid down by our grandchildren's parents without losing our minds. If you like humor with an edge, you'll love this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars I beg to differ...this book is not that funny
I bought this book, planning to give it to my mother-in-law, who is a grandmother-to-be (I'm 3 months pregnant). It had gotten positive reviews from others, and sounded cute and humorous. After reading it, however, I did not find it cute or humorous. It is basically a collection of one grandmother's anecdotes about two of her grandkids, along with quasi-generalized advice about being a grandmother.I understand that some of the book was meant to be written with a satirical tone, but advice such as, "never let anything bad happen to the kids on your watch...but as we all know bad things happen to good grandmothers...if it's just you and the child, lie," and "check with your grandchildren to make sure you are winning the grandma race [against the child's other grandma]...if...they say they like the other one better, buy them something they've been wanting..." just doesn't strike me as being very funny--more like irresponsible and mean-spirited.I suppose some readers will find this humorous, but this definitely is not my brand of humor. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Reassuring, not depressing
I read the negative reveiws of this book before I had my baby, and decided against buying it.Then, after my baby was born, I was frustrated with baby books that made me feel like the way I was feeling and the way I was doing things was all wrong, and I was hungry for anything that was written for new mothers (sadly, this was about it).I have to say, this book was the only thing that made me feel like I wasn't crazy, and that there wasn't anything wrong with me because I was having a hard time.I guess motherhood came easy for those people who wrote such scathing reveiws, but even though my baby is the best thing that ever happened to me, some days I can't stop crying and wondering how I will do this for the rest of my life.Yes, you will be sleep deprived, and your baby may cry for what seems like no reason, and it will break your heart and you will wonder if you are cut out for this whole motherhood thing. At least, that's how I feel, and thank God for this book so I know I'm not alone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Total Garbage!
This book is pretty near worthless. I started reading it knowing that I was unlikely to agree with much of Vicki's "advice," but I thought it still might be funny. It wasn't. Also, lots of her advice is not only wrong it is *completely* wrong--as in, not only not backed up by evidence, but actually *contraindicated* by evidence. I could not even finish reading the book after I got to the complete drivel that was her "advice" on infant feeding--she presented the section as "common considerations when deciding to breastfeed" and then proceeded to describe the absolute worst-case-scenario for everything possibly related to breastfeeding (& several things that can't be blamed on breastfeeding at all!). It was a common considerations section, but would have been more aptly named, "reasons I think breastfeeding is awful and no one should do it" section.
1-0 out of 5 stars very few mothers could relate to any ofthis!
This was the most useless book I have ever read on being a parent. The author goes on and on about how painful and excruciating breastfeeding is, and how all "girlfriends" can relate to this pain if they are breastfeeding.Huh??If she had read any books on breastfeeding at all or gotten some basic advice from a lactation consultant, she would realize that her baby was latched on incorrectly and would have corrected the problem. Also, she talks about girlfriends hiding from their husbands in the house so that they can breastfeed? What?!?!This book just infuriated me, it was so shallow and pointless, I feel like the author lives in a world all her own, inhabited by stepford wife-like "girlfriends" who struggle incessantly with mothering a new baby and have to hide everything from their dumb husbands who are completely incompetent. How insulting!!Don't waste your time or money on this garbage. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Relocation Resource
As just one component of your relocation research this is a great tool. While it is hard to question the underlying research presented in the book you have to look for nuances in the recommendations the authors make to gain a better understanding of a particular area. These carefully worded nuances are a critical part of gaining a true picture of the "Best Place" being rated.
3-0 out of 5 stars It's OK.
There is a lot of information here.We especially liked the 100 `family' places around the country, but isn't that what any suburb is anyway?Still, the selections are interesting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening research
I can't begin to imagine the work that went into putting this book together.I'm on my second time reading it through and I've already learned about the ins and outs of 20 or 30 neighborhoods that weren't even on my radar before.

I couldnt put the book down, there is some fantastic insights into improving your success in online dating. great book

3-0 out of 5 stars For People Uncomfortable with Computers?
Most of what this book says is either common sense or easy to find out by using an online dating service. They sound uncomfortable enough with computers that they seem to expect readers to prefer reading a generic description on paper to reading the online descriptions that the dating services provide.

The "xxxx for dummies" always does a good job on breaking down the "hard-to-grasp" concepts and makes it easy for people to understand the complexities that can be involved. 4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and a great book to own
I absolutely loved this book. I initially picked it up because of the pictures in it (most of the other books I looked at just had sketches) and quickly found that I really enjoyed the format of it and the overall wealth of information.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I Had Seen This Book 6 Months Ago!
What an excellent book.It is all-encompassing, and not only takes you through pregnancy in a non-biased way (giving you a broad perspective with a ob-gyn to a midwife) it gives you a look through and after child birth. The information is accurate, complete, helpful, and easy to digest. It puts all of the other pregnancy books to shame.I bought the old stand-by "What to Expect When You're Expecting" when I first found out I was pregnant and think it will work well for starting a fire in my fire pit now that I've found "I'm Pregnant!".

1-0 out of 5 stars Pro-life readers beware.
I loved this book until I started reading the fine print.Anyone who is pro-life will not appreciate the references to termination. It is also seemingly bragged that few down syndrome babies are now born due to early diagnosis and abortion.I find this to be a sad fact rather than something to rejoice over. The book was fantastic except for those parts which took the joy completely from this book. Many pregnancy books discuss medical issues without having to suggest abortion. It ruined the book for me.I tossed it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrific Story - Terribly Written - Very Disappointing
This book was a HUGE disappointment for me because I have used the Amazon Recommendations wizard for a long time and this book was the #1 recommendation based on my preferences. How could this book be likened to ANYTHING on my list? The similarities come to a dead stop other than being on the topic of 'child abuse'.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Real Pageturner
Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. I am still stunned that this woman is alive today and that someone hasn't shot her dead. Her poor children will never be right. All I can say is that I would like to be in a room with Terry for about 1 hour. How was she even allowed to have children. She should have been spayed long ago.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good read
The reason I gave this book such a low review is because it was so poorly written. I felt like I was reading something intended for a second grader. I was very diappointed by the author and the way the book was written. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Good Insights but rigid .
Smalley has alot of good insights but he is too rigid ,he places all of the responsibility on the husband . For a more balanced view try Haltzmans Secrets of Happily Married men or Michelle Weiner Davis .

1-0 out of 5 stars Very sexist
This book is written by a OLD man. His views express a time when life was good for men and hard for women. If the traditional marriage was such a nifty niche for women, then why aren't they still there? This book will only be satisying to men and the elderly. You will see alot more of these types of books in the future as men desperately try to hang on to the oppressively patriarchal society they created with their might makes right world order .As you can see, it's backfiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Understand Where My Husband Is Coming From...
This is the book that got my husband and I back on the same page in our relationship. We had become just parents, nothing more. Although it has a Christian spin, the author doesn't try to sugar coat the dealings that go on b/t a man and a woman. He gives it to you straight. My husband said he was dead on in the section that tells the wife how the husband is feeling. But what amazed me is how on point he was about the woman's point of view. It was downright scary. Best of all, my husband "got it".Something I couldn't get accross verbally or he stopped listening to me. Whatever. Get this book if you are about to give up on your relationship and just ask you partner to read the chapters on your point of view. You will open the doors of communication. Wonderful insightful work ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Worst Case Scenario Book for Having a Second Child
If you are going to read only one book on introducing a second child to your family, this is the book to read. It offers advice on what to expect, things to think about and behaviors to watch for.
3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing exceptional, Just Ok
I wish the book gave more creative solutions. I felt the book gave advice that I could have given myself. On the other hand, at least I felt reasured that I was already doing everything I could to make sure the transition for my son of having a new sibling wasn't any more bothersome than it has to be. It's a simple read. You will pick up a few good points but I just don't feel I got enough out of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a BLESSING!!!!!
This book is a total blessing! I'm so happy that I ordered this book before the birth of my second child. I feel so well informed of what to expect from my first born when baby #2 comes home. Every mother should have this book before the birth of their second baby. In closing, I'm glad this book continues into the first year of the sibilings lives together! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Pocket Book
At first, I thought this was a silly gift my husband received when I was pregnant with our son. I decided to take a look at it, and its such a beautiful book. It has very simple ideas and advice, but very important life lessons.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fathers and Men need to WAKE UP NOW
I felt compelled to write about this book after reading one of the reviews on it apparently written by a female.
3-0 out of 5 stars Some good thoughts but overoptimistic
The author of this book certainly does not say anything that is untrue, even given the huge disparity of laws in the 50 states. However, on the front cover, among other things, he says you will learn how to:
