5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure for anyone with cancer or less-than-perfect health
My Mother is currently undergoing chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. I was frightened and anxious and unsure how to help my mother recover fully and quickly. And then God sent me an angel in the form of Caroline Sutherland and her wonderful book! Caroline explained clearly and simply what my mother should eat and drink, and what she must avoid.
5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
Nothing I tried ever worked before. I had tried every diet out there. I was tired all the time, and could not seem to lose weight no matter what I did--even working out daily didn't help much. Caroline has given me the key to solving my health issues. I am losing weight easily now and am getting more in tune with the reaction my body has to the food I eat. I can now immediately tell if I have consumed something I should not have. 3-0 out of 5 stars informative book
I was excited to read the book. The first 3 chapters were excellent. Talking about health issues and problems that cause them I can relate to. After that, I encountered areas where I disagree. I won't read the whole book again, just the first chapters. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Differences in Libido
Weiner's non-nonsense approach to marriage and sex was utterly refreshing. For those who are turned off by the title, this book isn't just about sex starvation-- it's about high libido and low libido, and how happiness in marriage takes effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for raising a healthy child
End the fear campaign that vaccines bring about. Learn how to treat the childhood diseases and do it w/o fear and w/o intimidation. Vaccines aren't the best thing since sliced bread and childhood diseases do have a purpose.

There is more and more information coming to light on the topic of health risks and damage associated with vaccines - the mercury/autism issue is only one of many.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start
Mary-Jane Schneider's "Introduction to Public Health" is just what she claims it is - an introduction. The book is a very concisely and clearly-written overview on a range of public health topics such as water quality, epidemiology, and chronic diseases.Schneider divides the book into seven parts that look at the definition of public health, analytical methods of public health, public health'sbiomedical basis, social and behavioral factors, environmental issues, medical care, and the future of public health. The book should be valued not for its depth but its breadth - Schneider does cover a variety of important public health topics but she does not go into great detail.Including a list of resources or suggested reading at the end of each chapter would have been greatly appreciated. However, to Schneider's credit, the book does have cute illustrations and includes numerous charts, graphs, and discussion questions at the end of every chapter. The book is also very readable and isn't as daunting or dry as some other public health textbooks. This book is a great complement to Bernard Turnock's introduction to public health, as Turnock does go into some of the nitty gritty of public health but doesn't cover as many issues as Schneider does.

4-0 out of 5 stars Truly a wonder
Truly a wonder. Not only is it full of useful information, well organized, thorough, and insightful - it's readable!!!For once, I could not put a book (other than a novel!) down! The author kept my interest alive with the excellent use of the language and the ability to keep even sub-sub-sections organized and to the point.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a really great book, but probably only if you are scientific-minded and want some detail on the author's studies of exercise during pregnancy. There are no specific recommendations for exercises - that is not the point of this book. Another book, "Walking Through Pregnancy and Beyond", will provide that (although maybe not for competitive athletes). "Exercising Through Your Pregnancy" has a lot of important information. The author's study showed that while exercising during pregnancy provides multiple benefits to both mother and baby before and after birth, STOPPING exercise during pregnancy can actually cause more problems and heavier babies than if you had not exercised at all during pregnancy. On days that I don't feel like working out, this single piece of information motivates me to do at least 30 minutes. You've got to keep it up! Also, he challenges the standard recommendation that a pregnant woman not exceed a heart rate above 140, as genetic factors, age, and other things can affect a person's normal resting heart rate, making 140 pretty arbitrary. He outlines other ways of ensuring that you don't overexert yourself and your baby. Dr. Clapp also has sections on exercise as it relates to fertility, early pregnancy, new exercisers, lactation, and the postpartum period. There are tables and graphs of his results, in case that turns you off (but they are illustrative, not technical). Check it out at the library first if you're not sure.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ah, I'd rather read something else
I feel as though I was looking for a book to confirm the fact that you can do more exercise during pregnancy. I am having my first baby in February and was very active before but have taken it a notch or two down because of all of the precautions out there. This book started out slow and it was painful to read at first but I do have to say that it made me a little more at ease about exercising but listening to your body is key. I think that is what it all comes down to and that is the rule I go by each day when i go to the gym.

5-0 out of 5 stars the only exercise book that really had answers
I work out 5-6 days a week, 1 to 2 hours a day. I weight train, do cardio of all sorts, and do power yoga. After I got pregnant I looked everywhere for a book on exercising while pregnant that spoke to my situation. All I could find was extremely conservative advice(such as walking 5 days a week for 20 minutes...) and in some places a vague hint that if one had been exercising before the pregnancy it was perhaps o.k. to continue with a similar routine. None of this advice came with any real data to back it up. Frustrating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good
When I got this book I was not expecting nothing more than narrow minded approach to etiquete and "good habits", instead I found a delightful reading full of sarcastic humor and useful tips. I think this book is definitely a surprise and maybe that is why some readers find it odd or disappointing, but I can assure you it is not.
5-0 out of 5 stars Metrosexual Guide review
This book is AWESOME. Clear, concise and well written. Includes EVERYTHING a man should know about food, fashion, travel, style, grooming, health, fitness, art, etiquette, you name it. I use is as a guideline for everything. Easy to read with a good sense of humor.

2-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but...
This book is full of useful advice, but do not mistake it for instruction on how to become a gentleman. Despite what one would think, I have come to appreciate this term "Metrosexual" as it distinguishes those who use manners and the appearance of urbane sophistication for their own self-advancement from true gentlemen.True gentlemen show respect for themselves and others, bringing the light of civilization to a darkening world, and leaving society better for their efforts.A gentleman's manners, urbanity and consideration are a lifestyle, not a mask that is donned for selfish convenience.

This is the best collection of behaviorist techniques in treating sexual offenders against children. If you're looking for humanist techniques, Amazon has many other good offers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical and well written
Salter's book provides the reader with a concisely written guide to diagnosing and working with both Sex Offenders and their victims. She tackles a century worth of documentation on the subject of sex offendersmanaging to simultaneously dispel many of the fallacious argumentsconcerning the disorder while presenting a well informed description ofmost sex offenders. This book is particularly nice in that Salter usesmany real cases from her practice to give the piece more clarity as well asa more human impact that many texts on the subject fail to provide. As ateacher, I found the section on "Identifying Sexually Abused Children"particularly useful.A great read! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I wish this book were out of date and irrelevant!
This definitive history of formula, pharmaceutical companies and infant death is highly readable, despite its depressing topic. While it would be comforting to think that formula fed babies only die at a higher rate than breastfed in places without access to clean water that just ain't so -- never has been, never will be, and the companies which make formula know that. Which is why the code of advertising (which formula -- which is to say, pharmaceutical -- companies continue to violate) adopted in the early years of the boycott applies around the world, including in the U.S.
5-0 out of 5 stars It strengthened the Lactivist in me!
This book should be on every mother-to-be's MUST READ list. It goes into great detail about breastfeeding in other cultures, how the medical establishement derails a mothers efforts before she can even get started, and the overly agressive marketing tactics of the formula manufactures.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for all concerned with breastfeeding and public health!
I just finished this book and it was great!

5-0 out of 5 stars D&S:From A-Z or Top to Bottom
I didn't give this 5 stars because it will sit alongside War and Peace on my bookshelf...not that I think Tolstoy would mind.It does deserve praise, however, for helping out an open-minded person who is just beginning to explore the world of D&S.The purpose of the book seems to be to explain the broad world of dominance and submission in a serious-minded way; This isn't erotica. Interesting interviews with practitioners of this lifestyle are included. If any potential readers out there are like me, they were looking for a book that would show that D&S fantasies are no stranger or "unhealthier" than sex limited to the missionary position.I wanted to catch the broadest view of the spectrum of the D&S lifestyle as possible, and I think that the authors succeeded in delivering that. The book includes information about fetishism, transgenderism, as well as other areas that might be considered on the "fringe" of sexual tastes, but they are nonetheless illuminating for anyone who'd like to expand their knowledge of these practices.

4-0 out of 5 stars Intelligently Written Book on an Interesting Sexually Topic
As a switch, I was looking for a couple of good books on BDSM.I purchased Different Loving and Female Domination.Different Loving is without doubt the superior written book. Not only is this book written in an intelligent, engaging style that conveys the truly multifariate components of this lifestyle, but presents the vibrant people involved in these practices as genuinely real and with respect. In contrast, Female Domination casts people into two sharp worlds of the dominant and submissive. All men are submissives and all women are dominant according to Suttons ridiculously erroneous worldview.People are presented as paper cut outs, stamped out and forced into Sutton's preconceived notions of gender and sex.It is genuinely laughable how Sutton attempts to explain the blairing anomalies of her thinking or conviently ignores what is commond practice and desire among men and women.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to the Lifestyle
This book is a wonderful resource for those who are thinking of exploring or have just begun to explore the realm of BDSM. The authors have provided a frank, intelligent overview into a very broad and often difficult subject. I enjoyed the tone of this book...informative, but not condescending. It's an easy read, and each section stands sufficiently on its own, so if you have a specific need for information you can read only what applies at the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
I wish I'd come across this book years ago.Medical schools should have a mandatory class built around this book.Reading it I constantly found myself amazed at how similar the accounts of other medical marriage were to my own.I'd find my physician husband's behaviors, opinions, attitudes, etc. common to many other physicians in the book and my own frustrations, worries, behaviors mirrored by many of the physician wives in the book as well. The book classifies medical marriages into 8 categories (male physician married to at-home wife, female physician married to non-physician, two married physicians, etc.)I was surprised at how closely our category tagged our relationship's problems, strengths, needs.I do wish they'd gone into more detail on how to handle the various problems, ways to avoid the common pitfalls, etc.I plan on lending it to a friend where both husband and wife are physicians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relief
No doubt ~ it was a relief to read we weren't the only ones.Medical marriages are without question wound together tightly by stress, partly due to the job, and partly due to the type of personality the job attracts (the best docs out there seem to have a degree of OCD, which interestingly often contributes to their success).
5-0 out of 5 stars there is a reason that the AMA commissioned this book--medical marriages can be difficult
Separate sections for the male as the physician, the female as the physician, and when both are physicians are presented.Whatever your circumstance, it is very useful to see your relationship difficulties in terms of the problems that others are undoubtedly experiencing. You can benefit from the authors' useful ideas for best managing typical conflicts, without blaming yourself or your spouse. The authors note that all counseling, reimbursed by US-based health insurance, involves assigning a psychiatric pathology label. This process, alone, is likely to be iatrogenic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
As a woman who breastfed eight children (including her adopted child!) Martha Sears is exactly the sort of person you want writing books about breastfeeding. Her tone is loving and gentle while still offering a wealth of information and troubleshooting tips. Like most women I know, I found breastfeeding to be much more complicated and difficult at first than I'd anticipated. The first couple weeks were rough for me and I give much credit to this book (as well as my lactation consultant) for getting me through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Any New Mom!!!
I used this book as a reference when nursing my own children, now give the book as a gift to my friends and relatives who are expecting a baby.
1-0 out of 5 stars Hurt More Than It Helped
I was given this book as a gift and was eager to exclusively breastfeed my baby. The first few days after we got home from the hospital, however, things were not working right.I fed and fed him, yet he never seemed satisfied.I scoured The Breastfeeding Book for information about low production levels, and basically all it said was that it is rare and not to worry about it--just breastfeed frequestly and your supply will increase.I did just that, yet my supply never increased. My baby was so hungry and I was frantic and felt completely inadequate! This book basically implied that giving your baby any formula is just short of child abuse and breastfeeding is the only option, no matter what.Thank goodness a lactation consultant finally worked with us, determined that, in fact, my supply was too low for my baby, and recommended I supplement with formula. My baby was so happy after that, my supply actually increased after I started supplementing, and we are still doing a combination 4 months later. There is no way we would have stuck with it this long if I had followed the advice of this book and just breastfed.I give this book one star because, although there is some useful information, it makes moms feel like failures if they can't or don't want to breastfeed for a year or more.Being a mom is so much more than how you feed your baby! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a perfect book for both partners to get you though the rough times.Especially good for those who just got diagnosed, or think you or your partner may have ADHD.Very informative, yet presented in a very easy to understand manner.I think everyone would be able to identify with many of the stories in this book, and learn from the explanations.Very eye-opening.
5-0 out of 5 stars ADD/Adults
This book was written for people who are not familiar with ADD and its sometimes negative effects. It was a simple book with some assumptions but overall it was a good book.I found some truth to what the author has to say but I sensed that he is pro meds and I am not.It was a good choice for me to purchase it and recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best ADD/ADHD book I read yet!
I loved this book, I am a young adult female with ADHD and this book helped me understand myself and my actions better. This book highlighted which actions and feelings are normal and which actions or fellings are "ADD things". This book has helped me a lot. I also liked how this book touched on the positieve aspects of having ADD also. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable if you plan to BFAR
I was so glad to find this book while pregnant with my son! It really answered all the questions I had about attempting breastfeeding after my breast reduction surgery. There is much good information about the various reduction techniques and likliehood of successful BFAR (breastfeeding after reduction) with each technique. The book includes personal stories with a variety of BFAR experiences as well as tips for increasing and, if necessarly, supplementing your milk supply. It really focuses on the aspects of breastfeeding that are unique to those who have undergone breast reduction surgery, and, in companion with a good book on breastfeeding basics, is all you need! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Probably works but looks too difficult
This book gives instructions on how to calculate how slow or fast your metabolism really is, by following a 1,000 calorie per day diet for 28 days and writing down any deviation from that, then doing some complicated formulas.I just think that 1,000 calories per day is too low for me, and could slow my metabolism down more than it already is, with the risk of losing muscle mass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful Infomation
I learned middle 2003 that I have hypothyroidism. My Doctor put me on Synthyroid but I just haven't felt like it was doing any good so I decided to investigate the illness myself. That is when I ordered this book and was I pleased with the information you get from this book. I had no idea there was medication that was natural that supplies both T4 & T3 and how your body needs both to be balanced. I now have more hopethat I will be able to control this condition after reading this book. It is written in plain language that a layman can understand. I recommend this book very highly to those who need help with Hypothyroidism.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you have a thyroid problem this book won't help!
I read this book & was very disappointed. It has some basic things that anyone with a thyroid problem already knows. As far as the diagnosis method it is to eat a 1000 calorie diet for 28 days to see if you loose weight normally. And the diet to lose weight is to eat 1000 calories a day.Very unhealthy & unrealistic. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Parents of Celiac Kids!!!
Like most parents, we were pretty shell-shocked by my 5 yr old son's diagnosis.I spent hours on the Internet researching Celiac Disease.Problem was, most of the information was geared towards adults. My initial response was less concerned with what he could eat and more concerned with how am I going to make sure he feels "normal"?What will I pack for lunch at school? How can I send him to school without something happening? How will I deal with the 5 birthday parties he has in the next month?Danna Korn's book answered all of those questions and the other 1000 I forgot to think of.This book is a life saver. My son started Kindergarten 3 days ago and I feel like all is well.I read it cover to cover in one night. As parents of celiac kids, we are not alone.Danna Korn helps you see that.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on the Treatment of CP
What an excellent new resource this author has provided us with! This book is very well organized and thoughtfully researched to provide the most updated information and answers to parents most burning questions as well as give ideas and advice to parents and professionals. Most books focus heavily on the difference between normal motor development (some of which children with CP will not be able to achieve) and the motor and muscle abnormalities of children with CP but are usually not as positive as this one. I especially enjoyed the optimism with which this book was written and the guidelines it gave for reaching realistic goals. It was niceto see a discussion of newer treatments such as SDR and ITB Therapies as well. Destined to become a classic work!
